Description of your changes

Adds an alpha crossplane composition simulate (#367). It previews how changed Composition files would change the composite resources on a live cluster, without a project: each composite resource that uses one of the Compositions is rendered with the changed version and the cluster's functions, diffed against the cluster, and its composed managed resources are planned by their providers' diff servers. This is crossplane-diff's comp mode, which #436 had as an input mode of project simulate before the split.

crossplane composition simulate -f network.yaml -f database.yaml -n team-a
  • Flags: the same as project simulate, except for -f and --max-concurrency.
    • -f/--input is required and repeatable, and takes a Composition file or a directory of them, one path per flag. -f - reads standard input.
    • It keeps the selection flags -n/--namespace, --name, --include-pinned, --analyze-on and --minimize-composition.
    • There is no --max-concurrency, since nothing is built.
  • Shared code: the command is about 60 lines (cmd/crossplane/composition/simulate.go). It embeds simulate.Flags and simulate.CompositionFlags and calls the same Flags.Run as project simulate, so the two commands share one runner, one exit ranking, one set of checks and the shared help sections (simulate.Help).
  • Restored from feat(project): add alpha project simulate on the ported crossplane-diff engine #436's pre-split state, mostly unchanged: the exact composite loader with WithoutPipelineInputs (pkg/load), the internal/simulate/simtest assertion helpers (pruned to what the Composition cases call), longTimeout, the Composition branch of the runner (functions from the cluster, providers started per composite resource unless --providers is set), TestCompDiffIntegration, the Composition plan-output cases, and the testdata they reference.
  • New:
    • An input classifier in internal/simulate/inputs.go. Each simulate command takes one class of -f input, and every rejection comes from one function, so the commands can't word the same check differently. A non-Composition input fails before any cluster call with:
-f inputs include <Kind> "<name>" (<group/version>); composition simulate takes Composition files
followed by ; project simulate takes a project file for a project file.
    • A kind: List input is rejected the same way, with ; pass its items as separate YAML documents instead of a List appended.
    • imageConfigs come only from --image-configs. Unlike the pre-split Composition mode, the command never reads a crossplane-project.yaml in the current directory.
    • TestSimulatePinnedChangedFunction runs a real project simulate of the embedded-function fixture. The cluster's Function of that name has a different digest, so the build marks it changed. A Manual XR pinned to a revision that calls it is rendered against that revision. With a Composition that doesn't call it, the XR stays deferred. There is no test-only hook in Hooks.
    • A pinned composite resource's detail reads rendered against pinned revision <rev> with the changed functions. This changes project simulate's detail too (previously with the project's functions).
    • A failed run wraps its error as cannot simulate Compositions. project simulate keeps cannot simulate project.
  • Changes to project simulate: its help now points at crossplane composition simulate for Composition files without a project. The design doc says composition simulate is part of this stack.

I have:

Unit tests, the integration suite (nix run .#integration-test) and ./nix.sh run .#lint pass.

Inputs.Compositions simulates Composition files without a project build:
ImageConfigs come from --image-configs, the xpkg client is made on first
use, and without --providers each composite resource's providers start
as it is simulated.

…ction test

Restore TestCompDiffIntegration, the CompPlanText and CompPlanJSON cases
of TestSimulatePlanOutput and the testdata they read. Rewrite
TestSimulatePinnedChangedFunction as a `project simulate` test on the
embedded fixture: it pins an XR to its Composition's revision and checks
that a revision calling a changed function is rendered, and one that does
not stays deferred. The harness parses a composition.Cmd alongside the
project one and runs CompositionDiffTest cases as `composition simulate`
with -f per file. Restore the testutils colour and ANSI helpers the
Composition cases compare output with.

The restored cases start their clusters with integration.Start, with the
case's testdata/<type>/crds as CRDDirs, rather than the harness's deleted
copy of it. leastPrivilegeRules, the RBAC two of them run under, lives
beside TestCompDiffIntegration.

Make the shared Docker error, --image-configs help and pinned-revision
detail command-neutral, and reword two integration test comments.

composition simulate fell back to ./crossplane-project.yaml for
imageConfigs, so a run inside a project directory got rewrites it wasn't
asked for, or failed on a project file it wasn't given. Non-project runs
now take imageConfigs only from --image-configs; project mode is
unchanged. The shared help and the flag help say so.

No Composition or project case in this layer sets or calls these, so
they are dead here. The xr simulate layer restores them.

Removed identifiers:
- IntegrationTestCase fields in integration_test.go:
  functionCredentials, awaitAdmissionDenialFor,
  assertDeterministicAcrossRuns, and their branches (the
--function-credentials argv, the integration.AwaitAdmissionDenial call and the
  second determinism run)
- integration_simulate_harness_test.go: simArgs.FunctionCredentials and
its --function-credentials argv translation in simulateArgv

Drop the orphaned TestDiffIntegration doc comment, say that runSimulate
runs composition simulate, and make simulateArgv fail on a test type it
has no command for instead of defaulting to project simulate. Hooks'
doc now names any simulate command.

Unexport classify and rejectInput, which nothing outside the package
calls; Class stays exported since LoadInputs takes it. Say in the
composition simulate -f help that it takes a directory, as the loader
does, and point a rejected List input (as kubectl get -o yaml writes)
at unwrapping its items.

Walkthrough

Adds crossplane composition simulate for Composition files and connects it to the shared simulation runner. The change also adds exact input loading, integration coverage, and structured assertions for simulation results.

Changes: Composition Simulation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Exact Composition input loading
pkg/load/loader.go, pkg/load/loader_test.go, internal/simulate/inputs.go, internal/simulate/inputs_test.go, cmd/crossplane/project/simulate.go, cmd/crossplane/project/simulate_test.go
The loader supports exact paths and optional exclusion of Composition pipeline inputs. Simulation input validation rejects unsupported resources and duplicate Composition names. Project simulation also rejects duplicate Composition names.
Direct Composition simulation
internal/simulate/run.go, internal/simulate/run_test.go, internal/simulate/flags.go, internal/simulate/help/imageconfigs.md, internal/simulate/report.go, internal/simulate/report_test.go, internal/simulate/result_test.go
The shared runner accepts direct Composition inputs. It selects providers from explicit manifests, project dependencies, or per-composite discovery. For non-project runs, it loads ImageConfigs only from the flag.
Composition simulate command and integration coverage
cmd/crossplane/composition/*, cmd/crossplane/project/integration_simulate_harness_test.go, cmd/crossplane/project/integration_plan_output_test.go, cmd/crossplane/project/help/simulate.md, design/one-pager-cli-simulate.md
Adds the command, input and validation flags, help, and examples. Integration tests exercise Composition simulation plans and pinned-revision behavior. The project help points users to the Composition command for file-based simulation.
Structured simulation test assertions
internal/simulate/simtest/*, internal/diff/testutils/utils.go
Adds builders and JSON assertions for composition impacts, composites, downstream plans, field values, warnings, errors, revisions, and dry-run results. Tests cover the assertions and ANSI-insensitive output comparison helpers.

Add directory and stdin pipeline-input coverage.

LoadInputs relies on WithoutPipelineInputs() for every input mode. Add a directory case and a -f - case that each load a Composition containing a pipeline input and assert that only the Composition is returned. This will detect regressions where file loading preserves the option but directory or stdin loading does not.

Test provider precedence when a project exists

A project-first implementation could pass every current case. Add a case with both inputs to protect the precedence. Thanks!

Review comments at @cmd/crossplane/composition/simulate.go:
- Line 55: Update the input-loading flow around simulate.LoadInputs to respond
to sigCtx cancellation, so an interrupt terminates a blocked stdin read on the
first signal. Use the cancellation-aware input mechanism supported by this code
path, preserving existing input parsing and error handling.

Review comments at @internal/simulate/inputs.go:
- Around line 100-105: Update LoadInputs to detect repeated Composition names
among the loaded resources and reject them before returning inputs for
simulation, using the existing error path. Keep non-Composition resources and
unique Compositions unchanged.

Review comments at @internal/simulate/simtest/plan_assertions.go:
- Around line 370-372: Update the warning-count assertions in the visible
assertion block so `noWarnings` independently requires `len(got)` to be zero,
even when `want` contains expected warnings. Keep the expected-count comparison
limited to cases where `want` is non-empty, preserving the existing
warning-message diagnostics.
- Around line 648-651: Update the field-value lookup around the `len(rel)` check
so child paths can be resolved from an enclosing change value when the plan
records the whole object, such as `spec.config`. Preserve existing exact-path
lookup behavior, and traverse the enclosing value to retrieve the requested
child before applying `WithField`.
- Around line 290-292: Update the WithField assertion path and valueAt handling
to track whether the field exists separately from its value. Make an expected
nil match only a present field explicitly set to null, while keeping omitted,
unknown, sensitive, and unresolved values distinguishable and preserving their
existing assertion behavior.
- Around line 290-292: Update the value comparison used by WithField and
WithFieldChange to compare numerically equal values across Go numeric types,
including numbers nested in maps and slices. Preserve existing comparison
behavior for nonnumeric values and ensure both assertions use the same recursive
comparison.
- Around line 365-368: Update assertWarnings to match each expected warning
against a distinct entry in got, so overlapping substring expectations cannot be
satisfied by the same warning. Ensure unrelated warnings do not compensate for
an unmatched expectation, while preserving the function’s existing count and
noWarnings checks where applicable.

Review comments at @internal/simulate/simtest/structured_assertions.go:
- Around line 138-140: Update WithDryRunPerformed and the corresponding
skip-dry-run setter to reject conflicting expectations for the same
ResourceExpectation regardless of call order, rather than allowing assertDryRun
to pass when dryRun is absent; add tests covering both setter orders.

Make stdin loading respond to cancellation.

If a pipe remains open after Ctrl-C, LoadInputs can stay blocked and the command requires a second interrupt to exit. Could we make input loading respond to sigCtx so the first interrupt terminates the command? Thanks!

Review comment at @cmd/crossplane/composition/simulate.go at line 55:
Update the input-loading flow around simulate.LoadInputs to respond to sigCtx
cancellation, so an interrupt terminates a blocked stdin read on the first
signal. Use the cancellation-aware input mechanism supported by this code path,
preserving existing input parsing and error handling.

Agreed that a blocked -f - read needs a second Ctrl+C: YamlStream(os.Stdin) doesn't take a context. That's how pkg/load's StdinLoader already reads stdin on main, for every command that takes -f -. This PR only adds the pipeline-input option to it. Making stdin reads context-aware means changing the Loader API for all of those callers, which is out of scope here. As you rated it, a poor tradeoff for this PR. Leaving it as is.

@jcogilvie Thanks for the context. I agree that the existing stdin behavior is broader than this PR. I won’t ask for a change here.

Would you like me to open a follow-up issue for cancellation of blocked stdin reads?

Comment thread internal/simulate/inputs.go Resolved
jcogilvie and others added 4 commits November 6, 2026 14:47
composition simulate and project simulate said, near the end of their
own text, that they need the create and patch verbs. That's easy to miss
and surprising, since the commands don't change the cluster: they check
each rendered resource with a server-side dry run, and Kubernetes
authorizes a dry-run request like a real one. Move it to an Important
callout right after the summary, with that reason, the way render leads
with its Docker requirement.

@coderabbitai on the two nitpicks in your review of 64a0fd3:

  • internal/simulate/inputs_test.go:109-113: added CompositionDirectoryPipelineInput in 3049ba9. I skipped the stdin case, since it means swapping os.Stdin in a test, and the file and directory cases already go through the same WithoutPipelineInputs option.
  • internal/simulate/run_test.go:860-863: added FlagWithProject in 3049ba9, so --providers has to win over the project's provider dependencies.

@jcogilvie Thanks for addressing these.

  • CompositionDirectoryPipelineInput checks that the directory input returns the Composition without a separate pipeline input resource.
  • FlagWithProject checks that providerSource selects --providers when a project is present.
  • Skipping the stdin case is reasonable here. The stdin loader passes the same option to the shared parser, though the stdin-specific path remains untested.

I inspected the code at 1e5b5902; I did not run the tests.

Nit: should this maybe be InputClass? simulate.Class is pretty generic.

In crossplane resource simulate, the equivalent -f flag takes a comma-separated list of files. I don't have a strong preference for whether we do comma-separated or repeated flags, but it would be nice to be consistent across the simulate commands.

I would think about replacing the Class machinery with a validate func(*un.Unstructured) error closure passed by the commands to LoadInputs. That keeps the knowledge of what each command accepts/needs in the commands rather than spreading it through the codebase, and generally feels a little simpler, without losing the value of the shared loader.

Could we have Run fill this in appropriately, rather than defaulting it here?

LoadInputs takes a validate closure instead of a Class, so each command
owns what it accepts.

planOptions uses pkgs.Client as given.

A marker inside an assembled map or slice was compared after JSON
normalisation, so an expected literal "(known after apply)" could match it.

planOptions now creates pkgs.Client and writes it back into the Packages it receives. That is a hidden side effect on an input. Could we build the client in Run’s non-project branch (line ~566), next to where Packages{ICs: ics} is built? Then Packages is fully set up in one place. If the lazy creation exists to avoid a client when Hooks.Router is set ?

Nit: ics, err := ... shadows the outer err inside the else. It is harmless today, but ics, ferr :=, or declaring ics before the branch, avoids the shadow.

Nit: instead of passing project bool only to pick the wrap message, diffCompositions could take the message (or a noun) directly. That keeps the bool from spreading further when xr simulate arrives.

ponytail: looks like a leftover marker. Did you mean TODO: / NOTE:? ?

// current simulate surface, or "" when they can. The runner calls it

simulateGap always returns "" and ignores both arguments. If no gaps are left, please remove it and the call site.

The comment says json/yaml are parsed as simulate.ProjectResult, but these are now composition simulate cases. Is the type name still right, or should the comment (or the type) be renamed?

The Composition integration cases (about 2.8k lines plus testdata/comp, testdata/diff) now live in the project package and drive composition simulate. This makes project tests import cmd/crossplane/composition. Could they move to cmd/crossplane/composition (follow-up is fine)? Then each command owns its own integration suite.

regexp.MustCompile runs on every call. Please move the pattern to a package-level var ?

With --skip-plan nothing fetches packages, and --cache-dir is already
reported as ignored, so don't create (and fail on) the cache directory.
