fix(ai): run onAbort when a chat() consumer stops iterating - #2098
When a chat() consumer stops with break or return(), no terminal middleware hook runs: no onFinish, onAbort or onError. A middleware's run record, spans or sandbox then stay open. chat() now aborts the run when its consumer stops, so onAbort runs once, as the middleware docs promise.
🎯 Changes
TextEngine.run() in packages/ai/src/activities/chat/index.ts now wraps the old body, renamed runSteps(). If the consumer does not resume after a chunk, run() aborts the run before the loop closes runSteps(). The finally in runSteps() then reports onAbort.
Unit test: tests/consumer-stop-terminal-hook.test.ts stops a fakeText() run with break and with return(), and drains one run as a control.
E2E: a chat.spec.ts case. A new route, api.chat-consumer-stop.ts, iterates chat() over aimock, breaks at the first text chunk, and returns the terminal hooks that ran. routeTree.gen.ts is the generated route tree.
Docs: the onAbort row in docs/advanced/middleware-advanced.md now lists a consumer that stops iterating. Both middleware pages already say that exactly one terminal hook runs per chat() call. This is a factual fix, so docs/config.json does not change.
I have tested code changes locally with pnpm run test:pr, or these tests do not apply to this pull request.
I fully understand the code in this pull request, including any code generated with AI assistance.
Docs: I updated docs/ for this change, or this change is not user-facing.
Changeset: I added a changeset (pnpm changeset), or this PR does not change a published package.
🚀 Release Impact
This change affects published code, and I have generated a changeset.
This change is docs/CI/dev-only (no release).
Root cause
Issue. A chat() consumer that stops iterating, with break in for await or with the iterator's return(), runs no terminal middleware hook. This occurs with every adapter. The docs say exactly one terminal hook runs per chat() call (docs/advanced/middleware.md, docs/advanced/middleware-advanced.md).
Cause.return() at a yield in TextEngine.run() skips runTerminalHook() and the catch. The finally calls onAbort only when isCancelled() is true. The run is not cancelled, so no hook runs.
Fix.run() now iterates runSteps() (the old body) and yields each chunk. If the consumer stops at that yield, run() aborts the run's middleware controller first. The for await loop then closes runSteps(), and its finally sees a cancelled run and calls onAbort. Core's own cancel path in stream-to-response.ts uses the same order: abort, then return().
Possible alternatives
Call onAbort in the finally whenever no hook ran. This is one line. But the boundary-interrupt paths at beforeModel and afterModel also return with no hook and no cancel, and this rule would give them onAbort too. A pause is not an abort.
Fix it in each integration that calls return(), such as ai-effect. Each integration would need its own fix, and plain for await users would still get no hook. The engine is the one place that every streaming caller of engine.run() goes through.

The control case, a full drain, records ['onFinish'] on both sides. With the abort line removed and only the run() / runSteps() split kept, the same 3 cases fail. So both parts are needed.
Manual test
On main, add this PR's test file. Run pnpm --filter @tanstack/ai exec vitest run tests/consumer-stop-terminal-hook.test.ts. Three cases fail with an empty hook list.
On this branch, run the same command. All 4 cases pass.
Build @tanstack/ai. Then run pnpm --filter @tanstack/ai-e2e exec playwright test tests/chat.spec.ts --grep "breaks out". The route returns { "hooks": ["onAbort"] }.
How this PR makes testing easy. The unit test uses fakeText(), so it needs no network and no provider. The E2E route returns the hook list as JSON, so a failure shows which hooks ran.
A break at the final RUN_FINISHED gives onAbort. All output was delivered, so onFinish is arguably correct. Core yields the final RUN_FINISHED before runTerminalHook(). To make this case onFinish, the engine would need a "final terminal already yielded" flag. I left that out to keep the change small. The test asserts one hook for this case, not which one. I can change it either way.
Boundary-interrupt pauses. The returns after emitBoundaryInterrupts('beforeModel') and emitBoundaryInterrupts('afterModel') exit with no hook and no cancel. From reading the code (not run), those pauses run no terminal hook either, although the docs say onFinish runs on pauses. This PR does not change them.
Risk / rollback
Low. A run that the consumer drains to the end does not change. A consumer that stops early now gets onAbort, and the abort also cancels the in-flight provider request when the caller passed a signal. A middleware that did cleanup only in onFinish sees no change. To undo, revert the PR.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Middleware now receives onAbort when chat stream consumption stops early, including when iteration ends after a completed run. Fully consumed streams still receive onFinish.
Tests
Added coverage for stopping chat streams early and verifying that exactly one terminal hook runs.
The engine aborts the run when the consumer stops at a yield (break or
return()), so runSteps()'s finally reports onAbort and every run gets
exactly one terminal hook.

The description is thorough and follows the template. It has the Changes section (engine, unit test, E2E, docs, changeset), all checklist items marked, and the Release Impact section. It also adds a root cause, fix, testing evidence, linked issues, open questions, and risk notes. The template's Changes section is filled in with specific detail. The description does not state an explicit reason for the unchecked CI/docs-only option, but that option is correctly left unchecked because this change affects published code.

Explanation
Each changed file connects to the objective in [#2097]:
packages/ai/src/activities/chat/index.ts: the run() and runSteps() split and the abort step. This is the fix.
packages/ai/tests/consumer-stop-terminal-hook.test.ts: unit tests for break, return(), and a full-drain control. These are supporting tests.
testing/e2e/src/routes/api.chat-consumer-stop.ts, testing/e2e/tests/chat.spec.ts, and testing/e2e/src/routeTree.gen.ts: an E2E case and its generated route registration. These are supporting tests.

.changeset/chat-consumer-stop-onabort.md: patch changeset for @tanstack/ai. This is release metadata for the fix.
The PR does not change boundary-interrupt paths (beforeModel and afterModel), which #2097 excludes. The PR does not add unrelated refactors or features in the summarized files. The unrelated flaky E2E failure (harness-protocol-inputs.spec.ts) is a test result, not a scope change. The summary's line counts for index.ts were not confirmed against a readable diff. This does not change the scope conclusion.

Explanation
Objective [#2097]: stopping chat() iteration with break or iterator return() must run exactly one terminal middleware hook, expected to be onAbort. Evidence reviewed:
Verified: docs/advanced/middleware-advanced.md at head adds 'a consumer that stopped iterating (break or return())' to the onAbort row. This is a documentation match only.
Summary and PR description: TextEngine.run() wraps the former body, now runSteps(). When the consumer stops at a yielded chunk, run() aborts middlewareAbortController before closing runSteps(). runSteps()'s finally then reports onAbort. This matches the fix proposed in #2097.
Not verified: the diff of packages/ai/src/activities/chat/index.ts returned a missing-blob error. A head file read was truncated at 16000 bytes before TextEngine.run(). The behavior of isCancelled() and the finally block therefore could not be read.
Not verified: tests/consumer-stop-terminal-hook.test.ts and the E2E route were not readable. The 3-fail-on-main and 4-pass-on-branch results are author-reported.
Excluded paths: boundary-interrupt pauses (#2097) and the pending-read case (#2094) are not in the required scope. The PR does not change them. The final RUN_FINISHED case that yields onAbort matches the expectation in #2097.
Unresolved: whether the runSteps() finally reports onAbort after run() aborts the controller depends on pre-existing code that was not inspected.
Resolution
Provide readable head content of packages/ai/src/activities/chat/index.ts for TextEngine.run(), runSteps(), and the runSteps() finally block. Also provide the isCancelled() definition and its link to middlewareAbortController. Provide the content of tests/consumer-stop-terminal-hook.test.ts to confirm its assertions for break, return(), and full drain.

Preserve pause handling when a consumer stops at the interrupt.
If a consumer breaks after a client-tool or approval RUN_FINISHED, this calls onAbort instead of onFinish. Without detachable durability, withSandbox then destroys the sandbox needed for the paused run. Preserve the pause terminal handling when the iterator closes at this event.
