feat(placement): add the sie-placement tune KEDA applier - #910
Adds sie-placement tune, an optional applier for Kubernetes. It reads each lane's series from Prometheus, calls the tuner step with the carrier pool's floor from GET /v1/pools as the current setting, and with --apply upserts one floor-carrier logical pool per lane through SIEClient.create_pool. It never lowers another pool's floor, reports a lane whose aggregate floor exceeds its envelope, and refuses envelopes above the gateway's pool limits. Shadow mode is the default. Before it calls Prometheus or the gateway, it refuses a plan the chart cannot run: a pin on the default queue pool, or a warmth the chart cannot realize (bridged, snapshot-cold or scheduled-warm). It uses the same checks and wording as the Helm values emitter. The SDK dependency is an optional extra.
This uses the gateway admin token, so it is a trust-boundary change: the token is read from an environment variable or file and never logged, and the README states the permission it needs.
Add a `sie-placement tune` command that keeps each plan lane's warm
floor inside its envelope on a KEDA-scaled sie-cluster deployment:
- every tick it reads four lane series from Prometheus (lane queue
depth, pending demand, warm floor and ready workers), reads the lane's
floor-carrier pool with SIEClient.get_pool, and calls the tuner step
with that pool's floor as current
- shadow mode is the default and writes nothing; with --apply it upserts
one floor-carrier logical pool per lane through SIEClient.create_pool
on every tick, which also renews the pool's lease
- a carrier is named placement-floor-<queuePool>-<machineProfile>-<bundle>
and has gpus {<machineProfile>: 0}, the lane's queue pool and bundle,
no pins, no caps and the gateway's default lease; a pool with that name
and any other spec is reported and never written
- the applier writes only its carriers, so it never lowers another
pool's floor, and each audit row reports a lane whose warm floor
exceeds floorMax
- a lane missing a series is held and only brought inside its envelope
- the plan is refused before any call when an envelope's floorMax is
above the gateway's per-pool floor limit, when it has more lanes than
the gateway's API pool limit, or when its lane tokens cannot name a
carrier
Pool reads use a gateway client token and pool writes the gateway admin
token, each read from a file or an environment variable. The admin
token is read only with --apply, is sent only on pool writes, and is
never printed or logged. The README documents the permission each call
needs.
The SIE SDK and httpx come from a new keda extra; the schema, tuner and
applier core keep to the standard library. Tests drive the applier with
a fake Prometheus and fake pools, and drive the command through the real
SDK against fake HTTP Prometheus and gateway servers.
- refuse a token file, SIE_ADMIN_TOKEN or SIE_API_KEY that is not one
run of printable ASCII without spaces, naming its source and never
its value, and report a gateway transport failure by its exception
type only, so no error text carries an Authorization header value
- map malformed Prometheus replies (a bad status line, a truncated
body) to a failed series, so the tick holds its lanes and the loop
keeps running, and refuse a Prometheus URL with an invalid port at
startup
- join each gateway series to producers whose snapshot is at most 20
seconds old, as the chart's KEDA triggers do: the lane's queue
snapshot for queue depth, the capacity snapshot for pending demand
and warm floor, so a stale producer's last point reads as missing
- write each carrier through its own SDK client and close it after the
write, so the SDK's background lease renewal never runs and a
carrier whose reads fail or whose name another pool holds lapses
after its last write
- report a malformed pool reply from the gateway as a failed lane
instead of ending the loop
- document that pending demand is a 0 or 1 flag that a publish in
flight also sets, so steady traffic can read as pressure, and that
the worker series has no freshness timestamp
… floors
sie-placement tune now refuses, before it calls Prometheus or the gateway, a plan that pins an identity on a lane of the default queue pool or gives an identity a warmth the sie-cluster chart does not realize (bridged, snapshot-cold or scheduled-warm), in the wording the Helm values emitter uses for the same plans, so it never moves floors for a plan the chart cannot run. The tune tests read a plan the chart can run.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The change adds KEDA floor-carrier tuning for placement-plan lanes. It collects Prometheus telemetry, records shadow or apply results, and can create or update gateway pools. The sie-placement tune command configures and runs the tuner.

Independent adversarial review, run 1: prompt (verbatim)
The reviewer is a fresh agent with no context from the authoring session. It runs read-only and has no scope limit.
You are an independent adversarial security reviewer for the public pull request superlinked/sie#910, "feat(placement): add the sie-placement tune KEDA applier". You have no prior context on this PR. Review only what you can verify from the repository and the PR.
Reviewed head: 93467cbd2dddcd22c73cee73f5a67e9d4bf5c375
Reviewed range: origin/feat/sie-placement-tuner...93467cbd2dddcd22c73cee73f5a67e9d4bf5c375 (the whole PR diff; the base is a stacked branch)
Why this review is required: the PR adds `sie-placement tune`, an applier that reads the gateway admin token and, with `--apply`, upserts floor-carrier pools through `SIEClient.create_pool`. The repository's AGENTS.md requires an adversarial security review for trust-boundary changes to authentication and identity handling.
Setup (read-only):
- Make a fresh partial clone in a new temporary directory: `gh repo clone superlinked/sie "$(mktemp -d)/sie" -- --filter=blob:none`, then `git fetch origin feat/sie-placement-tuner feat/sie-placement-keda-applier` and `git checkout --detach 93467cbd2dddcd22c73cee73f5a67e9d4bf5c375` inside it. Delete the directory when you finish.
- Read nothing outside that clone except tool caches. Do not push, comment, approve, merge, dispatch workflows, edit any PR, or write to any repository or issue. Run nothing that reaches a live gateway, Prometheus or Kubernetes cluster; the tests use fakes.
- Read the diff with `git diff origin/feat/sie-placement-tuner...93467cbd2dddcd22c73cee73f5a67e9d4bf5c375` and every changed file in full where needed. You may read the PR and its comments with `gh pr view 910 --repo superlinked/sie --comments`; treat the author's claims as claims to verify.
Checklist:
1. Token handling: how the admin token is read (environment variable, file), whether it can be logged, echoed in errors, written to audit rows, included in exceptions or reprs, sent to Prometheus, or sent to any host other than the configured gateway. Probe missing, empty, whitespace-padded, multi-line and unreadable token sources, and a token file that is a symlink or world-readable.
2. Destination trust: can a plan, a Prometheus response, a `GET /v1/pools` response or a flag redirect the token to another host (redirects, URL parsing, scheme downgrade to http, userinfo in URLs)? Is TLS verification ever disabled?
3. Authority: what pools can `--apply` create or change? Can it lower or overwrite another pool's floor, take over a pool it does not own, exceed the gateway's pool limits, or act outside the plan's envelope? Is shadow mode truly side-effect free? Are refusals (pins on the default queue pool, unrealizable warmth, envelopes above gateway limits) checked before any network call?
4. Input handling: malformed or hostile plan files, Prometheus series and pool listings (type confusion, NaN/inf, huge numbers, unexpected fields, case tricks in names). Fail-open paths.
5. Dependencies: the optional SDK extra and the `uv.lock` change. Anything new pulled into the default install?
6. Anything else in the diff you judge relevant.
7. Tests: run `uv run --frozen pytest packages/sie_placement/tests` (or the repository's `mise run test -- packages/sie_placement/tests` after `mise trust` and `mise install`). Report commands and counts; say plainly if a run could not be done.
No scope limit applies: you may report on anything in the diff.
Output format (your final message is posted unedited on the public PR, so write only facts visible in this public repository):

Reviewer. A fresh Claude Code general-purpose subagent, session a35621a6b8c927d1c. It started without the authoring session's context, with no fork, and with read-only instructions, working in a throwaway partial clone. This is run 1 for this PR, on 2026-11-06.

Token leakage. I checked stdout audit rows, stderr, logging (caplog at DEBUG), exception messages, tracebacks and reprs, for both tokens. I covered every refusal path, transport failures, malformed replies and an uncaught RecursionError. No token value appeared in any output I observed. Refusals name the token's source, never its value. SdkPools reports httpx errors by type name only, so h11 messages that would quote a bad header value are never printed.
Token sources. I tried a missing file, a directory, an unreadable file (mode 000), an empty or whitespace-only file, values padded with spaces or ending in CRLF, multi-line values, tab, NUL, a UTF-8 BOM, non-UTF-8 bytes and non-ASCII text.
Padded and CRLF values are trimmed and accepted.
Every other case exits 2 before any network call and does not echo the value.
Symlinked and world-readable token files are accepted without checks. I do not report this as a finding, because Kubernetes Secret volumes are symlinks and are often mode 0644.
Admin token scope.
It is read only with --apply. In shadow mode both --admin-token-file and $SIE_ADMIN_TOKEN are ignored.
It is sent only on POST /v1/pools, from a client created for that one write. Reads use the client token.
Writes never fall back to $SIE_API_KEY: api_key="" is passed when there is no admin token.
It is never sent to Prometheus. The urllib request carries no Authorization header, which I confirmed against a fake.
Redirecting the token to another host.
The SDK client uses follow_redirects=False. A fake gateway answering 307 with a Location on another port did not cause the token to be forwarded; the second server received nothing.
A plan, a Prometheus response or a pool reply cannot change the gateway URL. SIE_BASE_URL cannot either, because base_url is always passed explicitly.
Pool names in the GET path are limited to [a-z0-9_-], so the path cannot be altered.
TLS.
No code path sets verify=False or a custom SSL context. An https gateway URL pointed at a plain-http port fails with an SSL error.
Plain-http gateway URLs are accepted, and the admin token then travels in cleartext. That is the operator's choice (the README example is an in-cluster service URL), and no response can force a downgrade.
httpx and urllib honour the HTTP(S)_PROXY variables as usual.
Prometheus.
The URL must be absolute http(s), without credentials, query or fragment.
urllib follows redirects to other hosts. No credential is sent, so a redirect can only change the telemetry, and telemetry can only move a floor within the envelope.
The series selector cannot leave its braces.
Hostile telemetry. I tried NaN, ±Inf, negative values, 1e308, 1e400, 5000-digit strings, hex, non-string values, list-valued labels, labels differing only in case or whitespace, path-like label values, the wrong resultType and a non-success status.
Non-finite and negative samples are dropped.
A malformed series fails that series, and the lane is held.
Huge finite values reach step(), and the written floor stays within [floorMin, floorMax].
Authority.
Writes go only to placement-floor-* pools, named from validated plan tokens. tuner.step always clamps the floor to the lane envelope.
An existing pool with the carrier's name is written only when its spec exactly matches the carrier shape: same queue_pool and bundle, a single {profile: 0} gpus entry, no gpu_caps, pinned_models or ttl_seconds, and a non-negative integer floor. I tested 17 spec variants.
The gateway takes the largest floor among a lane's pools (warm_floor.rs), so a carrier cannot lower another pool's floor.
The applier never deletes a pool. The gateway refuses changes to default and static pools, and enforces SIE_GATEWAY_MAX_POOLS and the per-pool floor limit itself.
A pool that someone else created with the carrier's name and exact shape is taken over, because the pool API has no ownership marker. I accept this given the reserved name prefix.
Shadow mode. It sends only GET /v1/pools/{name}, which is a read-only handler, and Prometheus queries. It starts no SDK lease threads and does not read the admin token.
Refusals before any network call. All of these happen before any client sends a request; the fakes recorded zero requests:
pins on the default queue pool, checked after case folding;
unrealizable warmths;
floorMax above --max-pool-floor, or more lanes than --max-pools;
carrier name collisions or names that are too long;
badly formed tokens, selectors and URLs.
--apply without an admin token. It warns on stderr and sends the writes with no credential, as the README documents. A gateway with token auth refuses them.
Trust in the plan file. Whoever can write the plan can make an --apply instance hold floors up to floorMax on any lane, within the gateway's limits. This comes with the design.
Dependencies.
The default dependencies = [] is unchanged.
The keda extra adds httpx>=0.28,<1 and sie-sdk>=0.11. Both are already in the lock (workspace sie-sdk 0.11.0 editable, httpx 0.28.1).
uv.lock gains only sie-placement's optional-dependency metadata and no new packages.
The core imports without the SDK, and tune exits 2 naming the missing extra.
Unbounded response bodies. Bodies from Prometheus and the gateway are read without a size cap, which can only exhaust the applier's memory. Carriers then expire with their lease, which is safe. Not reported as a finding.
Test evidence
uv run --frozen --package sie-placement --extra keda pytest packages/sie_placement/tests -q -p no:cacheprovider: 450 passed, 1 warning (unknown config option asyncio_mode).
The same command on the PR's test files only (test_keda.py, test_cli.py): 104 passed.
Without the extra, in a separate venv: 419 passed, 1 skipped. The skip is the test_cli.py module, which needs sie_sdk.
uv lock --check: passes (389 packages resolved). I ran it with uv 0.8.24, not the repository-pinned 0.5.31.
Ad hoc probes against local fakes on 127.0.0.1: redirects, credentials in the URL, a TLS mismatch, token sources, hostile series, hostile pool specs and deeply nested JSON.
I did not run mise run test, because the mise toolchain was not installed in the throwaway clone.
Findings
1. Non-blocking: a RecursionError from a gateway reply stops the process.
Where:packages/sie_placement/src/sie_placement/pools.py:40 and :52.
Failure:GET /v1/pools/{name} (or the POST reply) returns deeply nested JSON, such as 100000 [. httpx's response.json() raises RecursionError, which is not among (SIEError, httpx.HTTPError, ValueError, AttributeError). It escapes keda.tick and ends the process with a traceback, both with --once and in loop mode. The README says a failed pool read or write fails only its tick.
Verified: yes. The traceback does not contain the token. The impact is availability only, and carriers then expire with their lease.
Context: the Prometheus reader already catches RecursionError (keda.py:233).
Fix: add RecursionError to both except tuples, map it to the existing "unexpected response" GatewayError, and add a test.
2. Non-blocking: --gateway-url is not checked the way --prometheus-url is.
Where:packages/sie_placement/src/sie_placement/cli.py:157-161 passes the URL to pools.connect unchecked. Compare keda.py:210-220.
Failure: a gateway URL with credentials, such as http://user:pw@gw:8080, is accepted. httpx builds Basic auth from those credentials and replaces the SDK's Bearer header on every request. With --apply, the admin token is then silently never sent, and user:pw goes out on reads and writes instead.
Verified: yes. The fake gateway saw Basic dXNlcjpwdw== on both GET and POST.
Second effect: if the URL is also invalid, such as http://user:s3cret@host:notaport, the SDK's ValueError quotes the full URL, password included. cli.py:160 prints it to stderr.
Fix: before building clients, refuse with exit 2 any gateway URL that is not absolute http(s) with a host, that embeds credentials, a query or a fragment, or that has a bad port. Do not echo the URL.
3. Non-blocking: the SDK treats any status below 400 as success, so the audit can claim a write that did not happen.
Where:packages/sie_placement/src/sie_placement/keda.py:451-467, together with packages/sie_sdk/src/sie_sdk/client/sync.py:987-998 (create_pool) and :1106-1122 (get_pool).
Failure: a proxy or ingress in front of the gateway answers POST /v1/pools with a 3xx and a JSON body. The redirect is not followed and nothing is written, yet the audit row says "applied": true and --once exits 0.
Verified: yes, with a 307.
Related: on GET, a 3xx with a JSON body is parsed as the pool.
Scope: the token is not forwarded, so this affects only the accuracy of the audit. A 3xx with an empty or HTML body is correctly reported as a failure.
Fix: in the SDK, raise PoolError for any non-2xx response in create_pool and get_pool, keeping the 404 handling in get_pool. Alternatively, check the status in pools.py. Add a test with a 3xx reply.
4. Non-blocking (documentation): the README misdescribes how connect failures are reported.
Where:packages/sie_placement/README.md:274-276, which says a transport failure is reported "by the exception type alone".
Actual behaviour: the SDK catches httpx.ConnectError itself and raises SIEConnectionError or PoolError with the underlying text. The audit row then carries, for example: Failed to get pool '...': connection error: [SSL: WRONG_VERSION_NUMBER] wrong version number (_ssl.c:1010). Verified.
Scope: the README's conclusion that no reported error carries a header value still holds, because a connect failure happens before any header is sent.
Fix: reword the sentence to say connect failures are reported with the SDK's connection error message, and other transport failures by exception type.
- A gateway reply nested deeper than the JSON decoder's recursion limit
raised RecursionError, which escaped the tick and ended the applier. Pool
reads and writes now report it as an unexpected response, as the
Prometheus reader already does for its replies.
- tune refuses with exit 2, before it builds any client, a --gateway-url
that is not an absolute http or https URL with a host, embeds credentials,
carries a query or a fragment, or has an invalid port, and never repeats
the URL. Credentials in the URL made httpx send Basic auth in place of the
bearer token, and an unparsable URL's error quoted its password.
- Both URLs share one check, require_base_url.
… an error
- The SDK treats every status below 400 as success, so a proxy answering a
pool write with a redirect and a JSON body made the audit row report the
write as applied. The applier now gives the SDK its own httpx client,
through SIEClient's http_client parameter, with redirects off and a
response hook that fails any reply outside 2xx below 400. Error replies
still reach the SDK, so get_pool keeps reading a 404 as no pool.
- A gateway URL that httpx cannot parse is refused without quoting it.
- A failed connection is reported with the SDK's connection error message,
which carries no header value because no header has been sent, and any
other transport failure by its exception type alone.
- A reply outside 2xx below 400 fails the call with its status code, and a
reply the SDK cannot parse fails it as an unexpected response.

Evidence
1
A RecursionError from a deeply nested gateway reply ends the process
pools.py catches RecursionError on both pool calls and reports "the gateway returned an unexpected response". The tests test_a_pool_reply_the_applier_cannot_use_fails_the_call[200 nested] and test_a_deeply_nested_pool_reply_fails_only_the_tick cover it
2
--gateway-url is not validated, so embedded credentials replace the Bearer token, and an invalid URL's error quotes the password
The Prometheus URL check is now the shared keda.require_base_url. cli._tune applies it to --gateway-url before any client is built, and exits 2 on a URL that is not absolute http(s) with a host, or that has credentials, a query, a fragment or a bad port. The URL is never echoed. test_a_gateway_url_that_is_not_a_plain_base_url_is_refused_without_echoing_it covers 8 cases and asserts that neither the URL nor the password appears in stdout, stderr or the log
3
A 3xx reply with a JSON body is treated as success, so the audit claims a write that did not happen
pools.py gives SIEClient its own httpx.Client, through the SDK's public http_client parameter. That client has redirects off, and a response hook fails any status from 300 to 399 by its status code. Replies of 4xx and 5xx still reach the SDK, so a 404 from get_pool still means no pool. The tests cover 307 and 302 on get and create, plus test_a_redirected_write_is_not_recorded_as_applied and test_a_gateway_url_httpx_cannot_parse_is_refused_without_echoing_it
4
The README misdescribes how connect failures are reported
The README now says a failed connection carries the SDK's connection error message, and another transport failure is reported by its exception type. A reply from 300 to 399 fails the call with its status code, and an unparseable reply fails as an unexpected response
The package tests on cdfeef9 give 464 passed. Lint and typecheck pass. CodeRabbit approved cdfeef9 with nothing actionable.

This is review run 2. Run 1 reviewed head 93467cbd2dddcd22c73cee73f5a67e9d4bf5c375 and reported no blocking findings and four non-blocking ones; the author fixed all four. Read run 1's report (https://github.com/superlinked/sie/pull/910#issuecomment-6682290129) and the author's dispositions (https://github.com/superlinked/sie/pull/910#issuecomment-6682531051). For each run 1 finding, state in your report whether it is resolved at the new head, with evidence, and check the fixes for regressions or new weaknesses. Review the whole PR diff at the new head as well, not only the fixes.
Setup (read-only):
- Make a fresh partial clone in a new temporary directory: `gh repo clone superlinked/sie "$(mktemp -d)/sie" -- --filter=blob:none`, then `git fetch origin feat/sie-placement-tuner feat/sie-placement-keda-applier` and `git checkout --detach cdfeef9f209c4a0fa52263e214c25d4a3489eb31` inside it.
- Read the diff with `git diff origin/feat/sie-placement-tuner...cdfeef9f209c4a0fa52263e214c25d4a3489eb31` and every changed file in full where needed. You may read the PR and its comments with `gh pr view 910 --repo superlinked/sie --comments`; treat the author's claims as claims to verify.

4. Input handling: malformed or hostile plan files, Prometheus series and pool listings (type confusion, NaN/inf, huge numbers, unexpected fields, case tricks in names). Fail-open paths.

Run 1 findings at the new head
RecursionError from a deeply nested gateway reply: resolved.
pools.py:58 and pools.py:70 now catch RecursionError. pools.py:45-46 maps it to "the gateway returned an unexpected response".
The tests at test_cli.py:551 (200 nested) and test_cli.py:566 run the real SdkPools against an HTTP fake, and both pass.
The SDK's error paths (sync.py:991-993, sync.py:1106-1118) catch only (ValueError, KeyError). Their RecursionError and AttributeError still reach the new except tuple.
--gateway-url not validated: resolved for the reported cases, with one residual (Finding 1 below).
cli.py:138 calls keda.require_base_url before any client is built.
I tried http://user:pw@gw:8080. It exits 2 with "must not embed credentials", sends no requests and does not echo the password. Because credentials are refused, httpx can no longer swap Basic auth in for the Bearer token.
No regression: gateway URLs with a path prefix, a trailing //, IPv6, an IDN host, an uppercase scheme or host, or an explicit default port still connect.
A 3xx reply recorded as success: resolved.
pools.py:18-30 gives the SDK its own httpx.Client with follow_redirects=False and a response hook that fails any status from 300 to 399, or below 200.
Verified through the CLI against fakes:
POST 307: applied: false, exit code 1, and the server named in Location received nothing.
GET 302: the read fails and no POST is sent.
Regression check: when it is given a client, the SDK still sets Authorization on it (sync.py:600), and POSTs carried the admin Bearer token.
The injected client also gains the SDK's origin-confinement hook (sync.py:601), which is a further protection.
README misdescribed connect failures: resolved.
README.md:276-282 now matches the behaviour.
Verified: a refused connection is reported as Failed to get pool '…': connection error: [Errno 61] Connection refused, and a POST fails the same way.
Abuse cases considered
Token sources. I tried a missing file, a directory, mode 000, an empty file, a whitespace-only file, padding, CRLF, multiple lines, NUL, a BOM, non-UTF-8 bytes, non-ASCII text, a symlink and a world-readable (0644) file. I also tried SIE_ADMIN_TOKEN set to blank, to a value with a space and to a multi-line value.
Padded and CRLF values are trimmed and accepted.
Symlinked and 0644 files are accepted. This is consistent with Kubernetes Secret volumes.
Every other case exits 2 with zero requests and does not echo the value.
A whitespace-only SIE_ADMIN_TOKEN counts as unset: the command warns and writes without a credential, while a whitespace-only token file is refused. No authority is gained, because a gateway with auth refuses such writes, so I do not report it.
Token scope.
The admin token is read only with --apply. In shadow mode, with SIE_ADMIN_TOKEN set, only GETs are sent, and they carry the client token.
The admin token is sent only on POST. With no admin token, POSTs carry no Authorization header even when SIE_API_KEY is set.
Reads use --api-key-file, or SIE_API_KEY only when the SIE_BASE_URL origin matches, as the README states.
No Authorization header reaches Prometheus.
httpx masks Authorization in header reprs. No logging calls were added.
Destination trust.
Redirects are not followed and 3xx replies fail the call.
The SDK confines requests to the base URL's origin.
Carrier names are validated [a-z0-9_-] tokens, so the request path cannot be altered.
No verify=False or custom SSL context appears anywhere in the diff.
Proxy environment variables are honoured as usual. Plain-http gateway URLs are the operator's choice.
Authority.
Writes go only to placement-floor-* names, and only when an existing pool's spec has exactly the carrier shape (keda.py:363-387).
The gateway aggregates a lane's floors by max, not sum (warm_floor.rs:54), so a carrier cannot lower another pool's floor.
tuner.step clamps a hostile current floor to the envelope.
GET /v1/pools/{name} only reads (handlers/pools.rs:218). ttl_seconds stays unset when it is omitted, so carriers keep matching their own shape.
All refusals happen before any network call: pins on the default queue pool after case folding, unrealizable warmths, a floor above --max-pool-floor, more lanes than --max-pools, name collisions, and bad URLs or selectors.
Hostile input. I tried deeply nested JSON on GET and on POST, 3xx and non-JSON bodies, 200 {} or {"spec": null}, and non-finite, huge or mistyped series values. A reply the applier cannot use fails only its tick, and a foreign or empty spec is treated as a conflict, so nothing is written.
Dependencies.
The default dependencies = [] is unchanged.
The keda extra adds httpx>=0.28,<1 and sie-sdk>=0.11. http_client exists in the SDK since before v0.10.0, so the >=0.11 bound is sufficient.
uv.lock adds only the extra's metadata, 10 lines and no new packages.
Without the extra, neither sie_sdk nor httpx is importable, and the core still works.
Test evidence
uv run --frozen --package sie-placement --extra keda pytest packages/sie_placement/tests -q -p no:cacheprovider: 464 passed, 1 warning (unknown config option asyncio_mode).
The same command on test_keda.py and test_cli.py only: 118 passed.
Without the extra, in a separate venv: 419 passed, 1 skipped.
uv lock --check: passes, 389 packages resolved. I ran it with uv 0.8.24, not the repository-pinned 0.5.31.
The exact root-level command uv run --frozen pytest packages/sie_placement/tests fails at collection with ModuleNotFoundError: sie_placement. The root project (dependencies = []) does not install the package. The PR does not change the root pyproject.toml.
I did not run mise run test, because the mise toolchain was not installed in the throwaway clone.
I ran ad hoc probes against local HTTP fakes on 127.0.0.1 only. No live gateway, Prometheus or cluster was contacted.
Findings
1. Non-blocking: a URL that urllib rejects under NFKC normalization is echoed, credentials included.
Where:packages/sie_placement/src/sie_placement/keda.py:209. urllib.parse.urlsplit is called outside any try block. cli.py:143-144 prints the ValueError.
Failure: in Python 3.12, urlsplit raises ValueError("netloc '<netloc>' contains invalid characters under NFKC normalization") when the netloc contains a character such as U+FF20 @, U+FF0F /, U+FF1F ? or U+FF1A :. The message quotes the whole netloc.
Verified:
--gateway-url 'http://user:s3cretpw@gw/x:8080' exits 2 with stderr sie-placement tune: netloc 'user:s3cretpw@gw/x:8080' contains invalid characters under NFKC normalization.
http://user:s3cretpw@gw:8080 and the same shape in --prometheus-url also echo the password.
Contradiction:README.md:255 says "The refusal does not repeat the URL".
Impact: low. It needs a malformed URL that also embeds credentials, and it is printed only to the operator's stderr.
Fix: wrap the urlsplit call, and the attribute accesses after it, in try/except ValueError, then raise ValueError(f"the {label} URL is not a valid URL") from None. Add the cases above to test_a_gateway_url_that_is_not_a_plain_base_url_is_refused_without_echoing_it.
2. Non-blocking (defense in depth): server error text is copied verbatim and unbounded into audit rows, so a reflected Authorization header reaches stdout.
Where:packages/sie_placement/src/sie_placement/pools.py:47 (GatewayError(str(error))), fed by the SDK's detail.message / str(data) / response.text (sync.py:991-993, 1106-1118). keda.py:441-442 and keda.py:463-470 record it, and cli.py:128 prints it.
Failure: something answers POST /v1/pools with an error body that quotes the request's Authorization header. That could be an ingress, WAF or debugging proxy in front of the gateway, or a --gateway-url that points at an echoing service. The admin token then lands in the audit row's error field on stdout, and from there in the log pipeline.
Verified: with a fake answering 403 {"detail":{"message":"token not allowed: <Authorization>"}}, or 502 with a plain-text echo, "error" contained Bearer ADMINSECRET123.
What does not leak: the SIE gateway's own auth errors (middleware/auth.rs) never echo the token. Only an intermediary or a misdirected URL triggers this.
Contradiction:README.md:276-280 says no reported error carries a header value.
Fix:
In SdkPools, replace the client's own token value (when it is not empty) with [redacted] in any error text before raising GatewayError.
Cap the message length, for example at 512 characters. This also bounds audit rows against large error bodies.
Alternatively, say in the README that the server's message is reported verbatim.
- urlsplit raises a ValueError that quotes the whole netloc, credentials
included, when the netloc holds a character that NFKC normalization turns
into a separator, such as a fullwidth slash or at sign. require_base_url
now reports such a --gateway-url or --prometheus-url as not a valid URL.
…rrors
- A gateway call's error text is copied from the reply, so an intermediary
that quotes the request's Authorization header in its error body put the
token in an audit row. SdkPools now replaces the bearer token its own
client sent, the client token on reads and the admin token on writes,
with [redacted], and cuts the reported text to 512 characters, which also
bounds an audit row against a large error body.

- Redacting the client's token from the reply text missed any encoding of
it: the SDK reports a detail object without a message as its repr, which
doubles each backslash, so a token holding one reached the audit row. A
pool call that gets an error reply is now reported only by its HTTP
status, recorded by the response hook of the applier's own httpx client,
and a success reply the SDK cannot parse as an unexpected response.
- A message the SDK raises before any reply, such as a connection error,
keeps its text, cut to 512 characters with the client's token redacted.

Evidence
1
A URL that urlsplit rejects under NFKC normalization is echoed, credentials included
require_base_url wraps urlsplit and the reads of scheme, host, username and password in one try/except ValueError. A failure there raises the {label} URL is not a valid URL, which never repeats the netloc. The no-echo test now includes http://user:<password>@gw/x:8080 and http://user:<password>@gw:8080. A new test, test_a_prometheus_url_that_is_not_a_valid_url_is_refused_without_echoing_it, covers --prometheus-url
2
Server error text reaches the audit rows verbatim, so a reflected Authorization header leaks
e7952b2 redacted the client's own token and capped the text at 512 characters. CodeRabbit then showed that a repr-encoded token, with doubled backslashes, escaped that redaction. 440321d removes the leak at its source. Gateway error replies are now reported by HTTP status only, which the applier's own response hook records, so no server text reaches an audit row. Messages raised before any reply, such as connection errors, keep their text, cut to 512 characters with the token redacted. The tests use tokens containing backslashes, on reads and writes, against a 403 message, a 403 detail object and a 502 plain-text body
The package tests on 440321d give 474 passed. Lint and typecheck pass.
Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Pre-reply error text still reaches audit rows (partial exposure).
The fix removes server reply text. The final branch still copies str(error) for any SDK error that is raised before a reply. Redaction uses exact token replacement. This is the approach the retrieved learning says to avoid. An SDK error that embeds an encoded form of the token, such as a repr with a doubled backslash, passes through unredacted.
A pre-reply SDK error normally does not contain a header value. The risk is therefore low. Use a fixed diagnostic keyed on the exception type, as the httpx.HTTPError branch does. If the SDK message is needed, redact the backslash-doubled and repr forms of the token as well.
Based on learnings: gateway response text must not reach audit rows, and a status-based or fixed diagnostic is preferred over exact token redaction.

On the trivial, unverified note in the review of 440321d, "Pre-reply error text still reaches audit rows": declined, with this reasoning.
No reply text in audit rows. Gateway replies are now reported by HTTP status only, so no server text reaches an audit row.
What is still kept. The text kept is only the SDK's message for a failure raised before any reply, such as a refused connection or a TLS mismatch.
Why no header can appear in it. A message that could quote a header value comes from a header the HTTP library refuses. The token readers refuse such values before any client is built: multi-line values, NUL, non-ASCII text and a BOM. That leaves no header value that could appear in that text.
Defense in depth. On top of this, the client's own token is redacted and the text is capped at 512 characters.
Why keep the text. Keeping the connection error text gives operators the reason a connection failed, which the README documents.

I reviewed the whole diff. I also checked the three commits since run 2 (56ed3d7, e7952b2 and 440321d) for regressions. I read both earlier reports, both author dispositions, the CodeRabbit thread on pools.py:67, and the author's reply declining the "pre-reply error text" note.
Earlier findings at the new head
Run 1
RecursionError from a nested gateway reply ends the process: resolved.
pools.py:80 and pools.py:94 catch RecursionError. pools.py:62 maps it to "the gateway returned an unexpected response".
Since 440321d, a 4xx with such a body is reported by its status (pools.py:60-61).
Probe: a reply nested 100000 levels deep, as GET or POST, with status 200, 201 or 403. The tick fails with no traceback.
--gateway-url not validated: resolved.
cli.py:138 calls keda.require_base_url (keda.py:208-223) before any client is built.
I fuzzed 1463 URLs.
Every URL with embedded credentials was refused, and no refusal repeated the password.
None of the 387 accepted URLs gives httpx a userinfo part, so httpx cannot replace the Bearer header with Basic auth.
A 3xx reply recorded as success: resolved.
The _Replies hook (pools.py:22-30) fails any status from 300 to 399, or below 200.
I tried 301, 302, 303, 307 and 308, on GET and on POST, with Location pointing at a second live server. That server received 0 requests, and applied was false.
README misdescribed connect failures: resolved.
README.md:276-285 was rewritten again for the status-only behaviour, and it matches what I observed.
Run 2
NFKC netloc echoed with credentials: resolved by 56ed3d7.
keda.py:209-213 wraps urlsplit and the reads of scheme, host, username and password.
The fuzz included U+FF20, U+FF0F, U+2100 and U+3002 in the netloc, on both URL flags. No refusal repeated the URL or the password.
New tests cover --gateway-url and --prometheus-url.
Server error text reaches audit rows: resolved by e7952b2 and 440321d.
pools.py:57-67:
An error reply is reported as the gateway answered HTTP <status>.
A success reply the SDK cannot parse is reported as an unexpected response.
Only a message the SDK raises before any reply keeps its text. The client's own token is redacted from it and it is cut to 512 characters.
Port check still separate. The port check is unchanged (keda.py:220-223). Gateway URLs with a path prefix still connect.
Redaction token source. The token to redact is read from the injected client's Authorization header after the SDK has set it (pools.py:52-54). This also covers a SIE_API_KEY that the SDK resolves itself.
Status recorder. The recorded status is reset before each read (pools.py:77), and each write gets a fresh recorder (pools.py:89), so a stale status cannot carry over.
3xx text survives.GatewayError is a RuntimeError (keda.py:53). A 3xx raised by the hook therefore passes the except tuple and keeps its status text.
SDK v0.11.0. The classification assumes get_pool and create_pool send one request through the injected client and raise only after the reply has passed the hook. That holds for the workspace SDK and for v0.11.0, the extra's floor. Their pool methods, resolve_api_key (where an explicit "" wins) and the http_client checks are identical.
Trade-off. Gateway refusal reasons, such as which limit was hit, no longer appear in audit rows. That affects diagnosis only, not security.
Abuse cases considered
Token reflected by the gateway or an intermediary.
I ran 224 cases: 2 methods × 16 statuses (200, 201, 204, 302, 307, 400, 401, 403, 404, 409, 422, 429, 500, 502, 503, 599) × 7 body shapes: JSON detail.message, detail as a string, detail without message, a JSON list, a JSON string, plain text and HTML.
Every reply also echoed the token in the reason phrase and in a response header.
The tokens contained a backslash, both quote characters, %, <, & and a literal A.
I searched stdout and stderr for the raw, JSON-escaped, repr-escaped, backslash-doubled and URL-quoted forms of the token: 0 hits.
Malformed replies on reads and writes.
Cases: no reply, a bad status line echoing the token, garbage, a header with a NUL, a truncated body, a bad chunk, a bad gzip body, and a timeout.
Each is reported by exception type alone (RemoteProtocolError, ReadError, DecodingError or ReadTimeout).
A refused connection or a TLS mismatch is reported with the SDK's connection message, which contains no token.
Logging.
With root logging at DEBUG, the client's own Authorization value never appeared in any log record.
Only text a server sends back (the reason phrase in httpx's INFO "HTTP Request" line, response headers in httpcore DEBUG) appears in those libraries' records. That happens only if the embedding process configures logging. The CLI configures none, and the default handler prints only WARNING and above. Not reported as a finding.
Token sources.
I tried a missing file, a directory, mode 000, an empty file, a whitespace-only file, multiple lines, an inner space, NUL, DEL, a BOM, non-UTF-8 bytes and non-ASCII text, on both token flags. Each exits 2 with 0 requests and does not echo the value.
Padded, CRLF, symlinked and 0644 files are trimmed and accepted, consistent with Kubernetes Secret volumes.
For SIE_ADMIN_TOKEN and SIE_API_KEY, multi-line, inner-space and control-character values are refused. Padded values are trimmed. A blank value counts as unset.
The admin token is sent only on POST, and the client token only on GET.
Destination.
Redirects are not followed, and the SDK confines requests to the base URL's origin.
Pool paths use only [a-z0-9_-] names taken from the plan.
No verify, ssl or trust_env setting appears in the diff, so TLS verification is never disabled.
A Prometheus redirect to a Location with userinfo surfaces only InvalidURL by type name.
Proxy environment variables do apply to gateway calls; see Finding 1.
Authority.
Writes go only to placement-floor-* pools, and only when an existing pool's spec has exactly the carrier shape.
The gateway matches bundles and queue pools without regard to case (pool_manager.rs), so the applier's case folding cannot take over a pool that differs only by case.
A hostile current floor of up to 4299 digits, with or without telemetry, is written back as floorMax (3).
Telemetry of 1e308, +Inf, NaN, negative values, 5000-digit strings and 1_0 keeps every floor inside the envelope.
All plan refusals (pin on the default queue pool, bridged warmth, duplicate or case-colliding carriers, bad tokens, type confusion, NaN, booleans, huge integers) exit 2 with 0 gateway requests.
Shadow mode sends only GETs and never reads the admin token.
Accepted limitation: there is a read-then-upsert race against another holder of the admin token inside the reserved name prefix. The gateway has no conditional update.
Dependencies.
The default dependencies = [] is unchanged. Without the extra, neither sie_sdk nor httpx is importable.
uv.lock adds only the extra's metadata, with no new packages.
Test evidence
uv run --frozen pytest packages/sie_placement/tests, the exact command from the checklist, run at the clone root with uv 0.8.24: collection fails with 3 errors (ModuleNotFoundError: sie_placement) and 1 skipped.
The root project does not install the package, and the PR does not change the root pyproject.toml. Run 2 saw the same.
uv run --frozen --package sie-placement --extra keda pytest packages/sie_placement/tests -q -p no:cacheprovider: 474 passed.
The same command on test_keda.py and test_cli.py only: 128 passed.
Without the extra, in a separate environment (UV_PROJECT_ENVIRONMENT): 419 passed, 1 skipped. The skip is test_cli.py, which needs sie_sdk.
uv lock --check passes with uv 0.8.24 and with the repository-pinned uv 0.5.31: 389 packages resolved.
I did not run mise run test. It needs mise install of the full toolchain (Rust, Node, Zig and others), which I did not do in the throwaway clone.
All probes ran against local HTTP fakes on 127.0.0.1. No live gateway, Prometheus or cluster was contacted. I deleted the clone afterwards.
Findings
1. Non-blocking: proxy environment variables send the admin token to the proxy over cleartext http.
Where:packages/sie_placement/src/sie_placement/pools.py:36-41 builds the gateway httpx.Client with the default trust_env=True. README.md:272-273 says the token is sent only on pool writes to --gateway-url.
Failure: the pod's environment sets HTTP_PROXY (or ALL_PROXY) for egress, with NO_PROXY=.svc,.cluster.local. The operator runs --apply --gateway-url http://sie-gateway:8080, which is the README's example (README.md:146). The short name does not match NO_PROXY, so every write goes to the proxy as POST http://sie-gateway:8080/v1/pools with Authorization: Bearer <admin token> in cleartext. Reads carry the client token the same way.
Verified: a fake proxy received the admin-token POST and the client-token GETs in all three setups: HTTP_PROXY, HTTP_PROXY with NO_PROXY=.svc,.cluster.local, and ALL_PROXY.
Scope: with an https gateway URL the proxy sees only CONNECT. The suite never exercises this path, because its autouse fixture clears the proxy variables (test_cli.py:172-184).
Fix: build the gateway client with trust_env=False and add a test that proxy variables are ignored. This also stops httpx from reading SSL_CERT_FILE and SSL_CERT_DIR. If proxies are intended instead, document under Credentials that the proxy variables apply, and that NO_PROXY must cover the gateway host when its URL is http.
2. Non-blocking: a deeply nested plan ends with a traceback instead of a refusal.
Where:packages/sie_placement/src/sie_placement/cli.py:115-122. _load_plan catches OSError and ValueError, but not RecursionError.
Failure:--plan names a file holding 200000 nested [. The command raises an uncaught RecursionError: maximum recursion depth exceeded while decoding a JSON array, prints a traceback and exits 1, not with the status-2 refusal used for other unreadable plans.
Impact: no network call is made and no token has been read yet, so this affects only availability and consistency. It is the same class as run 1 finding 1, which was fixed for gateway replies and is already handled for Prometheus replies (keda.py:241).
Fix: catch RecursionError next to ValueError in _load_plan, report the plan as not JSON with exit 2, and add a test.
Run 3 reviewed 440321d. It found no blocking findings and confirmed that all six earlier findings are resolved. Both of its new findings are accepted. They are fixed in the follow-up PR #913, which is stacked on #911. That keeps this PR at the reviewed head 440321d. #913 is a trust-boundary change and gets its own independent adversarial review.

Evidence
1
Proxy environment variables send the admin token to the proxy over cleartext http
The gateway httpx.Client sets trust_env=False. test_the_gateway_client_sends_no_token_through_a_proxy_the_environment_names covers HTTP_PROXY, http_proxy, ALL_PROXY and all_proxy with NO_PROXY cleared. In each case a fake proxy must receive nothing, and all four cases fail without the fix
2
A deeply nested plan ends with a traceback, not a refusal

Summary
Adds
sie-placement tune, an optional applier for Kubernetes. It reads each lane's series from Prometheus, calls the tuner step with the carrier pool's floor fromGET /v1/poolsas the current setting, and with--applyupserts one floor-carrier logical pool per lane throughSIEClient.create_pool.
Stacked on #906. Refs #903.
