Support scoped workspace/configuration with scopeUri for per-document settings

This PR requires redhat-developer/vscode-xml#1178

Add per-document settings support via LSP workspace/configuration with
scopeUri. This allows format settings to vary by folder or language in
multi-root workspaces.

  • Add ModelTextDocument<T, S> generic settings type with per-document
    settings cache (getSettings/setSettings/clearSettings)
  • Add ScopedField and @GlobalOnly in commons.config package for
reusable scoped configuration pull mechanism using reflection
  • Add getOrPullScopedSettings() async method in XMLTextDocumentService
with generation counter to prevent stale caching on race conditions
  • Use computeModelAsyncCompose for formatting and codeAction to chain
scoped settings pull without blocking .join()
  • Remove getIndentationSettings() that mutated global SharedSettings
  • Fix NPE in computeModelAsyncCompose when document is not open
  • Invalidate all cached settings on didChangeConfiguration

Fixes redhat-developer/vscode-xml#722, redhat-developer/vscode-xml#967

Signed-off-by: azerr azerr@redhat.com

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Formatting and code actions now honor XML settings scoped to the current workspace folder or document, including formatting preferences such as indentation and line wrapping.
    • Changes to workspace configuration are reflected in open documents, with shared settings used when scoped settings are unavailable.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds resource-scoped configuration discovery and per-document settings storage. Formatting and code-action requests now retrieve scoped settings asynchronously. Configuration changes clear cached settings, and document model types carry the settings value.

Changes: Scoped settings

Layer / File(s) Summary
Scoped setting contracts and discovery
org.eclipse.lemminx/src/main/java/org/eclipse/lemminx/commons/config/*, org.eclipse.lemminx/src/main/java/org/eclipse/lemminx/settings/*, org.eclipse.lemminx/src/main/resources/META-INF/native-image/reflect-config.json
Adds scope metadata and ConfigurationField utilities for finding scoped fields, creating configuration requests, applying results, and comparing values. Marks formatting options as resource-scoped. Updates SharedSettings copying and XMLFormattingOptions.merge, and adds native-image reflection entries.
Document settings storage and lookup
org.eclipse.lemminx/src/main/java/org/eclipse/lemminx/commons/ModelTextDocument.java, org.eclipse.lemminx/src/main/java/org/eclipse/lemminx/commons/ModelTextDocuments.java, org.eclipse.lemminx/src/main/java/org/eclipse/lemminx/commons/ModelValidatorDelayer.java, org.eclipse.lemminx/src/main/java/org/eclipse/lemminx/XMLTextDocumentService.java, org.eclipse.lemminx/src/main/java/org/eclipse/lemminx/XMLWorkspaceService.java, org.eclipse.lemminx/src/main/java/org/eclipse/lemminx/XMLLanguageServer.java
Document model types now carry a settings type and can get, set, and clear settings. XMLTextDocumentService retrieves and caches scoped settings, clears them after configuration changes, and uses settings-bearing document types in lifecycle and validation paths.
Formatting and code-action integration
org.eclipse.lemminx/src/main/java/org/eclipse/lemminx/XMLTextDocumentService.java
Formatting, range-formatting, and code-action requests use asynchronously retrieved scoped settings. The separate indentation-settings request is removed. Adds a composed asynchronous DOM-computation method.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 85d3d

Per-document settings may not take effect for standard clients, undermining the main behavior of this change. Fix configuration-value handling before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 85d3d

The inspected paths limit document overrides to formatting preferences and avoid applying them to shared defaults. A configuration-change race could leave a document using outdated preferences. No new privilege escalation or external-access path was established, but client compatibility and concurrent execution remain partially verified.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: Cache publication and invalidation do not share an atomic transition. If invalidation runs after a successful generation comparison but before setSettings, an obsolete response can repopulate the cleared document cache. Subsequent cache hits do not check the generation, so outdated formatting preferences could persist until another invalidation or document close. This is bounded configuration-control drift, not a demonstrated security-control bypass.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The inspected influence path is client-supplied configuration to formatting preferences to document formatting and code-action output within the connected server session. No downstream privilege, secret, tenant, or external-access expansion was established by this path; external extensions were not exhaustively assessed.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Response values are applied to a new settings instance. Formatting request options are then merged into a separate CompositeSettings copy, including when the cache reuses sharedSettings. These inspected paths do not apply document overrides directly to process-wide defaults.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Assignment failures are logged per field, leaving copied defaults for unsuccessful assignments; pull failures return shared settings. This contains configuration-application failures, but a successful response can represent a mixture of overrides and defaults rather than an all-or-nothing settings transaction.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make cache publication and invalidation one coordinated transition, or store generation-tagged entries and reject obsolete generations on cache reads. Explicitly define whether already-started requests may use pre-change settings so stronger consistency is not implied by cache invalidation alone.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

A failed or null configuration response now breaks formatting and code actions.

The removed getIndentationSettings logged a failed configuration request and fell back to the global settings. The new code has no exceptionally handler. A client error therefore fails formatting, rangeFormatting and codeAction.

A null result list also throws an NPE at results.size() in createScopedSettings. Handle both cases and fall back to sharedSettings.

A configuration change can leave old settings cached.

A configuration request can still be running when didChangeConfiguration calls clearAllScopedSettings(). In that case, the callback calls doc.setSettings with the old values after the clear. The document then keeps the old settings until the next configuration change.

To fix this, record a generation counter before the request. Increment the counter in clearAllScopedSettings. Cache the result only when the counter value is unchanged.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve the stored attribute-line-break setting in scoped copies.

If global splitAttributes is force and preserveAttributeLineBreaks is true, XMLFormattingOptions.merge copies the latter as false: its getter returns false in force mode. If a folder then overrides splitAttributes to preserve, formatting still uses false instead of the configured global value. Copy the stored field value rather than its mode-dependent effective value. This failure follows from the supplied XMLFormattingOptions.merge and getter implementations.

Preserve code-action capabilities in the scoped settings copy.

codeAction passes a SharedSettings copy to doCodeActions, but the copy does not copy codeActionSettings. Therefore, ICodeActionRequest.canSupportResolve() returns false, and clients that support codeAction/resolve can receive resolved actions instead.

Normalize configuration values before applying scoped fields.

When LSP4J/Gson returns ordinary configuration values, setFieldValue receives Boolean, Double, String, or ArrayList<Object>. The method only handles JsonPrimitive and JsonArray, so it ignores these values. Formatting, range-formatting, and code-action requests then use global formatting settings.

Convert the response value to a Gson tree at this boundary. This preserves the existing conversion logic and supports the actual protocol value types.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

setInt fails for Integer fields.

Field.setInt cannot write to a field of type Integer. It throws IllegalArgumentException, and the code then drops the value with only a warning. Use field.set(target, jp.getAsInt()) for the boxed type. Apply the same fix to Boolean.

Update the numeric and boolean conversion branches in ConfigurationField: use
field.set for boxed Integer and Boolean fields, while retaining
primitive-specific setters for int and boolean fields.

Apply ordinary Java configuration values.

The default LSP4J binding returns configuration values as Boolean, numeric, String, and List objects. ConfigurationField.setFieldValue only assigns JsonPrimitive and JsonArray values, so matching document-scoped settings remain equal to the shared settings. formatting, rangeFormatting, and codeAction all use this path, making per-document settings ineffective for standard clients.

Handle ordinary Java values in addition to Gson values.

settings

Add per-document settings support via LSP workspace/configuration with
scopeUri. This allows format settings to vary by folder or language in
multi-root workspaces.

- Add ModelTextDocument<T, S> generic settings type with per-document
  settings cache (getSettings/setSettings/clearSettings)
- Add ScopedField and @globalonly in commons.config package for
reusable scoped configuration pull mechanism using reflection
- Add getOrPullScopedSettings() async method in XMLTextDocumentService
with generation counter to prevent stale caching on race conditions
- Use computeModelAsyncCompose for formatting and codeAction to chain
scoped settings pull without blocking .join()
- Remove getIndentationSettings() that mutated global SharedSettings
- Fix NPE in computeModelAsyncCompose when document is not open
- Invalidate all cached settings on didChangeConfiguration

Fixes vscode-xml#722, vscode-xml#967, vscode-xml#1047, vscode-xml#1156
