fix(agents, sandboxes, ai-mcp): stop the work under a run when the run aborts - #1976
A stopped run did not stop the work under it. CLI agent tool bridges, the agent process, harness turns, late Daytona and Vercel sandboxes, Code Mode programs, computer-use actions, and MCP task tools kept running or kept waiting after the caller aborted. This PR passes the signal that each path already has to the step that dropped it, and cleans up where the SDK cannot cancel.
This is part 3 of a 5-PR abort-signal series. It changes no public API. New optional signal fields go to the feat PR (part 4).
🎯 Changes
What now stops when the run aborts:
CLI agents (ai-claude-code, ai-codex, ai-grok-build): the host tool bridge gets request.signal. chat() sets no abortController, so before this the bridged tools never got a signal.
Sandbox runner (ai-sandbox): spawnNdjson kills the agent process when the consumer stops reading early. The save_sandbox_snapshot tool gives its call signal to snapshots.save.
Harness and ACP (ai-harness, ai-acp): list_files and grep commands get the call signal. harnessText cancels the inner or remote turn when the caller stops reading early. The ACP agent sends $/cancel_request for an open question form when the operation ends.
Sandboxes, Code Mode, computer use (ai-sandbox-daytona, ai-sandbox-vercel, ai-code-mode, ai-computer-use): Daytona and Vercel delete or stop a sandbox that the SDK makes after the abort. Code Mode ends the program and disposes the isolate. Computer use skips a queued action and ends a wait or hold_key.
MCP (ai-mcp): the server answers tasks/cancel for execution: 'task' tools (spec 2025) and advertises tasks.cancel. The task becomes cancelled, its ctx.abortSignal aborts, and a late result does not replace the cancel. A spec 2025 elicitation that the server cancels now stops the harness question.
Docs: docs/mcp/server-tasks.md (new section "Stop a cancelled task"), docs/code-mode/code-mode.md, docs/harness/connect.md. Each changed package has a patch changeset.
Not in this PR
Dropped, because the bug was not proven or the behavior is on purpose:
CLI runner signal forwarding (A5): every killable sandbox kills the whole process group, so the child dies too.
Formatter and snapshot exec (H2, H3): a stop mid-run can leave a half-written file or a git index.lock. Both already stop at a short timeout (20 s, 60 s).
Host fs calls (H6), permission wait (S13): Node fs.rm, stat, realpath, and readdir take no signal. The only permission resolver is synchronous.
Harness as an MCP server (M1): on purpose. It has its own cancel and status tools on a shared, durable thread.
stdio close (M7): the SDK follows the MCP shutdown order (close stdin, SIGTERM, SIGKILL). A process-tree leak was not proven.
SDK limits (no API to stop the remote work):
Daytona exec and spawn: SDK 0.192 has no API to kill a command. What deleteSession does to a running command is not measured.
Cloudflare exec: a Workers RPC cannot carry an AbortSignal, and exec has no process id. The handle reports killableProcesses: false.
Upstash Box exec:@upstash/box 0.7.1 cannot stop a running exec.command. Run.cancel() posts a local run id that the server does not know.
Vercel group kill and resume (S7, S6 resume): these need a measured run on a real VM.
Moved to the feat PR (new public API): a bridge per-request signal (S12), an isolate execute signal (D3 to D6), a ComputerDriver signal (D8), an app call-handler signal (M6), a snapshot fork and readArtifact signal, and the Hindsight memory tools signal (X1).

🚀 Release Impact
This change affects published code, and I have generated a changeset.
This change is docs/CI/dev-only (no release).
Root cause
Issue. A caller aborts a chat() run, or stops reading its stream. The work under that run keeps going: bridged agent tools, the agent process, harness turns, late sandboxes, Code Mode isolates and approval waits, computer-use waits and queued actions, and MCP task tools. This costs compute and money, or the run hangs.
Cause. Each path had the signal, but one link dropped it:
The CLI agent provisioners read only options.abortController, which chat() never sets.
withCallSignal in the harness workspace wrapped every file call but not exec.
spawnNdjson and harnessText had no cleanup for an early stop of their generators.
Daytona and Vercel create ignored a sandbox that came after the abort. Code Mode programEnd and the computer-use sleeps were never linked to the call signal.
The MCP server had no tasks/cancel handler. The ACP question request had no cancellation signal.
Fix. Pass the signal that already exists to the step that dropped it. Where the SDK cannot cancel, clean up after the call returns: kill the process, cancel the turn, delete or stop the sandbox, or dispose the isolate.
Possible alternatives
Race each provider create against the signal, as ai-sandbox-e2b does. It frees the caller sooner. Not taken: more code, and the check after create already stops the leak.
Give the signal to Vercel Sandbox.create. Not taken: it cancels only the HTTP request, so a sandbox that the server made has no owner.
Add a signal to the isolate and ComputerDriver contracts. It also stops a QuickJS CPU loop. Not taken here: that is a public API change, so it is in the feat PR.
Keep a cancelled flag in the MCP task store. A cancel then also works across server instances. Not taken: no test needs it. The limit is in the docs and in a ponytail: comment.
Testing
Commands run
Gate 1 red runs were done in this worktree at commit 13b1ca918, which is origin/main. The source was the same as main. Only the new test files were added. They were not done in a separate detached worktree. Then the same tests ran on this branch.
late sandbox kept; program signal not aborted; wait ran 2 s and clicked
pass
Also ran locally:
The test files of each changed source file, --maxWorkers=2, 12 files or fewer per run. All pass, except ai-harness/tests/coding-snapshots.test.ts: it times out on Windows with and without this change (17 failures on main, 13 on this branch). Slow git meets a 5 s test timeout. This is not from this PR.
tsc and test:oxlint on every changed package: clean. oxfmt --check on every changed file: clean. pnpm test:docs: no broken links.
tsc on testing/e2e for the new spec in tests/computer-use.spec.ts: no errors. The spec did not run locally.
CI runs the rest: E2E, full unit suites, builds and publint, knip, sherif, coverage, and test:pr.
Manual test
Check out this branch. Put back the old source: git checkout origin/main -- packages/ai-mcp/src.
Run pnpm --dir packages/ai-mcp exec vitest run tests/server/create-server.test.ts -t "tasks/cancel" --maxWorkers=2. It fails with Method not found.
Restore the fix: git checkout HEAD -- packages/ai-mcp/src. Run the same command. It passes, and the task status is cancelled.
Repeat steps 1 to 3 with any package and test file in the table above.
How this PR makes testing easy
One new unit test for each fix. Each one is listed in the table above.
One new E2E spec in testing/e2e/tests/computer-use.spec.ts: a stopped run ends a wait action at once and runs no later action.
Risk / rollback
An MCP server with a task tool now advertises tasks.cancel. A host that sends tasks/cancel now really stops the task. Before, the call failed with Method not found.
harnessText now sends a cancel when the caller stops reading early. A caller that breaks out of the stream on purpose ends the inner turn too.
Roll back: revert the PR. Each package change is in its own commit.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
MCP task cancellation is now supported for in-process tasks, with a cancelled status.
Bug Fixes
Stopping a run now cancels pending questions, bridged tools, computer actions, and code execution more reliably.
Early stream cancellation stops the underlying run or process; search and snapshot operations receive cancellation signals.
Sandboxes created after cancellation are stopped or deleted.
Documentation
Clarified task cancellation and Code Mode stop behavior, including that started tool calls may continue unless they handle cancellation.
Review fixes (8486aed55)
CodeRabbit found these gaps on the same abort paths. Each new test failed on the branch before the fix and passes after it:
Fix
Test, red before the fix
Code mode does not run the code when the run aborts while the context is made
execute was called once
Code mode disposes the isolate once and awaits that same promise
dispose was called 2 times
Computer use: an action does not start when its call aborts while the machine starts
the call resolved with a screenshot
Computer use: the screenshot wait after an action ends on abort
timed out after 5 s
Harness: the shared rg --version probe no longer takes the call signal, so one aborted call cannot cache "no rg"
later calls never used rg
Daytona and Vercel check the abort again after the workdir is made, then delete or stop the sandbox
create returned a handle
Also: the E2E stop test fails on any error that is not the abort; the code mode docs say that only the Node and E2B drivers stop running code at once; the task status tables list cancelled.
Not changed: a failed workdir setup still leaves the Daytona or Vercel sandbox. That was true before this PR and has no repro here. The command-injection warnings on backend.exec(command) are about commands that our own code builds.
Second review (349955dc3 to db2a554ce)
Fix
Test, red before the fix
Harness: list_files and grep start no work (not even the rg probe) for a call that aborted already
both tools resolved with results
Code mode makes no isolate when the run aborts while the snippets load
createContext was called once
Computer use: navigate does not start when its call aborts while the machine starts
the page navigated
Computer use: a repeated key press and the modifier keys stop between steps on abort. Keys are still released. (The drag part is replaced in the fourth review.)
the action resolved after the abort
Also: the cancelled row of the task status table says that the cancel aborts only the task in this process, with a link to the shared-store note.
Out of scope: rejecting an aborted computer-use call while it waits in the shared queue for another thread. The queued work already does not run after an abort. Only the caller's wait for its turn is left.
Third review (a52b1a4e3 to d7b49de8a)
Fix
Test, red before the fix
Computer use: a drag that aborts during its last move rejects. (Replaced in the fourth review.)
the drag resolved
Code mode loads no snippets when the run aborts while the code is transpiled
getSnippetBindings was called once
Harness: list_files and grep reject a search that the abort stopped, instead of returning partial results
both tools returned results
Fourth review (41df967db, ac6478202)
Fix
Test, red before the fix
Computer use: a drag that started goes to its end point, also after an abort. Each mouseUp is a drop, so an abort after mouseDown made a click on the start element, and an abort between moves dropped the item at a point in the middle. The signal is now checked only before mouseDown, as on main for the rest of the drag
AbortError after mouseDown, and after the second of three moves
MCP: tasks/cancel keeps the result of a task that ends while the cancel runs. cancelTask reads the task again when no run is in this process. A terminal task keeps its status, and the handler returns the same error as for a task that ended before the cancel
the task became cancelled and its result was lost
The re-read is not a compare-and-set, because TaskStore has no such method. A result that a shared store saves between that read and the cancel write can still be replaced. A ponytail: comment names that limit.
Commands run: pnpm --dir packages/ai-computer-use exec vitest run tests/actions.test.ts --maxWorkers=2 (59 pass) and pnpm --dir packages/ai-mcp exec vitest run tests/server/create-server.test.ts tests/server/tasks.test.ts --maxWorkers=2 (63 pass). Both new tests failed on f2412897f. tsc on both packages: clean. oxlint --type-aware on the changed files: no new findings. oxfmt on the changed files.
With a signal, exec ran through a session, which caps each stream at
8 MiB. Inside chat() every tool call has a signal, so every exec would
get that cap. exec.command cannot be stopped mid-run, so this row needs
a different approach (exec.stream with Run.cancel) checked on a real box.

This PR propagates abort signals across agent integrations, tools, harness operations, MCP tasks, and sandbox providers. It also handles early stream termination and late sandbox creation, with tests, documentation updates, and patch changesets.
The three tool bridges use request.signal when an abort-controller signal is unavailable. Tests verify that the request signal reaches the bridge provisioner.
ACP and MCP pass abort signals to editor and harness elicitation waits. Tests cover signal propagation and an ACP question answered from another session.
Code Mode run cancellation packages/ai-code-mode/..., docs/code-mode/code-mode.md, docs/config.json, .changeset/abort-code-mode-run.md
An aborted run aborts program execution and disposes the isolate, including when abortion occurs during snippet loading or context creation. Tests cover these cases.
Computer-use actions receive the tool signal. Waits can reject on abortion, and OpenAI batches check the signal before each action. Cleanup releases held keys and mouse buttons.
Harness commands and streams packages/ai-harness/..., docs/harness/connect.md, docs/config.json, .changeset/abort-harness-exec-signal.md
Harness command execution receives the active call signal. Early termination of local or remote streams cancels the corresponding turn. Ripgrep availability probes use a never-aborted signal.
MCP advertises and handles task cancellation. In-process cancellation aborts the task signal and records a cancelled status. The settlement path skips saving late results after abortion.
Sandbox and process cleanup packages/ai-sandbox-daytona/..., packages/ai-sandbox-vercel/..., packages/ai-sandbox/..., .changeset/abort-sandbox-*
Daytona and Vercel providers clean up sandboxes returned after abortion. Early termination of NDJSON reading kills the process, and snapshot saving receives the tool-call signal.

Each package is measured twice in this job — on this PR and on its merge-base with main — and compared. A metric fails only when it is at or above 60% on the merge-base and under 60% on this PR. Other drops are listed but do not fail. Packages your PR doesn't affect are not measured and not listed.
This PR adds the cancelled status. The polling step on Line 69 and the new section both name it. The table that lists every status still shows only working, completed, and failed. Readers who use the table as the reference will not find the new status.

If the signal aborts while one driver.press is pending, the loop starts every remaining press after it completes. For repeat: 100, this can send many unwanted keystrokes. Check the signal before each press. Apply the same check between steps of other compound actions, while retaining key and mouse release cleanup. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

If another thread holds the shared queue, an aborted call remains pending until that thread finishes. A long wait or stuck driver can therefore keep the cancelled caller waiting indefinitely. Check the call signal before starting search work.
findRgOnce() can make an aborted first call wait for rg --version, but 30 seconds is only the probe timeout. The normal probe is a short version command, and the repository does not establish a 30-second typical delay. Keep the shared NEVER_ABORTS probe so an aborted caller does not poison the cache.
After the probe settles, filesUnder() and grepUnder() can still start rg, git, or fallback work for the aborted caller. Add an abort check before invoking those search engines. This is a narrow cancellation issue, not a major 30-second stall.

Fixed in 349955d. list_files and grep now throw at the start when the call signal has aborted already, so they start no search work and no rg --version probe. The shared probe keeps NEVER_ABORTS, so one aborted call cannot cache "no rg".
New test: %s starts no command for a call that aborted already (both tools) in tests/coding-search.test.ts. It failed before the fix (both tools resolved with results) and passes now.

@AlemTuzlak Thanks. The entry checks address calls that are already aborted and preserve the shared NEVER_ABORTS probe.
One part of the finding remains: cancellation while the probe is pending. In the supplied code, filesUnder() and grepUnder() still continue after await findRgOnce() without checking the call signal. The new test covers cancellation before entry, not this case.
Please add a post-probe abort check before starting a search engine. Add a test that holds the probe open, aborts the call, then releases the probe and verifies that no search work starts.

packages/ai-computer-use/src/actions.ts:201 (press with repeat): fixed in f65da49. A repeated key press checks the call signal before each press. withKeys checks it after each key-down, so no next key and no action start after an abort. drag checks it before mouseDown and before each move. The finally blocks still release the keys and the mouse button. New tests in tests/actions.test.ts ("an abort during a compound action") failed before the fix and pass now.
packages/ai-computer-use/src/create-computer-use.ts:263 (reject an aborted call while it waits in the shared queue): out of scope for this fix PR. It needs a heavier change to how the queue hands out work. The bug this PR fixes is already gone: queued work that aborted does not run when the queue reaches it (tested in does not run a queued action after its call aborts). Only the caller's wait for its turn is left, and we will not change that here.

@AlemTuzlak Thanks for the clarification.
Compound actions: The source and regression tests support your fix. Repeated presses check the signal before each press. Modifier setup and drag steps check for aborts, while cleanup still releases held keys and the mouse button. I did not run the tests.
Queue wait: Agreed to defer this change. runInThread checks the signal before queued work starts. The regression test covers skipping an aborted queued action. Immediate rejection while waiting remains a separate limitation, not a required change for this PR.
Would you like me to open a follow-up issue for immediate cancellation of the caller’s queue wait?

Check runSignal.aborted before invoking transpile in the transpilation flow,
using the same cancellation behavior as the existing post-transpile abort check;
retain that post-transpile check so aborts occurring during transpilation are
still handled.
If rg is unavailable and an abort stops the Git command, filesUnder starts walk after the command fails. The walk continues until it finishes, because hostBackend.readdir ignores the signal. The check at Line 454 runs only afterward. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
Check the signal after Git returns and between walk batches. Also cover an abort during the walk.

Update the filesUnder fallback flow so an aborted Git command does not start
walk, and check the abort signal between walk batches and during the walk so
processing stops promptly. Preserve the existing result and abort-handling
behavior, using the signal already available to this flow.

@AlemTuzlak Thanks. The source and regression tests support both fixes.
Code Mode: The tool checks runSignal after transpile() and before getSnippetBindings(). The regression test verifies that an abort during transpilation prevents snippet loading.
Harness search:list_files and grep check the call signal after search work. The regression test covers both tools and verifies rejection when an aborted command returns exit code 1.
Both reported concerns are addressed in the inspected source. I did not run the tests.

Check the signal after releasing wrapped keys.

Check the signal after releasing wrapped keys.
If the signal aborts while a click, move, or scroll driver call is pending, withKeys currently releases the keys and resolves normally. Add the abort check after cleanup so cleanup remains guaranteed while the wrapped action does not complete successfully after abort.

If the signal aborts while driver.press, driver.type, driver.move, driver.mouseDown, driver.mouseUp, driver.cursorPosition, or driver.zoom is pending, the current handler can return undefined or a result after the abort. runComputerAction only checks before dispatch, so it cannot enforce this boundary. Add post-await checks inside the Anthropic handler.

In the Anthropic action handler, add abort checks immediately after the awaited
direct driver calls in the key, type, mouse_move, left_mouse_down,
left_mouse_up, cursor_position, and zoom cases. For repeated key presses, check
after each press; for result-producing calls, check before returning the result
so an abort during the call cannot produce a successful response.

The signal-aware delay does not cover the following machine.screenshot() call. If the run aborts while that promise is pending, the tool can still return screenshot bytes after the run has aborted. Check the signal before starting the screenshot and after it resolves. The current ComputerDriver contract cannot cancel an already-started screenshot.

In the `result === undefined` branch after `runComputerAction`, check
`context?.abortSignal` before starting `machine.screenshot()` and again after it
resolves, so an aborted run cannot return screenshot bytes. Keep the existing
signal-aware delay and return the screenshot only after the post-resolution
check; do not assume the in-flight screenshot can be cancelled.

Each mouseUp is a drop. An abort after mouseDown made a click on the
start element, and an abort between moves dropped the item at a point
in the middle. The drag now checks the signal only before mouseDown.
The cancel handler read the task as working and then waited. When the
run ended in that gap, cancelTask saved cancelled over completed. Now
cancelTask reads the task again when no run is in this process, and
keeps a terminal status. The handler then returns an error.
Combine the abort changes of #1976 with the optional signals of this PR.
- ai-computer-use: use the new withKeys(driver, signal, keys, action)
order. withSignal now gives no signal and no abort check to a move
while a mouse button is down, so a drag that started always ends.
- ai-computer-use: keep runInThread and the withSignal machine in the
computer and navigate tools.
- ai-code-mode: use one run signal. When the run aborts and the driver
reports DisposedError, report AbortError.
- Keep the tests of both sides. Add a test for a drag through withSignal.
Resolve the conflicts with #1979, #1975 and #1976.
- realtime-client: keep the connectAbort design. An overtaken or
cancelled connect() rejects with AbortError. Keep the #1979 fixes: a
late connection is closed, a failed close does not set an error, and
a token refresh after disconnect() does not arm a new timer.
- abort-signal-reach tests: an overtaken connect() now rejects with
AbortError. The other checks did not change.
- generateVideo: keep raceWithAbort and the late body cancel. Send the
abort signal to getVideoStatus and getVideo.
- byteplus video: use the third request() argument for every call. The
caller signal and the config timeout go together on each request.
- openai video: create and retrieve both accept a signal.

New optional

Root cause
Issue. A caller aborts a
chat()run, or stops reading its stream. The work under that run keeps going: bridged agent tools, the agent process, harness turns, late sandboxes, Code Mode isolates and approval waits, computer-use waits and queued actions, and MCP task tools. This costs compute and money, or the run hangs.Cause. Each path had the signal, but one link dropped it:
options.abortController, whichchat()never sets.withCallSignalin the harness workspace wrapped every file call but notexec.spawnNdjsonandharnessTexthad no cleanup for an early stop of their generators.createignored a sandbox that came after the abort. Code ModeprogramEndand the computer-use sleeps were never linked to the call signal.tasks/cancelhandler. The ACP question request had no cancellation signal.Fix. Pass the signal that already exists to the step that dropped it. Where the SDK cannot cancel, clean up after the call returns: kill the process, cancel the turn, delete or stop the sandbox, or dispose the isolate.
Possible alternatives
createagainst the signal, asai-sandbox-e2bdoes. It frees the caller sooner. Not taken: more code, and the check aftercreatealready stops the leak.Sandbox.create. Not taken: it cancels only the HTTP request, so a sandbox that the server made has no owner.ComputerDrivercontracts. It also stops a QuickJS CPU loop. Not taken here: that is a public API change, so it is in the feat PR.cancelledflag in the MCP task store. A cancel then also works across server instances. Not taken: no test needs it. The limit is in the docs and in aponytail:comment.Testing
