fix(ai-cloudflare): split embed() inputs into batches of at most 100 - #2036
embed() with more than 100 texts failed on Workers AI embedding models, because the Cloudflare adapter sent all texts in one request. The adapter now sends sequential requests of at most 100 texts and returns the vectors in input order. An aborted signal now stops the remaining requests.
🎯 Changes
packages/ai-cloudflare/src/adapters/embedding.ts: createEmbeddings sends the texts in batches of at most 100 (CLOUDFLARE_MAX_BATCH_SIZE). Each batch must return one vector per text. Otherwise the adapter throws the same error as before.
The adapter checks abortSignal before each batch. The binding path does not pass the signal to env.AI.run, so without this check an abort did not stop the later batches.
With 100 texts or fewer, the request is the same as before: one call, same modelOptions, same signal.
Changeset: patch for @tanstack/ai-cloudflare.
Docs: not changed. No doc describes how embedding requests are batched.
I have tested code changes locally with pnpm run test:pr, or these tests do not apply to this pull request. (Package tests, type check, oxlint and oxfmt only. See Testing.)
I fully understand the code in this pull request, including any code generated with AI assistance.
Docs: I updated docs/ for this change, or this change is not user-facing. (No doc covers embedding batching.)
Changeset: I added a changeset (pnpm changeset), or this PR does not change a published package.
🚀 Release Impact
This change affects published code, and I have generated a changeset.
This change is docs/CI/dev-only (no release).
Root cause
Issue.embed() with more than 100 texts fails with an API error for Cloudflare embedding users. Cause.CloudflareEmbeddingAdapter.createEmbeddings sent the whole input array as one { text: [...] } request. Workers AI caps that array at 100 items for the BGE and EmbeddingGemma models. Fix. The adapter sends the texts in batches of at most 100 and joins the vectors in input order.
Possible alternatives
Per-model limits.@cf/qwen/qwen3-embedding-0.6b reportedly caps at 32. A per-model table would cover it, but the limit is not confirmed, so it is left for a separate change.
Throw above 100. This moves the same loop into every caller.
Concurrent batches. This is faster for large inputs, but it adds rate-limit exposure and a concurrency option that this fix does not need.
Testing
Commands run
Reviewer repro, written for this review, on clean main (48cbc66d6): 101 texts against a fake binding that rejects more than 100 items. Result: × … Error: AiError: text must have <= 100 items, got 101.
The same repro on this branch: Tests 1 passed.
vitest run tests/cloudflare-adapter.test.ts in packages/ai-cloudflare: 38 passed.
nx run @tanstack/ai-cloudflare:test:types, oxlint and oxfmt --check on the changed files: clean.
Not run: the full pnpm test:pr, E2E, and live Workers AI calls. Cloudflare embeddings are not in the E2E feature matrix, and aimock has no /ai/run mount.
Manual test
On main, call embed({ adapter: cloudflareEmbedding('@cf/baai/bge-m3'), input }) with 150 strings. Expect a Workers AI 400 error.
On this branch, make the same call. Expect 150 vectors with indexes 0 to 149.
Abort the signal during the first request. Expect a rejection and no further requests.
How this PR makes testing easy
There are two unit tests in packages/ai-cloudflare/tests/cloudflare-adapter.test.ts:
250 texts send requests of 100, 100 and 50.
An abort after the first batch stops the loop.
Risk / rollback
Low risk. Calls with 100 texts or fewer do not change. Large inputs now take one request per 100 texts, sent in sequence. To undo, revert this PR.
Disclosure: this change was prepared with the help of an AI coding assistant (Claude).
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Embedding requests with more than 100 texts are processed in sequential batches of up to 100. Returned vectors preserve the input order, and requests are rejected if a batch does not return one vector per text.
If an abort signal is triggered, remaining batches are skipped and the abort reason is returned as a rejection. Some models with lower input limits may still reject large requests.
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.
Walkthrough
The Cloudflare embedding adapter now sends inputs in batches of up to 100. It checks for aborts between batches, validates the number of returned vectors for each batch, and combines valid vectors in input order.

The adapter sends batches of up to 100 inputs, checks for aborts between batches, and validates that each batch returns one vector per input. It combines vectors in input order. Tests cover batches of 100, 100, and 50 inputs, and verify that an abort prevents another request. Batch qwen3-embedding-0.6b inputs at 32 or fewer.
The adapter splits every request at 100 texts, for all models. The Workers AI schema for @cf/qwen/qwen3-embedding-0.6b caps the text array at 32 items, so calls with 33 or more texts to this model fail. The constant comment at line 11 also states the 100-text limit for all text-embedding models, which is incorrect for this model.

The batching test uses a fake binding that always returns one vector per input. The shape test returns no data array, so only the Array.isArray check runs. If the output.data.length !== batch.length check is removed, a batch with fewer vectors than inputs is appended without error. The adapter then returns fewer embeddings than inputs, and no test fails.
Add a test where the fake binding returns one vector fewer than a full batch of 100 inputs. Assert that createEmbeddings rejects with /returned 99 embeddings for 100 inputs/.

The new test checks the batch sizes, the total count, and only the first and last embeddings. Position 100 is the first vector of the second batch. The fixture returns vector: [i] at index i, so these assertions detect such a change at the boundary.

Thanks @pcbeingused333, nice clean fix. I reproduced the >100-input failure on main with my own test and confirmed it passes here, then pushed a small follow-up: an abort check between batches (the binding path ignores the signal) and narrower changeset wording, since qwen3-embedding caps lower than 100.
