bun: cap zig LLVM codegen shards to 8 on arm64 (hangs at 72) - #734
Conversation
Every cold bun build on res-server-arm64 (c4a-standard-72) stalls at the
same line — 'zig obj -> bun-zig.{0..71}.o' — and sits there with zero cache
writes until the 6h watchdog kills the run. Three sandboxes, 2026-09-19/20/21,
two of them on #667 (which rotates bun's spec hash via rust). amd64 with 144
shards completes in ~4 min. The fast arm64 'successes' in the run history are
cache hydrations, not compiles.
bun's local profile sets -Dllvm_codegen_threads=availableParallelism()
(scripts/build/zig.ts codegenThreads); upstream CI never exceeds 8 shards and
shipped releases use 1. Pin arm64 to 8 with the same sed+verify-grep pattern
as the lol-html patch (#228). This PR's own build is the experiment: a cold
arm64 bun build either completes, or hangs again and we capture the process
tree live.

Describe the failure as intermittent.
Line 46 states that every cold arm64 build stalled. The PR evidence states that cold arm64 builds can also complete in about two minutes. State that the hang is intermittent and that the 8-shard cap is a mitigation, not a confirmed root cause.
Based on learnings: treat an explanation for an intermittent failure as unverified unless the evidence excludes alternative causes.

Draft: this PR's build is an experiment, and a pass is only weak evidence — see the correction below.
The hang
Three retained arm64
bunsandboxes (2026-09-19 00:58, 09-20 19:15, 09-21 00:52) all end on the same line and never write another byte until the 6h watchdog fires (failed_reason: timeouton both #667 runs):The zig cache dir's newest file predates the step. amd64 with 144 shards completes in ~4 minutes.
Correction to my first write-up
I first wrote that every cold arm64 build hangs and that the fast successes were cache hydrations. Both claims were wrong. The provenance for spec
8e2e3619…(the spec that hung twice) names run93891565as its builder —full_build=true, 86 s onc4a-standard-72,.zstuploaded by that run at 15:36 with a signed envelope. And run48b27146(#728, rust 1.98.1) cold-built bun on arm64 with a never-before-seen spec in 122 s. So bun compiles on arm64 in ~2 minutes when it works; the hang is intermittent, and the same spec hung twice then succeeded. That points at a timing-dependent deadlock in the zig step rather than a size problem. Why 72, and why the cap is still reasonable
scripts/build/zig.tscodegenThreads()returnsavailableParallelism()for non-CI profiles →-Dllvm_codegen_threads=72here, on top of ninja's own 72+ jobs and whatever else the res-server is building at the time. Upstream's CI never exceeds 8 shards (ASAN); shipped releases use 1. 72 LLVM codegen threads on aarch64 is a configuration nobody upstream runs, and oversubscription is exactly where lost-wakeup / pool deadlocks surface. Pinning arm64 to 8 removes that configuration; it cannot, by itself, prove the deadlock is gone. The change
On
aarch64only,sedthat return to 8 with a verify-grep so a futurezig.tsrefactor fails loudly (same pattern as the lol-html patch, #228). amd64 untouched.What settles it
Catching the next hang live. The two 6-hour hangs were a wasted opportunity: the wedged process tree sat there for 12 hours in total and nobody captured it. Follow-up on the build-servers side: (1) a mid-stream read-timeout so a wedged step fails in minutes, not six hours (the #272 gap 1b sibling); (2) on timeout, dump
ps -L/wchanand the zig process's stacks into the sandbox before killing it, so the next occurrence is diagnosable after the fact.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
