fix(simulate): give each run its own diff servers and reclaim dead runs - #500
Fixes#490, together with #498 (merged). #498 fixed crossplane composition render and crossplane operation render; this PR fixes the diff servers that crossplane resource simulate starts.
Diff server containers were always named by package digest, and a run reused any container with that name. With the default Remove policy, two concurrent resource simulate runs on the same provider shared one container. The first to exit removed it under the other, whose plans then failed with connection refused. A run that was killed also left its servers running for good.
Per-run names. Only a server with simulate.crossplane.io/runtime-docker-cleanup: Orphan keeps the deterministic name crossplane-diff-server-<digest12>, so runs that ask to keep a server still find and share it, and no run removes it. Every other server gets a random 8-hex suffix, so no other run finds it by name. Two Orphan runs that race to create the same server share the winner's container instead of failing on the name conflict.
One server per package in a run. Inputs that resolve to the same package digest, such as two Provider manifests naming one package by tag and by digest, share one server, as long as their cleanup policy, publish address and target also match. Before, the deterministic name made them share by accident; the per-run suffix would otherwise have started one container each.
Crash reclamation. The diff server Manager takes part in the same lease mechanism feat(render): add a run-scoped render Session and reclaim crashed runs #498 adds for render, through containerruntime.Run. With WithLeaseDir it leases a generated session ID before starting its first container, reclaims what dead render and simulate runs left, labels its containers with the run ID, and releases the lease in Stop. The lease is kept for a later run when a container couldn't be removed, including one created by a start that then failed. A run of only Development providers touches no Docker and takes no lease. resource simulate passes containerruntime.DefaultLeaseDir().
Interrupted startup.resource simulate now defers stopping the servers before starting them, so a Ctrl+C during startup stops what had started.
One Docker client.diffserver.WithDockerClient now takes the container client plus containerruntime.RunClient, so one caller-supplied client serves everything the Manager does on Docker, as with render.WithDockerClient. The Manager never closes it.
Backward compatibility.resource simulate is unreleased. No flags, annotations or label keys change. internal/diffserver.WithDockerClient takes a wider interface; it's internal. User-visible behaviour changes:
Kept servers are never removed by a later run. Before, any later run without the Orphan annotation reused a kept server and then removed it on exit. Now no run removes an Orphan server, including a later run without the annotation, which starts its own server instead and pays full startup. Kept servers stay until you remove them; the help gives the docker rm command. This is deliberate: a non-Orphan run removing a kept server would pull it out from under any Orphan run sharing it, which is the cross-run teardown this PR fixes.
Default server names gain a random 8-hex suffix.
resource simulate writes lease files and reclaims what dead render and simulate runs left behind. A supplied --session-id isn't leased, and that flag's help now says so.
The default render.crossplane.io/session label is now a per-run 16-hex ID, no longer shared with render in the same process.
The resource simulate help, the render help's crash-cleanup paragraph and design/one-pager-cli-simulate.md are updated to match.
Testing. Unit tests run under -race and check outcomes on fake Docker clients, not call sequences. In internal/diffserver: RemoveNeverReusesContainerByName, ConcurrentRemoveRunsDoNotShareAServer, ConcurrentOrphanRunsShareTheWinnersServer, OrphanCleanupLeavesContainersRunning, InputsOfOnePackageShareAServer, and TestManagerLease (LeasesTheRunUntilACleanStop, KeepsTheLeaseWhenAContainerIsLeft, ReclaimsDeadRunsBeforeStarting, SuppliedIDIsNotLeased, DevelopmentOnlyRunTakesNoLease). There's no real-Docker diff server test, because it needs a provider image; the lease and reclaim themselves are covered against real Docker by #498's integration tests. ./nix.sh run .#test, ./nix.sh run .#lint (0 issues) and ./nix.sh run .#integration-test pass.

This error message is specific to render, but find is now also used by simulate with Domain: DomainSimulate. Simulate has no runtime-docker-name annotation and no “Functions”. This path can actually be hit in simulate: an older CLI that crashed could leave a running crossplane-diff-server- labelled cleanup=Remove. A new Orphan run would then refuse it with this text. Could the caller pass in the hint, or could you split the message per domain?

his changes behavior. Before, “any later run without the annotation cleans them up”. Now Orphan diff servers are never removed by any run. I think the new behavior is fine, but please mention it in the PR description or release notes, because people who relied on the old auto-cleanup will now collect containers.

With the random suffix, two inputs that share an image digest in one run now get two containers. Before, they shared one through the deterministic name. Is that possible today, for example with two Provider manifests that use the same package? If so, should the manager dedupe by digest before starting?
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
sweepNetworks lists both domains on every clean exit. That means 2 container lists and 2 network lists on every render run, even when nothing is left over. Render only creates DomainRender networks, so could Release/sweepNetworks take the domain as an argument?

reapTimeout covers all dead runs together, and each stop can use StopGracePeriod (3s). A few dead runs with Stop-policy containers will run out of the budget and spill over into the next run. That’s acceptable, but please say so in the comment, or apply the timeout per dead run.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Nit: the comment wraps badly (“…only when WithLeaseDir is set; a supplied ID is used as is and never leased, since other processes may” runs past the line length).

context.WithoutCancel also drops the deadline, so rt.Stop has no upper bound if the Docker daemon hangs. The network cleanup and the sweep already have their own timeouts. Should the runtime stops get one too?
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Each request in Stop already has its own deadline: ContainerStop has StopTimeout and ContainerRemove has RemoveTimeout, tested in runtime_docker_test.go.
Other runtimes' stops do nothing so a hung daemon can't hold Close past those.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Acquire runs while holding m.mu and can take up to reapTimeout. It’s fine at startup, but it blocks Servers() and Stop() for that time. A short comment saying this is intentional would help.

len(errs) == 0 also counts connection-close errors, not only container teardown errors, so the lease is sometimes kept when nothing actually leaked. Being conservative here is okay. Just mentioning it in case that wasn’t intended.
The change adds run-scoped render sessions and Docker leases. It adds recovery of resources from interrupted runs, policy-based named-container reuse, and per-run diff-server isolation for simulate. Generated session IDs are leased; supplied IDs are not.

Summary
Container identity and reuse internal/containerruntime/container.go, internal/containerruntime/containerruntime.go, internal/containerruntime/container_test.go, pkg/render/runtime_docker.go, pkg/render/runtime_docker_test.go
Container runtime configuration now includes a domain for named-container reuse. Reuse checks container state, session labels, and cleanup policy. Generated session IDs use 16 lowercase hexadecimal characters.
Run leases and dead-run recovery internal/containerruntime/run.go, internal/containerruntime/lock_*.go, internal/containerruntime/*_test.go
Run leases protect live resources. Later runs reclaim resources from dead runs according to cleanup policy and remove eligible leases. Network cleanup preserves networks attached to kept containers.
render.Session manages setup, function runtimes, rendering, cleanup, and lease release. Render commands now use the session, and Docker clients can be injected into the render engine and container runner.
Diff-server isolation and simulate integration internal/diffserver/manager.go, internal/diffserver/manager_test.go, cmd/crossplane/simulate/simulate.go, cmd/crossplane/simulate/help/simulate.md, design/one-pager-cli-simulate.md
Diff-server managers use run leases. Non-Orphan containers receive per-run names, while Orphan containers keep digest-based names. Simulate commands configure the lease directory and defer server cleanup before startup.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 63a4a
The change isolates simulate diff servers per run and reclaims containers from dead runs, and the earlier correctness concerns appear fixed. Two narrow edge cases remain: a failed diff-server start is not retried by inputs that shared its claim, and runs that share a supplied session ID share containers. Neither blocks merging, but the owner should be aware of both.

Explanation
The title is 71 characters, under the 72-character limit, and it names the change: per-run diff servers for simulate and reclaiming dead runs. It matches the main changes in the raw summary, including per-run naming in diffserver/manager.go and lease reclamation through containerruntime. It also follows the conventional fix(scope) prefix.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
[ #490 ] The changes implement the relevant render and simulate requirements. pkg/render.Session owns setup, function runtimes, cleanup, and leases. The render commands use this session without changing exported declarations. containerruntime.Run reclaims dead labeled resources, preserves live and Orphan resources, bounds cleanup, and retains leases after incomplete cleanup. Diff servers use per-run names unless they use Orphan, and matching inputs share one server within a run. Startup cleanup, supplied-session behavior, development-only behavior, and shared Docker-client behavior have targeted tests. The changes also preserve public render entry points and document the cleanup behavior.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The whole pull request stays within [ #490 ]. The shared container-runtime and render-session changes support dead-run reclamation, concurrent-run isolation, resource ownership, or the requested multi-render lifecycle. The diff-server changes support the simulate bug named in [ #490 ]. Documentation and tests verify these behaviors. No change targets the excluded project build leaks or the long-lived project run control plane. No unrelated change is demonstrated.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description is specific and on-topic. It explains the per-run diff server names, Orphan server reuse, one server per package within a run, crash reclamation through the lease mechanism, interrupted startup handling, the shared Docker client, backward-compatibility notes, and the tests run. It maps directly to the changeset in internal/diffserver, pkg/render, containerruntime, and the simulate command.
Full details: Breaking Changes
Explanation
The standing failure remains valid. cmd/crossplane/simulate/simulate.go now enables the leased manager and changes cleanup registration, while cmd/crossplane/simulate/help/simulate.md documents changed behavior: non-Orphan servers no longer reuse or remove kept Orphan servers, and crashed-run resources are reclaimed. This is a user-visible behavior change caused by the PR. The command fields and flags were not removed, renamed, or made newly required, and no apis/** files changed. The prior finding states that the PR has no breaking-change label.
Resolution
Add the breaking-change label to the pull request. If this behavior change is not intended, restore the prior diff-server reuse and cleanup behavior while retaining crash reclamation and concurrent-run isolation.
Full details: Feature Gate Requirement
Explanation
The pull request introduces significant behavior without a feature flag. cmd/crossplane/render/xr/cmd.go:236-244 and cmd/crossplane/render/op/cmd.go:176-184 unconditionally create render.NewSession with containerruntime.DefaultLeaseDir(), enabling lease acquisition, dead-run reclamation, and session cleanup. cmd/crossplane/simulate/simulate.go:158-164 likewise enables lease behavior for simulation. The render commands are GA or hidden GA aliases without a maturity tag, and the existing alpha maturity on resource simulate does not gate the new render behavior. The PR adds no feature-flag implementation or disabled lifecycle path. No apis/** files changed.
Resolution
Add a feature flag for the render session and reclamation behavior. Check the flag before using render.NewSession, lease acquisition, dead-run reclamation, and related cleanup. Preserve the existing lifecycle when the flag is disabled. Expose and document the flag through CLI configuration, and add tests for both enabled and disabled paths.

Add a live-run simulate server to the reclaim fixture.
Thanks for adding the reclaim test. It covers the dead-run path well. The fixture has no simulate container that belongs to a live run, so a reclaim that drops the session selector for the simulate domain still passes: it removes only dead-server. A live-run container labelled with a different run ID makes that regression visible, because the weakened query would also remove it. This guards the live-run protection that #490 requires.

@coderabbitai On the internal/diffserver/manager_test.go:739 nitpick: Added, in the simulate commit: the reclaim fixture now lists another run's Remove server, and the test still requires that only the dead run's server is removed.
Could this case compare the returned error with the injected removal error? The current boolean check also passes if Stop returns an unrelated error. That can hide a regression in removal-error propagation. Use an args/want case with cmp.Diff and cmpopts.EquateErrors(). Thank you for covering the lease-retention path. As per path instructions, use the “args/want pattern” and “cmp.Diff with cmpopts.EquateErrors() for error testing.” (raw.githubusercontent.com)

@jcogilvie Thanks for the update. I checked ReclaimsDeadRunsBeforeStarting in internal/diffserver/manager_test.go. The fixture now includes another run’s Remove server, and the assertion requires that only dead-server is removed. This addresses the nitpick. I did not run the test.
If you found this review helpful, would you consider giving us a shout-out on X?
Diff server containers were always named by package digest, and a run
reused any container with that name. With the default Remove policy, two
concurrent `resource simulate` runs on the same provider shared one
container, and the first to exit removed it under the other, whose plans
then failed with connection refused.
Now only an Orphan container keeps the deterministic name crossplane-
diff-server-<digest12>, so runs that ask to keep a server still find and
share it, and none removes it. The container sets its label domain, so
concurrent Orphan runs that race to create it share the winner's rather
than failing on the name conflict. Every other container gets a random
8-hex suffix, so no other run finds it by name.
The Manager also takes part in crash reclamation through
containerruntime.Run, as render's Session does: with WithLeaseDir it
leases a generated session ID before starting its first container (a run
of only Development providers touches no Docker and takes no lease),
reclaims what dead runs left, labels its containers with the run ID, and
releases the lease in Stop. resource simulate defers Stop before
starting servers, so an interrupted startup stops what it started. The
lease file is kept for a later run when a container could not be
removed, including one created by a Start that then failed. A supplied
--session-id is not leased, as in render. resource simulate passes
containerruntime.DefaultLeaseDir().
WithDockerClient now takes a DockerClient, the container client plus
RunClient, and the Manager's Run uses it too, so one caller-supplied
client serves everything the Manager does on Docker. The Manager never
closes it.
Behaviour change (resource simulate is unreleased): a run without the
Orphan annotation no longer cleans up a server an earlier run kept. The
help now gives the docker rm filter for kept servers, describes
reclamation, and the render help names simulate among the runs that
reclaim.

resource simulateis unreleased. No flags, annotations or label keys change.internal/diffserver.WithDockerClienttakes a wider interface; it's internal. User-visible behaviour changes:Orphanannotation reused a kept server and then removed it on exit. Now no run removes anOrphanserver, including a later run without the annotation, which starts its own server instead and pays full startup. Kept servers stay until you remove them; the help gives thedocker rmcommand. This is deliberate: a non-Orphanrun removing a kept server would pull it out from under anyOrphanrun sharing it, which is the cross-run teardown this PR fixes.resource simulatewrites lease files and reclaims what dead render and simulate runs left behind. A supplied--session-idisn't leased, and that flag's help now says so.render.crossplane.io/sessionlabel is now a per-run 16-hex ID, no longer shared with render in the same process. The
resource simulatehelp, the render help's crash-cleanup paragraph anddesign/one-pager-cli-simulate.mdare updated to match.Testing. Unit tests run under
-raceand check outcomes on fake Docker clients, not call sequences. Ininternal/diffserver:RemoveNeverReusesContainerByName,ConcurrentRemoveRunsDoNotShareAServer,ConcurrentOrphanRunsShareTheWinnersServer,OrphanCleanupLeavesContainersRunning,InputsOfOnePackageShareAServer, andTestManagerLease(LeasesTheRunUntilACleanStop,KeepsTheLeaseWhenAContainerIsLeft,ReclaimsDeadRunsBeforeStarting,SuppliedIDIsNotLeased,DevelopmentOnlyRunTakesNoLease). There's no real-Docker diff server test, because it needs a provider image; the lease and reclaim themselves are covered against real Docker by #498's integration tests../nix.sh run .#test,./nix.sh run .#lint(0 issues) and./nix.sh run .#integration-testpass.Related: #498, #436, #486, #487.
