Companion to #727 (go: 1.26.6 -> 1.26.8). Both exist for the same reason: routine package sweeps have started landing upstream releases whose toolchain floor is above what we ship.

Why

pkgs#725 failed on both arches within seconds:

error: rustc 1.97.1 is not supported by the following packages:
  atuin@18.22.0 requires rustc 1.98.0

atuin is held at 18.19.0 on that branch until this lands, which let the other six updates in that stack through. 1.98.1 is current stable and one patch above atuin's floor.

The source mirror

packages/rust pulls from gs://minimal-staging-archives/, which did not have 1.98.1 — the mirror topped out at 1.97.1. Added it:

  1. downloaded rustc-1.98.1-src.tar.xz from static.rust-lang.org (244,440,824 bytes)
  2. verified its sha256 against upstream's published .sha256 → be1816e7…
  3. uploaded to the archive bucket
  4. re-read it back out of the bucket and re-hashed → same digest

That matches the existing convention: the mirrored 1.97.1 object hashes to exactly the sha256 upstream publishes, so the recipe hash is upstream's hash.

Scope

Version and source hash only. bootstrap.toml pins channel = "stable" with no version, and build.sh has no version references, so nothing else in the recipe moves.

Scheduling note

This rotates spec hashes for the packages that import rust, so expect a rebuild wave. packages/rust/build.ncl is also rewritten by the hex0 bootstrap work in #667 — whichever of the two lands second will need a rebase.

1.98.1 is current stable and one patch above atuin's floor. Source tarball
mirrored to gs://minimal-staging-archives/rustc-1.98.1-src.tar.xz: downloaded
from static.rust-lang.org, sha256 verified against the upstream .sha256 file
(be1816e7...), uploaded, then re-read back out of the bucket and re-hashed to

Only the version and source hash change. pins

Note for scheduling: this rotates spec hashes for the packages that import
rust, and packages/rust/build.ncl is also rewritten by the hex0 bootstrap work
in #667 — expect a conflict there whichever lands second.

Replays gominimal#724 onto current main. gominimal#724 was cut on 2026-09-18 and its branch
had gone stale enough that replaying it as-is would have reverted ~221
lines landed since by gominimal#725, gominimal#728 (rust 1.98.1) and gominimal#736; rebasing it
needed a force-push to the bot's branch. The eight bumps themselves are
unchanged and none were covered by those merges.

  varlock   1.19.0    -> 1.20.0
  vhs       0.11.0    -> 0.12.0
  vim       9.2.1116  -> 9.2.1119
  vlt       1.0.5     -> 1.1.0
  wrangler  4.125.0   -> 4.135.0
  yazi      26.8.15   -> 26.9.1
  zellij    0.45.0    -> 0.45.1
  zizmor    1.29.0    -> 1.30.1

Each file is taken verbatim from gominimal#724's head, so the source URLs and
sha256s are the ones the updater verified at cut time. All ten files were
untouched on main since gominimal#724's branch point, so the replay is a clean
apply rather than a merge resolution.

Verified: `mip dump --packages --arch amd64` evaluates the full catalog
(531 packages, exit 0) and each of the eight resolves to the version
above.
