feat(webview): per-view view-state identity and host-minted claim token (N1, split 1/3 of #1546) - #2226
Split unit N1 of #1546 (F1a — per-view view-state identity)
Part of the split plan recorded in the tracking issue (fork issue 41): #1546 mixed per-view identity, the durable viewStates pipeline, buffer/mutation behaviour, plus F0 (button targeting) and F3 (mode/profile write) content. This unit carries only the identity contract; F0 content stays in #1528 and F3 content in #1560.
Scope (contract point)
viewId (renderContext + per-instance counter) and viewStateId identity, including __proto__/non-string/oversized/live-claim guards in setViewStateId.
Host-minted claimToken binding: viewStateClaim/viewStateId message payloads, rebindUnboundViewStateEntry, postViewStateClaimToWebview, and the persisted viewStateSchema/viewStates record.
Claim-less legacy entries are adopted only through the re-bind path; a live or mismatched claim is refused.
Each webview saves and restores its own mode and selected provider profile, allowing separate views to retain different settings.
View settings can be restored when a view is reopened, while changes in one view remain separate from other views.
Bug Fixes
Deleting a provider configuration that doesn’t exist now returns a specific not-found error.
Invalid or conflicting view registrations no longer restore another view’s saved selections.
Per-view settings are excluded from exported global settings.
The provider adds claim-bound per-webview state for mode and selected-profile values. The change adds settings and message contracts, ID registration and state-loading logic, and a typed error for deleting a missing provider profile.
Changes: Claim-bound per-view state
Layer / File(s)
Summary
View-state contract and provider identity packages/types/src/global-settings.ts, packages/types/src/vscode-extension-host.ts, src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts, packages/types/src/__tests__/*
The settings schema adds per-view records, and host messages add view-state ID and claim fields. Each provider initializes an instance ID and local state buffer. Tests cover schema parsing and global-state keys.
Claim validation and persisted ID registration src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts, src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts, src/core/config/ContextProxy.ts
The provider reads, writes, rebinds, migrates, and prunes persisted entries. It validates IDs and claims, handles temporary IDs and concurrent registration, then sends claims to the webview. Tests cover ownership, legacy entries, and registration failures. ContextProxy excludes viewStates from settings exports.
Local selections and state loading src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts, src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts
The provider saves mode and profile selections, buffers provider settings locally, and loads validated saved selections while preserving changes made during asynchronous lookup.
Typed missing-profile deletion error
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Typed error from profile deletion src/core/config/ProviderSettingsManager.ts, src/core/config/__tests__/ProviderSettingsManager.spec.ts
Deleting an absent profile throws ProviderSettingsNotFoundError without wrapping it. The test checks the error type and message.

Explanation
The title names the main change: per-view view-state identity (viewId and viewStateId) and a host-minted claim token. The raw summary confirms these are the core changes in ClineProvider.ts, vscode-extension-host.ts, global-settings.ts, and their tests. The title is 96 characters, which is long, and the issue reference (N1, split 1/3 of #1546) adds internal jargon. These points do not make the title unrelated or vague.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
The claim-token boundary remains bypassable through settings import. This PR adds viewStates and accepts any string claimToken in packages/types/src/global-settings.ts:120-136. The unchanged sanitizeGlobalSettings preserves it at src/core/config/importExport.ts:99-123, and importSettingsFromPath persists it through contextProxy.setValues at :218-231; ContextProxy.setValue writes it to global state at src/core/config/ContextProxy.ts:541-545. ClineProvider.setViewStateId authorizes registration by equality with that stored token at src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:929-966. A crafted settings file can install a victim key with an attacker-selected claim and selections. A registration presenting those values then passes the claim check and can load the persisted profile or mode. Omitting viewStates from globalSettingsExportSchema only protects export. It does not protect import.
Resolution
Exclude viewStates from settings imports, or strip claimToken from every imported entry and store the entry unbound. Permit setViewStateId only for claims minted by the host during rebind or host-owned writes. Add an import regression test that imports a forged claim and verifies that it cannot authorize registration or load a view entry.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
The changed persistence path still loses access to persisted view state when claim delivery fails. savePersistedViewState awaits the durable contextProxy.setValue at ClineProvider.ts:747, but then calls postViewStateClaimToWebview without awaiting it at :762. The helper discards the postMessageToWebview promise at :810-812. Delivery returns silently when the provider is disposed or has no view (:2075-2085) and swallows delivery errors (:2087-2108). If saveViewState runs before a webview is ready or during disposal, the persisted entry keeps its new claim while the webview never receives it. On the next launch, setViewStateId rejects the missing or mismatched claim at :958-965, so the persisted selections are inaccessible. The same unawaited delivery also occurs after claim rebind and registration at :954 and :984.
Resolution
Make postViewStateClaimToWebview return the postMessageToWebview promise and await it from every claim-producing persistence path. Make unavailable or failed delivery observable, then queue and retry the claim when the webview becomes ready. Alternatively, remove or roll back a newly claim-bound entry when delivery fails and allow registration or saving to retry claim delivery.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description covers the scope, the explicit exclusions, the diff budget, test evidence, and the stack merge order. It does not follow the repository template. It has no 'Closes: #<issue>' line, which the template marks as mandatory. It links only to #1546 and a fork tracking issue 41, and it does not link an approved GitHub issue. The Description, Test Procedure, Pre-Submission Checklist, Documentation Updates, and Get in Touch sections are absent or not filled in. The description uses terms such as 'F0', 'N2', and 'N3' that a reviewer outside the stack cannot resolve.
Resolution
Add a 'Related GitHub Issue' section with a 'Closes: #<number>' line that points to an approved issue. If the approved issue is the fork tracking issue 41, state that and confirm it is approved. 2. Add a 'Description' section that explains the how: the viewStateId guards, the claim-binding flow, and the rebind path for legacy entries. Explain the key trade-offs. 3. Add a 'Test Procedure' section with the exact test command. The current evidence (220 passed, tsc clean) is useful; place it there. 4. Complete the Pre-Submission Checklist, or state which items do not apply. Mark the Testing item. Mark the Visual Snapshot item as not applicable, because the change has no UI impact. 5. Complete the Documentation Updates section. Mark 'No documentation updates are required' if that applies. 6. Add a 'Get in Touch' entry with the author's Discord username. 7. Define or link the stack shorthand (F0, N2, N3, F1b, and the others) so reviewers can read the stack order.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
Focused coverage remains incomplete for changed setViewStateId rejection behavior. ClineProvider.ts:879-883 rejects runtime non-string values, :894-903 rejects empty and whitespace-only normalized IDs, and :908-912 rejects IDs longer than 64 characters. The added tests cover only "__proto__" at ClineProvider.spec.ts:5555-5572; no focused tests cover these four rejection cases.
Resolution
Add focused ClineProvider tests for a runtime non-string value, an empty ID, a whitespace-only ID, and an ID longer than 64 characters. For each case, assert that viewStateId remains the temporary viewId, viewStates is unchanged or absent, and no viewStateClaim message is emitted.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
The changed view-state write path remains active after provider disposal. savePersistedViewState (ClineProvider.ts:696-764), rebindUnboundViewStateEntry (782-803), and rekeyPersistedViewStateEntry (827-871) enqueue closures on the static persistedViewStateWriteQueue. dispose() sets _disposed and cleans webview resources (1348-1412), but it does not cancel or invalidate those closures. If an earlier queued write is blocked, disposal is followed by execution of the retained provider closure, which can call contextProxy.setValue and mutate wroteUnderTemporaryViewStateId; the save path can also call claim delivery afterward. postMessageToWebview suppresses delivery after disposal, but it does not cancel the persistence work or release the queued provider reference. This is a changed lifecycle path that performs duplicate work after disposal and can retain a disposed provider.
Resolution
Make all queued view-state operations lifecycle-aware. Add a per-provider cancellation generation or abort signal and invalidate it in dispose(). Check it before each queued closure, after awaited persistence, before provider-state mutation, and before claim delivery. Skip or reject work for disposed providers. Avoid retaining disposed providers in shared queue work; if disposal must wait, drain only that provider's operations without blocking unrelated providers.

Add a positive test for an already claim-bearing entry.
The current tests do not accept a matching claim for an entry that still contains selections. Add that case and assert the viewStateId plus unchanged persisted selections. Do not assert viewLocalState restoration or posted state: setViewStateId does not call loadViewState, and _clearViewLocalState has no callers.

src/core/config/ContextProxy.ts: 1
41-41: Trivial · Security & Privacy · Quick win
Add a test that ContextProxy.export() omits viewStates.
No current test calls ContextProxy.export() and asserts that viewStates is absent from the result. Removing the viewStates: true exclusion from globalSettingsExportSchema can leave the current suite passing. Claim tokens are stored in viewStates, so a regression there could expose them in exported settings. Add a test in src/core/config/__tests__/ContextProxy.spec.ts that seeds viewStates through setValue, calls export(), and asserts that the viewStates key is absent.

Add a test for ContextProxy.export() that seeds viewStates via setValue, exports
the settings, and asserts the result does not contain the viewStates key; retain
the export exclusion for viewStates.
Test the stable-entry merge through setViewStateId, not the private helper.
The new test calls rekeyPersistedViewStateEntry directly and checks only the stored map. Registration through setViewStateId("stable-view", "host-token") does not run in this test, so a regression in its claim check or re-key call would not fail it. Registration does not load the active mode into viewLocalState, so this test should not assert a loaded mode. It should assert the adopted viewStateId and the persisted entry.

Assert the restored apiConfiguration in the registration-load test.
3618-3618: Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Assert the restored apiConfiguration in the registration-load test.
The test checks mode and currentApiConfigName, but it does not check apiConfiguration. A regression that drops or misassigns the profile settings loaded for the registered view would still pass. Mock getProfile on the instance's providerSettingsManager before setViewStateId runs, then assert the loaded settings. Mocking through the typed spy avoids the as any assignment. The mock value matches the declared return type, ProviderSettingsWithId & { name: string }.
The path instructions for this test file require regression coverage with behavior-focused assertions. This test covers the registration load, but it leaves the loaded profile settings unchecked.

The test loads the persisted selections of the registered view (src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts:5574-5592) checks only viewLocalState.mode and viewLocalState.currentApiConfigName. The load path also resolves the provider settings for the persisted profile. stored. Entries that are not objects are now dropped at the single read choke point
(both the cached and the fresh copy), so every writer - save, re-bind, re-key and the
claim check - sees only valid entries.
2. loadViewState swallowed a getCustomModes failure and returned normally, so a failed
restoration was indistinguishable from a completed one: setViewStateId kept the
adopted id, and every later registration of that id was swallowed by the
unchanged-id guard, so the selections were never reloaded. A load that aborts now
records the id as pending; a same-id registration passes the guard only while the id
is pending and still runs the persisted-entry claim check. The pending marker is
cleared only by a load that ran to completion. The id stays adopted after a
successful re-key (the entry is already under the stable name), and the rollback
still covers failures before that point.
Tests: 3 new cases in ClineProvider.spec.ts - corrupt entry cannot reject a save, a
failed load is retried by a same-id registration, a completed restoration stays behind
the guard.

Reject non-numeric updatedAt values when reading persisted view states.
An entry whose updatedAt is an object passes the filter in getPersistedViewStates. The sort in prunePersistedViewStates then throws a TypeError, and every later save fails until that entry is removed.

Review comment at @src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts around lines 687 - 688:
Update the entry validation in getPersistedViewStates to reject entries whose
updatedAt is present but not numeric, while continuing to accept entries where
updatedAt is absent or numeric. This prevents malformed persisted values from
reaching prunePersistedViewStates.
Assert the reloaded apiConfiguration in the retry test.
Assert the reloaded apiConfiguration in the retry test.
The retry test checks mode and currentApiConfigName after the second registration. It does not check viewLocalState.apiConfiguration. If the profile lookup in loadViewState is removed or fails, this test still passes, so a regression in profile restoration would not be detected.
Stub getProfile for the second registration, and assert the restored apiConfiguration. The loader removes name from the profile before assigning it, so the expected value omits name.

5705 - 5707:
Update the retry test around setViewStateId to stub
providerSettingsManager.getProfile for the second registration and assert that
viewLocalState.apiConfiguration is restored with the expected profile fields,
omitting name. Preserve the existing mode, currentApiConfigName, and
pending-restoration assertions, and restore the new spy with the test’s other
spies.

Split unit N1 of #1546 (F1a — per-view view-state identity)
Part of the split plan recorded in the tracking issue (fork issue 41): #1546 mixed per-view identity, the durable
viewStatespipeline, buffer/mutation behaviour, plus F0 (button targeting) and F3 (mode/profile write) content. This unit carries only the identity contract; F0 content stays in #1528 and F3 content in #1560.Scope (contract point)
