fix(ai, ai-client): make a cancel stop the provider request, not only the caller - #1979
A cancel (caller AbortController, timeout, middleware ctx.abort(), client stop(), your own options.signal, disconnect()) made the caller reject, but the provider request or the pending work kept running and kept billing. This PR passes the signal that core and the client already have to that work, and races the waits that cannot take a signal. There is no new public API.
This is part 1 of a 5-PR abort-signal series: 3 fix PRs (this one: core @tanstack/ai + @tanstack/ai-client; then provider adapters; then agents, sandboxes, and MCP) and 2 feat PRs for new optional abortSignal / timeout fields.
🎯 Changes
@tanstack/ai
summarize(): the wrapped chatStream now gets request.signal. With stream: true, abortSignal and timeout now work, and a cancel calls middleware onAbort, not onError.
When the caller passes an abortController, chat() middleware ctx.abort() now aborts the adapter request (stream and structured output) and ctx.signal. Without a caller signal, the request gets no signal, as before.
Subagent children follow the tool context signal, so a parent ctx.abort() stops them.
generateVideo({ stream: true }) races getVideoStatus() and getVideo() with the signal. Non-durable toWebSocket stops pumping an aborted turn.
@tanstack/ai-client
ChatClient.stop() does not wait for a client tool that never settles (both waits: during the stream and after finalizeStream()).
Fetch and XHR connection adapters abort on the client's signal and on your own options.signal (before, abortSignal || options.signal dropped yours). An abort of your options.signal now ends the chat like stop(): status ready, no onFinish, no onError.
stream() and rpcStream() end on abort, even if the source ignores the signal. abortableIterable no longer waits for return() of a source stuck in an await.
RealtimeClient.disconnect() during connect() or during a token refresh no longer keeps a late connection, a "connected" status, or a refresh timer. When a second connect() replaces a connection during audio startup, events and a failed close of the replaced connection do not change the live session.
Not in this PR
C10 / C12 are not bugs.toServerSentEventsResponse and generate*({ stream: true }) stop the run on disconnect when you give the same controller to the call and to the response. docs/chat/streaming.md already documents this. An automatic stop without a shared controller is new behavior, so it goes to a feat PR.
Moved to the feat PR (needs new public API): a signal for MCP discovery (MCPToolSource.tools(), C7), an abortSignal field on the client tool context (L1), and signal options for getVideoStatus() / getVideo() (K2). Today the C8 race stops the caller, but the provider poll keeps running until K2 lands.
Not changed: the rejoin wait in ChatClient (joinRun). There is no hang that a user can see, because stop() and detach reset the state.
Docs:docs/advanced/middleware-advanced.md now says what ctx.signal does. This is a correction, so docs/config.json dates did not change. The generated reference page updates with the docs bot. Changesets: one patch for @tanstack/ai, one patch for @tanstack/ai-client.

🚀 Release Impact
This change affects published code, and I have generated a changeset.
This change is docs/CI/dev-only (no release).
Root cause
Issue. A cancel stopped the caller, but not the work. Affected: summarize() on 13 providers, chat() with middleware ctx.abort(), subagents, client tools that ignore their signal, video polling, toWebSocket turns, client connection adapters with options.signal, stream() / rpcStream(), and RealtimeClient. The provider request kept running and was billed.
Cause. Core races the adapter promise (raceWithAbort), so the caller sees a rejection. But the signal did not reach the work:
ChatStreamSummarizeAdapter.buildTextOptions sent no request.signal, and the streaming summarize() path did not compose abortSignal / timeout.
TextEngine gave the adapter request and ctx.signal only the caller signal. ctx.abort() reached only tools.
runChild linked to the signal from creation time, not the tool context signal. Waits for client tools and video status were not raced.
Client adapters used abortSignal || options.signal. stream() / rpcStream() were not wrapped, and abortableIterable awaited return() of a stuck source.
RealtimeClient.connect() and refreshToken() did not check if disconnect() ran during their awaits.
Fix. Pass the combined signal that already exists (toolAbortSignal in core, a combined client and user signal in the client) to each request. Race the waits that cannot take a signal. Add a counter, so connect() and refreshToken() stop after disconnect().
Possible alternatives
An internal "delivery abort" seam. A response disconnect would stop the run without a shared controller (covers C10 / C12). Not taken: it changes documented behavior, so it is a feat.
AbortSignal.any to combine signals. Not taken: it needs Node 20.3+ and newer browsers. Core already uses the same manual combine.
New abortSignal fields on public contracts (MCP tools, client tool context, video polling). Not taken here: new public API goes to the feat PR.

On this branch, run the same commands. All cases pass.
E2E: pnpm --filter @tanstack/ai-e2e test:e2e -- --grep "streaming summarize stops at its timeout". On main the stream runs to RUN_FINISHED. On this branch it ends with RUN_ERROR at the 300 ms timeout.
How this PR makes testing easy
packages/ai/tests/abort-signal-reach.test.ts and packages/ai-client/tests/abort-signal-reach.test.ts: one case per audit row. Each fake request rejects at once without a signal and hangs until its signal aborts.
testing/e2e/tests/summarize-abort.spec.ts with testing/e2e/fixtures/summarize-abort/basic.json (a slow aimock fixture). The E2E route /api/summarize now takes an optional timeout. aimock cannot show a closed upstream request, so the ctx.abort() → provider case has unit coverage only.
packages/ai-client/tests/connection-adapters-abort.test.ts: the old case checked that options.signal is dropped. It now checks that both signals abort the request.
Risk / rollback
Behavior change: with a caller abortController, ctx.abort() now aborts the in-flight provider request, and ctx.signal fires on ctx.abort(). Middleware that kept using a request after ctx.abort() now sees an abort.
Behavior change: a user options.signal on a connection adapter now aborts the request.
Rollback: revert this PR. There are no data or config changes.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Cancellation now reaches supported provider requests, client streams, realtime connections, video generation, and summarization, helping these operations stop promptly.
Caller-provided and middleware-triggered cancellation is respected across chat and other supported operations. Cancelled runs are reported as aborted rather than completed.
Stopping a chat no longer waits for unfinished tool work. Stale connection attempts and token refreshes no longer affect the active session.
Documentation
Clarified when chat middleware cancellation signals are triggered.
CI fixes (7ec7e22b9)
CI found two regressions in the first version. I reproduced both locally and fixed them:
The provider request always got a signal. The middleware controller always exists, so every chat() sent a signal, even with no caller signal. Some SDKs drop their own timeout when a request has a signal. The OpenRouter SDK, for example, then ignores timeoutMs. Two ai-gemini tests caught this. Now the linked signal is used only when the caller passes a signal. A new test checks that the request and ctx.signal stay unset without one. The Gemini Gemini chat adapter does not forward the request abort signal to the Google SDK #1374 test now checks that aborting the caller aborts the SDK signal, not that it is the same object.
Row C6 is dropped. Racing a server tool against the abort let the turn end before its tool did. The ai-harness durable-step fence relies on that wait: in ownership.test.ts, a host that lost its log ran a payment step a second time. A tool that ignores its signal can still delay an aborted run. That is safer than a duplicate side effect.
Checked locally: the full ai-gemini suite, the full ai-harness suite (only the known Windows timeout in coding-snapshots.test.ts fails, as on main), the 27 ai test files that use signals, and ai typecheck.

stream: an abort that comes as a RUN_ERROR chunk reports onAbort
The summarize E2E spec now fails if the error comes in under 250 ms, which an error that is not the timeout does.
Not changed: a toWebSocket turn whose stream ignores ctx.signal still stops at its next chunk. There is no E2E spec for client cancellation, because aimock cannot show a closed upstream request.
A cancel rejected the caller, but the provider request kept running.
- summarize(): pass the abort signal to the wrapped chatStream request.
- summarize({ stream: true }): compose abortSignal and timeout like the
non-stream path and pass the signal to summarizeStream.
- chat(): middleware ctx.abort() now aborts the adapter request (stream and
structured output) and ctx.signal.
- Subagent children follow the tool context signal.
- A server tool that ignores its signal no longer blocks an aborted run.
- generateVideo(): race getVideoStatus() and getVideo() with the signal.
- toWebSocket(): stop pumping an aborted turn.
Adds unit repros, an E2E spec for streaming summarize timeout, and a
changeset.
- ChatClient.stop(): do not wait for a client tool that never settles.
- Fetch and XHR connection adapters: abort on the client's signal and on
the user's own options.signal.
- stream() and rpcStream(): end on abort even if the source ignores it.
- RealtimeClient: disconnect() during connect() no longer keeps a late
connection or a token refresh timer.
Adds unit repros and a changeset.
- ChatClient.stop(): do not wait for a client tool that finalizeStream()
started (a run that ends with finishReason tool_calls).
- RealtimeClient: disconnect() during a token refresh no longer re-arms
the refresh timer.
A provider can throw a plain Error after the abort. Only the aborted
signal shows it was a cancel, so onAbort needs the signal, not only the
error name.
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.

The cancellation changes retain bounded concerns: runtimes without AbortSignal.any accumulate request listeners, and an adapter AbortError can be treated as a user stop. These warrant owner awareness and follow-up but do not establish broad merge-blocking failure.

Remove combined-signal listeners when the request ends.
If an adapter reuses options.signal, each call to eitherSignal adds a listener that remains after a successful request. The long-lived signal then retains a listener and controller for every completed run. Remove both listeners when either signal aborts and when the request finishes. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Update eitherSignal to remove both abort listeners when either input signal

Fixed in 5702a2a: eitherSignal uses AbortSignal.any when the runtime has it. It links weakly, so a reused options.signal keeps no listener from a finished request. Older runtimes keep the manual join. New test: "leaves no listener on a reused options.signal after each request".
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
@AlemTuzlak Thanks. The AbortSignal.any path addresses retention on runtimes that provide it.
The manual fallback still retains listeners on a reused options.signal after requests finish. { once: true } removes a listener only when that signal aborts.
This finding remains open for the fallback path. To complete the fix, remove both listeners when either signal aborts and when the request ends. The regression test should also cover a runtime without AbortSignal.any.

Race the pending iterator read against abort.

Not changing this here. The PR notes this limit: a turn whose stream ignores ctx.signal stops at its next chunk. Racing each read and leaving a blocked return() behind is a larger change than this fix.

@AlemTuzlak Understood. This check stops sending at the next chunk; it does not interrupt a pending read. I accept that scope limit and won’t press for the larger change in this PR.
Would you like me to open a follow-up issue for blocked iterator reads and cleanup?
…p the tool-wait race
CI found two regressions in this PR:
- The provider request always got a signal, even with no caller signal.
Some SDKs drop their own timeout when a request has a signal (the
OpenRouter SDK ignores timeoutMs then). The linked signal (caller signal
plus ctx.abort()) is now used only when the caller gives a signal.
- Racing a server tool against the abort let the turn end before its tool.
The harness durable-step fence relies on that wait: a host that lost its
log then ran a side effect a second time (ownership.test.ts). The race
is dropped.
- connection adapters: AbortSignal.any joins the client and user signals
when the runtime has it, so a reused options.signal keeps no listener
from a finished request.
- RealtimeClient: a connect() that a later connect() replaced during audio
startup closes its own connection.
- generateVideo: no download starts when the caller aborts on the
completed status.
- streamed summarize: an abort that the adapter ends with a RUN_ERROR
chunk reports onAbort, not onFinish.
- e2e: the summarize timeout spec fails on an error that comes at once.
Each package is measured twice in this job — on this PR and on its merge-base with main — and compared. A metric fails only when it is at or above 60% on the merge-base and under 60% on this PR. Other drops are listed but do not fail. Packages your PR doesn't affect are not measured and not listed.
…d realtime connection
- normalizeConnectionAdapter: send() reads the request signal of the
built-in adapters. An abort of options.signal no longer pushes a
synthetic RUN_FINISHED or RUN_ERROR. ChatClient ends it like stop().
- RealtimeClient: events from a connection that a later connect()
replaced have no effect, and a failed close of that connection does
not set the error state.
When disconnect() runs while adapter.connect() is pending, connect()
closes the late connection. If that close fails, the client now stays
idle and does not call onError.
Forward request.signal into the Mistral and Bedrock provider calls.
chat() passes the linked signal as request. Mistral chatStream never sends it to fetch, and Bedrock sendStream calls client.send(command) without it. A cancel from the caller or ctx.abort() then leaves the provider request running. The engine checks cancellation only after the next chunk arrives.

Bedrock `sendStream` call to `client.send`, using each provider’s supported

Stopping the video download wait does not stop the provider request.
Stopping the video download wait does not stop the provider request.
VideoAdapter.getVideo and getVideoStatus take only a job ID. When the caller aborts, raceWithAbort ends the wait, but the provider call keeps running. OpenAI's SDK default timeout is 10 minutes, with up to two retries, so the request can outlive the cancellation for that long. Gemini's client also has no client-side timeout by default. The body-cancel handler covers only a late download result, not the in-flight request.

The empty catch drops the only signal that a stale provider connection may still hold its audio context, socket, or microphone. The client keeps no reference to that connection, so it cannot retry the close. Report the failure through onError or a logger, without changing live session state.

A rejected connect() attempt that was already superseded still runs the catch block. That block sets status: 'error' and calls onError, even after disconnect() or a newer connect(). Return early from the catch when generation !== this.connectGeneration.

Stop a pending disconnect() from clearing a connection that a newer connect() installed.
If connect() runs while disconnect() awaits the old connection's close, the finishing disconnect() sets this.connection = null and status to idle. The newer connection then stays open with no owner. Clear this.connection before the await. After the await, skip the token and state reset when a newer connect() has started.

A client tool can finish after disconnect() or a later connect(). The completion then calls this.connection?.sendToolResult(...), which targets the current session, with the old toolCallId. Compare the captured connection before sending.

Add a test that a non-aborted video body stays readable and is not cancelled.
The late-body test in packages/ai/tests/abort-signal-reach.test.ts asserts only that cancel is called after the abort. Calling body.cancel() on every successful getVideo result would also pass it. Add a case where getVideo resolves before any abort. Assert that cancel is not called and that the body can still be read.

Add a test alongside the late-body case in the abort-signal reach tests where
getVideo resolves before any abort; assert that cancel is not called and that
the returned body remains readable, while leaving the existing post-abort case
intact.
A connect() that a later connect() replaced left its token refresh timer
armed, so it fetched tokens after disconnect(). Also tighten two abort

Forward request.signal into Mistral and Bedrock (chat/index.ts:1302-1303): this is in fix(adapters): stop the provider request when the caller aborts #1975, which forwards the signal in the provider adapters, Mistral and Bedrock included. This PR is the core half and makes sure the adapters get the signal.
Clear the previous attempt's refresh timer when connect() starts: fixed in a6aca12e1. scheduleTokenRefresh() now clears any armed timer first. The new test leaves no refresh timer of a connect() that a later connect() replaced failed before the fix and passes now.
Resolve the conflicts with #1979, #1975 and #1976.
- realtime-client: keep the connectAbort design. An overtaken or
cancelled connect() rejects with AbortError. Keep the #1979 fixes: a
late connection is closed, a failed close does not set an error, and
a token refresh after disconnect() does not arm a new timer.
- abort-signal-reach tests: an overtaken connect() now rejects with
AbortError. The other checks did not change.
- generateVideo: keep raceWithAbort and the late body cancel. Send the
abort signal to getVideoStatus and getVideo.
- byteplus video: use the third request() argument for every call. The
caller signal and the config timeout go together on each request.
- openai video: create and retrieve both accept a signal.

A cancel (caller

Root cause
Issue. A cancel stopped the caller, but not the work. Affected:
summarize()on 13 providers,chat()with middlewarectx.abort(), subagents, client tools that ignore their signal, video polling,toWebSocketturns, client connection adapters withoptions.signal,stream()/rpcStream(), andRealtimeClient. The provider request kept running and was billed.Cause. Core races the adapter promise (
raceWithAbort), so the caller sees a rejection. But the signal did not reach the work:ChatStreamSummarizeAdapter.buildTextOptionssent norequest.signal, and the streamingsummarize()path did not composeabortSignal/timeout.TextEnginegave the adapter request andctx.signalonly the caller signal.ctx.abort()reached only tools.runChildlinked to the signal from creation time, not the tool context signal. Waits for client tools and video status were not raced.abortSignal || options.signal.stream()/rpcStream()were not wrapped, andabortableIterableawaitedreturn()of a stuck source.RealtimeClient.connect()andrefreshToken()did not check ifdisconnect()ran during their awaits.Fix. Pass the combined signal that already exists (
toolAbortSignalin core, a combined client and user signal in the client) to each request. Race the waits that cannot take a signal. Add a counter, soconnect()andrefreshToken()stop afterdisconnect().Possible alternatives
AbortSignal.anyto combine signals. Not taken: it needs Node 20.3+ and newer browsers. Core already uses the same manual combine.abortSignalfields on public contracts (MCP tools, client tool context, video polling). Not taken here: new public API goes to the feat PR.Testing

Bug Fixes
Documentation
CI fixes (
7ec7e22b9)CI found two regressions in the first version. I reproduced both locally and fixed them:
chat()sent a signal, even with no caller signal. Some SDKs drop their own timeout when a request has a signal. The OpenRouter SDK, for example, then ignorestimeoutMs. Twoai-geminitests caught this. Now the linked signal is used only when the caller passes a signal. A new test checks that the request andctx.signalstay unset without one. The Gemini Gemini chat adapter does not forward the request abort signal to the Google SDK #1374 test now checks that aborting the caller aborts the SDK signal, not that it is the same object.ai-harnessdurable-step fence relies on that wait: inownership.test.ts, a host that lost its log ran a payment step a second time. A tool that ignores its signal can still delay an aborted run. That is safer than a duplicate side effect.Checked locally: the full
ai-geminisuite, the fullai-harnesssuite (only the known Windows timeout incoding-snapshots.test.tsfails, as onmain), the 27aitest files that use signals, andaitypecheck.Review fixes (
