fix(ai-gemini): split embed() input into requests of at most 100 - #2037
embed() with the Gemini adapter fails when you pass more than 100 texts. The Gemini API returns a 400 error for that batch. This PR sends the texts in requests of at most 100, in input order.
🎯 Changes
GeminiEmbeddingAdapter.createEmbeddings sent the full array in one embedContent call. The client posts that call as batchEmbedContents, and Gemini rejects more than 100 requests in one body. The adapter now sends slices of 100, checks each response, and adds Vertex billable character counts across the requests.
Docs do not describe this batch limit, so docs/ is unchanged. A patch changeset is included.
I have tested code changes locally with pnpm run test:pr, or these tests do not apply to this pull request.
I fully understand the code in this pull request, including any code generated with AI assistance.
Docs: I updated docs/ for this change, or this change is not user-facing.
Changeset: I added a changeset (pnpm changeset), or this PR does not change a published package.
🚀 Release Impact
This change affects published code, and I have generated a changeset.
This change is docs/CI/dev-only (no release).
Root cause
Issue. Callers of embed() with the Gemini adapter and more than 100 texts get a 400 error.
Cause.GeminiEmbeddingAdapter.createEmbeddings passed the whole array to one embedContent call. The client maps each text to one entry in batchEmbedContents.
Fix. The adapter sends sequential slices of at most 100 texts, checks the length of each response, and keeps vector order.
Possible alternatives
Caller-side chunks. Each caller loops over 100 texts. This PR does not do that, because every caller would repeat the same loop.
Parallel requests.Promise.all is faster, and a later slice can start before an earlier slice ends. A 429 error is more likely. This PR waits for each request.
Testing
Commands run. An agent-written test sent 101 texts through GeminiEmbeddingAdapter.createEmbeddings with a mock that rejects more than 100 contents. On main the call threw GATE1 batch over 100. On this change the mock saw requests of 100 and 1, and the result had 101 vectors. pnpm run test:pr was not run locally.
Manual test.
On main, call Gemini embed() with 101 texts. The call fails with a batch limit error.
On this branch, run pnpm --dir packages/ai-gemini exec vitest run tests/embedding-adapter.test.ts.
Make sure that the new test passes: 3 calls, sizes 100, 100, and 1, and 201 vectors in input order.
How this PR makes testing easy.packages/ai-gemini/tests/embedding-adapter.test.ts covers a 201-text input.
Risk / rollback
Risk is low for inputs of 1 to 100 texts. Those stay one request. Revert this PR to restore the old single request.

Walkthrough
The Gemini embedding adapter now sends inputs in sequential batches of up to 100. It validates each batch response, preserves embedding order, and sums reported billable-character counts across batches.

Summary
Batch requests and aggregate results packages/ai-gemini/src/adapters/embedding.ts, packages/ai-gemini/tests/embedding-adapter.test.ts, .changeset/gemini-embed-batch-limit.md
The adapter sends up to 100 texts per request, checks that each response matches its batch size, appends embeddings in input order, and sums defined billable-character counts. The test checks request sizes and result ordering for 201 inputs. The changeset documents the patch release.

Make the batching test fail when batches run concurrently.
The mock resolves every embedContent call immediately. A version that starts all three batches with Promise.all would still pass. The assertions check the call count, batch sizes, result length, and vector order. None of them checks whether calls overlap.
Hold the first call open with a deferred promise. Then assert that only one call exists before you release it.
In the test, start createEmbeddings without awaiting it. Flush pending microtasks, for example with await new Promise((resolve) => setTimeout(resolve, 0)). Assert that spy.mock.calls.length is 1. Then call releaseFirstBatch() and await the result. Keep the existing assertions after that.

Add a multi-batch test that asserts the summed billed quantity.
The split test returns embeddings without billableCharacterCount, so it does not check billed usage. The existing usage test covers one response only. If the adapter kept only the last batch's count, both tests would still pass. The suggested test sends 101 inputs as two batches and expects a billed quantity of 307.

Thanks for splitting Gemini embed batches at the adapter. I checked the 100-text slice, the per-batch length check, vector order, and the Vertex character sum. An agent-written 101-text repro fails on main and passes with this change.
