Summary

Integrates reviewed Electron and shared-backend fixes for long-form audio, subtitle import/export, Windows media tools, engine installation and generation controls. Preserves all contributor commits and changelog credits.

Changes

Includes #2216, #2217, #2222, #2223, #2224, #2225, #2226, #2228, #2230, #2233, #2239, #2240, #2241, #2242 and #2243. #2229 is already on main.

Review fixes were made on the original PR branches before integration: preserve omitted legacy join settings and compatible environments; trim the actual joined audio; preserve EPUB content and literal caption text; handle malformed render summaries; localize render settings; bound probes and scrub diagnostic paths.

Type

  • Bug fixes
  • Electron feature improvements from reviewed contributor PRs

Testing

  • 875 initial targeted backend tests; 327 affected backend regressions rerun after final review fixes.
  • 627 Electron tests before final review; changed component tests and all 21 locale checks rerun after localization fixes.
  • Web suite: 2939 passed, three resource-contention timeouts passed on focused retries. Full clean CI remains mandatory.
  • Web/Electron TypeScript checks.
  • Real native FFmpeg filter-file audio output.
  • Fresh Python 3.11/empty uv cache resolves dots.tts dependencies in dry-run mode.
  • Current-head full CI and all platform/security checks must pass before merge.

Checklist

  • CodeRabbit and Greptile findings read and addressed on original branches.
  • Documentation and contributor credits retained.
  • Local-first/offline test conditions retained.
  • No version bump or release publication.

Release cadence

Merge with a merge commit so included PR heads remain ancestors. Watch main CI, security and Docker publishing after merge. Do not release from this PR: native dots.tts installation/audio validation and other open issues remain outstanding.

Adds long-form audio join controls, story splitting, caption and EPUB fidelity, engine installation fixes, render summaries, and localized UI. The changes preserve legacy defaults while improving rendering, imports/exports, media-tool recovery, and engine compatibility. Full current-head CI and platform/security checks remain required, with review focused on audio joins, installer rollback, and WebVTT handling.

… between lines and paragraphs

Every engine pads each rendered line with its own lead-in and tail silence
(GPT-SoVITS measured at ~70 ms / ~300 ms). Audiobook and Stories joined those
raw with a 50 ms crossfade, so a book of short lines read as a string of
separate takes with a hole at every boundary.

The renderer now trims that padding at every chunk edge (-40 dBFS, 40 ms
kept) and inserts silence on purpose instead: line_gap_ms (250) between
consecutive lines that carry no [pause] of their own, paragraph_gap_ms (600)
at a blank line inside one line of script. An explicit [pause] replaces the
line gap rather than adding to it. All three knobs are bounded request
fields, ride through ExpressiveOptions (cache signature + resume manifest,
so a changed gap re-renders and a worker render honours it) and are exposed
in both apps' Production overrides. Zero gaps + trim off reproduce the
pre-existing bytes and cache keys.
Every Stories line is an independent generation, so the old one-preset
splitter (sentence-aware, 180/500 chars) turned a single-narrator storybook
into a string of separate takes. Paste & Split now offers three presets in
both apps: Sentences (the existing splitter, with the max-chars input),
Paragraphs (one line per blank-line paragraph, falling back to single
newlines; the new default) and Chapters (one line per chapter body, split
only at '# ' headings, paragraph breaks preserved for the renderer). A '# '
heading is always its own line so it still renders as a chapter marker.

The web editor's private copy of splitIntoChunks is gone; both editors use
the shared frontend/src/utils/splitStoryText helper.
…ore normaliser

normalizeLongformOverrides rebuilt the overrides object field by field, so
lineGapMs / paragraphGapMs / trimEdges were dropped on every rehydrate (and
the literal no longer satisfied LongformOverrides — the typecheck failure).
Carry them with the same type guards as the other knobs; migration test
covers 0 / false surviving and a mistyped value falling back to null.
… stay byte-identical, bounded join silence

- Gaps follow LINES, not spans: inline markup ([slow], [emphasis], [spell])
splits one line into several spans. Both parser ports now mark those spans
'continues' (key present only when true, so plain plans, manifests and cache
keys are byte-identical) and the join never gaps after one. Carried through
LongformSpan, Span.to_dict, the chapter cache tuple and the worker rows.
Golden corpus: one existing case gains the key, one dedicated case added.
- With paragraph_gap_ms=0 a span is ONE engine call again, so 0/0/false truly
reproduces the pre-existing bytes under the pre-existing cache key.
- The join stage may add at most 15 min of silence per chapter (gaps shorten
past that); paragraph_gap_ms bound tightened to 5 s.
- The shared help string describes both gaps: key renamed joins_help.
…endings, Electron's 500-char default

- Chapter boundaries now use the renderer's own isChapterLine (a non-empty
H1), so '## Scene' or a bare '#' stays body text instead of becoming a
track that is narrated rather than rendered as a chapter marker.
- LF, CRLF and lone CR all separate lines and paragraphs.
- Electron's Sentences preset keeps its established 500-char ceiling.
'continues' was set on every non-final markup segment, so a paragraph break
that happened to sit between two segments (or inside a dropped whitespace-only
one) was swallowed and the join got no gap at all. Both parser ports now track
the whitespace between kept segments and only mark a continuation when it
holds no blank line. A single newline stays a continuation, matching plain
text, where a single newline never ends a span either. Three golden cases.
The boolean 'continues' could only say 'no gap'; a paragraph break that sat
on an inline-markup split fell back to the line gap. The span key is now
'join': 'continue' (sentence runs on, no gap) or 'paragraph' (blank line on
the split: paragraph gap, or the line gap when none is set). Still emitted
only where markup split a run, so plain plans, manifests and cache keys stay
byte-identical. Both parser ports, the request model (validated Literal),
the chapter cache tuple, worker rows and the golden corpus follow.
…ccurate joins help

- chapter_cache_key dropped the tuple's 5th element, so plans differing only
in join (continue / paragraph / none) shared a cached chapter. It now counts
when present; a plan without one hashes exactly as before (test).
- joins_help in all 21 locales x 2 apps: says which gap goes where and that
edge trimming applies only when the switch is on.
- Docs: a [voice:] change is a line boundary (line gap), by design.
YouTube's automatic captions roll: every cue repeats the line before it,
and each cue starts exactly where the previous one ended. The repeat
trim only ran for cues that overlapped their predecessor, so seeding a
Dub job from such a track spoke every line two or three times.

WebVTT escapes & < and > in cue text, so a caption track saves "Q&A"
as "Q&amp;A" and a ">>" speaker change as "&gt;&gt;". Neither the
downloaded caption track nor a pasted .vtt translation decoded them,
so the dub editor showed the escapes and sent them to the voice as text.

The start and end fields show tenths of a second and commit on blur.
An untouched field still held that rounded text, so tabbing through or
clicking out of it moved a transcribed 3.27 s edge to 3.3 s and ran the
resize path, which also rewrites the segment's speed.

parseSrt dropped every digits-only line as a cue index, including the
dialogue after the timestamp, so a countdown ("3", "2", "1") or an
answer like "1984" vanished from the imported script. Only the digits
right before a timestamp are the index.

Rolling tracks restate the entire previous line, so that is all a cue
that merely touches its predecessor needs to lose. A single word that
recurs across a boundary ("we should go" / "go home") stays; the
partial trim for overlapping cues is unchanged.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…value

Comparing the field with its display could not tell an untouched field
from one where the shown time was typed on purpose, so retyping 0:03.3
to snap a 3.27 s edge did nothing. Track whether the field was edited
since it was focused instead.

In a compact .srt without blank lines, a cue whose only dialogue is a
number can sit right before the next timestamp when that cue has no
index. A cue needs text, so digits directly under a timestamp are its
dialogue.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…sequence

Inside a block without blank lines, digits right before a timestamp are
only its index when they are the number the cue sequence expects next,
as the backend parser decides. A cue that ends in a number and is
followed by an unnumbered cue keeps that number.

WebVTT cue text must escape & < and >. A raw < opens a tag, so a player
drops the rest of the cue ("I <3 you" shows as "I "), and a line with
--> reads as a timing line. The /dub/vtt download and the OpenAI-compatible
vtt transcription wrote segment text verbatim. The dual layout's <i> stays
markup; SRT has no escaping and is unchanged.

…ping

Escaping on export is only safe once import decodes the references, so
this branch now builds on #2223. A pasted .vtt with &amp;, &lt; and &gt;
exports those exact references again, not &amp;amp;.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Escaping every & < > turned imported cue markup (<i>, <c.yellow>,
<v Roger>, SubRip's <font>) into literal text and made an undecoded
&amp; export as &amp;amp;. Escape just a < that opens no tag and the
--> that would end the cue; a bare & already displays as itself. This
no longer depends on #2223's import decoding, so the branch is back on
main.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A raw & is not valid WebVTT cue text. Write it as &amp; unless it already
starts a character reference, so an undecoded &amp; is not escaped twice.

…essional read

Full-chapter listen test (1,564 words, GPT-SoVITS fine-tune) against the same
chapter read professionally: the trim keeps each paragraph's natural decay,
so the heard break is gap + ~0.3-0.4 s. At 600 ms that put 26 breaks over one
second (reference: 2); 300-400 ms matched the reference's pause spread.

# 350, not more: the trim keeps each paragraph's natural decay (~0.3-0.4 s of
# near-silence), so the HEARD break is gap + decay. Measured on a full chapter
# against a professional read, 600 put 26 breaks over a second; 300-400 matched.

P1 Seamless Defaults Become Hard Joins

When Electron leaves the displayed join controls untouched, it omits these fields, but these defaults apply zero gaps and disable edge trimming. Users therefore get hard joins instead of the 250 ms line gap, 350 ms paragraph gap, and trimming shown by the UI; restore those backend defaults or always send the displayed values.

Fixed on original PR #2216 in 78b7507, integrated in 837885f. Untouched/reset controls now display the preserved API defaults: zero gaps and trimming off. Explicitly selected seamless gaps/trimming still reach both preview and full renders. This keeps existing requests/cache behavior unchanged instead of silently changing old projects. Both Electron and web UI regressions fail before and pass after; 24 targeted tests and Electron TypeScript pass. Millisecond displays now use locale-aware Intl units in both clients.

All ten inline CodeRabbit findings were addressed on the original PR branches and integrated in a2531d0. The outside-diff dots.tts docs command also now uses the repaired constraints file (a33e647 on #2243). 327 affected backend tests pass together after integration; current-head full CI remains the merge gate.
