fix(epub): unmarked teaser and stray back-matter pages are not chapters - #2228
Conversation
Untagged publisher EPUBs put unmarked pages around the book: a teaser excerpt ahead of the title page, a footnotes page after the publisher's address. No epub:type, no heading, not in the contents — so the importer narrated them as 'Chapter 1' / 'Chapter 23'. What says 'not a chapter' is structural, so that is what decides now: - The declared reading start (EPUB 2 guide 'text' reference, EPUB 3 landmarks 'bodymatter'): unlisted, untyped pages ahead of it are front matter. Trusted only alongside a TOC, which keeps a LISTED prologue that sits before a too-late 'start reading' mark. - No declared start: the first contents-listed non-ancillary section is the start; only short (<=400 words), heading-less, unlisted pages ahead of it go, so an unlisted long prologue is never dropped on the weaker signal. - At the back the same stray pages go only once LISTED back matter has begun: an unlisted file straight after a chapter is its continuation and stays. - Ancillary titles gain 'Works/Books/Titles by', 'About the Publisher', 'Footnotes', 'Endnotes'. Real books: The Super Sloth 9 -> 8 sections, The Hobbit 23 -> 20 (Author's Note + 19 chapters), The Talkative Tiger unchanged at 9.

The PR appears safe to merge with no outstanding merge-changing defects. SummaryUpdates EPUB section classification to exclude structurally identified teaser and stray back-matter pages while retaining listed, typed, headed, or substantive narrative sections. in_back_matter becomes true only when the ancillary section is listed in the

documentation so pages before an EPUB 2 guide text or EPUB 3 bodymatter start
are skipped only when a table of contents is present; without a TOC, retain the
short, heading-less stray-page condition.

…te the TOC condition An unlisted page that merely looks ancillary (a 'Dedication' heading mid-book) set in_back_matter, so the short unlisted file after it, a chapter's continuation, could be dropped. Regression test fails before, passes after. Docs: a declared start is cross-checked against the contents; without one only short heading-less unlisted pages are skipped.
Requiring a listed section to OPEN back matter also let an unlisted ancillary
page ('Endnotes' by heading) close it again, so the stray page after it was
narrated. The state is now sticky until a real section follows. Regression
test fails before, passes after; the 'unlisted page does not open back
matter' guard still holds.

Problem
Follow-up to #2208. Untagged publisher EPUBs put unmarked pages around the book: a 40-word teaser excerpt ahead of the title page, a footnotes page after the publisher's address. They carry no
epub:type, no heading, and the contents does not list them, so the importer narrated them as# Chapter 1/# Chapter 23.Fix
What says "this is not a chapter" is structural, so structure decides:
<guide><reference type="text">and EPUB 3 landmarksepub:type="bodymatter". Unlisted, untyped pages ahead of it are front matter. Trusted only alongside a TOC: the TOC is what keeps a listed prologue that sits before a (commonly too-late) "start reading" mark.Works/Books/Titles by,About the Publisher,Footnotes,Endnotes.Real books
Chapter 1, 40 words)Works by…,About the Publisher, bogusChapter 23footnotes)Tests
backend/tests/test_longform_import_epub_matter.py: guide start, landmarks start, TOC-only start with the long-prologue guard, listed/body-typed sections before the start are kept, unlisted pages after the start are untouched, no-navigation books unchanged, stray back-matter pages dropped while a split last chapter's continuation file is kept. Docs:docs/electron-longform.md.EPUB import now uses declared reading starts, TOC membership, headings, and persistent back-matter state to exclude teaser and stray back-matter pages while preserving valid prologues and chapter continuations. Focused tests and documentation cover these rules. Review the boundary heuristics for short, heading-less sections that may be valid content.
