Slice 05 (OPR.0.7.0.5), part 2 of 2. Part 1, #1195 (the behaviour-neutral pieces), is merged as bdc19878. First increment: the reusable in-place restart primitive, its command, its per-seat report,
and isolated harness tests. It's built from S05-DESIGN-1, with Root's amendments of 2026-10-12 (scratch-s05-amend-1)
applied where they differ.

What it does

rig seat restart <seat> --keep-conversation --reason … restarts one Codex seat so that it reads whatever
account its Codex home holds now. It keeps:

  • the same conversation, resumed by its stored id;
  • the same pane;
  • the settings the running Codex is using.

It never switches an account (rig auth switch stays a separate, owner-run step). It never reads credentials,
launches fresh, forks, re-delivers startup context, or retries.

  • --plan runs every check read-only.
  • --verify [--expect-account <text>] checks uptake after a real turn.

Refused before any signal (each refusal names what it checked):

  • the seat's existing refusals: missing reason, unknown seat, adopted (claimed) session, typing guard on, absent
    session, tmux unreadable;
  • not_codex;
  • pane_unverified: the session must have exactly the seat's bound pane;
  • resume_binding_unverified: the running Codex must be proven to be on the stored conversation, by its argv
    (resume <id>) or, for a fresh-launched Codex, by its own native logs;
  • pane_shape_unknown;
  • settings_unverified (cwd or home not readable);
  • settings_drift: the relaunch command's effective model, profile, sandbox, approval, bypass and -c overrides
    (including effort), cwd and Codex home must equal the running Codex's. So a pending set-model or set-effort
    can't ride along. Saved choices are shown, not applied. Effort comes from node.effort, as today;
  • restart_in_progress: an earlier restart has no recorded result, or another restart of the seat ran while this
    request waited for the lifecycle lease. A slow reply can't cause a second restart;
  • tmux_probe_failed when a direct-native pane's remain-on-exit can't be read, because it then couldn't be put
    back.

Reported, never refused (per Root):

  • mid-turn or needs-input activity (working / needs_input / idle / unknown);
  • child processes of the Codex process (names and pids, never argv);
  • the billing route. It's always unknown: API-key variable names are listed, but a name alone doesn't establish
    billing;
  • peers in the same Codex home. They're reported as "Not restarted; account unverified …", and never touched.

Restart:

  • Shell-backed pane: TERM goes to the Codex chain's top process, not the shell, with a bounded KILL fallback. The
    original must be gone and the shell back in the foreground. Then the adapter's existing resume launch runs
    (launchHarness with resumeToken).
  • Direct-native pane: the existing in-place cutover runs:
    1. remain-on-exit on, then TERM, then KILL;
    2. respawn-pane without -k, with the exact resume command as the pane's command;
    3. the adapter's resume verification.
  • Then: pane identity is re-verified (rebindAndVerifyPaneIdentity, exact resume lineage).
  • remain-on-exit: restored to its previous pane-local value only after the replacement is verified live.
    On any failure it stays on, and the reply records it (paneHeld).
  • Results: restarted_account_unverified, not_started (the original is still running), incomplete (it
    exited, the resume wasn't proven, with remainingStep and the exact recoveryCommand), or native_unknown (with
    couldNotSee).
  • Events: seat.restart_in_place_started is persisted before the first signal, and
    seat.restart_in_place_finished records the result.

--verify: returns moved only when both of these hold:

  • a completed tool call (response_item *_call_output), newer than the restart, is in the conversation's rollout,
    with no error event since; it reads only event kinds and times, never content;
  • Codex's /status Account line on the pane names the --expect-account value. A plan-only status line, or no
    --expect-account, keeps the result restarted_account_unverified.

Nothing is typed into the seat. The operator agent drives the real turn and /status.

Artery: launch and resume

This touches the launch/resume artery. It needs Build's re-review.

File Change
(part 1, #1195) daemon/src/adapters/codex-runtime-adapter.ts launchHarness's flag preparation moved into prepareLaunch / resumeCore / seatCommand, with no behaviour change. New buildResumeCommand (builds without sending) and verifyResumeInPane (the existing verifyResumeLaunch).
(part 1) daemon/src/domain/successor-session-launcher.ts terminateRetiree / waitPaneDead moved to pane-cutover.ts, with no behaviour change. Handover's remain-on-exit handling is unchanged (left out, as dev60 directed).
(part 1) daemon/src/adapters/tmux.ts New getPaneLocalOption, restorePaneOption, signalPid.
(part 1) daemon/src/domain/native-process-lineage.ts Exports processArgv and codexCommandResumeToken, the existing parsers.
daemon/src/domain/seat-restart-in-place.ts (new) The primitive.
daemon/src/domain/seat-lifecycle-service.ts restartInPlace, verifyRestartInPlace and the shared seat refusals. Posture is derived exactly as handover derives it.
daemon/src/routes/seat.ts /api/seat/restart, /restart-plan, /restart-verify.
CLI rig seat restart.

launchFresh and restore-orchestrator.ts are untouched. The adapter split, the cutover extraction and the tmux
helpers overlap #1163, #1158 and #1072; whichever lands second rebases.

Proof

All on ovh08, on main fec7772d, with TMUX unset. The table is dev-build's run at the unsplit commit b38ede5e. This PR's head has the same tree, apart from the dropped doc row. Re-run at this head after the split: lint passes, the new daemon tests pass 28/28 and the CLI verb tests pass 32/32.

Run Result
npm ci (npm 10) rc 0; package-lock.json unchanged
Root npm run lint (daemon build plus tsc for daemon, ui, cli and tui) rc 0
npm run build -w @openrig/cli rc 0
New unit tests, seat-restart-in-place.test.ts (every gate and outcome, through SeatLifecycleService) 23/23
New route tests, seat-restart-in-place-route.test.ts 3/3
New native harness, seat-restart-in-place-native.test.ts (both pane shapes) 2/2
CLI seat-lifecycle-verbs.test.ts (with 7 new restart cases) 32/32
Existing Codex adapter and handover suites, after the extractions 197 passed, 1 skipped
Full CLI suite 4215 passed, 3 skipped
Full daemon suite 14870 passed, 8 failed, 5 skipped

The native harness exercises the production pieces together:

  • a real tmux server on a private -L socket;
  • a compiled stub codex;
  • the real CodexRuntimeAdapter;
  • the production route factory, with its default ps and /proc readers.

The activity shown in the result came from the app's seatActivityService, which shows that factory wiring works,
not only injected doubles.

Shell-backed Direct-native
Pane Same pane and same shell pid Same pane id, respawned without -k
Running afterwards Only the replacement stub, on the same conversation Only the replacement stub, on the same conversation
The original's output Still in the pane Still in scrollback (tmux resets the visible screen on respawn)
remain-on-exit Never touched Pane-local value back to unset after the verified replacement
Other --verify stays restarted_account_unverified with no expected account

The 8 full-suite daemon failures, none from this change:

  • 2 in stub-cli-journeys.integration.test.ts: a rig send timeout (5 s) under full-suite load. The file passes
    4/4 when run on its own.
  • 6 are environmental on this box, and the same tests fail on a checkout of main fec7772d:
    • 3 in seat-launch-environment-regression.test.ts ("C: … separate Node interpreter"): the distro Node is in
      /usr/bin;
    • 2 in claude-relay-project-cleanup.test.ts: umask 002 gives mode 0775 where 0755 is expected;
    • 1 in terminal-pipe-utf8.test.ts: a known timing failure.

Not run: CI, npm run test:repo (its doc-guard, context-pack and skill-mirror checks were run separately and
pass), the UI and TUI suites, and any real Codex.

Harness incident (reported at the time): the first native run let the pane's login shell profile put the
real installed Codex ahead of the stub on PATH, so the real Codex started twice.

  • What it touched: only the test's empty temporary CODEX_HOME. It stopped at its sign-in screen, and it ran
    its own git ls-remote to github.com/openai/plugins.
  • What it didn't touch: no real Codex home, auth file or account; nothing was signed in.
  • Cleanup: its processes ended with the test's private tmux sessions.
  • The fix, in the committed harness:
    • every pane process starts non-login from env -i with an explicit PATH, HOME and CODEX_HOME;
    • CODEX_HOME is the temp dir and asserted not to be ~/.codex;
    • launches go through the adapter's pinned launch PATH;
    • a check inside the pane fails closed (prints PREFLIGHT-REFUSED, starts nothing) unless codex resolves to
      the stub and CODEX_HOME is the temp dir;
    • stub processes are found by /proc/<pid>/exe, never by command text.

NOT VERIFIED

  • Real Codex: no native run has used it yet; T4 runs it on ovh08's own disposable Codex seats, and any missing sign-in is named to Fleet. In particular:
    • whether Codex saves its rollout before exiting on TERM, and what a KILL after the timeout loses. TERM/KILL
      timing proves neither, and nothing here claims the original's history is kept beyond tmux scrollback;
    • an incomplete restart's recovery, using the printed recoveryCommand, on a real conversation;
    • the shapes of Codex 0.160.x screens and records this relies on: the resumed TUI, the sign-in text, the /status
      Account line, the rollout *_call_output and error event kinds, and threads.rollout_path.
  • Account evidence: whether /status names an email or only a plan on 0.160.1. Screen text is weak evidence:
    any text on the pane that reads "Account: " would match.
  • Credential backend: which backend is in effect. The reply reads cli_auth_credentials_store from
    config.toml only; administrator requirements are not read.
  • Billing route: not observable without reading credentials, so it's always reported unknown.
  • Child processes: they're stopped with Codex. Ordinary MCP servers will be listed too, and the operator judges
    them.
  • macOS: cwd, home and executable are read from /proc, so on macOS the restart refuses with
    settings_unverified.
  • Multi-pane seats: a seat with more than one pane (for example, a link-window hook, fix(daemon): keep the launching session's identity out of seats #771) is refused as
    pane_unverified.

Round 1 (review): dev60-review's F1, LOW-1 and LOW-2

Rebased onto main bdc19878. The round's commit is fix(seat): record every in-place restart result; reuse the running launch choices. After the rebase, at this head: lint passes; the restart, tmux-adapter, Codex adapter and handover suites pass 380, with 1 skipped; and the CLI verb tests pass 34/34.

Changed in what it does

Every exit after started records finished.

  • The restart after the started event runs under a catch. A throw at any stage (stop, respawn, resume, identity
    check, restoring remain-on-exit) finishes as native_unknown, with the stage and error in couldNotSee. The
    pane-held state is recorded too.
  • The pane's line position is recorded with a verified restart's result (paneLine).

A started with no result:

When it started What happens
Under the running daemon Still in flight: --plan and execute refuse with restart_in_progress.
Before the running daemon started Can't still be running. --plan and execute report it as staleRestart (start time, old pid, pane) and go ahead.

The daemon's start time is its own process start, from process.uptime(). --plan also shows the latest recorded
result as lastRestart.

CLI timeout guidance now says what works: --plan refuses with restart_in_progress while the restart is still
running, then shows its result as lastRestart.

LOW-1 (chosen: take the choices from the running Codex):

  • The relaunch reuses three things from the running Codex's own argv: the network override
    (-c sandbox_workspace_write.network_access=true), --no-daemon, and the --add-dir list. So the restart keeps
    these effective settings, and a reader that times out now but didn't at launch can't cause a settings_drift.
  • buildResumeCommand takes them as running and skips Codex's network reader, the daemon-support probe, the
    profile preflight and the team-workspace preparation.
  • --plan therefore starts no Codex process. Its help no longer says "read-only". It says what the preview does:
    it stops and restarts nothing, and building the command can create OpenRig's own seat-bin link, as every managed
    launch does.
  • Side effect to note: a fresh-launched Codex's git --add-dir entries are carried into its resume. Ordinary
    resumes never add them.

LOW-2: --verify reads only what the pane printed after the restart's recorded line position, using two new
tmux helpers, getPaneLinePosition and capturePaneFrom. An Account: line from before the restart is not
evidence. If tmux history is full, positions shift; that position is then reported as unknown (not_observed).

Added to NOT VERIFIED

  • Peer reporting cost: peers() runs one ps per Codex node, across all rigs, on every --plan and every
    restart (about 28 on the reviewer's daemon). It's disclosed, not changed.
  • Restart point at full history: if the pane's tmux history is full when --verify runs, the restart point
    can't be located. Account evidence is then not_observed, never a guess.
  • macOS /proc (already listed): unchanged.

Removed from NOT VERIFIED

"A daemon crash mid-restart leaves a started event with no result, and later restarts of that seat then refuse with
restart_in_progress. There's no override yet." That case is now reported as staleRestart and doesn't block.

Proof for this round

All on ovh08 at e879f89d, with TMUX unset.

Run Result
Root npm run lint rc 0
CLI build rc 0
New and changed restart tests, daemon (unit, route, native) 42/42 (were 28)
New and changed restart tests, CLI verb file 34/34 (were 32)
Full CLI suite 4217 passed, 3 skipped
Full daemon suite 14886 passed, 8 failed

The new unit tests cover:

  • a throw at every stage of both pane shapes, each recording finished as native_unknown with the right
    pane-held state, after which the seat can be previewed again;
  • a stale started (from before the daemon started) reported in both --plan and execute, without blocking;
  • a started under this daemon still refusing;
  • --plan showing lastRestart;
  • the running argv's network override, --no-daemon and add-dirs passed to the relaunch;
  • the production adapter building from them with no probe called (daemon support, network, profile, team
    workspace);
  • an old Account: line above the restart not counting, while a new one after it does.

The CLI tests cover printing staleRestart and lastRestart, and the timeout guidance.

The 8 daemon failures are the same 8 as last round, none from this change:

  • 2 in stub-cli-journeys: send timeouts under full-suite load (4/4 when the file runs alone);
  • 6 environmental and identical on main: the distro Node in /usr/bin (3), umask 002 (2), and terminal-pipe-utf8
    timing (1).

Native harness: unchanged and still 2/2. No tmux servers, sockets or stub processes remain.

CodeRabbit on the round-1 head

  • Fixed: --expect-account was a substring match, so Account: jimbob@corp.com counted for bob@corp.com. It now needs the whole value (case-insensitive). Tests: bob@corp.com doesn't match jimbob@corp.com, bob@corp.com.au or bob@corpXcom.
  • Fixed: --verify exited 0 on restarted_account_unverified. Only moved exits 0 now, with and without --json.
  • Already handled in round 1: two comments left over from the pre-round head, a missing finished after a throw (F1) and --plan preparing the team workspace (LOW-1: --plan now takes the running Codex's choices and prepares nothing).

At this head: lint passes; the restart unit tests pass 38/38, and the CLI verb tests pass 35/35.

Round 2 (review-r2's measured findings): F1, F2, F3

The round's commit is fix(seat): keep running settings on a shell restart; hold the pane before signalling; count only new Account lines, on 6da0d061. Where this section and earlier ones differ, this section is current. It adds no new refusal code, and pane-cutover.ts is unchanged. Re-run by orch-lead at this head: lint passes; the restart, native, tmux-adapter, Codex adapter and handover suites pass 392 with 1 skipped; and the CLI verb tests pass 36/36.

Restart (F1, F2)

Shell-backed pane (F1).

  • Old text: "Then the adapter's existing resume launch runs (launchHarness with resumeToken)."
  • New text: "Then the exact resume command the checks ran on is typed into the shell, and the adapter's resume
    verification runs (sendResumeCommand). Nothing is prepared again after Codex stops, so the replacement keeps
    the running Codex's --no-daemon, network override and --add-dir list, as the direct-native branch does."
  • launchHarness is untouched, so ordinary fresh, resume and fork launches don't change.

Direct-native pane (F2). The hold now comes before any signal:

  1. Set remain-on-exit on, then read it back. The hold counts only when tmux reads it back as on.
  2. If the hold can't be established: nothing is signalled. The result is not_started ("the original Codex
    was not signalled and is still running"), with no paneHeld. If the option was changed, it's put back.
  3. TERM, then KILL, through the shared terminatePaneInPlace, unchanged. Its own remain-on-exit write is now a
    repeat of a confirmed hold.
  4. respawn-pane without -k, then the resume verification, as before.

If the stop or the respawn fails, the result reports what is observed: the pane (present / gone /
unknown, from tmux's pane list) and the original process (running / exited / unknown, by pid and start
time). It's in a new report field, observedAfterStop, which the CLI prints.

Observed Outcome
Original running, pane present not_started, pane still held
Original exited, pane gone incomplete: "its pane is gone; nothing was resumed". Remaining step: resume in a new pane with the recovery command. No paneHeld.
Original exited, pane present incomplete
Anything unknown native_unknown, naming what was seen

paneHeld is recorded, in the reply and the finished event, only once the hold is confirmed and while the pane
exists. "Still running" is said only when the process is observed running.

--verify (F3; supersedes round 1's LOW-2 text)

An Account line counts only if it was produced after the restart.

  • Method: when a restart finishes verified, the daemon captures the pane's whole text (history and screen,
    wrapped lines joined) and counts each distinct Account line. The finished event keeps only a 16-hex digest of
    each line and its count, never the account text. --verify captures the pane again. A line is new only when
    the same text now occurs more often than it did at the restart. The newest such line decides matched or
    not_matched.
  • Why this holds: text that stays, moves, or is redrawn in place doesn't raise its count. Lines lost from
    history or overwritten can only lower counts. So a raised count means a line was produced after the restart.
    The cursor position is no longer used: it isn't an append-only boundary.
  • Conservative failure: if the baseline wasn't recorded or the pane can't be read, the evidence is
    not_observed and the outcome stays restarted_account_unverified. A genuine new line can also be missed, for
    example when the old identical line has since dropped out of history so the count doesn't rise. Then the
    operator shows /status again.
  • getPaneLinePosition and capturePaneFrom (added in round 1, never merged) are replaced by one helper,
    capturePaneHistory.

Artery table, updated rows

File Change
daemon/src/adapters/codex-runtime-adapter.ts As before, plus sendResumeCommand: types a built command and runs verifyResumeInPane. No other launch path changes.
daemon/src/adapters/tmux.ts getPaneLocalOption, restorePaneOption, signalPid (in #1195), plus capturePaneHistory.

Added to NOT VERIFIED

  • Redraws by real Codex: whether a real Codex reprints an older /status block after the restart, for example
    on resize or resume replay. That would add a copy and count as new. The stub can't show this. The native Codex
    run should check it.
  • Paths with spaces: the running argv is read from ps command text, which flattens argv on spaces. A running
    Codex with a space in an --add-dir (or any argument before the conversation id) fails closed as
    resume_binding_unverified, before any signal. Seen in this round's harness. Not changed.

Proof for this round

All on ovh08 at e7d1750d2b7fb5eb32a484db91903b452dce0f86, with TMUX unset.

Run Result
Root npm run lint rc 0
CLI build rc 0
Restart unit and route tests, daemon 51/51 (unit 48, route 3; was 45)
Native harness (private -L socket, stub codex) 3/3 (was 2)
CLI verb file 36/36 (one new: the observed state is printed)
Full CLI suite 4228 passed, 3 skipped
Full daemon suite 14936 passed, 8 failed, 5 skipped

New unit tests:

  • F1: a shell-backed restart of a Codex running with --no-daemon, the network override and two --add-dir
    paths types one command containing all three. The command was built once, before anything stopped. The
    production adapter's sendResumeCommand types the given command unchanged and verifies the resume.
  • F2:
    • a hold whose write fails, and one that doesn't read back on: no signal, no respawn, not_started, no
      paneHeld in the reply or the finished event;
    • a pane that vanishes on the signal while tmux doesn't report it dead (review-r2's case): incomplete with
      observedAfterStop {pane: gone, process: exited}, no paneHeld, and no "still running";
    • a Codex that survives TERM and KILL: not_started, observed running, pane held.
  • F3:
    • review-r2's case: an old Account line in the frame, unchanged across the restart, gives not_observed and
      never moved;
    • an old matching line plus a new plan-only line gives not_matched;
    • a missing baseline gives not_observed;
    • the event log holds digests, not account names.

Native harness (LOW):

  • Every pane root is given to tmux as separate argv words (env -i … /bin/sh), so tmux execs it with no outer
    shell. The preflight and env -i isolation are unchanged.

  • The shell-backed test now starts Codex with --no-daemon, the network override and two --add-dir paths.
    It checks the replacement's real /proc/<pid>/cmdline keeps all three.

  • New native F3 test, in a real private tmux:

    • before the restart, Account: me@example.com is written to row 25 and the cursor is moved to row 1;
    • after a real shell-backed restart, the line is still on row 25 and the cursor is above it;
    • --verify --expect-account me@example.com returns restarted_account_unverified with not_observed.

    The round-1 position method would have read from the cursor down and matched that line. That's from reading
    the code; the old method wasn't run.

Handover: pane-cutover.ts and its callers are unchanged, so handover results are unchanged by construction.
No handover suite was rerun separately for this round; the full daemon suite, which includes them, passed them.

The 8 daemon failures are the same 8 as rounds 0 and 1, none from this change:

  • 2 in stub-cli-journeys: send timeouts under full-suite load. 4/4 when the file was rerun alone at this head.
  • 6 environmental and identical on main: the distro Node in /usr/bin (3), umask 002 (2), terminal-pipe-utf8
    timing (1).

seat-lifecycle-service.ts gained one condition after the full run (the adapter check now also requires
sendResumeCommand). It typechecks, and the restart unit, route and native files were rerun after it: 54/54.
No tmux servers, sockets or stub processes remain.

Pending decisions

  • The first journey (Codex on a shared home) is still with the founder (S05-DESIGN-1 §7a). This primitive is
    built to be reusable either way.
  • Mid-turn: Root's disposition replaced the brief's default refusal and --interrupt-turn. Activity is shown,
    and the operator chooses.
  • Effort: the shared effort resolver is slice 07's (orch-lead). This uses node.effort until then.

Split

This is part 2. Part 1, #1195 (the adapter build/send split, the cutover extraction, the tmux helpers and the parser exports, with no behaviour change), merged as bdc19878. This branch is rebased onto it, so the diff is only the restart. The docs/as-built/cli-reference.md row was left out because that inventory is checked against a named commit.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added commands to plan, perform, and verify an in-place Codex seat restart while preserving the existing conversation and pane.
    • Read-only plans show checks and potential impacts before execution. Restarting requires a reason and may be refused if safety checks fail.
    • Verification reports post-restart conversation activity and available account evidence. A restart alone does not confirm account identity or billing route.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Timed-out restart requests now report an unknown outcome and advise checking the operation before retrying.

The implementation handles both pane shapes, records outcomes, and checks replacement identity. Verification checks post-restart tool activity and account evidence. Tests cover execution, failure handling, and verification.
HTTP routes and native integration
packages/daemon/src/routes/seat.ts, packages/daemon/test/seat-restart-in-place-route.test.ts, packages/daemon/test/seat-restart-in-place-native.test.ts
Three routes expose restart planning, execution, and verification. Route tests check refusals and missing adapters. Linux-native tests exercise shell-backed and direct-native panes.
CLI restart commands
packages/cli/src/commands/seat.ts, packages/cli/test/seat-lifecycle-verbs.test.ts
The CLI adds plan, execution, and verification modes with option validation, timeout handling, exit statuses, and restart reports. Tests check requests, output, and outcomes.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to e7d17

Most failures during an in-place restart are now recorded and no longer block the seat. In the rare case that saving the final restart record itself fails, the seat could still refuse later restart, plan, and verify calls until the state is cleared. This is worth a small follow-up and does not block merge.

Keep --plan read-only.

--plan calls CodexInPlaceRestart.plan(), which calls observe() and buildResumeCommand(). buildResumeCommand() calls prepareLaunch(). For a workspace-write launch without a profile, prepareLaunch() invokes prepareTeamWorkspace, which can create missing directories with fs.mkdirSync(root, { recursive: true }).

Use a non-mutating preparation path when building the plan. Do not call prepareCodexTeamWorkspace from --plan.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Record a finished event when an exception interrupts execute.

execute writes seat.restart_in_place_started before it sends any signal. It writes seat.restart_in_place_finished only through finish(...) on the normal return paths. Several awaited calls can throw between those two writes:

  • codex.launchHarness
  • tmux.respawnPane
  • verifyResumeInPane
  • rebindAndVerifyPaneIdentity
  • io.readProcess
  • persist, if the database write fails

When one of these throws, the newest event stays started. From then on, pendingRestart returns restart_in_progress for every --plan, execute, and --verify call. No command clears that state. The refusal message tells the operator to inspect rig seat status, but nothing there unblocks the seat. The CLI timeout guidance points to --plan, which then refuses as well.

An in-process exception is an observed failure, not an unknown daemon crash. Catch it after the started write and finish with native_unknown. Also consider an audited operator path to resolve a started event left by a real daemon crash.

Proposed fix
     const recoveryCommand = relaunch.core;
-
- // 1. Stop the running Codex in place.
-    let launch: HarnessLaunchResult;
+    try {
+      return await this.runRestart(target, observed, finish, recoveryCommand);
+    } catch (error) {
+      return finish({ ...report, outcome: "native_unknown", recoveryCommand,
+ couldNotSee: [`what happened after the restart started: ${(error as Error).message}`],
+        message: "The restart failed with an internal error after it started; inspect the pane before resuming by hand." });
+    }
+  }

Move the current steps 1–2b into a runRestart helper. Its behavior stays the same.

rig seat restart <seat> --keep-conversation restarts one Codex seat so it
reads the account its Codex home holds now: the same conversation, resumed
in the same pane, with the settings the running Codex uses. It never
switches an account, reads credentials, launches fresh, forks or retries.

Before any signal it refuses unproven identity (pane, conversation, pane
shape), effective-settings drift (so a pending set-model or set-effort
cannot ride along), unreadable cwd/home, and a restart that is already in
progress or ran while the request waited. Activity, child processes,
billing route and peers sharing the home are reported, not refused.
Shell-backed panes stop Codex under the shell and use the adapter's resume
launch; direct-native panes use the in-place cutover and respawn without
-k, restoring remain-on-exit only after a verified live replacement.
Results: restarted_account_unverified, not_started, incomplete or
native_unknown. --verify reports moved only with a completed tool turn
since the restart and the expected account on Codex's status line.

Behaviour-neutral extractions: the Codex adapter's launch preparation
(new buildResumeCommand / verifyResumeInPane) and the handover's in-place
termination (pane-cutover.ts). New tmux helpers: getPaneLocalOption,
restorePaneOption, signalPid.

…unch choices

Review round 1 on #1196.

Every exit after the started event now records a finished event: the
restart runs under a catch, and a throw at any stage finishes as
native_unknown with the stage and error and any held pane recorded. A
started event older than this daemon's own start can't still be running,
so --plan and execute report it as staleRestart instead of refusing; one
under this daemon still refuses as restart_in_progress. --plan shows the
latest result as lastRestart, and the CLI timeout guidance says so.

The relaunch takes the network override, --no-daemon and add-dirs from the
running Codex's argv (buildResumeCommand's new `running` input), so it keeps
them and --plan starts no Codex probe; the help says what --plan does.

--verify reads only what the pane printed after the restart's recorded
line position (new tmux getPaneLinePosition / capturePaneFrom), so an
Account line from before the restart is not evidence.

…unless moved

CodeRabbit on #1196:
- The account check used a substring match, so 'Account: jimbob@corp.com'
  counted as evidence for --expect-account bob@corp.com. It now needs the
  expected value with a boundary on each side (case-insensitive).
- --verify answered 200 with outcome restarted_account_unverified and the
  CLI exited 0. Only 'moved' exits 0 now, as only a verified replacement
  does for the restart itself.

…fore signalling; count only new Account lines

#1196 round 2 (review-r2's measured F1-F3):
- F1: the shell-backed branch types the exact resume command built from the
  running Codex's choices (new adapter sendResumeCommand) instead of preparing
  the launch again after Codex stops. launchHarness is unchanged.
- F2: a direct-native pane's remain-on-exit hold is set and read back before
  any signal; a hold that can't be established signals nothing and ends
  not_started. After a failed stop or respawn the reply reports the observed
  pane and process state (observedAfterStop); paneHeld only once the hold is
  confirmed and the pane exists. pane-cutover.ts is unchanged.
- F3: account evidence counts only an Account line whose occurrences rose since
  the restart (digest counts of the pane's whole text, recorded at finish).
  Replaces the cursor-position boundary.
- Native fixtures pass explicit argv roots to tmux; new native F1 argv check
  and F3 reproduction.

Approved at e7d1750. rig seat restart <seat> --keep-conversation restarts a Codex seat in place, in the same pane and conversation, so it starts on its Codex home's current account. Before stopping anything it proves which conversation is running, and --plan reports what would happen without stopping or launching. The restart keeps the running settings exactly, sets and reads back the pane hold before any signal (a failed hold signals nothing and reports not_started), reports only the pane and process state it observed after a failed stop, and leaves other seats sharing the Codex home untouched. --verify reports moved only when an Account line printed after the restart matches the expected account and a tool turn has completed; otherwise it reports restarted_account_unverified. Fresh, resume and fork launches compose exactly as before. Required CI passed at this head.

…ough its staged script

OPR.0.7.0.5. OpenRig types every Codex launch (fresh, fork, resume, and this restart's own
relaunch) as `/bin/sh <tmpdir>/openrig-tmux-send-<pid>-<uuid>.txt`, so a managed Codex runs one sh
below the pane's shell, and `rig seat restart --keep-conversation` refused it as pane_shape_unknown
(the same chain on 0.6.10). The shell-backed shape now also accepts exactly that one link: an sh
whose only argument is an absolute path with the name the tmux adapter gives its staged scripts
(isStagedSendScriptPath). Any other process between the shell and Codex is still refused.

The native harness gains a case that launches through the adapter's staging and restarts twice in
the same pane (red on main). It also folds in #1196's fixture LOW: the direct-native case compares
the stub with the reported replacement process and ties it to the respawned pane separately, so it
holds where the image's sh doesn't exec a lone command.

The keeping-a-watch limitation now states the cause the right way round: a held-back (retained) one-shot wake is recorded as the timer's one fire and later wakes aren't, so the timer isn't retired. OPENRIG_REFOCUS_WORK_PACKET shipped in 0.6.10, so #1066 is described as a change to it, not a new switch. #1182 is a macOS test fix, #1131 refuses only a value that can't become a number, and #1148 fixed tests that failed on some Linux machines. #1085's line states that --verify can wait its full 30-second default when Slack isn't set up. #1142, #1196's --verify and #1153's ~ expansion are stated exactly. Text only.

…lace restart (#1361)

A Codex in-place restart could report `native_unknown` when its resume screen was ready before the native process was visible. The restart now checks the existing strict identity and secondary observations immediately, then resamples within the existing finite timing budget.

- Defaults allow 31 evaluations and 30 yields of 100 ms, through the class's injected timing. It's not a hard three-second deadline: each attempt's process and tmux reads add time, so a restart that never verifies takes a few seconds longer than before.
- Each successful strict attempt still needs two fresh matching process observations and the existing secondary condition from the same attempt; an earlier negative observation never counts as proof.
- Only observation repeats: signals, launch preparation, the resume send and the respawn run once, exceptions keep their finalization, and the direct-native pane hold is restored only after final proof. Shared identity APIs and the secondary's cached-array behaviour are unchanged.
- Each attempt keeps its existing binding and verdict write, so during the window a seat can briefly show attention (and be skipped by workflow role selection) before the final result replaces it.
- Exhaustion remains `native_unknown`; success remains `restarted_account_unverified`, never account verification.

Tests: 19 new cases in `seat-restart-in-place.test.ts` (both restart shapes, delayed and invalid evidence, sample drift, pane joins, secondary failure, verdict writes, one launch and final event, held-pane restoration).

The 0.6.11 cut of #1361 (main e81e261): verifyReplacement evaluates the existing strict rebind and secondary observation at once, then resamples within the class's existing timing (31 evaluations, 30 yields of 100 ms by default). Each success needs its own two fresh native observations; only observation repeats; exhaustion stays native_unknown and success restarted_account_unverified. Refs #1196.

…pane label (#1398)

Say which lineage check failed, printing only what the check can vouch for.

- A failed lineage check names the check that failed (for example the recorded against the launched conversation) instead of the pane's foreground label.
- Printed values are only the seat's own record (its first eight characters), the pane id and the foreground command, with control characters replaced by ?. A conversation read from a launch's arguments is described, not printed.
- A process that only names a Claude executable is described as found and unverified, and the Codex launcher chain is described by what was read.
- Every check's accept/refuse result, the equality and rotation checks, and the codes are unchanged; the launch identity check keeps its explanation in the caller's message.
- Refs #1196.
