Jira: https://browserstack.atlassian.net/browse/PPLT-6233 (epic PPLT-6210)

Problem

  1. percy exec --port <N> exports only PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS. Cypress specs run in the browser, which only sees CYPRESS_* OS variables, and Cypress 16 removed both Cypress.env() and cy.exec. So @percy/cypress on a non-default port silently snapshots against :5338 and the build is empty. Pre-existing; Cypress 16 removes the last workaround.
  2. When Percy is disabled, PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS, PERCY_BUILD_ID and PERCY_BUILD_URL were set to the string "undefined" (env is process.env). Pre-existing.
  3. Feature parity S1 (Task Brief): Selenium SDKs now set exact responsive viewport widths on Edge, Firefox (BiDi) and remote Chrome. Users need a way to keep the old behaviour, and a heads-up that those baselines shift once.

Fix

  • cli-exec: export CYPRESS_PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS (always set to the live address) for the Cypress SDK only, with a comment explaining why. Per review, no other alias is exported: PERCY_CLI_API is not exported; the Python and .NET SDKs now read PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS themselves (percy-selenium-python#277, percy-playwright-python#179, percy-selenium-dotnet#525, percy-playwright-dotnet#294).
  • cli-exec: PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS, PERCY_BUILD_ID and PERCY_BUILD_URL are only set when they have a value.
  • core: new snapshot.exactResponsiveWidth (boolean, default true), in .percy.yml and per snapshot. SDKs read it from /percy/healthcheck → config.snapshot.exactResponsiveWidth; older CLIs lack the key and SDKs treat that as true.
  • core: once per build, an info line on the first responsive DOM snapshot explains that Edge, Firefox and remote-Chrome baselines may shift once and how to opt out.

Steps to reproduce (problem 1)

percy exec --port 5501 -- cypress run with @percy/cypress on Cypress 16 → "Percy is not running, disabling snapshots", empty build.

Testing

  • cli-exec: 77/77 specs pass locally (new: Cypress var reaches the child and overrides a stale value; nothing is set to "undefined" when Percy is disabled).
  • core: 6 new specs (healthcheck default, notice once, opt-outs, per-snapshot schema in camel and snake case). All Test @percy/* CI jobs pass.
  • Builds: Cypress on --port before the fix, 0 snapshots: 54668880. With this branch exporting the address: 54715393.

Release notes

  • percy exec exports CYPRESS_PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS.
  • New option snapshot.exactResponsiveWidth (default true).

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

… percy exec

The Python and .NET SDKs read PERCY_CLI_API and the Cypress browser only
sees CYPRESS_-prefixed vars, so with a non-default --port they fell back
to 5338 and silently disabled snapshots. Export both with the server
address, keeping any value the user already set.

Walkthrough

When Percy is disabled, exec no longer assigns null Percy values to the child environment. Snapshot configuration adds exactResponsiveWidth, and the snapshot API logs a notice for eligible multi-entry DOM snapshots unless the effective setting is false.

Changes: Exec environment

Layer / File(s) Summary
Conditionally assign Percy environment variables
packages/cli-exec/src/exec.js, packages/cli-exec/test/exec.test.js
exec assigns the server address, build ID, and build URL only when each value is non-null. When a server address is available, it replaces an inherited CYPRESS_PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS. Tests cover both behaviors and clear the address during teardown.

Exact responsive-width notice

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure and log the responsive-width notice
packages/core/src/config.js, packages/core/types/index.d.ts, packages/core/src/api.js, packages/core/test/api.test.js, packages/core/test/percy.test.js, packages/core/test/snapshot.test.js
The snapshot schema defaults exactResponsiveWidth to true and exposes the option in the shared snapshot type. The snapshot API checks the effective setting and logs once per Percy instance for eligible multi-entry DOM snapshots. Tests cover notice conditions, defaults, and option validation.

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 0616e

Percy exec now passes the custom port to Python and .NET SDKs through PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS, but Cypress 16 users may still not receive it and could skip snapshots. The responsive-width notice can also be skipped for some batched snapshots. Resolve or explicitly accept the Cypress integration gap before merging.

[Medium] Inherited or stale value silently wins over the live --port address

||= keeps any PERCY_CLI_API or CYPRESS_PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS already in the environment, for example from an outer percy exec or a CI config hard-coding :5338. PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS is always overwritten, so with --port 4567 the vars disagree and the Python, .NET and Cypress SDKs silently hit the wrong server. That is the bug this PR fixes.

Suggestion: Overwrite unconditionally like PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS, or keep ||= and log.debug/log.warn when the kept value differs from address. Either way, document the precedence.

[Low] PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS becomes the string "undefined" when Percy is disabled (pre-existing)

env is process.env (cli-command/src/command.js:219), so assigning undefined stores "undefined". The new if (address) guard protects only the two new vars.

Suggestion: Move this assignment inside the guard. A follow-up PR is fine.

[Low] Disabled-path spec doesn't assert that Percy was actually disabled

This spec only checks that the vars are absent. There is also no spec for an inherited or stale value.

Suggestion: Assert [percy] Percy is disabled in logger.stderr, and add a nested or stale spec once the ||= precedence is decided.

Claude Code PR Review

PR: #2466 • Head: 6539aa2 • Reviewers: stack:percy-cli-code-review, stack-percy-cli-code-reviewer, stack-percy-docs-reviewer

Summary

percy exec (and app:exec, which shares the callback) now also exports PERCY_CLI_API and CYPRESS_PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS. Both are set to percy.address() when Percy is running, and a value the user already set is kept (||=). This lets the Python, .NET and Cypress SDKs follow a non-default --port. Three new cli-exec specs cover it.

Findings

  • File: packages/cli-exec/src/exec.js:117

  • Severity: Medium

  • Reviewer: stack:percy-cli-code-review, stack-percy-cli-code-reviewer

  • Issue: ||= keeps any value of PERCY_CLI_API or CYPRESS_PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS that is already in the environment, while PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS is always overwritten. The value might come from an outer percy exec, or be hard-coded in CI (for example PERCY_CLI_API=http://localhost:5338). With --port 4567 the three vars then disagree, and the Python, .NET and Cypress SDKs silently talk to the wrong server. That brings back the bug this PR fixes, with nothing logged.

  • Suggestion: Make the precedence explicit. Either overwrite unconditionally, as PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS already is (--port is the explicit signal), or keep ||= and log.debug/log.warn when the kept value differs from address. Record the decision in the PR description, and consider a spec for the nested or stale case.

  • File: packages/cli-exec/src/exec.js:112

  • Severity: Low

  • Reviewer: stack:percy-cli-code-review, stack-percy-cli-code-reviewer

  • Issue: This predates the PR, but the block was touched. env is process.env (cli-command/src/command.js:219). When Percy is disabled, env.PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS = undefined stores the string "undefined". The same happens to PERCY_BUILD_ID and PERCY_BUILD_URL. The new if (address) guard protects only the two new vars.

  • Suggestion: Optionally move the PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS assignment inside the guard (or delete the var when there is no address). A follow-up PR is fine.

  • File: packages/cli-exec/test/exec.test.js:453

  • Severity: Low

  • Reviewer: stack:percy-cli-code-review, stack-percy-cli-code-reviewer

  • Issue: The disabled-path spec only checks that the two vars are absent. It never asserts that Percy actually ran in the disabled path. There is also no spec for an inherited or stale value.

  • Suggestion: Assert [percy] Percy is disabled in logger.stderr. Add a nested or stale spec once the precedence for the Medium finding above is settled.

  • File: packages/cli-exec/src/exec.js:115

  • Severity: Low

  • Reviewer: stack:percy-cli-code-review

  • Issue: percy exec now exports new env vars that users will see, but there is no changelog note (rules/commit-conventions.md, rule 5).

  • Suggestion: Add a release-notes line to the PR description.

Docs coverage

stack-percy-docs-reviewer: N/A. This isn't an architectural change, so no KB PR was opened. Optional, not gating: when .claude/knowledge/domain/GLOSSARY.md, PRODUCT.md and FEATURE-FLAGS.md are next edited, mention the two new vars in their lists of daemon-address env vars.

Verdict: PASS — the change is correct and tested, with no High or Critical findings. Settle the ||= precedence question before merge.

Ideally we don't want 2 envs serving same thing, let's hold on it for now and add SDK support for PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS in all SDKs so that we don't need 2

…veWidth

Per review, the CLI keeps PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS as the only address export;
SDKs gain PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS support instead of the CLI exporting
PERCY_CLI_API / CYPRESS_PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS.

- percy exec only sets PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS / PERCY_BUILD_ID /
  PERCY_BUILD_URL when they have a value, so a disabled run no longer
  exports the string "undefined".
- add snapshot.exactResponsiveWidth (boolean, default true), also
  accepted per snapshot; SDKs read it from the healthcheck config.
- log once per Percy instance on the first responsive DOM snapshot that
  exact widths may shift some baselines once.

Recognize supported DOM snapshot field names.

If an SDK posts a multi-entry dom_snapshot or dom-snapshot, this check skips the notice. Snapshot validation recognizes both field names, so the snapshot can proceed without the baseline-shift warning. Normalize each entry before this check, or check all three supported field names. Check every responsive snapshot in a batch.

If the first multi-entry DOM snapshot sets exactResponsiveWidth: false, find() selects it and the notice returns. A later snapshot in the same request can use exact widths without a notice. Apply the effective-setting check inside the search predicate so an opted-out entry does not hide an eligible entry.

Cypress specs run in the browser and only see CYPRESS_-prefixed OS vars, and
Cypress 16 removed cy.exec, so the SDK has no zero-config way to read
PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS. Every other SDK reads PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS directly.

### `Cypress.env()` removed

`Cypress.env()` has been removed in Cypress 16.0. Use `cy.env()` for sensitive values (API keys, tokens, secrets) or `Cypress.expose()` for non-sensitive configuration that needs synchronous browser access.

See Migrating away from Cypress.env() below for detailed before/after examples.

### `env` removed from test config overrides

The `env` key is no longer valid in per-test or suite config overrides. Test config overrides run in the browser, so `env` values set there could never be applied server-side. If absolutely necessary, `expose` can be used instead.

# @percy/cypress

Percy visual testing for Cypress.

## Installation

    $ npm install --save-dev @percy/cli @percy/cypress

Then add to your `cypress/support/index.js` file

    import '@percy/cypress'

## Usage

This is an example using the `cy.percySnapshot` command.

    describe('My app', () => {
      it('should look good', () => {
        cy.get('body').should('have.class', 'finished-loading');
        cy.percySnapshot();

        cy.get('button').click();
        cy.percySnapshot('Clicked button');
      });
    });

Running the test above will result in the following log:

    $ cypress run
    ...
    [percy] Percy is not running, disabling snapshots
Upgrade SDK to @percy/cypress@3.0.0? Yes

This will automatically run the changes described below for you.

### Manually

#### Installing `@percy/cli`

If you're coming from a pre-3.0 version of this package, make sure to install `@percy/cli` after upgrading to retain any existing scripts that reference the Percy CLI command.

    $ npm install --save-dev @percy/cli

#### Removing tasks

If you're coming from 2.x the health check task, `@percy/cypress/task`, is no longer needed and no longer exists. You should remove this task from your `cypress/plugins/index.js` file.

#### Migrating Config

If you have a previous Percy configuration file, migrate it to the newest version with the `config:migrate` command:

    $ percy config:migrate

# Environment Variable Access in Cypress v15.10.0+: Migrating to cy.env() and Cypress.expose()

February 3, 2026

•

By Jenna Beckett

Starting in Cypress 15.10.0, Cypress.env() is deprecated and will be removed in Cypress 16.0.0.

This change is driven by the way Cypress.env() hydrates all Cypress environment values into the browser context, including values a test may never read. This makes it easy to unintentionally expose more data than intended.

We have not seen reports of this being exploited, but we are implementing this deprecation (and future removal) to move Cypress toward safer defaults and more explicit control over how configuration values are exposed during test execution. Teams may choose to rotate existing secrets as part of their normal security practices, but there is no indication of any event requiring urgency around that action.

What to do if you’re on Cypress 15.10.0+

  * Migrate usage of Cypress.env()
    * Use cy.env() for sensitive values that should remain outside the browser

Provide the Percy address through Cypress expose, not only CYPRESS_* environment variables.

exec.js:124 sets a child-process environment variable. The Cypress migration contract for @percy/cypress 3.1.8+ moves PERCY_* values from env to expose. Therefore, this export alone can leave the SDK without the custom Percy address on Cypress 16. Update the SDK or provide an expose-compatible configuration path, then add a Cypress 16 end-to-end test. cy.env() is not the correct synchronous replacement for this non-sensitive configuration.

Update the sdkEnv handling so PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS is available through
Cypress’s expose-compatible configuration, rather than relying only on
CYPRESS_PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS; preserve synchronous access for this non-sensitive
setting. Add a Cypress 16 end-to-end test verifying the custom Percy address
reaches the SDK.
