Apply destination conflict protection during setCwd.
readStartupContext rebuilds every persisted projection entry with classification: "safe_projection" and returns conflicts: []. It does not classify the supplied cwd. prepareCwd then passes that plan to adapter.project and delivers the saved startup files directly.
When the destination contains an operator-edited projected target, normal planning would classify it as operator_conflict and hold it back. This path instead writes it. Startup skill delivery also writes its target without a conflict check. A setCwd operation can therefore overwrite user data before committing the new cwd.
Build a destination-aware projection plan before either adapter call. Apply the existing operator_conflict protection to both projection entries and startup files.

Thanks, @Aschenbath. We've read this against main. The verb fills a real gap: today there's no supported way to change an existing seat's launch directory, since editing the spec doesn't reach the seat and recreating the seat loses its history. Validating, saving and auditing the new directory is the right core. Seats that never use it are unchanged, and typing protection is untouched. Three changes:
After your push, we'll review the change, and then there's a final maintainer check before merge. |

Thanks again, @Aschenbath. A friendly check-in on our last comment: its three changes still stand. They were (1) a smaller shape, with a read-only conflict check and launch writing the startup files as it does today, (2) a rebase onto

…1498) `rig seat set-cwd <seat> --cwd <absolute-path> --reason <text>` saves an existing seat's working directory for its next fresh launch or rebuild handover. The seat's node, address, queue and history stay as they are. Until now the only routes were recreating the seat, which loses its history and handover lineage, or editing the database by hand. This carries #1154 by Aschenbath, in the smaller shape its review asked for. Their work is the validation, the audited save with its concurrent-change check, the read-only destination check, the route, the CLI verb and `launch_cwd` in `rig seat status`. What it does: - Saves the directory and a `node.cwd_changed` audit event (from, to, reason, operator) in one transaction, with a concurrent-change check. - Creates the folder if it's missing and writes nothing else there. The next launch writes the startup files, as it does today. - Before saving, it reads, without writing, the enumerated resource copies and startup skills that launch would place there. It refuses with `cwd_destination_conflict`, naming the paths, for an operator-edited file, an unrecorded file with different content, or two sources for one destination. That's stricter than launch, and it's a point-in-time check, not a guarantee against later changes; at adoption, launch applies its own policy. A refusal can leave the new folder created. An agent app takes no startup files, so none are checked for it. What it doesn't do: - The saved directory doesn't move the running process. Adopt it with `rig seat launch <seat> --fresh --stop --reason <text>` (a blank conversation) or `rig seat handover <seat> --source rebuild --reason <text>` (carries durable context). An in-place Codex restart isn't adoption: it keeps the directory it observes from the running process. - Until then, background work can already use the saved directory. For a running Claude seat, collector provisioning writes `.openrig/context-collector.cjs` and merges `.claude/settings.local.json` there, under its existing preservation rules, and managed compaction, manual or automatic, asks the seat to write its restore map there, which may be outside its current workspace. These are examples, not every consumer. Adopting promptly is guidance, not a guard against a poll or compaction that runs first. - Before adopting, `rig down`/`rig up` or a fork handover resumes the existing conversation in the saved directory, and Claude keeps conversations per project directory, so the resume may not find it (not run natively). Files in the old directory are left as they are. Tests: `seat-set-cwd.test.ts` (35 tests; real SQLite and the Claude, Codex, Pi, OMP and stub file adapters) covers the save and its event, symlinked destinations, refusals with no seat, custody or startup-file change (invalid input, missing or malformed startup context, an ambiguous seat, and destination conflicts for each runtime and resource kind), concurrent changes and audit-write failure leaving the old directory saved, the typing guard, and a community agent app's seat. The route, CLI lifecycle, handover-source and stub CLI journey tests pass. Native Claude or Codex conversation resume across directories was not run. What a user gets
Closes #762.
rig seat set-cwd <seat> --cwd <absolute-path> --reason <text>prepares an existing seat's filesystem startup material and saves its directory for future launches. Its identity, address, queue and history stay intact. The running process keeps its current directory until an explicit fresh launch or rebuild handover;rig seat statusexposes the saved selection aslaunch_cwd.Before startup writes, preparation checks copied resources at their actual runtime destinations, including nested plugin files and startup skills. Operator-edited files and unrecorded files with different content refuse the change with protected paths and recovery guidance. Unchanged recorded copies can refresh; identical unrecorded files stay unowned. Managed guidance and native configuration merges retain the runtime adapter's policy.
Preparation uses the existing per-seat serialization guard without granting an input lease or changing typing protection. The cwd and audit event commit together after preparation, verification and a final configuration check. Errors report possible prepared files. The old shared directory and source RigSpec remain for explicit maintenance. CLI help, reference docs and the shipped capability map describe these boundaries.
How you verified it
Candidate
e57dbd1a, based onbed4d458.047cdd92, full build, typecheck, repository checks (286 passed, one opt-in skip, and documentation/mirror/context-pack guards passed), 24 CLI lifecycle tests and the cwd CLI journey passed; the final CI run above repeats the complete project checks. The service tests use real SQLite and Claude, Codex, Pi, OMP and stub filesystem adapters, plus terminal no-op compatibility. They cover destination conflicts, directory-symlink failures before writes, ownership, refreshed sources, optional files, competing sources, preserved custody, canonical paths, typing protection, serialization, concurrent changes and audit rollback.
The CLI journey runs the real CLI, daemon, SQLite and tmux: the live process keeps its cwd and PID after selection; the new selection survives a daemon restart; an explicit fresh launch enters the new directory while preserving the node, history and queue. A rebuild-handover test checks the selected directory at the successor-launch boundary.
Local full-suite WSL coverage has known limits: the earlier full package run had 19,338 passes and 27 failures. A focused comparison reproduced the same seven failures on the unmodified base and candidate; other environment differences and timeouts were not all baseline-tested. The complete native suite is covered by the CI run above. No assertions or time limits were weakened.
Anything you were unsure about
Filesystem writes cannot roll back with SQLite; files can remain in the destination or runtime-managed state directories after failure or a daemon crash. Native Claude/Codex cross-directory conversation resume has not been tested: filesystem adapters are real, while the process journey uses scripted stub agents. No provider credentials or model calls are required.
