Selenium 4.50 marks HttpCommandExecutor.getAddressOfRemoteServer() for removal (forRemoval=true). DriverMetadata calls it directly to find the hub URL, so it warns now and will throw NoSuchMethodError once Selenium drops the method. Selenium 4.50 and 4.51 have no replacement on HttpCommandExecutor. The non-deprecated source is RemoteWebDriver.getClientConfig().baseUri(), which is in 4.50 but not in 4.5.3, 4.10 or 4.36.
Fix
DriverMetadata resolves the hub URL in this order, all reflectively, so one jar works from Selenium 4.5.3 to 4.50+:
RemoteWebDriver.getClientConfig().baseUri()
If that returns nothing: the existing TracedCommandExecutor unwrap, then getAddressOfRemoteServer()
Last resort: the private remoteServer field (present in both 4.5.3 and 4.50)
pom:
selenium.version 4.50.0, with a JDK-1.8-activated profile that keeps 4.5.3 for the Java 8 CI job (Selenium 4.14+ needs Java 11). Compile target stays 1.8.
Removes the leaked compile-scope selenium-firefox-driver 4.5.3; selenium-java already provides it. This changes the published dependency list.
Adds com.google.code.findbugs:jsr305 3.0.2 as provided, because javax.annotation.Nullable no longer comes through Selenium 4.50.
Testing
javac -Xlint:removal against 4.50: master shows the getAddressOfRemoteServer forRemoval warning; this branch shows none.
6 new CacheTest cases cover each resolution path. Two PercyDriverPathTest mocks now stub getCapabilities, which the 4.50 WebDriverWait timeout message reads.
mvn verify on Selenium 4.50 / JDK 21: 120 of 121 pass. SdkTest errors locally only because Firefox isn't installed on this machine (SessionNotCreated: unable to find binary). Port 8000 was free. CI installs Firefox.
-Pjava8 (Selenium 4.5.3): 118 pass, 2 skipped (the getClientConfig cases, which need 4.50).
Percy on Automate, with this SDK installed locally and the fixed example caps:
S1, exact responsive width (pre-existing). Responsive capture resized the window, so Edge's border and the OS minimum window width (500 px on macOS, 516 px outer on Windows) produced 492/1272 on Edge and 500 on Firefox. Mobile media queries never applied.
Each width now uses the first mechanism that works:
CDP setDeviceMetricsOverride on any Chromium browser, including Edge and remote sessions.
BiDi browsingContext.setViewport when the session has webSocketUrl: true.
A window resize corrected by the measured border, with a one-time warning when it can't reach the width.
Restore clears the override instead of re-applying it. This fixes a leak where device pixel ratio dropped and later resizes stopped working.
S2, closed shadow roots (partial). Closed roots are now exposed before serialize via CDP, then BiDi (includeShadowTree: 'all'), then classic Get Element Shadow Root.
The classic path runs only on local drivers and is capped at PERCY_CLOSED_SHADOW_MAX_HOSTS (default 200). On a remote grid it took ~16 min, so remote sessions skip it unless PERCY_CLOSED_SHADOW_CLASSIC=true.
Safari returns null for closed roots, so they are skipped there.
Baselines shift once for: Edge, Firefox with BiDi, remote Chromium, and pages with closed shadow roots.
Steps to reproduce: responsive snapshot at widths 375/1280 on Edge → innerWidth posted as 492/1272. A page with attachShadow({mode:'closed'}) → closed content missing from the DOM.
Java specifics: remote Chrome uses Augmenter → HasCdp; remote Edge posts to ms/cdp/execute, because the Augmenter always targets goog/cdp/execute, which msedgedriver rejects (verified on Automate Edge/Win11 without BiDi: 375/1280), and BiDi is loaded by reflection, so the Selenium 4.5.3 compile floor holds. Bug fix: selenium-firefox-driver 4.5.3 is no longer pulled in at compile scope. On 2.2.1 that made new FirefoxDriver() fail on Selenium 4.50.
Responsive captures now target exact viewport widths by default, with an option to disable exact sizing. Viewport settings are restored after capture.
Closed shadow roots can be included in DOM serialization across supported browser protocols. You can disable this behavior with the disableShadowDOM option.
Bug Fixes
Improved detection of the remote browser endpoint across Selenium configurations, helping requests reach the correct server.
Updated Selenium compatibility while retaining support for Java 8.
Selenium 4.50 deprecates HttpCommandExecutor.getAddressOfRemoteServer()
for removal. Read the hub URL from RemoteWebDriver.getClientConfig()
.baseUri() when available and fall back to the old accessor, called
reflectively, then to the remoteServer field, so older Selenium versions
keep working and the SDK keeps loading once the method is removed.
Test against selenium-java 4.50.0, with a JDK 8 profile that keeps the
Java 8 CI job on 4.5.3. Drop the leaked compile-scope
selenium-firefox-driver 4.5.3 (selenium-java already provides it) and add
jsr305 as provided, since Selenium no longer brings javax.annotation.

Responsive DOM capture now supports exact viewport sizing through CDP, BiDi, or window resizing. Percy also exposes closed shadow roots before serialization unless disabled. The build selects Selenium versions by JDK, and DriverMetadata resolves command-executor URLs across Selenium APIs.
Changes: Selenium compatibility and capture
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Selenium and executor URL compatibility pom.xml, src/main/java/io/percy/selenium/DriverMetadata.java, src/test/java/io/percy/selenium/CacheTest.java
The build uses Selenium 4.50.0 by default and 4.5.3 on JDK 8. DriverMetadata prefers the client-config base URI, then resolves the executor URL through reflective method or field lookup. Tests cover these paths and failures.
BrowserSupport selects CDP or BiDi based on browser and session capabilities. Remote Edge first tries its Microsoft CDP endpoint and can fall back to the Google endpoint.
DOM serialization exposes closed roots through CDP, BiDi, or classic WebDriver. The disableShadowDOM option prevents exposure. Tests cover nested roots, fallback paths, and traversal limits.
Responsive capture defaults to exact sizing and allows configuration to disable it. Percy tries CDP, then BiDi, then window resizing; it checks window.innerWidth and restores the viewport. Tests now simulate measured inner-width changes.
Some executor-backed sessions may report the wrong hub URL, and a capture can miss its requested exact width. These cases warrant owner awareness or follow-up, but the established risk is bounded.

For **Selenium 4.50.0**, the tagged Java source shows:
- `RemoteWebDriver.getClientConfig()` is a public getter returning the driver’s `clientConfig`. The config is set by the constructor; constructors without an explicit config use `ClientConfig.defaultConfig()`. ([github.com](https://github.com/SeleniumHQ/selenium/blob/selenium-4.50.0/java/src/org/openqa/selenium/remote/RemoteWebDriver.java))
- `CommandExecutor` is a functional interface with one method: `execute(Command)`, which returns a `Response` and may throw `IOException`. ([github.com](https://github.com/SeleniumHQ/selenium/blob/selenium-4.50.0/java/src/org/openqa/selenium/remote/CommandExecutor.java))
- `DriverCommandExecutor` extends `HttpCommandExecutor`. Its constructors accept a `ClientConfig`; it adjusts the config’s base URI to the `DriverService` URL before passing it to the superclass. ([github.com](https://github.com/SeleniumHQ/selenium/blob/selenium-4.50.0/java/src/org/openqa/selenium/remote/service/DriverCommandExecutor.java))

Use the executor URL when a supplied client configuration differs.
RemoteWebDriver(CommandExecutor, Capabilities, ClientConfig) stores the supplied ClientConfig independently of the executor. A caller can provide a config URI that differs from the HttpCommandExecutor destination. This code caches the config URI and can give Percy a hub URL that receives no commands.
The same mismatch is possible for local drivers with an explicit ClientConfig. ChromeDriver passes the original config to RemoteWebDriver, while DriverCommandExecutor separately rewrites its own config to the DriverService URL. Default local configs have a null base URI and use the existing executor fallback, but a non-null custom URI can be wrong.

[Low] Look up getClientConfig on RemoteWebDriver.class
On a non-public, anonymous or proxy driver class, invoke can throw IllegalAccessException. The exception is swallowed and the code silently falls back to the deprecated path.
The hub URL now comes from RemoteWebDriver.getClientConfig().baseUri(), looked up reflectively. If that fails, the code calls getAddressOfRemoteServer() reflectively, and as a last resort reads the private remoteServer field. The PR also:
bumps Selenium to 4.50.0, with a JDK 1.8 profile pinned to 4.5.3;
swaps selenium-firefox-driver for jsr305 (provided scope).

Findings
M1. The hub-URL fallback can still throw out of getCommandExecutorUrl()
Issue: Line 71 sits outside the method's only try/catch, and its caller (Percy.java:511, confirmed) does not catch either. Three exceptions can reach the user's test:
IllegalStateException from the helpers;
an unwrapped IllegalArgumentException when invoke or get runs on a non-HttpCommandExecutor;
an NPE when remoteServer is null.
The old code threw ClassCastException in the same cases, so this is not a regression. It is still an opportunity to honour the SDK's "warn + continue" rule.
Suggestion: Wrap line 71 the same way the TracedCommandExecutor branch is wrapped (Percy.log(e.toString()); return e.toString();). Or have the helpers also catch IllegalArgumentException.
M2. The published POM no longer brings in selenium-firefox-driver
File:pom.xml (removed dependency block, near line 56)
Issue: The compile-scope selenium-firefox-driver:4.5.3 used to reach consumers transitively. Anyone who relied on that by accident will see a change, though it also removes Selenium version conflicts for everyone else.
Suggestion: Call the removal out in the PR description and the next release notes.
L1. getClientConfig is looked up on the driver's runtime class
Issue: On a non-public, anonymous or proxy driver class, invoke can throw IllegalAccessException. The exception is swallowed and the code silently takes the deprecated path.
Suggestion: Use RemoteWebDriver.class.getMethod("getClientConfig").
L2. getClientConfigBaseUri swallows every exception without logging
The test at :205 asserts RuntimeException, which hides the unwrapped IllegalArgumentException.
The getCause().getCause() assertion at :201 depends on the exact exception-wrapping depth.
Suggestion: Assert the precise exception types.
Note: CI coverage of the new path.release.yml builds on Java 8, which compiles against Selenium 4.5.3. The two ClientConfig tests skip on that leg, so only the JDK 11+ CI legs exercise the new primary path. No change is needed.
Docs coverage: stack-percy-docs-reviewer found the change non-architectural (N/A) and opened no KB PR.
Verdict: PASS — no High or Critical findings. M1 (log and continue at line 71) and M2 (a release-note entry) are recommended before merge.
…rowser
Responsive capture now sets an exact viewport instead of resizing the window:
Chromium via CDP (HasCdp, or Augmenter on remote sessions such as Grid and
Automate), then BiDi browsingContext.setViewport when the session already has
webSocketUrl (reached reflectively, so the Selenium 4.5.3 floor still loads),
then a window resize corrected once by the measured browser border. Restore
clears the emulation instead of re-applying it at the window size, which used
to leave the viewport frozen. exactResponsiveWidth (per snapshot, then
.percy.yml) set to false keeps the previous mechanism.
ClosedShadowRoots.expose runs before every serialize (unless disableShadowDOM)
and fills window.__percyClosedShadowRoots via CDP, BiDi script.callFunction
(includeShadowTree: all), or WebDriver Get Element Shadow Root on local
sessions (capped by PERCY_CLOSED_SHADOW_MAX_HOSTS, opt in on remote with
PERCY_CLOSED_SHADOW_CLASSIC=true).

PPLT-6242: Resolve hub URL without deprecated getAddressOfRemoteServer
PPLT-6242: Resolve hub URL; exact responsive widths and closed shadow roots
Oct 27, 2026
The Augmenter's HasCdp always posts to goog/cdp/execute: selenium-chrome
and selenium-edge register the same executeCdpCommand name and goog wins.
msedgedriver rejects goog, so on remote Edge (e.g. BrowserStack Automate)
exact widths fell to BiDi or the window path and closed shadow roots fell
to BiDi or classic. Remote Edge now registers its own ms/cdp/execute
command on the session's HttpCommandExecutor, keeping the augmented goog
command as a fallback for hubs that only proxy goog.
Also says in the debug log that a failed CDP/BiDi closed-shadow-root
strategy moves on to the next one, and covers that fall-through
(CDP failure -> BiDi, and -> classic gating without BiDi) in tests.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Exact mode can skip the viewport change and capture at the wrong width.
The guard at Line 1204 compares the requested width with lastWindowWidth. lastWindowWidth starts as the outer window width from driver.manage().window().getSize(). In exact mode setViewport targets window.innerWidth. The two widths differ by the browser border or frame.
Trigger: the requested width equals the current outer width, for example a 1280 width on a 1280px-wide Edge or Chrome window. The guard skips setViewport. The snapshot is then taken at an inner width such as 1272 and is recorded as width: 1280. Exact mode exists to prevent this mismatch.
In exact mode, compare against the measured inner width. Keep the old comparison when exact is false. The proposed condition still lets SdkTest.captureResponsiveDomSkipsResizeWhenDimensionsUnchanged pass, because that test mocks innerWidth as 1024.

Problem
Selenium 4.50 marks
HttpCommandExecutor.getAddressOfRemoteServer()for removal (forRemoval=true).DriverMetadatacalls it directly to find the hub URL, so it warns now and will throwNoSuchMethodErroronce Selenium drops the method. Selenium 4.50 and 4.51 have no replacement onHttpCommandExecutor. The non-deprecated source isRemoteWebDriver.getClientConfig().baseUri(), which is in 4.50 but not in 4.5.3, 4.10 or 4.36.Fix
DriverMetadataresolves the hub URL in this order, all reflectively, so one jar works from Selenium 4.5.3 to 4.50+:RemoteWebDriver.getClientConfig().baseUri()TracedCommandExecutorunwrap, thengetAddressOfRemoteServer()remoteServerfield (present in both 4.5.3 and 4.50)pom:

Compile target stays 1.8.selenium-firefox-driver4.5.3;selenium-javaalready provides it. This changes the published dependency list.com.google.code.findbugs:jsr3053.0.2 asprovided, becausejavax.annotation.Nullableno longer comes through Selenium 4.50.Testing

S1, exact responsive width (pre-existing). Responsive capture resized the window, so Edge's border and the OS minimum window width (500 px on macOS, 516 px outer on Windows) produced 492/1272 on Edge and 500 on Firefox. Mobile media queries never applied.
setDeviceMetricsOverrideon any Chromium browser, including Edge and remote sessions.browsingContext.setViewportwhen the session haswebSocketUrl: true.snapshot.exactResponsiveWidth: false(PPLT-6233: Export CYPRESS_PERCY_SERVER_ADDRESS and add snapshot.exactResponsiveWidth cli#2466).S2, closed shadow roots (partial). Closed roots are now exposed before serialize via CDP, then BiDi (

On a remote grid it took ~16 min, so remote sessions skip it unlessPERCY_CLOSED_SHADOW_CLASSIC=true.nullfor closed roots, so they are skipped there.Baselines shift once for: Edge, Firefox with BiDi, remote Chromium, and pages with closed shadow roots.

Augmenter→HasCdp; remote Edge posts toms/cdp/execute, because the Augmenter always targetsgoog/cdp/execute, which msedgedriver rejects (verified on Automate Edge/Win11 without BiDi: 375/1280), and BiDi is loaded by reflection, so the Selenium 4.5.3 compile floor holds. Bug fix:selenium-firefox-driver4.5.3 is no longer pulled in at compile scope. On 2.2.1 that madenew FirefoxDriver()fail on Selenium 4.50.Results (375 / 1280): Edge 492/1272 → 375/1280; remote Chrome 500/1280 → 375/1280 (Augmenter); Firefox + BiDi 375/1280; Firefox without BiDi 500/1280 + warning. S2 ✓ on Chrome, Edge, remote Chrome and Firefox ± BiDi (was ✗ everywhere).
Build: 54956527.
Testing: 146 tests on Selenium 4.50 and 4.5.3; CI green on Java 8, 11, 17 and 21.
