PPLT-6244: Fix CDP resize on Ruby 3; exact responsive widths and closed shadow roots - #43
change_window_dimension_and_wait called driver.execute_cdp('Emulation.setDeviceMetricsOverride', { ... },). Selenium declares execute_cdp(cmd, **params), so on Ruby 3 the braced Hash is a second positional argument and raises ArgumentError (given 2, expected 1). The rescue hid it and fell back to window.resize_to, which can't go below Chrome's minimum window width: with responsive_snapshot_capture and widths [375, 1280], the 375 snapshot was captured at 500.
Upgrade-caused?
Pre-existing. Same behaviour on selenium-webdriver 4.36.0; it comes from Ruby 3 keyword-argument rules, not Selenium 4.50.
Fix
Pass the CDP options as keyword arguments.
New spec runs the real Selenium::WebDriver::DriverExtensions::HasCDP#execute_cdp on a Chrome driver stub and asserts the CDP command is sent with no resize_to fallback (fails on main with the exact ArgumentError). The existing CDP spec now expects keyword arguments.
CI: adds a Ruby 3.3 + selenium-webdriver 4.50.0 matrix row via a SELENIUM_VERSION Gemfile override (the 2.6/2.7 rows are unchanged).
Four readiness specs passed readiness: {...} as bare keywords to get_serialized_dom(driver, options, percy_dom_script: nil); Ruby 3 treats those as unknown keywords. They now pass an explicit Hash (spec-only change; needed for the Ruby 3.3 row).
Testing
bundle exec rspec on Ruby 3.3.6 with selenium-webdriver 4.50.0 and 4.51.0: 149 examples, 0 failures, 1 pending (main: 4 failures on Ruby 3.3). Rubocop clean.
S1, exact responsive width (pre-existing). Responsive capture resized the window, so Edge's border and the OS minimum window width (500 px on macOS, 516 px outer on Windows) produced 492/1272 on Edge and 500 on Firefox. Mobile media queries never applied.
Each width now uses the first mechanism that works:
CDP setDeviceMetricsOverride on any Chromium browser, including Edge and remote sessions.
BiDi browsingContext.setViewport when the session has webSocketUrl: true.
A window resize corrected by the measured border, with a one-time warning when it can't reach the width.
Restore clears the override instead of re-applying it. This fixes a leak where device pixel ratio dropped and later resizes stopped working.
S2, closed shadow roots (partial). Closed roots are now exposed before serialize via CDP, then BiDi (includeShadowTree: 'all'), then classic Get Element Shadow Root.
The classic path runs only on local drivers and is capped at PERCY_CLOSED_SHADOW_MAX_HOSTS (default 200). On a remote grid it took ~16 min, so remote sessions skip it unless PERCY_CLOSED_SHADOW_CLASSIC=true.
Safari returns null for closed roots, so they are skipped there.
Baselines shift once for: Edge, Firefox with BiDi, remote Chromium, and pages with closed shadow roots.
Steps to reproduce: responsive snapshot at widths 375/1280 on Edge → innerWidth posted as 492/1272. A page with attachShadow({mode:'closed'}) → closed content missing from the DOM.
Ruby specifics: this builds on the keyword-argument CDP fix above. Specs now call the real HasCDP#execute_cdp, so a positional hash would fail. BiDi goes through driver.bidi.send_cmd.
Results (375 / 1280): Chrome 500/1280 → 375/1280; Edge 492/1272 → 375/1280; Firefox + BiDi 375/1280; Firefox without BiDi 500/1280 + warning. DPR is unchanged after capture. S2 ✓ on Chrome, Edge and Firefox ± BiDi (was ✗ everywhere).
Testing: 200 examples, 100% coverage; CI green on Ruby 2.6, 2.7 and 3.3.
…s on Ruby 3
Selenium declares execute_cdp(cmd, **params). The braced Hash was a
positional argument, so Ruby 3 raised ArgumentError and responsive capture
silently fell back to window.resize_to, which cannot go below Chrome's
minimum window width (375 was captured at 500).
Also certify Ruby 3.3 + selenium-webdriver 4.50.0 in CI (SELENIUM_VERSION
Gemfile override) and make the readiness specs pass an explicit options
Hash, which Ruby 3 no longer converts from keywords.

Percy now exposes eligible closed shadow roots before DOM serialization. Responsive capture selects and records viewport resize mechanisms, then restores the original viewport. The CI matrix adds Selenium 4.50.0 coverage on Ruby 3.3.
Changes: Capture and Selenium compatibility
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Selenium version selection and CI setup .github/workflows/test.yml, Gemfile, spec/lib/percy/percy_spec.rb
The CI matrix adds a Ruby 3.3 job with Selenium 4.50.0. The workflow exports the Selenium version and includes it in bundle cache keys. The Gemfile adds selenium-webdriver when SELENIUM_VERSION is set. Readiness specs pass options as positional hashes.
Before serialization, Percy tries CDP, then BiDi, then eligible classic WebDriver exposure. The implementations enforce host limits and handle failed lookups or script calls. Specs cover exposure strategies and fallback behavior.
Responsive viewport resizing and restoration lib/percy.rb, spec/lib/percy/percy_spec.rb
Responsive capture selects exact or non-exact resizing mechanisms, records each mechanism, and restores the original viewport. Specs cover browser-specific resizing, option precedence, restoration, and capture integration.

[Medium] Spec couples to Selenium internals
The spec includes HasCDP, sets the private @bridge and expects send_command(cmd:, params:). A Selenium refactor of any of these breaks the spec for reasons unrelated to Percy.
Suggestion: Add skip unless defined?(Selenium::WebDriver::DriverExtensions::HasCDP) and a comment that the coupling is intentional.
Fixes Chrome responsive resize on Ruby 3. execute_cdp('Emulation.setDeviceMetricsOverride', ...) now passes its params as keyword arguments to match Selenium's execute_cdp(cmd, **params). Before this fix, the positional Hash raised ArgumentError, which the rescue swallowed, so resize silently fell back to resize_to. The PR also wraps the get_serialized_dom spec options in braces so the specs pass on Ruby 3, adds a spec that runs the real HasCDP#execute_cdp, and adds a Ruby 3.3 / selenium-webdriver 4.50.0 CI leg driven by SELENIUM_VERSION.

Findings

Severity: Medium
Reviewer: stack-code-reviewer (also noted by stack-percy-web-sdks-code-reviewer)
Issue: The new spec depends on three Selenium internals: it includes Selenium::WebDriver::DriverExtensions::HasCDP, sets the private @bridge ivar, and expects bridge.send_command(cmd:, params:). A Selenium refactor of any of these breaks the spec for reasons unrelated to Percy. The Ruby 2.6/2.7 legs also resolve an unpinned Selenium.
Suggestion: Keep the spec, since it is the only guard on Ruby 2.x, but add skip unless defined?(Selenium::WebDriver::DriverExtensions::HasCDP). Add a comment that the spec intentionally couples to Selenium internals.
Issue: The only Ruby 3 leg pins selenium-webdriver 4.50.0, and 4.51.0 is already out. The Ruby 2.x legs run unpinned. Gemfile.lock is gitignored, so hashFiles('**/Gemfile.lock') is empty, but that was already true before this PR.
Suggestion: Add a second Ruby 3 leg with selenium: '' (latest), or plan regular bumps of the pin.
File:lib/percy.rb:346
Severity: Low
Reviewer: stack:percy-web-sdks-code-review
Issue: Pre-existing behaviour that Ruby 3 now reaches. The restore step re-applies setDeviceMetricsOverride and never calls Emulation.clearDeviceMetricsOverride, so the override stays in effect for the rest of the test. Ruby 2.x and the sibling Selenium SDKs already behave this way.
Suggestion: Not blocking. Open a cross-SDK follow-up to clear the override in the restore step.
Docs coverage (stack-percy-docs-reviewer): N/A, not an architectural change. Unrelated, non-gating KB gap: flow-snapshot-selenium.md and FEATURE-FLAGS.md describe CDP resize as JS-only, but the Ruby port already does it too.
Verdict: PASS — correct, minimal fix with a real-signature regression test. Remaining items are Medium/Low.

… shadow roots
Responsive capture (S1): set the viewport with the first mechanism the
session supports instead of resizing the OS window, which cannot go below
~500px and includes Edge's 8px border (375 became 492/500, 1280 became 1272).
- Chromium family (chrome, chromium, msedge, MicrosoftEdge,
chrome-headless-shell, or any non-Firefox/Safari driver with execute_cdp):
Emulation.setDeviceMetricsOverride via execute_cdp(cmd, **params).
- BiDi, only when the session already has a webSocketUrl: raw
browsingContext.setViewport (the Ruby binding's typed API is @api private).
- Otherwise resize the window, measure innerWidth and correct by the border
once; if the width is still off, log at debug and warn once per session
suggesting webSocketUrl: true.
- Restore clears the override (clearDeviceMetricsOverride / setViewport with
a null viewport) instead of re-applying it at the outer window size, which
left Chrome's viewport and DPR frozen after the snapshot.
- The wait now checks innerWidth instead of a resize-event counter.
- exactResponsiveWidth (per-snapshot option, then config.snapshot from the
healthcheck, default true) set to false keeps the old Chrome-only CDP path,
with the restore fix.
Closed shadow roots (S2): before PercyDOM.serialize, fill
window.__percyClosedShadowRoots with the first available strategy: CDP
(DOM.getDocument pierce), BiDi script.callFunction with
includeShadowTree: 'all' (only with an existing webSocketUrl), or classic
Get Element Shadow Root on local drivers only (capped by
PERCY_CLOSED_SHADOW_MAX_HOSTS, default 200; remote opt-in via
PERCY_CLOSED_SHADOW_CLASSIC=true). Skipped with disableShadowDOM; failures
are logged and never fail the snapshot.
Specs drive CDP through the real HasCDP#execute_cdp and BiDi through a
send_cmd(method, **params) stand-in, so a positional Hash would fail them.

1065-1088: The coupling to Selenium internals was already reported.
chrome_driver_with_bridge includes HasCDP, writes the private @bridge instance variable, and expects send_command(cmd:, params:). The previous review already covers this coupling and the suggested skip unless defined?(Selenium::WebDriver::DriverExtensions::HasCDP) guard. The same pattern repeats at Line 1236 and Line 2051.

1170-1189: 🎯 Functional Correctness
The warn-once assertion is not order-dependent.
The outer before(:each) calls Percy._clear_cache! before every example, so @viewport_warned_sessions is reset even when examples share session ID s-1.
1268-1292: 🩺 Stability & Availability
The claim that the real BiDi restore path always takes the "no raw socket" branch is contradicted by the Selenium 4.50.0 source. Selenium::WebDriver::BiDi exposes ws through a public attr_reader, so bidi.respond_to?(:ws) returns true for a real instance. The spec's stub of respond_to?(:ws) to true matches the real class. The reviewed code therefore reaches the bidi.ws.send_cmd path, which sends viewport: nil as the comment says it should.
The # @api private tag marks the reader as private API. It does not make the method Ruby-private. The excerpt shows attr_reader :ws with no private keyword directly above it. The public send_cmd method is defined later in the same class and is called from outside, so a private keyword above it would have made it private too.
The comment's conclusion that window.resize_to is the only effect on the real path does not follow, so no restore-path defect remains here. The test-fidelity suggestion (building the spec on a real BiDi instance) is a preference, not a demonstrated defect, and the existing stub mirrors the public reader.
…h fails
Reading innerWidth after the override could raise (e.g. an unexpected alert),
which lost the mechanism and left CDP/BiDi emulation on the user's driver.
The read now logs and returns an empty size. The window-border correction
also only runs when the viewport is narrower than requested; a wider one
means the OS minimum width was hit and a smaller (possibly negative) window
cannot help.

Retry the viewport read before skipping border correction.
viewport_size converts a failed execute_script call into {}, so actual becomes nil. The correction returns before a later read can show that the viewport is narrower than requested. The existing retry runs only after this correction decision, so capture can continue with a narrower viewport while recording the requested width.
Retry the width read, or defer the correction until a non-nil width is available.
