Release note: Changed: Setup helps you pick ffmpeg.exe and a copy of your dod folder for movies, Launch Game shows in every build, and the Clean clips profile hides more.

Last fixes from testing 0.2.0-6 before the 0.2.0 release.

Setup

  • FFmpeg page: a fresh install's FFmpeg setting is the bare name ffmpeg, which an unzipped FFmpeg is never on the Windows PATH for, so Point HLAE at FFmpeg failed with "Could not resolve an FFmpeg" and no way to pick one. The page now has an ffmpeg.exe row (Browse, Get FFmpeg), offers Use HLAE's FFmpeg when HLAE has its own copy, asks for a pick before the HLAE link, and counts as done only when both HLAE and DoD Studio have an FFmpeg. The error names FFmpeg Override Path, and a bare ffmpeg reads as "no override" rather than "there is no file at ffmpeg".
  • First page: a copy of the dod folder for movies (dod_movies, in the same Half-Life folder) is highly recommended rather than a whole second Half-Life copy, with a Game folder list on the page (the same setting as Configuration's Game Folder). The note appears only when Steam's own Half-Life would start with its own dod; Configuration's Half-Life note follows the same rule. Both engine builds are supported; the 25th Anniversary build gives the best results (4 GB of memory instead of 2 GB, higher engine limits, the fixes DoD Studio carries). How a pre-Anniversary dod behaves in a 25th Anniversary Half-Life is [R&D] Does a pre-Anniversary dod folder play in a 25th Anniversary Half-Life, and the other way round? #909.
  • Long paths wrap between folders instead of scrolling.

Capture page

  • Launch Game shows in every build, named "Launch Game" (no "(HLAE)"), beside Launch Preview, with a tooltip saying previews, reviews and batches use the open game.
  • Generate All Previews is gone (button, command, strings): Launch Preview plays the demo in place or patches a preview on demand ([R&D] Retire demo patching: the hook DLL runs the schedule, Studio sends it over the pipe #434).
  • Initial Delay hides while Seek Between Clips is on: the hook waits for the demo to load and moves to clip 1 itself, so the value isn't used.
  • New-install timing: pre-roll 5 s (was 2), post-roll 1 s (was 0.6). Saved values are kept.

Configuration

  • GoldSrc Hooks DLL override: only a debug build or one made on this PC (its source tree is readable, as for the window title's branch) shows and uses it. An installed release always runs the hook DLL it ships with, whatever settings.json holds, so a test DLL saved while developing can't apply out of sight. Enforced in the backend (updater_manager::allowed_hook_dll, at the capture payload, launch_config and the preview env); the row asks hook_dll_override_allowed. Nothing in settings.json is cleared, so the shared file keeps the dev setting.

Clean clips profile (new installs, and installs that haven't had it added yet)

Docs: docs/features.md, docs/vac_safety.md (Launch Game's name).

Tests

  • cargo test -p desktop-studio --locked: 166 passed. rustfmt (1.98.1) clean; clippy (1.98.1, -D warnings) clean for desktop-studio.
  • npm run test:unit: 604 passed (new: Setup's FFmpeg done rule, the dod-folder note rule).
  • CI=1 npx playwright test: 315 passed (new: Setup's FFmpeg step for a fresh install and for HLAE's own copy, the game folder pick).
  • Not run in the app yet: the 0.2.0-7 experimental build is the check.

…AE's own

A fresh install's FFmpeg setting is the bare name ffmpeg, which an unzipped FFmpeg isn't on PATH for, so Point HLAE at FFmpeg failed with no way to pick one. The step now shows DoD Studio's ffmpeg.exe with Browse and Get FFmpeg, offers HLAE's bundled copy, asks for a pick before the link, and counts as done only when both have one. The error names FFmpeg Override Path, and a bare ffmpeg reads as no override.

…ommended, not a whole Half-Life copy

The step now picks hl.exe and the game folder (Configuration's Game Folder list), explains copying dod to dod_movies in the same Half-Life folder, and notes it only when Steam's own Half-Life would start with its own dod. Configuration's Half-Life note follows the same rule.

…ws is gone

A game Studio started is reused by previews and reviews, and one started with other settings is offered a restart (#666), so Launch Game no longer hides outside local builds. It sits beside Launch Preview. Generate All Previews only pre-patched preview demos, which Launch Preview now makes on demand or skips by playing the demo in place (#434); its button, command and strings are removed.

…ile one is set

It's for testing a hook build. A release build hides the row when empty, and keeps showing a path saved earlier so it can be seen and cleared.

ds_view_use_cl_bob stays 0 until DoD's own bob model (#904) is in.

… Delay hides while Seek Between Clips is on; pre-roll 5 s, post-roll 1 s

Clean clips: ds_spec_hide_text 1, ds_hud_hide_center_text 1, ds_hud_overview_hide_speaker 0, ds_view_hide_screen_shake 1. Initial Delay only applies to patched demos; the hook waits for the demo itself. New installs start with a 5 s pre-roll and 1 s post-roll. Also rustfmt for the lib.rs import list.

…s for builds made here

The GoldSrc Hooks DLL override applies only in a debug build or one built on this PC, enforced where the launch config is made, and its row shows only there. Nothing in settings.json is cleared, so the dev setting in the shared file survives.
