feat(release): publish releases to PyPI with an API token (#267) - #491
Brings back .github/workflows/publish.yml (removed in #488) now that the owner has a PyPI account. It reverses that won't-do and closes#267 once the first upload lands.
What changed from the old workflow
It authenticates with a PyPI API token, the PYPI_API_TOKEN secret of the pypi environment (already set). Trusted publishing is gone, so no pypi.org publisher registration is needed.
id-token: write is dropped. Attestations are off because they need trusted publishing.
Everything else is unchanged: uv build, a tag-vs-version check, twine check --strict, and an upload from a separate job that alone enters the pypi environment.
The version is bumped to 10.3.4 so the first upload is a fresh release.
Gates run locally: ruff, mypy strict, uv build and twine check --strict all pass. pytest has 3967 passing and 2 failing. The 2 failures (test_name_timelines.py::test_preflight_names_the_ranked_note_not_a_newer_decoy) fail on unmodified main on this machine too, and main CI is green.
Brings back publish.yml (dropped in #488) now that the owner has a PyPI
account. It authenticates with the PYPI_API_TOKEN secret of the `pypi`
environment instead of trusted publishing, so no pypi.org publisher setup
is needed. The rest is unchanged: build sdist + wheel with `uv build`,
check the release tag matches the pyproject version, `twine check
--strict`, and upload from a separate job that alone enters the `pypi`
environment. Bumps to 10.3.4 so the first upload is a fresh release.

Published releases are now available on PyPI as well as GitHub, making the package easier to install through the Python package index.
Release packages are checked before upload, including verification that the release tag matches the package version.
Documentation
Updated release guidance to explain PyPI publishing, manual dry runs, and retries.
Clarified that the self-updater continues to install from a GitHub release ref.
The pull request adds a GitHub Actions workflow to build, validate, and conditionally upload package distributions to PyPI. It updates the package version to 10.3.4 and revises release instructions and related documentation.

Summary
Configure distribution builds .github/workflows/publish.yml, .github/workflows/test.yml, pyproject.toml, src/omind/__init__.py
The new workflow supports published-release and manual triggers. It builds distributions, checks release tags against the packaged version, and validates distribution metadata. The project and package versions change to 10.3.4.
Gate and upload distributions .github/workflows/publish.yml
The upload job runs for published releases or manual runs with dry_run disabled. It downloads the built artifacts and uploads them using the token from the pypi environment.
Document the release process CHANGELOG.md, CONTRIBUTING.md, docs/self-update.md, BACKLOG.md
The changelog and contributor instructions describe PyPI publishing. The updater documentation says it still installs from a GitHub ref. The backlog records the first PyPI publish and its completion condition.

Merge Risk: Low · up to d3002
The new PyPI publish workflow is sound for the normal release path. If an upload fails halfway, the documented retry will not finish the release without a small fix: enable skip-existing and correct the retry guidance. This is a bounded, low-impact follow-up.

Explanation
The workflow implements the API-token publication path for [#267]. It builds artifacts, checks the release tag and package version, runs twine check --strict, and uploads from the pypi environment with PYPI_API_TOKEN. The version is 10.3.4. However, [#267] requires the first package publication, and the PR evidence states that no upload has occurred yet.
Resolution
Run the release workflow and complete one successful upload of omind 10.3.4 to PyPI. Verify that the package is available on PyPI.

uv build builds the wheel from the sdist, but .github/workflows/test.yml:80 builds it directly from the checkout. The smoke test can therefore pass when the sdist omits a required file. Change the CI build to uv build, or smoke-test the wheel produced here. (docs.astral.sh)

The action expands dist/* in lexical order, so the wheel is uploaded before the sdist. If the wheel succeeds and the sdist fails, a retry sees the existing wheel first. With skip-existing unset, Twine 7.0.0 stops on that existing-file error and does not upload the sdist.
Set skip-existing: true. Twine will skip the existing wheel and continue with the missing sdist. This makes the documented retry workflow recoverable. The documentation sentence is still too broad: PyPI rejects an existing distribution file, not an entire version.

Minor · Data Integrity & Integration · Quick win
Document partial-upload retries correctly.
PyPI uploads distribution files individually. A failed run can publish one artifact before failing. The pinned publish action leaves skip-existing disabled by default, so rerunning can fail on an already-published sdist or wheel. PyPI rejects an existing distribution filename, not every additional file for the same version. (docs.pypi.org)
Replace this instruction with a recovery path that checks the release files first and handles partial uploads.
