Split unit N2 of #1546 (F1a — durable per-view viewStates pipeline)

Second unit of the split plan recorded in the tracking issue (fork issue 41). Depends on N1 (identity/claim); the buffer/mutation/write-path content is not included.

Scope (contract point)

  • Serialized persistedViewStateWriteQueue, fresh-read merge on save, 50-entry prune, corrupt-value guard.
  • Rekey on registration, clear on reset/delete, and export/import sanitization for viewStates (ContextProxy omit, importExport skip).
  • Typed ProviderSettingsNotFoundError handling used by the identity/adoption path.

Explicitly NOT in this unit

Budget (own delta vs the parent unit)

  • git diff vps2/n1-view-identity..
: 326 insertions, 428 deletions (~754 a+d) → under the 1,000 hard cap.
  • Cumulative diff vs 05d01f33d is intentionally larger; measure this unit against its parent, not main.

Evidence

  • ClineProvider.spec.ts + ContextProxy.spec.ts + importExport.spec.ts + ProviderSettingsManager.spec.ts: 362 passed.
  • tsc --noEmit: clean (0 errors).

Stack / merge order

F0 (#1528) → N1 → N2 (this PR) → N3 → F1b (#1550) → F1c (#1552) → F3 (#1560) → F4/F5/F6/F7. Base is main; merge strictly in order.

Refs: #1546, tracking issue 41 (fork).

Split unit N2 of Zoo-Code-Org#1546: viewStates read/write queue, claim rekey, prune, clear, load/save and export/import sanitization on top of N1 identity. Buffer/mutation/history content remains for N3.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Each view remembers its selected mode and provider profile independently, including after reopening.
  • Improvements
    • Saving changes to a provider profile refreshes views using it, without affecting views pinned to another profile.
    • View-specific selections are excluded from settings imports and exports.
    • Deleting a provider configuration that doesn’t exist now returns a distinct not-found error.

The PR adds persisted per-view mode and provider-profile selections with ID and claim validation, asynchronous restoration, and a 50-entry limit. Settings import and export omit this state. It also adds a distinct error for deleting a missing provider configuration and checks Git LFS availability in hooks.

Changes: Per-view State

Layer / File(s) Summary
View-state and message contracts
packages/types/src/global-settings.ts, packages/types/src/vscode-extension-host.ts, packages/types/src/__tests__/*
The global settings schema adds per-view records with optional selection fields and a claim token. Extension messages add view-state ID and claim fields.
Claimed view-state registration
src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts, src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts
ClineProvider validates view IDs and claims, persists owned entries with serialized writes, merges updates, and prunes entries to the newest 50. Tests cover registration, ownership, persistence, and concurrency.
Selection restoration and profile updates
src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts, src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts
ClineProvider restores saved selections, tracks local mutations, and refreshes buffered profile settings during activation and saving. Tests cover load races and state updates.
Exclude view state from settings transfers
src/core/config/ContextProxy.ts, src/core/config/importExport.ts, src/core/config/__tests__/*
Settings export omits viewStates, and import ignores it while retaining other global settings.

Provider Configuration Deletion

Layer / File(s) Summary
Distinguish missing configurations
src/core/config/ProviderSettingsManager.ts, src/core/config/__tests__/ProviderSettingsManager.spec.ts
Deleting a nonexistent configuration throws ProviderSettingsNotFoundError. The error handler rethrows this type unchanged.

Storage Writes and Git Hooks

Layer / File(s) Summary
Restore cached value after write failure
src/core/config/ContextProxy.ts
If a global-state write rejects, ContextProxy restores the previous cached value and rethrows the error.
Check Git LFS availability
.husky/_/post-checkout, .husky/_/post-commit, .husky/_/post-merge, .husky/_/pre-push
The hooks report an error and exit with status 2 when git-lfs is unavailable. Otherwise, they invoke the matching Git LFS hook.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the feature (durable per-view viewStates pipeline) and the layer (webview). The changeset adds viewStates schema, persistence queue, pruning, and view registration rekeying, so the title matches the main change. It also adds a scope tag (N2, split 2/3 of #1546) that a reviewer scanning history may find noisy. The title is 76 characters, within a reasonable length.

Full details: Security Boundaries

Explanation

No changed path meets the failure conditions. ClineProvider.setViewStateId sanitizes and bounds IDs, rejects IDs held by live views, and requires an exact host-minted claim for an existing claimed entry before loading the saved profile (src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:820-923). Persisted view-state writes accept only mode and currentApiConfigName, and mint claims in the host (src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:616-667); the schema contains no API credentials (packages/types/src/global-settings.ts:120-141). Export and import both exclude viewStates (src/core/config/ContextProxy.ts:35-42; src/core/config/importExport.ts:99-107).

Full details: Persistence Integrity

Explanation

FAIL — claim delivery is not awaited, so persisted view state can become inaccessible. ClineProvider.postViewStateClaimToWebview calls void this.postMessageToWebview(...) (lines 736–738). postMessageToWebview catches and silently drops delivery failures (lines 2046–2054). When setViewStateId binds a claim-less stored entry, it persists a fresh claim and sends it this way (lines 882–895); a failed delivery leaves the webview without the token, and a later registration is refused because the stored claim does not match (lines 898–905). The production launch handler also posts state without registering an ID or forwarding a claim (webviewMessageHandler.ts:594–600), and the webview launch sends only webviewDidLaunch (ExtensionStateContext.tsx:521–523).

Resolution

Await claim delivery and handle delivery failure explicitly. Add retry or recovery behavior so a persisted claim cannot become inaccessible if the webview does not receive it. Wire launch to send the stable view ID and presented claim, await setViewStateId before posting state, and handle viewStateClaim in the webview so it stores and echoes the host-minted claim. Merge the loaded viewLocalState fields into getState so restored mode, profile name, and profile settings reach getStateToPostToWebview.

Full details: Regression Evidence

Explanation

The changed setViewStateId validation has two uncovered negative-input branches. ClineProvider.ts:825-830 ignores non-string IDs, and :848-853 ignores normalized IDs longer than 64 characters. The focused setViewStateId tests cover "__proto__" and other registration behaviors, but none pass a non-string or oversized ID. These branches therefore lack focused regression evidence. This confirms the standing failure; no changes since then address it.

Resolution

Add focused ClineProvider.spec.ts tests that pass a non-string ID and an ID longer than 64 characters to setViewStateId. Assert each call keeps the provider on its prior ID and does not load or mutate persisted state or deliver a claim.

Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup

Explanation

The changed constructor registers this in ClineProvider.activeInstances at src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:431 before getWorkspacePath() at line 432. getWorkspacePath() calls vscode.workspace.getWorkspaceFolder() without a catch (src/utils/path.ts:152–168). If that VS Code API throws during workspace or editor teardown, construction aborts and the caller cannot dispose the provider. The provider remains in the static set; normal disposal removes it only at line 1445. The base revision added the provider to the set after workspace-path resolution, so this leak path is introduced by the PR.

Resolution

Move ClineProvider.activeInstances.add(this) to after synchronous initialization that can throw, including getWorkspacePath(), or add constructor-failure cleanup that removes this from the set.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template sections for issue link, scope, budget, evidence, and merge order. It omits the template's required 'Closes: #' issue link. It does not state a Test Procedure in the template's format, though it lists test runs and a tsc result. The Pre-Submission Checklist, Visual Snapshots, Videos, Documentation Updates, and Get in Touch sections are absent. The description uses contractions-free, short sentences in general, but the Simplified Technical English style is not fully followed. The description references the fork tracking issue (fork issue 41) rather than an approved GitHub issue linked in the template format.

Resolution

Add a 'Related GitHub Issue' section with a 'Closes: #' line that links an approved GitHub issue. If the tracking issue is in a fork, state that clearly and link the approved upstream issue. Add a Test Procedure section with the reproducible test commands and steps. Complete the Pre-Submission Checklist. State whether Visual Snapshots, Videos, and Documentation Updates apply, and mark N/A where they do not. Add a Get in Touch section with the Discord username. Rewrite sentences to follow the Simplified Technical English style the template asks for.

Minor · Filter null viewStates entries before pruning. · ClineProvider.ts:597

src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:597
🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Filter null viewStates entries before pruning.

getPersistedViewStates copies a null entry into the map. prunePersistedViewStates then reads .updatedAt on that entry during sorting. The queued write rejects before setValue runs, so the null entry stays in storage and every later write fails the same way. Filter out entries that are not objects in getPersistedViewStates. The next successful write then removes the bad entry.

🐛 Suggested fix

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Rebuild a task that runs under the saved profile, even when this view pins a different profile.

The rebuild at src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:2633-2641 runs only when this.pinnedProfileName === name. A task whose taskApiConfigName is name but whose view pins another profile keeps its old API handler after a non-activating save. The inner taskApiConfigName === name check already prevents switching other tasks, so the outer pin check blocks a rebuild that should happen. This predates the PR. The non-activating branch never rebuilt the task before, and this change only adds the pinned-view rebuild.

🐛 Suggested fix
 			if (this.pinnedProfileName === name) {
 				await this._saveViewLocalStateFromMutation({ apiConfiguration: providerSettings })
- // Only rebuild when the task actually runs under the saved profile: a
- // view pinned to this profile can hold a task that follows a different
- // sticky profile, and the forced rebuild would silently switch that
- // conversation to the saved profile's settings.

In the save flow, the task handler rebuild is incorrectly gated by
`this.pinnedProfileName === name`. Keep `_saveViewLocalStateFromMutation` inside
that pin check, but move the `getCurrentTask()?.taskApiConfigName === name`
check and `updateTaskApiHandlerIfNeeded` call outside it so a task using the
saved profile is rebuilt even when the view pins another profile.

Review comments at @.husky/_/pre-push:
- Line 3: Move the Git LFS pre-push invocation from the generated Husky stub
into the project’s pre-push hook as its first command, preserving the pushed-ref
arguments and allowing the existing branch guard, type check, and optional tests
to run. Untrack the generated Husky hook directory so Husky can recreate its
stubs during installation.

Review comments at @src/core/config/ContextProxy.ts:
- Around line 374-380: Update updateGlobalState to track a per-key write
sequence and restore previousCachedValue in the catch block only if the rejected
write is still the latest write for that key. Preserve any newer cached value
when a later write has superseded it.

# Troubleshoot

## Command not found

See How To for solutions.

## Hooks not running

  1. Verify the file name is correct. For example, `precommit` or `pre-commit.sh` are invalid names. Refer to the Git hooks documentation for valid names.
  2. Run `git config core.hooksPath` and ensure it points to `.husky/_` (or your custom hooks directory).
  3. Confirm your Git version is above `2.9`.

## `.git/hooks/` Not Working After Uninstall

If hooks in `.git/hooks/` don't work post-uninstalling `husky`, execute `git config --unset core.hooksPath`.

Restore the Husky hook chain by untracking .husky/_ and calling Git LFS from .husky/pre-push.

Under core.hooksPath=.husky/_, Git runs .husky/_/pre-push. The committed file runs only git lfs pre-push and never reaches .husky/pre-push. Pushes then skip the main branch guard, check-types, and the test run when RUN_TESTS_ON_PUSH is true. Husky runs the project hook with sh -e, so a failing check-types or test command also rejects the push.

husky runs during prepare and rewrites every .husky/_ hook, including pre-push, as a stub that calls .husky/pre-push. The committed stub therefore stays active only until the next pnpm install. Switching to a branch without these files deletes the tracked stubs, and Git then runs no pre-push hook until pnpm install runs again.

Untrack the generated directory:

git rm -r --cached .husky/_

Move the Git LFS call into the project hook, as the first command so it reads the pushed refs from stdin before other commands run:

Review comment at @.husky/_/pre-push at line 3:
Move the Git LFS pre-push invocation from the generated Husky stub into the
project’s pre-push hook as its first command, preserving the pushed-ref
arguments and allowing the existing branch guard, type check, and optional tests
to run. Untrack the generated Husky hook directory so Husky can recreate its
stubs during installation.

L91: # Common Capabilities
L92:
L93: Copy as Markdown
L94:
L95: Ask in VS Code
L96:
L97: * * *
L98:
L99: Common Capabilities are important building blocks for your extensions. Almost all extensions use some of these functionalities. Here is how you can take advantage of them.
L100: ## Command
L101:
L102: Command is central to how VS Code works. You open the Command Palette to execute commands, bind custom keybindings to commands, and right-click to invoke commands in Context Menus.
L103:
L104: An extension could:
L105:
L106: * Register and execute commands with the 【89†`vscode.commands`】 API.
L107: * Make commands available in the Command Palette with the 【90†`contributes.commands`】 Contribution Point.
L108:
L109: Learn more about commands at the 【25†Extension Guides / Command】 topic.
L110: ## Configuration
L111:
L112: An extension can contribute extension-specific settings with the 【91†`contributes.configuration`】 Contribution Point and read them using the 【92†`workspace.getConfiguration`】 API.
L113:
L114: ## Keybinding
L115:
L116: An extension can add custom keybindings. Read more in the 【93†`contributes.keybindings`】 and 【94†Key Bindings】 topics.
L117: ## Context Menu
L118:
L119: An extension can register custom Context Menu items that will be displayed in different parts of the VS Code UI on right-click. Read more at the 【95†`contributes.menus`】 Contribution Point.
L120: ## Data Storage
L121:
L122: There are five options for storing data:
L123: * 【96†`ExtensionContext.workspaceState`】: A workspace storage where you can write key/value pairs. VS Code manages the storage and will restore it when the same workspace is opened again.
L124: * 【97†`ExtensionContext.globalState`】: A global storage where you can write key/value pairs. VS Code manages the storage and will restore it for each extension activation. You can selectively synchronize key/value pairs in global storage by setting the keys for sync using `setKeysForSync` method on `globalState`.
L125: * 【98†`ExtensionContext.storageUri`】: A workspace specific storage URI pointing to a local directory where your extension has read/write access. This is a good option if you need to store large files that are accessible only from the current workspace.
L126: * 【99†`ExtensionContext.globalStorageUri`】: A global storage URI pointing to a local directory where your extension has read/write access. This is a good option if you need to store large files that are accessible from all workspaces.
L127: * 【100†`ExtensionContext.secrets`】: A global storage for secrets (or any information that is sensitive) that will be encrypted. These are not synced across machines. For VS Code desktop, this leverages Electron's 【101†safeStorage API†www.electronjs.org】. For VS Code for the Web, this uses a Double Key Encryption (DKE) implementation.
L128: The extension context is available to the `activate` function in the 【102†Extension Entry File】.
L129: ### setKeysForSync example
L130:
L131: If your extension needs to preserve some user state across different machines then provide the state to 【103†Setting Sync】 using `vscode.ExtensionContext.globalState.setKeysForSync`.
L132: You can use the following pattern:
L133:
L134: `// on activate
L135:     const versionKey = 'shown.version';
L136:     context.globalState.setKeysForSync([versionKey]);
L137:
L138: // later on show page
L139:     const currentVersion = context.extension.packageJSON.version;
L140:     const lastVersionShown = context.globalState.get(versionKey);
L141:     if (isHigher(currentVersion, lastVersionShown)) {
L142:         context.globalState.update(versionKey, currentVersion);
L143:     }
L144: `
L145: Sharing state across machines can help avoid the problem of users seeing multiple instances of a welcome or update page, by sharing dismissed or viewed flags.
L146: ## Display Notifications
L147:
L148: Almost all extensions need to present information to the user at some point. VS Code offers three APIs for displaying notification messages of different severity:
L149:
L150: * 【104†`window.showInformationMessage`】
L151: * 【105†`window.showWarningMessage`】
L152: * 【106†`window.showErrorMessage`】
L153:
L154: ## Quick Pick
L155:
L156: With the 【107†`vscode.QuickPick`】 API, you can easily collect user input or let the user make a selection from multiple options. The 【108†QuickInput sample†github.com】 illustrates the API.
L157: ## File Picker
L158:
L159: Extensions can use the 【109†`window.showOpenDialog`】 API to open the system file picker and select files or folders.
L160:
L161: ## Output Channel
L162:
L163: The Output Panel displays a collection of 【110†`OutputChannel`】, which are great for logging purposes. You can easily take advantage of it with the 【111†`window.createOutputChannel`】 API.
L164: ## Progress API
L165:
L166: You can use the 【112†`vscode.Progress`】 API for reporting progress updates to the user.
L167:
L168: Progress can be shown in different locations using the 【113†`ProgressLocation`】 option:
L169:
L170: * In the Notifications area
L171: * In the Source Control view
L172: * General progress in the VS Code window
L173:
L174: The 【114†Progress sample†github.com】 illustrates this API.

#### Functions

applyEdit(edit: WorkspaceEdit, metadata?: WorkspaceEditMetadata): Thenable<boolean>

Make changes to one or many resources or create, delete, and rename resources as defined by the given workspace edit.

All changes of a workspace edit are applied in the same order in which they have been added. If multiple textual inserts are made at the same position, these strings appear in the resulting text in the order the 'inserts' were made, unless that are interleaved with resource edits. Invalid sequences like 'delete file a' -> 'insert text in file a' cause failure of the operation.

When applying a workspace edit that consists only of text edits an 'all-or-nothing'-strategy is used. A workspace edit with resource creations or deletions aborts the operation, e.g. consecutive edits will not be attempted, when a single edit fails.

Parameter | Description
--- | ---
edit: WorkspaceEdit | A workspace edit.
metadata?: WorkspaceEditMetadata | Optional metadata for the edit.
Returns | Description
--- | ---
Thenable<boolean> | A thenable that resolves when the edit could be applied.

asRelativePath(pathOrUri: string | Uri, includeWorkspaceFolder?: boolean): string

Returns a path that is relative to the workspace folder or folders.

When there are no workspace folders or when the path is not contained in them, the input is returned.

Parameter | Description
--- | ---
pathOrUri: string | Uri | A path or uri. When a uri is given its fsPath is used.
includeWorkspaceFolder?: boolean | When `true` and when the given path is contained inside a workspace folder the name of the workspace is prepended. Defaults to `true` when there are multiple workspace folders and `false` otherwise.
Returns | Description
--- | ---
string | A path relative to the root or the input.

createFileSystemWatcher(globPattern: GlobPattern, ignoreCreateEvents?: boolean, ignoreChangeEvents?: boolean, ignoreDeleteEvents?: boolean): FileSystemWatcher
See also workspace.openNotebookDocument

Parameter | Description
--- | ---
notebookType: string | The notebook type that should be used.
content?: NotebookData | The initial contents of the notebook.
Returns | Description
--- | ---
Thenable<NotebookDocument> | A promise that resolves to a notebook.

openTextDocument(uri: Uri, options?: {encoding: string}): Thenable<TextDocument>

Opens a document. Will return early if this document is already open. Otherwise the document is loaded and the didOpen-event fires.

The document is denoted by an Uri. Depending on the scheme the following rules apply:

  * `file`-scheme: Open a file on disk (`openTextDocument(Uri.file(path))`). Will be rejected if the file does not exist or cannot be loaded.
  * `untitled`-scheme: Open a blank untitled file with …[truncated]</excerpt>

Restore the cache only when this write still owns the key.

When updateGlobalState rejects, the catch block sets stateCache[key] to the value captured before this call. If a later write to the same key already cached its value, this rollback replaces that newer value with a stale one. Readers then get the stale value from the cache, while storage holds the newer write. The base code had no rollback and kept the newer cached value. Track a per-key write sequence so a rejected write restores the cache only when it is still the latest write.

Update updateGlobalState to track a per-key write sequence and restore
previousCachedValue in the catch block only if the rejected write is still the
latest write for that key. Preserve any newer cached value when a later write
has superseded it.
