Adds an alpha crossplane xr simulate (#367). It previews how applying changed composite resource or claim files would change a live cluster. Each input is rendered with the Composition the cluster selects for it and the cluster's functions, diffed against the cluster, and its composed managed resources are planned by their providers' diff servers. A claim is simulated as its composite resource, and its result is listed under the claim's name. This is crossplane-diff's xr mode, which #436 had as an input mode of project simulate before the split.
-f/--input is required. It takes a composite resource or claim file or a directory of them, as a comma-separated list, and can be repeated, as composition simulate's does. -f - reads standard input.
There are no selection flags (-n, --name, --include-pinned, --analyze-on, --minimize-composition) and no --max-concurrency, because the inputs are the resources to simulate. Passing one is an unknown-flag error.
Shared code: the command is about 60 lines (cmd/crossplane/xr/simulate.go) and calls the same Flags.Run as project simulate and composition simulate, through a new Composites input. The runner, exit ranking, checks, rejection messages and help sections stay shared.
The XR-only diff path in internal/diff/diffprocessor (PerformDiff, the input validator) with its mocks and tests.
XRReport, FromXRReport, AnnotateXRReport, renderXRReport and the XRD check (checkComposites).
The grouped per-XR diff renderer (renderGrouped) and NameGenerated, which overlap.go uses.
The XR parts of internal/simulate/simtest (XR and combined assertions), and the router parameter on the integration harness.
TestDiffIntegration, TestSimulateProviderPlan, the XR plan-output cases, and the testdata they reference.
New:
xr simulate passes LoadInputs its own validate closure. It rejects a Composition, a project file or a List, and treats anything else as a candidate, which is confirmed against the cluster's XRDs before rendering. Rejections use the shared message, for example: -f inputs include Composition "<name>" (apiextensions.crossplane.io/v1); xr simulate takes composite resource or claim files; composition simulate takes Composition files
An input no XRD defines gets the same template with its reason: -f inputs include <Kind> "<name>" (<group/version>), which no XRD in the cluster defines as a composite resource or claim (if it is one, check the kubeconfig context, its apiVersion and that its XRD is installed); xr simulate takes composite resource or claim files
A kind: List input is rejected at load, before connecting to the cluster, with ; pass its items as separate YAML documents instead of a List.
imageConfigs come only from --image-configs, as for composition simulate.
Changes to the other simulate commands:
The project, composition and resource simulate helps all point at crossplane xr simulate, and resource simulate's help points at the other three.
The shared -o plan help no longer says a Composition always prints first. The design doc lists all four simulate commands.
Restore PerformDiff with its input validator, ValidatedInput, the
WithInputValidatorFactory option, their mocks, test helpers and tests
from the state before the XR-only path was removed. Keep the
TestManagedByManagerWithNoName case that the managedBy/boundToClaim
table port added and the restored tests lack.

Inputs that are neither Compositions nor project files are composite
resource candidates, which checkComposites confirms against the
cluster's XRDs. Every rejection uses RejectInput's template, so
composition and xr simulate point at each other symmetrically. The
runner gains a Composites input that runs PerformDiff and renders
through renderXRReport.

The CLI adds crossplane xr simulate for composite resources and claims. The shared simulation pipeline validates inputs, computes XR diffs, and renders grouped reports. The change also adds command documentation, integration coverage, and structured assertions for XR simulation results.
Changes: XR simulation
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Command and input handling cmd/crossplane/xr/*, internal/simulate/inputs.go, internal/simulate/inputs_test.go, cmd/crossplane/*/help/simulate.md, design/one-pager-cli-simulate.md
Adds the alpha xr simulate command for XR and claim inputs, with input validation against XRDs. Help text directs project, Composition, XR, and managed-resource inputs to their respective simulation commands.
XR diff processing and validation internal/diff/result/types.go, internal/diff/types/types.go, internal/diff/diffprocessor/*, internal/diff/testutils/mocks.go
Adds ordered XR report groups, run-level errors, warnings, and PerformDiff. The default validator handles duplicate and conflicting inputs, managed-input rejection, and render overlaps.
Renders multiple identity-bearing XR groups as ordered sections with per-group summaries and an aggregate footer. Identity-less diffs contribute to totals without a section.

Explanation
The description states that the PR adds an alpha crossplane xr simulate command. It explains the flags, the shared Flags.Run path, the input validation and rejection messages, the help text changes for the other simulate commands, and the restored XR diff, report, and test code. It matches the changeset closely.
Full details: Feature Gate Requirement
Explanation
The new experimental xr simulate command can run without enabling its feature flag. The new command is tagged maturity:"alpha", but internal/maturity/maturity.go:19-22 says disabled commands remain callable. cmd/crossplane/xr/simulate.go:57-75 starts simulation without checking features.enableAlpha. The previous failure remains unresolved.
Resolution
Check features.enableAlpha before running xr simulate and reject the command when it is disabled. Add coverage for both flag states.

Could we assert the resources and invoke the composition provider with a configured mock? The current mock ignores both arguments, so the test would pass with a nil handoff. Integration tests cover the path, but the default unit suite excludes them. Thanks!

still contributes its diffs.
- Line 338: Update the aggregate count accumulation in DiffRenderer so identical

API group and namespace alongside g.XR.Kind and g.XR.Name, using the existing XR
metadata fields and matching the identity shown in plan output so compact diff

- Around line 101-102: Update the XRD acceptance gate around GetXRDForXR to
continue only when the XRD defines the requested claim version; otherwise,
preserve the input rejection path for manually applied claim CRDs serving a
version absent from the XRD.
- Around line 98-104: Update the XRD lookup flow in the input validation path to
distinguish missing definitions from lookup failures. Continue checking both
GetXRDForClaim and GetXRDForXR, but when neither finds an XRD and either lookup
returns an operational error, propagate that error instead of reporting that no
XRD defines the input; retain the existing rejection for genuine missing
definitions.

Review comments at @internal/simulate/simtest/plan_assertions.go:
- Around line 456-458: Update the delete-expectation assertion near the planned
check to also verify that the field is absent from the Before state, not only
the After state. Ensure deleted empty maps and lists are caught even when they
produce no leaf changes, and add a regression test for an empty field.
- Around line 592-595: Update the validation-failure matching loop in the plan
assertions to ensure each expected validation failure matches a distinct entry
in got.ValidationFailures. Track matched entries or remove each selected entry
from further consideration, while preserving the existing field and
optional-namespace matching rules and the count check.
- Around line 368-370: Update the error lookup in the assertion loop to match
each expected error by both its ID and full reference, rather than selecting by
ID alone and checking the reference afterward. Add a regression test covering
two XRs with the same Kind and name in different namespaces, ensuring each
assertion finds its corresponding error.
- Around line 387-388: Update the matching logic in the resource-expectation
loop around findMatchingPlan so each plan can satisfy at most one expectation,
including when name patterns overlap. Apply the distinct-match behavior to both
flat and XR-scoped assertions, and preserve the existing resource matching
criteria.
- Around line 627-629: Update the want.errors matching logic in the assertion
loop to match each expected error against a distinct entry in got.Errors,
comparing type, field, message, and value without depending on expectation
order. Track matched entries so a later expectation cannot reuse an earlier
match.
- Around line 468-469: Update the assertion logic around assertAbsentInAfter so
an explicit null in both Changes and After is accepted instead of requiring the
field to be absent. Add a regression test covering WithField(path, nil) for
create and update plans with After set.
- Around line 74-75: Update the error-matching loop that calls findMatchingError
so each expectation in expected.errors matches a distinct entry in res.Errors,
tracking matched entries rather than reusing the same result. Add a regression
test with XR/a and XR/b results and two WithError("XR/a") expectations,
verifying the unmatched XR/b is not silently accepted.
Review comments at @internal/simulate/simtest/structured_assertions.go:
- Around line 460-461: The WithXRs assertion currently allows expectations to
match composites out of order despite promising ordered comparison. Update
WithXRs to compare each expected XR with the composite at the corresponding
position, and add a reversed-order test that fails when the output order
differs.
- Around line 382-384: Update the ResourceExpectation validation involving
WithDryRunStorageVersion so the configured version is checked even when
WithDryRunSkipped is absent, and reject conflicting WithDryRunPerformed
expectations. Ensure a missing DryRun or a DryRun with a different storage
version cannot satisfy the expectation.
- Around line 97-102: The ResourceExpectation.expectation method returns a nil
root for XR-scoped resources created with XR(...).Change(...), causing
AssertStructured to panic. Update the structured assertion path to report that
WithXRs is required when the root is missing, and update the any-builder-level
documentation to describe this requirement.

return rejectInput(r, "which no XRD in the cluster defines as a composite resource or claim (if it is one, check the kubeconfig context, its apiVersion and that its XRD is installed)", XRTakes)
If neither lookup succeeds because access to an XRD is denied, this reports that the input has no XRD instead of showing the access error. Could we distinguish lookup failures from missing definitions and return the underlying error? That would help users identify the required recovery. Thank you!

Update the XRD lookup flow in the input validation path to distinguish missing
definitions from lookup failures. Continue checking both GetXRDForClaim and
GetXRDForXR, but when neither finds an XRD and either lookup returns an
operational error, propagate that error instead of reporting that no XRD defines
the input; retain the existing rejection for genuine missing definitions.

You're right that a failed lookup, such as a Forbidden GET on the XRD, is reported as "no XRD defines it". Declining for now: the rejection already tells the user to check the kubeconfig context and that the XRD is installed, and the help says up front that the command needs read access to the cluster's Crossplane resources.

When a create or update plan contains an explicit null in both Changes and After, WithField(path, nil) fails because this check requires the field to be absent. Could we remove this check and add a regression test with After set? Thanks!

Update the assertion logic around assertAbsentInAfter so an explicit null in
both Changes and After is accepted instead of requiring the field to be absent.
Add a regression test covering WithField(path, nil) for create and update plans
with After set.

Match field errors one-to-one using all refinements.
Thanks for adding these assertions. When two errors share a type and field, the second expectation checks the first error again. This can reject correct output or accept incorrect output. Could we match distinct entries using type, field, message and value, independent of expectation order?

Update the want.errors matching logic in the assertion loop to match each
expected error against a distinct entry in got.Errors, comparing type, field,

When a caller passes XR(...).Change(...) directly, AssertStructured panics on a nil root. Could we report that WithXRs is required and update the any-builder-level documentation? Thank you.

The ResourceExpectation.expectation method returns a nil root for XR-scoped

Update the structured assertion path to report that WithXRs is required when the

requirement.

Could we compare each expectation with the corresponding composite and add a reversed-order test? WithXRs promises an ordered assertion, but [XR/b, XR/a] passes when the expected order is [XR/a, XR/b]. This can hide an output-order regression. Thanks!

The WithXRs assertion currently allows expectations to match composites out of
order despite promising ordered comparison. Update WithXRs to compare each
expected XR with the composite at the corresponding position, and add a
reversed-order test that fails when the output order differs.

Errors, resource plans, validation failures and field errors were matched
first-wins, so two expectations could be satisfied by one result while the
count check still passed. Track used results as the warnings matcher does,
and match per-XR errorIDs by ref so same-named XRs in different namespaces
do not fail spuriously.

WithFieldAbsent on a delete read only leaf changes, so an empty map or
list in Before passed. WithDryRunStorageVersion was silently unchecked
without WithDryRunSkipped. WithXRs matches regardless of order, so say so.

A claim or namespaced composite resource with no metadata.namespace now
takes the context namespace, as kubectl apply would. Cluster-scoped
composite resources are left alone.

@coderabbitai Thanks for the review. On the items in the review summary, at head fd3f780:
Fixed:
plan_assertions.go:74, :387, :627: each expectation for top-level errors, resource plans and field errors now matches a different result (80be2bd).
plan_assertions.go:368: per-XR error IDs now match on the XR's ref too, so two XRs with the same kind and name in different namespaces no longer fail wrongly (80be2bd).
structured_assertions_test.go:456: AbsentFieldFails now sets the added and removed expectations, so only the absence check can fail it (80be2bd).
structured_assertions.go:382: WithDryRunStorageVersion is checked even without WithDryRunSkipped, and combining it with WithDryRunPerformed is reported as a contradiction (a7b1611).
structured_assertions.go:460: the WithXRs doc now says expectations are matched regardless of order (a7b1611).
Declined:
plan_assertions.go:468, explicit null in After: it makes a test fail loudly rather than pass wrongly.
structured_assertions.go:97, nil root for an XR-scoped change: it panics loudly, and the doc comment already says XR-scoped expectations are for WithXRs.
diff_renderer_test.go:202 (header order), run_test.go:1032 (mock arguments) and structured_assertions_test.go:489 (case names): test polish or style only. The integration suite covers the handoff the mock skips.
Feature gate: xr simulate is already gated by maturity:"alpha" on the command, which main.go enforces.

Failed pre-merge checks:
- Feature Gate Requirement:
Check `features.enableAlpha` before running `xr simulate` and reject the command
when it is disabled. Add coverage for both flag states.

@jcogilvie Thanks for the detailed update. I inspected the reported changes at fd3f7809. The matching, XR reference, absence test, dry-run, and WithXRs documentation changes are present. I accept your decisions on the declined assertion and test-polish items.
Two saved pre-merge checks still need clarification:
Feature Gate Requirement:maturity:"alpha" follows the repository’s documented convention, which also appears in retrieved review guidance. It hides the command from help, but internal/maturity/maturity.go states that the command remains callable. The saved check reports a failure because it requires a runtime restriction. Please reconcile the check with the repository convention. If the runtime restriction is required, it needs an enable check and tests for both states.
Breaking Changes: The PR currently has no labels. The saved check asks for a breaking-change label or an optional flag. Since this is a new command, please confirm whether that requirement applies.
I did not run tests or re-run the pre-merge checks.

# Contributing to the Crossplane CLI
## Command Maturity Levels
Alpha and beta commands are marked as such using a custom kong struct tag,
`maturity:"alpha"` or `maturity:"beta"`. These struct tags control two things:
1. Alpha commands are hidden from the help output by default. Users must enable
showing alpha commands in their CLI configuration file.
2. Alpha and beta commands automatically have notes added to their help text
indicating the maturity level and what it means.

Learning: The Crossplane CLI (crossplane/cli) does not use programmatic feature flags for experimental features. Instead, it uses the `maturity` struct tag (e.g., `maturity:"beta"`) on kong command registrations to signal experimental/beta status. This tag is applied at the parent command level (e.g., the `Dependency`, `Project`, `XRD`, etc. top-level Cmd fields in cmd/crossplane/main.go), so subcommands like `dependency add`, `dependency update-cache`, and `dependency clean-cache` are already gated under the parent's maturity annotation. Do not flag missing feature flags or suggest wrapping command registration behind a feature gate function; the maturity tag is the correct and sufficient mechanism.

Description of your changes
Adds an alpha
crossplane xr simulate(#367). This is crossplane-diff'sxrmode, which #436 had as an input mode ofproject simulatebefore the split.simulate.Flagsonly.-f/--inputis required. It takes a composite resource or claim file or a directory of them, as a comma-separated list, and can be repeated, ascomposition simulate's does.-f -reads standard input.-n,--name,--include-pinned,--analyze-on,--minimize-composition) and no--max-concurrency, because the inputs are the resources to simulate. Passing one is an unknown-flag error.cmd/crossplane/xr/simulate.go) and calls the sameFlags.Runasproject simulateandcomposition simulate, through a newCompositesinput. It rejects a Composition, a project file or a List, and treats anything else as a candidate, which is confirmed against the cluster's XRDs before rendering. Rejections use the shared message, for example:-f inputs include Composition "<name>" (apiextensions.crossplane.io/v1); xr simulate takes composite resource or claim files; composition simulate takes Composition files-f inputs include <Kind> "<name>" (<group/version>), which no XRD in the cluster defines as a composite resource or claim (if it is one, check the kubeconfig context, its apiVersion and that its XRD is installed); xr simulate takes composite resource or claim fileskind: Listinput is rejected at load, before connecting to the cluster, with; pass its items as separate YAML documents instead of a List.--image-configs, as forcomposition simulate.project, compositionandresource simulatehelps all point atcrossplane xr simulate, andresource simulate's help points at the other three.-o planhelp no longer says a Composition always prints first.
