Summary

EPUB imports preserve spoken text while removing marked print furniture. Electron keeps navigation available on Settings, places navigation above the voice library, offers a persistent expanded-sidebar preference, and prevents long Stories scripts overlapping generation controls.

Changes

Type

  • 🐛 Bug fix
  • ✨ New feature

Testing

  • EPUB regressions: 11 failures against the original implementation; repaired targeted suite: 92 passed.
  • Combined Electron sidebar/longform unit tests: 34 passed; TypeScript checks passed.
  • Offline Python and repository guards plus current-head CI are required before landing.

Checklist

  • I've tested this locally
  • I've updated relevant documentation
  • No local machine paths, logs, or personal env details in this PR
  • No version or dependency changes
  • Current-head cross-platform CI and runtime smoke matrix are green

Review disposition: Added/Changed/Fixed changelog sections follow CLAUDE.md's explicit convention; contributor credits are retained. This is an intentional integration batch, preserving the source PR histories.

Importing a publisher EPUB (Nosy Crow, "The Talkative Tiger") produced:
print page numbers glued onto prose ("happily as 2Zoe threw", "Meep.3")
and standing alone as "120" / "iv" paragraphs; the cover, title page,
teaser, dedication and copyright page each emitted as "Chapter N"; and
chapter headings reduced to the <h1> subtitle ("A New Arrival") while the
book's table of contents carried the real label ("Chapter One: A New
Arrival").

The extractor now skips page-number markup (epub:type="pagebreak",
role="doc-pagebreak", or a page-break/page-number class), drops any
paragraph that is only an arabic or roman folio, records the document's
epub:type tokens so front/back matter (cover, titlepage, dedication,
copyright-page, toc, …) is skipped unless it is also body matter, falls
back to a title heuristic for untagged EPUB 2 files, honours
linear="no", never narrates the nav document, and titles each chapter
from the EPUB 3 nav or EPUB 2 NCX table of contents when present.

On the sample book: 9 chapters titled "Chapter One: A New Arrival" …
"Chapter Nine: Once Upon a Time", no glued digits, no lone page numbers,
no ISBN/dedication/teaser text.

…drop on evidence

Greptile on debpalash#2208:
- The nav/NCX document is a user-supplied zip member like any other: it
now goes through the same per-entry and cumulative uncompressed-size
guards as the spine (skipped when too large; what is read counts toward
  the shared budget).
- TOC parsing accepts single- or double-quoted href/src attributes.
- The bare-number fallback no longer touches prose: it applies only to
documents that carry page-number markup, only to arabic numbers and
strict lowercase roman numerals, so "1984" in an unpaginated book,
a chapter numeral "IV" and a word like "civil" are narrated.

0ac30d7: all three Greptile findings addressed — nav/NCX members now go through the same per-entry and cumulative zip-bomb guards as the spine; TOC parsing accepts single- or double-quoted href/src; the bare-number fallback only runs for documents that carry page-number markup and only matches arabic numbers or strict lowercase roman numerals ("1984" in an unpaginated book, "IV", "civil" are narrated). Tests added for each; the sample book still yields 9 clean chapters.

Normalize EPUB member-read failures.

At line 258, zipfile.ZipFile.read can raise zipfile.BadZipFile for a corrupt member or RuntimeError for an encrypted member, but the handler catches only KeyError. audiobook_import maps only ValueError to HTTP 400, so these failures escape as HTTP 500. Normalize these failures to ValueError for all EPUB member reads, including the OPF and spine reads, and add fail-before/pass-after regression coverage.

…mbers raise ValueError

CodeRabbit on debpalash#2208: a landmarks nav ("Start of Content") linking a
chapter before the toc nav could name it, and an NCX listed earlier in the
manifest could beat the EPUB 3 nav. Section labels now come only from
<nav epub:type="toc"> (a nav document without one is read whole), and nav
labels take precedence over NCX regardless of order.

Every member read goes through _read_member: a truncated, CRC-broken,
encrypted or unsupported-compression member (BadZipFile / RuntimeError /
NotImplementedError / EOFError) becomes the ValueError the import route
already maps to a 400 with the reason; a malformed OPF likewise. Tests for
both.

Opening Settings swapped the whole left column: the navigation, voice
library and status bar disappeared and a different panel (brand header,
section list, Back) took their place, so the app's main menu moved around
between screens. The app shell now renders the main sidebar on Settings
routes too; the Settings column keeps its section list and search but
drops the duplicated brand header (the brand and window controls live in
the main sidebar), and /settings follows the same narrow-window sidebar
rules as the other secondary-panel workspaces.

Co-Authored-By: Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>
In the expanded sidebar the main navigation was rendered under the voice
library, so its vertical position depended on how tall the library
happened to be, and it sat at the opposite end from where the compact
rail shows it. It now sits directly under the header, above the library,
with the status bar and Settings link unchanged at the bottom.

…for the rail

On windows up to 1680px, opening a workspace that has its own side panel
(Projects, Transcribe, Tools, Stories, Dubbing, …) shrank the main sidebar
to a rail automatically, with no way to opt out. A persisted preference
(Settings → Appearance → Keep sidebar expanded, stored with the workspace
layout) now disables that; a workspace that shows the voice library itself
still collapses the duplicate, and the explicit close button keeps working.

The sidebar component carried its own copy of the rail/expanded logic with
a component-local "force expanded" state, while the header toggle used the
shared hook with store state — the two could disagree. The sidebar now
consumes the hook.

Strings in all 21 locales; hook test covers the preference, the
library-owning route and the explicit close.

now decoded with _decode_epub_entry before extraction.

The story editor's root was a shrinkable flex item (min-h-0 flex-1) inside
the page column that is itself the scroll container, so once the script was
taller than the viewport the lines overflowed their box and were drawn over
the "Synthesizing N of M chapters" panel and the Generate/Stop footer. The

P1 Self-closing pagebreak drops narration

A valid self-closing page-break element such as <span epub:type="pagebreak"/> is added to _pagebreak_stack, but HTMLParser does not call handle_endtag for it. The stack therefore remains set and silently discards all narration that follows; implement handle_startendtag so self-closing non-void elements are immediately balanced.

Verified against Python HTMLParser: its default handle_startendtag calls handle_starttag and handle_endtag, so current parsing already balances self-closing pagebreak markers. Commit c9cac16 adds span and div regression cases; both pass and preserve following narration.

EPUB 3 navigation document required nav element EPUB 2 compatibility root-level anchors specification

💡 Result:

<search_synthesis>
In EPUB 3, the navigation document is a required component that provides human- and machine-readable navigation information, superseding the EPUB 2 NCX file [1][2][3]. Requirements for the nav Element: The navigation document uses the HTML nav element to define navigation structures [4]. When a nav element is used in this document (specifically when it includes the epub:type attribute), it is subject to strict content restrictions [5][6]: - It may contain an optional heading (h1-h6 or hgroup) followed by a single ordered list (ol) [6]. - No other elements are permitted as direct children of the nav element [6]. - Each list item (li) in the ordered list must contain either a single anchor (a) element or a span element, optionally followed by a nested ordered list (ol) for subsidiary content [5][6]. - The span element is used to label groups of links and cannot be used in leaf list items [5][6]. EPUB 2 Compatibility and Root-Level Anchors: - EPUB 3 publications may include an EPUB 2 NCX file for forward compatibility with EPUB 2 reading systems [1][2]. - Because EPUB 3 navigation documents and EPUB 2 NCX files use different mechanisms for identification in the package document—the manifest nav property for EPUB 3 versus the spine toc attribute for EPUB 2—they can coexist within the same EPUB 3 publication without conflict [2]. - EPUB 3 reading systems are required to ignore the NCX in favor of the EPUB 3 navigation document [2]. - Similarly, the EPUB 2 guide element is deprecated in favor of the landmarks feature in the EPUB 3 navigation document, though authors may still include the guide element for backward compatibility [1][2]. Regarding root-level anchors, the navigation document structure is hierarchical, based on an ordered list (ol) of items [5][6]. There is no requirement or specification for "root-level anchors" outside of this standard ordered list structure within the nav element [5][6]. Any top-level navigation items must be structured as list items (li) within the primary ordered list governed by the nav element [6][7].

The EPUB navigation document provides baseline accessibility and navigation support and offers features to enhance navigation for all users. Prime among these are support for internationalization (for example, as an XHTML document itself, the EPUB navigation document natively supports ruby annotations) and support for embedded grammars (MathML and SVG can be included within navigation links). ... Although EPUB reading systems are not required to support these advanced text formatting features when they process the data to create their own table of contents, the dual role of the EPUB navigation document means the features can still be useful for their intended audience. Publishers can include the EPUB navigation document in the spine [epub-33] (i.e., as a page of content in the publication) so that users have direct access to the full HTML. ... Including the EPUB navigation document in the body of an EPUB publication also allows publishers tailor the display differently for users and reading systems. In highly structured documents, for example, it might not be desirable to display the complete table of contents to users in the body of the publication. In this case, the display level can be modified using the `hidden` attribute [epub-33]. This attribute is ignored by reading systems when they render the table of contents outside the spine (e.g., in their own specialized views), which avoids minimizing the information that is available and improves the overall accessibility. ... Reject navigation documents without a <nav> element.

An EPUB 3 navigation document requires a <nav> element; EPUB 2 uses an NCX instead. This fallback scans unrelated root anchors, which can rename a spine document and trigger ancillary filtering. Treat the navigation as unavailable and add regression coverage.
