feat(webview): per-view ack, history and profile restore writes (N5, split 5/5 of #1546) - #2237
Split unit N5 of #1546 (per-view ack, history and profile restore writes)
Final unit of the split plan (tracking issue: fork issue 41), on top of N4 (#2236). Completes the pure F1a content.
Scope
postMessageToWebview posts synchronously without awaiting the webview ack, with the per-view state ack wired through the message listener.
History restore (createTaskWithHistoryItemUnlocked, updateTaskHistory) and mode switch (handleModeSwitchUnlocked) keep the per-view buffer/persisted entry authoritative.
Profile activation/delete re-pins the view-local state; handleZooCodeCallback and dispose clean up per-view state without leaking another view's entry.
Focused tests for ack ordering/logging, restored-mode validation and profile-sync behaviour.
Split unit N2 of Zoo-Code-Org#1546: viewStates read/write queue, claim rekey, prune, clear, load/save and export/import sanitization on top of N1 identity. Buffer/mutation/history content remains for N3.
N2 spec now includes the N1 identity tests plus the persistence/load/prune/rekey/export-import coverage; the setValues buffer test moves to the buffer unit.
Final split unit N5: non-awaiting postMessageToWebview with view-state ack, history restore via createTaskWithHistoryItemUnlocked/updateTaskHistory, profile activation/delete re-pin, handleModeSwitchUnlocked and dispose cleanup. Completes the pure F1a content.

New Features
Mode and selected provider profile are now saved independently for each view, so switching views preserves their individual selections.
Returning to a task restores its mode and associated provider profile for that view.
Improvements
Settings imports continue to apply supported settings while ignoring saved per-view selections; exports omit those selections.
Updates to modes and provider profiles are more reliable when changes happen quickly or a view is reset.
The extension adds persisted, claim-bound view state for mode and provider selections. ClineProvider loads and updates those values across task-history and profile workflows. Global-state writes now guard against stale cache restoration after failures or resets. Webview message dispatch no longer waits for renderer acknowledgement.
Per-key write generations prevent failed writes from restoring stale cached values after a newer write or reset.
View registration and state loading src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts, src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts, src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.sticky-mode.spec.ts, src/eslint-suppressions.json
ClineProvider validates view IDs and claims, persists and loads selections, and handles ownership, pruning, and asynchronous load cases.
Task and profile workflows src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts, src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts, src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.sticky-mode.spec.ts, src/core/config/ProviderSettingsManager.ts, src/core/config/__tests__/ProviderSettingsManager.spec.ts, src/eslint-suppressions.json
Task restoration, mode changes, and profile operations update view-local state. Missing profiles use a typed error, and tests cover profile updates, deletion, reset, and persistence failures.

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review 623a7
Resolve the mode-selection and restoration failures before merging: new tasks can use another view’s mode, restart loses per-view selections, and newly supplied custom modes can be ignored. Persistence failures can also leave shared and per-view settings inconsistent.

Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
The changed path exposes provider credentials through the public configuration API. activateProviderProfileUnlocked receives the full profile, including apiKey, and writes it to viewLocalState.apiConfiguration (src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:2844-2862). The changed getValues() returns that overlay (ClineProvider.ts:4077-4079). API.getConfiguration() removes only top-level secret keys and does not inspect nested apiConfiguration fields (src/extension/api.ts:625-629). A caller can activate an Anthropic profile with apiKey and then receive the key under apiConfiguration.
Resolution
Keep credential-bearing apiConfiguration out of ClineProvider.getValues() and all configuration API results. Return only non-secret settings, or recursively redact every secret field in nested profile objects before API.getConfiguration() returns them. Add a regression test that activates a profile with an API key and asserts that getConfiguration() contains no nested credentials.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
Three changed persistence paths still permit inconsistent state. savePersistedViewState commits viewStates at ClineProvider.ts:656, then postViewStateClaimToWebview voids postMessageToWebview at :719-720; postMessageToWebview also does not await the renderer promise at :2027-2047. If the webview closes or the promise rejects, the stored claim is not delivered, so the next launch cannot prove ownership and cannot restore the persisted selection. Profile activation still runs parallel writes at :2625-2638 and :2853-2865; a failed per-view write only rolls back the shared current-profile value, while list, mode mapping, provider settings, or the saved profile can remain committed. Profile deletion now deletes the secret first at :2698-2707; if the list write at :2715 or later re-pinning writes fail, the secret and global/view state diverge without compensation.
Resolution
Make claim delivery an awaited, retryable operation, or revoke/mark the stored claim when delivery fails. Make profile activation transactional: sequence writes or compensate every committed list, current-profile, mode-mapping, provider-settings, saved-profile, and per-view value when any write fails. Make profile deletion transactional or restore the secret and prior list/selection on later failure. Add failure tests for disposal during claim delivery and for each activation and deletion write failing after earlier writes succeed.

Explanation
The description explains the scope, exclusions, test evidence, and merge order. It does not follow the required template and omits the Related GitHub Issue, Test Procedure, Pre-Submission Checklist, Visual Snapshots, Documentation Updates, and Get in Touch sections.
Resolution
Rewrite the description using the repository template. Add an approved issue link, repeatable test steps and environment details, the completed checklist, the documentation impact, and the required contributor contact information.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
Focused coverage remains incomplete for changed profile lifecycle behavior. ClineProvider.deleteProviderProfile now handles typed missing-profile cleanup, unexpected deletion errors, shared selection/config replacement, view-local pin and durable-state cleanup, and sibling live views (src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:2678-2788). The only direct test (ClineProvider.spec.ts:3173-3207) checks only survivor activation; it does not assert deletion, missing-profile handling, error propagation, view-pinned cleanup, or multiple views. handleZooCodeCallback now updates every existing Zoo Gateway profile through upsertProviderProfile, with active/inactive behavior at ClineProvider.ts:2997-3035, but the existing-profile callback test was removed and the remaining tests cover only creation and the outer failure path (ClineProvider.spec.ts:7057-7104). Lower-layer ProviderSettingsManager tests do not cover these ClineProvider integration branches.
Resolution
Add focused ClineProvider tests for active and view-pinned profile deletion, typed missing-profile and unexpected-error branches, shared/view-local and durable cleanup, and multiple live views. Add an existing-profile Zoo callback test with active and inactive profiles that verifies updated tokens, base URLs, and activation flags.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
A changed mode-switch path can continue after cancellation. handleModeSwitchUnlocked now awaits setValue("mode", newMode) (ClineProvider.ts:2343-2350), and setValue awaits the queued durable per-view write (savePersistedViewState). If that write stalls past PENDING_OPERATION_TIMEOUT_MS, enqueueProviderProfileMutation aborts the signal, but no signal check runs after setValue. The function then emits ModeChanged; with lockApiConfigAcrossModes enabled, it also posts state and returns through the workspace-lock branch (ClineProvider.ts:2352-2360). The later check at line 2366 cannot protect this branch. The checks around getModeConfigId and listConfig prevent the previously reported lookup case, but they do not cover this new per-view persistence await.
Resolution
Check signal?.aborted immediately after await this.setValue("mode", newMode) and before ModeChanged or any subsequent work. Guard the workspace-lock post, profile-list write, profile lookup, profile activation, mode-config write, and final webview post after every awaited operation. Add a regression test that stalls the per-view viewStates write beyond PENDING_OPERATION_TIMEOUT_MS, resolves it after timeout, and verifies that no post-cancellation mode event, profile mutation, or webview state dispatch occurs.

src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:2361 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚖️ Poor tradeoff
Move the TaskModeSwitched emit and _taskMode update after the per-view write.
TaskModeSwitched fires and _taskMode changes before the per-view setValue("mode") write. If that write fails, the error propagates, but the event and task mode stay changed. Observers see a rejected switch, and a reload restores the previous view selection. Reordering is not verified safe, so no diff is proposed. Check ModeChanged and profile-activation ordering before changing it.

src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:2898-2900 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | 🏗️ Heavy lift
Refresh sibling view buffers when a profile changes.
getConfiguration() reads the sidebar view's buffer through getValues(), and the buffer overrides the shared store. The buffer keeps a copy of profile P's apiConfiguration from loadViewState(). When another view activates or saves P, the sidebar buffer is not updated, so getConfiguration() can return the old P settings.
The sibling-refresh comments at src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:2898-2900 and in the activation branch of persistProviderProfile describe a refresh that the code does not perform. The save-only branch at lines 2702-2716 refreshes only the pinned current view.
Do not replace the buffer with shared-store values. Each view keeps its own pinned profile in that buffer. Instead, refresh the buffered apiConfiguration of every other live view that holds P when P is saved or activated. Alternatively, resolve the buffered profile from providerSettingsManager when getConfiguration() runs. Update the comments to match the behavior that is implemented. The comments that say getState() is shadowed are inaccurate, because getState() reads the shared store.

src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:4108-4110 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | 💤 Low value
Restored history mode is missing from the posted state during restore.
History restore now writes the mode only to the view buffer. Profile activation then posts state before the restored task exists, so the webview receives the pre-restore shared mode until a later post. The base wrote the shared mode before this post, so the stale window is new.
This changes only the posted mode field. getState() and profile binding stay unchanged, and an active task keeps precedence through currentTaskMode.

Assert the restored mode in the deleted-mode sticky-mode test.
The PR removes the only assertion on the fallback slug during history restore. The remaining test, should handle mode deletion between sessions, checks only that createTaskWithHistoryItem resolves and that handleModeSwitch is not called with "deleted-mode". If the fallback were removed, historyItem.mode would stay "deleted-mode" and this test would still pass.
The suggested assertion must not use defaultModeSlug as a bare identifier. The sticky-mode spec does not import it. Use the literal "code", which matches this spec's mocked defaultModeSlug.

src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:2343-2344 Minor · Data Integrity & Integration · Poor tradeoff
Gate the mode write on the mutation signal or handle the timed-out write.
When a mode switch times out, the queue advances. The setValue("mode", newMode) call at lines 2343-2344 can still persist the mode afterward. It is awaited before any signal?.aborted check, so the caller's timeout error does not stop it. The comment above the queue assignment at line 338 says each mutation checks its signal before writing state, and this write does not.
Rare: the timeout is 30 seconds, so the write must stay pending that long.
Possible direction
A fix needs a design decision. Options include running this mutation with runToCompletion so the timeout does not advance the queue, or compensating the write when the signal is aborted. Neither change is verified here.

- Around line 4096-4101: Update ClineProvider.setValues to catch failures from
contextProxy.setValues and restore the captured previousSharedValues before
propagating the error. Keep the existing per-view rollback behavior for failures
in _saveViewLocalStateFromMutation.
- Around line 4084-4093: Update the createTask flow so configuration.customModes
are registered before setValues validates configuration.mode, or include those
pending custom modes in setValues validation. Preserve rejection of modes that
are neither registered nor present in the incoming custom modes.
- Around line 5591-5595: Update the rollback guard in ClineProvider to compare
each key’s write generation rather than its current value, following the per-key
stateWriteGenerations approach in ContextProxy.updateGlobalState. Restore a
previous value only when no later write for that key has occurred, preserving
another provider’s successful selection.
- Around line 2644-2649: In the sibling-instance loop, after saving view-local
state, rebuild the task API handler when the sibling’s current task has
taskApiConfigName equal to name. Use updateTaskApiHandlerIfNeeded with
providerSettings and forceRebuild enabled, matching the non-activating branch’s
behavior.
- Around line 939-951: In loadViewState, assign loadedState.currentApiConfigName
only after providerSettingsManager.getProfile succeeds. Leave the pin unset when
the lookup fails so the view-local state falls back to the shared name, while
preserving the existing error logging.
- Around line 2745-2754: In deleteProviderProfile, retry
providerSettingsManager.activateProfile once if the initial update fails; if the
retry also fails, retain that error, finish the shared-state updates and call
postStateToWebview(), then throw an error reporting the incomplete
settings-manager update.
- Around line 2784-2786: Update deleteProviderProfile to re-pin other live
ClineProvider instances still pinned to the deleted profile when
survivingSettings exists: skip the current or disposed instance, then persist
each sibling’s view-local state with profileToActivate and survivingSettings.
- Around line 792-800: Complete the view-state claim round trip: store
viewStateId and viewStateClaim when the webview handles the viewStateClaim
message, include both values in webviewDidLaunch, and update the launch handler
to pass them to ClineProvider.setViewStateId.
- Around line 4077-4078: Update ClineProvider.getState() to resolve mode from
viewLocalState before shared context values, so new tasks and
activateProviderProfile use this view’s restored mode; preserve currentTaskMode
precedence for active tasks. Check all getState().mode callers, including
activateProviderProfile, for the intended behavior.

Minor comments:
Review comments at @src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:
- Around line 2343-2344: Update the mode-switch mutation around setValue("mode",
newMode) so a timed-out mutation cannot persist after the queue advances. Make
the write honor the mutation signal, or keep the mutation in the queue until the
write completes; preserve ordering with subsequent mutations.

Learning: For `src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts`, VS Code `onDidDispose` does not reliably distinguish an explicit user tab close from reload, shutdown, or extension deactivation. Do not use generic provider disposal as the signal to delete durable per-view `viewStates`; explicit close intent is required.

- register configuration.customModes before setValues validates the mode
- roll shared values back when a multi-key ContextProxy write rejects partway
- pin a persisted profile name only with the configuration it resolves to
- skip the buffer update when a reset ran during the durable save
- guard the shared rollback with per-key write generations, not values alone
- rebuild sibling task handlers when their pinned profile settings change
- ContextProxy tracks the last persisted value per key and rolls a failed write back to it, with a both-writes-reject test
- deleteProviderProfile retries the settings-manager name update and reports an incomplete repair after posting state
- deleteProviderProfile re-pins sibling views still buffered on the deleted profile
