Code Mode runs, computer-use actions, MCP client calls, harness client requests, sandbox git and snapshot calls, and memory recall can now be cancelled. Each one takes an optional signal, and the drivers, providers, and adapters pass it on where their runtime can stop the work. All new fields are optional. Old calls compile and behave the same.

This is part 5 of a 5-PR abort-signal series. Parts 1 to 3 fix places where a signal exists but is dropped. Parts 4 and 5 add the signal where the public contract had no place for it.

🎯 Changes

Why: before this PR, a cancel did not reach these calls. A stopped chat run still waited for a sandbox, an isolate, an MCP request, or a memory backend. The contracts had no field to carry the signal.

What is new:

  1. Code Mode. IsolateContext.execute(code, { signal }). execute_typescript passes the tool call signal.
    • Node, Cloudflare, and E2B stop the run at once.
    • QuickJS stops like a timeout. QuickJS on Bun stops between jobs.
    • Daytona stops waiting and starts no more tool rounds.
  2. Computer use.
    • ComputerDriverFactory.create({ threadId, signal }).
    • Driver actions take an optional { signal }, and the tools stop their waits on abort. Releases (keyUp, mouseUp) get no signal.
    • Playwright and the sandbox driver forward it.
  3. MCP.
    • createMCPClient({ signal }) covers the connect handshake.
    • tools, resources, readResource, resourceTemplates, prompts, and getPrompt take { signal }. The client sends it to the MCP SDK.
    • The lazy tool list in callTool uses the call signal.
    • createMcpAppCallHandler returns (req, { signal }), and createMcpAppBridge().callTool(input, { signal }).
  4. Harness client and sandbox.
    • Each request method of createHarnessClient takes an optional last { signal }.
    • Sandbox: git.clone({ signal }), git.push(dir, { signal }), git.pull(dir, { signal }), snapshot(label, { signal }), fork({ signal }), ports.connect(port, { signal }).
    • The exec-backed git forwards the signal. E2B, Docker, Sprites, and boxd forward it for snapshot, fork, or ports.
    • The sandbox tool bridge stops a tool when its MCP request closes.
  5. Memory.
    • MemoryAdapter.recall(scope, query, { signal }) and Embedder.embed(text, { signal }). memoryMiddleware passes the chat run signal.
    • inMemory, redis, mem0, and Hindsight forward it, and the Hindsight tools pass the tool call signal. Honcho stops waiting.

Calls that still cannot be stopped (SDK limits):

  • Daytona cannot cancel a codeRun that already started.
  • QuickJS on Bun stops only between jobs, not inside one long job.
  • The Honcho SDK takes no signal. The recall stops waiting, but the request can finish.
  • Sandbox providers other than E2B, Docker, Sprites, and boxd ignore the signal for snapshot, fork, and ports. Daytona native git takes no signal, so an abort does not stop a git command.
  • agents.<name>.start on the harness client has no signal.

Docs pages changed: code-mode/code-mode-isolates, computer-use/custom-driver, tools/mcp-manual, mcp/apps, harness/connect, harness/coding-tools-backends, memory/adapters, sandbox/providers. Each changed page has a new updatedAt in docs/config.json.

✅ Checklist

  • I have followed the steps in the Contributing guide.
  • I have tested code changes locally with pnpm run test:pr, or these tests do not apply to this pull request. (Not run locally. Light checks only, see Testing. CI runs test:pr.)
  • I fully understand the code in this pull request, including any code generated with AI assistance.
  • Docs: I updated docs/ for this change, or this change is not user-facing.
  • Changeset: I added a changeset (pnpm changeset), or this PR does not change a published package.

🚀 Release Impact

  • This change affects published code, and I have generated a changeset.
  • This change is docs/CI/dev-only (no release).

Testing

Commands run locally:

  • Unit tests: only the new and changed test files, plus the tests of each changed source file, with --maxWorkers=2. All passed.
  • Typecheck: Nx does not run in the local worktree, so each changed package was checked with a temporary tsconfig that maps @tanstack/* to the package sources. No errors in a changed file.
  • pnpm test:oxlint in each changed package, oxfmt on the changed files, and pnpm test:docs: clean.

Left to CI: the E2E suite, full unit suites, builds, the real package typechecks, knip, sherif, and coverage.

Manual test:

  1. Run pnpm --dir packages/ai-mcp exec vitest run tests/client-signal.test.ts --maxWorkers=2.
  2. Run pnpm --dir packages/ai-isolate-e2b exec vitest run tests/isolate-driver.test.ts --maxWorkers=2. The new cases start while (true) {}, abort it, and expect an AbortError and a process kill.
  3. Run pnpm --dir packages/ai-harness exec vitest run tests/client-signal.test.ts --maxWorkers=2.

How this PR makes testing easy: new signal tests in each changed package, for example ai-mcp/tests/client-signal.test.ts, ai-harness/tests/client-signal.test.ts, ai-memory/tests/recall-signal.test.ts, and ai-code-mode/tests/execute-signal.test.ts.

Risk / rollback

Low. Every field is optional. Without a signal, the calls send the same arguments as before.

  • An aborted Node isolate run disposes that isolate. Code Mode makes a new context for each run, so no later run uses it.
  • To undo, revert this PR.

Public API change

Before

const resources = await mcp.resources()
const snapshot = await client.snapshot()
await sandbox.git.clone({ url })
const result = await memory.recall(scope, query)

After

const resources = await mcp.resources({ signal })
const snapshot = await client.snapshot({ signal })
await sandbox.git.clone({ url, signal })
const result = await memory.recall(scope, query, { signal })

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added optional cancellation signals for AI tool calls, MCP requests, memory recall, code execution, computer actions, sandbox operations, and harness requests.
    • Where supported, cancellation stops pending work; computer actions also release held keys and buttons. Some provider operations may continue in the background if the underlying service cannot be cancelled.
  • Documentation
    • Updated guides with cancellation options and provider-specific behavior.

Review fixes (f5d0694a4)

  • untilAborted (boxd and Playwright) handles the work promise before it checks an aborted signal, so a late rejection is never unhandled. This reorder has no direct test: the unhandled rejection did not show in this test setup.
  • boxd snapshot() and fork() check the signal first. An aborted call starts no capture and makes no fork. Two new tests fail without the fix.
  • QuickJS-Bun gives logs: [] for an abort before the run, not the logs of the run before it. The new test runs only on Bun, so CI runs it.

Review fixes (a247ffd06, 67cde485b)

  • QuickJS disposes the context on an AbortError only when the run's signal is aborted. Guest code that throws its own AbortError keeps the context reusable. The new test fails without the fix.
  • Cloudflare returns an AbortError result when the signal aborts the Worker fetch, not a NetworkError. The changed test fails without the fix.
  • The SandboxGit comment and harness/coding-tools-backends say that Daytona native git does not stop on abort.
  • The tool bridge comment says that the MCP request signal also aborts when the transport closes.

Checks run: the QuickJS and Cloudflare isolate-driver test files (--maxWorkers=2), oxlint and tsc in the four changed packages, and oxfmt on the changed files. tsc shows errors only from dependency builds that are not complete in the local worktree, none in a changed file. CI runs the rest.

Merge with main (7e7092641)

Checks run: the ai-computer-use actions and create-computer-use tests, the Code Mode tool and execute-signal tests, and the MCP client and client-signal tests (--maxWorkers=2). tsc in ai-computer-use, ai-code-mode, and ai-mcp is clean. oxlint and oxfmt on the changed files are clean. CI runs the rest.

…uter-use): optional abort signals for agents, sandboxes, MCP

Add optional cancel signals where these contracts had none. Every new
field is optional, so old calls compile and behave the same.

- Code Mode: IsolateContext.execute(code, { signal }). execute_typescript
  passes the tool signal. The node, cloudflare, and e2b drivers stop the run.
- Computer use: ComputerDriverFactory.create({ threadId, signal }), passed
  to the sandbox provider by ai-computer-sandbox.
- MCP client: signal on connect, tools, resources, readResource,
  resourceTemplates, prompts, getPrompt, and the lazy list in callTool.
  createMcpAppCallHandler(req, { signal }) and
  createMcpAppBridge().callTool(input, { signal }).
- Harness client: an optional last { signal } on each request method.
- Sandbox: signal on git clone/push/pull, snapshot, fork, env.set, and
  ports.connect. The exec-backed git forwards it.
- Memory: recall(scope, query, { signal }) and Embedder.embed(text,
  { signal }); memoryMiddleware passes the chat run signal.
Adds an optional signal to HindsightClientLike and passes the tool call's
abort signal to retain, recall and reflect. Moved here from the fix PR,
because the type change is new public API.
ToolBridgeCore.callTool takes an optional { signal } for one call. The
host MCP bridge passes the request signal, so the tool stops when the
agent closes the tools/call request.
… stop execute() on abort

QuickJS stops like a timeout. QuickJS on Bun stops between jobs and keeps
the context. Daytona stops waiting and starts no more tool rounds; its SDK
cannot cancel a started codeRun.
…ptional abort signal on driver actions

ComputerDriver actions take an optional { signal }. The computer tools
pass the tool call signal to each action and stop the waits on abort.
Releases (keyUp, mouseUp) get no signal.
…o adapters

Hindsight passes the signal to client.recall. Honcho stops waiting on
abort, because its SDK takes no signal.
…x-boxd): forward snapshot, fork, and ports signals

E2B and Docker pass the signal to their SDK. Sprites passes it to the
checkpoint request. boxd stops its own waits and deletes an aborted fork.

Walkthrough

This change adds optional abort-signal support across agent requests, computer actions, isolate execution, memory recall, and sandbox operations. Signals are forwarded where supported. Some operations stop waiting or clean up local resources when the underlying SDK cannot be cancelled.

Changes: Abort-signal propagation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Agent requests and tool calls
packages/ai-harness/src/client.ts, packages/ai-mcp/src/*, packages/ai-client/src/mcp-app-bridge.ts, packages/ai-code-mode/src/*, packages/ai-sandbox/src/tool-bridge.ts, related tests and docs, .changeset/*
Harness requests, MCP operations, MCP App Bridge calls, Code Mode execution, and bridged tool calls accept or forward abort signals. Tests, documentation, and changesets cover these paths.
Computer action and setup signals
packages/ai-computer-use/src/*, packages/ai-computer-playwright/src/driver.ts, packages/ai-computer-sandbox/src/driver.ts, related tests and docs, .changeset/*
Computer actions, waits, and driver setup pass signals to supported operations. keyUp and mouseUp remain without signals so they can release held inputs.
Isolate execution signals
packages/ai-code-mode/src/*, packages/ai-isolate-*/src/*, related tests and docs, .changeset/*
Isolate drivers accept execution signals and return abort outcomes or stop execution with runtime-specific cleanup. Daytona does not cancel an already-started codeRun.
Memory recall and adapter signals
packages/ai-memory/src/*, related tests and docs, .changeset/*
Memory middleware and adapters forward signals during recall and query embedding. Hindsight tools pass signals to client operations. Honcho stops waiting, but its request continues.
Sandbox contracts and provider operations
packages/ai-sandbox/src/*, packages/ai-sandbox-*/src/*, related tests and docs, .changeset/*
Sandbox Git, snapshot, fork, port, and tool calls accept or forward signals. Boxd stops waiting and deletes a fork that completes after abort.

Explanation

The title clearly identifies the main change: adding optional abort signals across the listed agent, sandbox, memory, Code Mode, computer-use, and MCP APIs. It is specific and related to the changeset.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description is thorough and largely complete. It has a clear Changes section that explains why the PR exists and lists the new optional signal parameters by area. It covers known limits, a Public API change example, risk and rollback, and testing commands. The checklist is filled in. Two items are not satisfied: the author did not run pnpm run test:pr locally (the checklist item is left unchecked, with a stated reason), and the 'Release Impact' section marks that the change affects published code with a changeset. The template's 'Changes' section also asks for a note on skipped docs or changesets, which is not needed here because docs and changesets were added. Overall, the description meets the template's required information, so it passes.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 74.19% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 31 functions across 50 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

… handle abort edges found in review

- untilAborted handles the work promise before it checks an aborted
  signal, so a late rejection is never unhandled.
- boxd snapshot() and fork() check the signal first, so an aborted call
  starts no capture and makes no fork.
- quickjs-bun gives empty logs for an abort before the run, not the logs
  of the run before it.

Make snapshot SDK waits abortable.

If the signal aborts while snapshots.get is pending, snapshot() keeps waiting. It can also return a snapshot successfully after the signal aborts if the response is ready. snapshots.create has the same waiting gap. Wrap both waits with untilAborted; the capture can continue in boxd. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Update the snapshot flow around `snapshots.get` and `snapshots.create` to wrap
both pending SDK waits with `untilAborted`, so aborting the signal rejects the

machines.fork takes no signal. Race it with the signal, and delete the

snapshots.create and snapshots.get take no signal. Race them with it, so
an aborted snapshot() rejects at once. The capture goes on in boxd.

Follow-up from the CodeRabbit review: fixed in 335bb86. snapshot() now races snapshots.create and snapshots.get with the signal, so an aborted call rejects at once. The capture goes on in boxd. New test: "snapshot() stops waiting while a snapshot request hangs".

Outside diff Stop waiting when snapshots.create is pending.

Stop waiting when snapshots.create is pending.

If the signal aborts during this.client.snapshots.create(this.id, name), snapshot() continues waiting until the SDK call settles. Use the existing untilAborted helper at this await. The boxd capture can continue in the background.

Suggested fix
-    await this.client.snapshots.create(this.id, name)
+    await untilAborted(this.client.snapshots.create(this.id, name), signal)

Update the `snapshot()` flow to use the existing `untilAborted` helper when
awaiting `this.client.snapshots.create`, passing the current `signal` so
aborting stops the caller’s wait while allowing the SDK capture to continue in

Outside diff Wait for the snapshot readiness poll with untilAborted.

589-590: 🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Wait for the snapshot readiness poll with untilAborted.

The snapshots.get call at line 590 is awaited without the abort wrapper. The documented contract says boxd stops waiting when the signal aborts. This await does not stop. If the signal aborts while the request is pending, snapshot() cannot reject until the request settles. If that response reports ready, the method returns a snapshot reference after the abort.

The fork method already handles SDK calls that take no signal with untilAborted. Apply the same wrapper here.

Suggested fix
-      const snap = await this.client.snapshots.get(name, this.orgParams())
+ const snap = await untilAborted(
+        this.client.snapshots.get(name, this.orgParams()),
+        signal,
+      )

Wrap the `this.client.snapshots.get` await in `snapshot()` with `untilAborted`,

Nitpick Add a test for a readiness rejection that arrives after an abort.

484-495: 🩺 Stability & Availability | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Add a test for a readiness rejection that arrives after an abort.

No changed test makes waitUntilReady reject after the signal is already aborted. The current cancellation test leaves readiness pending. If untilAborted attached its handler after the signal.aborted check, the late rejection would be unhandled. Node terminates on unhandled rejections by default, and Vitest reports them as errors. The suite would still pass.

The test below aborts synchronously inside the waitUntilReady mock. fork then passes an already-aborted signal to untilAborted for readiness. The readiness promise rejects later, after fork has settled.

Suggested fix
+  it('fork() handles a readiness rejection that arrives after an abort', async () => {
+    const { handle, raw } = makeHandle()
+ const controller = new AbortController()
+ let rejectReady!: (error: Error) => void
+    raw.machines.waitUntilReady.mockImplementationOnce(
+      () =>
+        new Promise<never>((_, reject) => {
+          rejectReady = reject
+          controller.abort(new Error('stopped'))
+        }),
+    )
+
+    await expect(
+      handle.fork({ signal: controller.signal }),
+    ).rejects.toThrow('stopped')
+    expect(raw.machines.delete).toHaveBeenCalledWith('vm-fork')
+
+    rejectReady(new Error('late readiness failure'))
+    await new Promise((resolve) => setTimeout(resolve, 0))
+  })

This test relies on the default fork fixture returning vm-fork, as the existing abort test does. It goes in the BoxdHandle snapshot and fork signal block.

Add a test in the `BoxdHandle snapshot and fork signal` block that aborts
synchronously inside the `waitUntilReady` mock, then rejects the readiness
promise after `handle.fork` has rejected and cleanup has deleted `vm-fork`.
Verify the late rejection is handled without producing an unhandled rejection,
covering the already-aborted signal path in `untilAborted`.

On the follow-up review items:

  • snapshots.create and snapshots.get waits: already fixed in 335bb86. Both are wrapped in untilAborted. Test: "snapshot() stops waiting while a snapshot request hangs".
  • A test for a readiness rejection after an abort: I tried that test, and it does not fail on the old code in this suite. Neither Vitest nor a process.on('unhandledRejection') listener reported the late rejection. So it would not guard the reorder, and I did not add it. The fix itself is in f5d0694: untilAborted attaches its handlers to work before it checks signal.aborted, so the rejection always has a handler.

After a readiness error, fork() waits for the delete. A later abort now
stops that wait, and the readiness error is still thrown.

- ai-isolate-quickjs: dispose the context on an AbortError only when the
  run's signal is aborted. Guest code that throws its own AbortError keeps
  the context reusable, as on main.
- ai-isolate-cloudflare: when the signal aborts the Worker fetch, return an
  AbortError result, not a NetworkError.
- ai-isolate-quickjs-bun: move abortedBeforeRun so that each JSDoc is on
  its own method.
Daytona's native git API takes no signal, so an abort does not stop its
git command. The exec-backed git stops it. Also say that the MCP bridge
signal aborts when the transport closes, not only on an MCP cancel.
Combine the abort changes of #1976 with the optional signals of this PR.

- ai-computer-use: use the new withKeys(driver, signal, keys, action)
  order. withSignal now gives no signal and no abort check to a move
  while a mouse button is down, so a drag that started always ends.
- ai-computer-use: keep runInThread and the withSignal machine in the
  computer and navigate tools.
- ai-code-mode: use one run signal. When the run aborts and the driver
  reports DisposedError, report AbortError.
- Keep the tests of both sides. Add a test for a drag through withSignal.
