Summary

Adds a text encode path for google/embeddinggemma-2 (Apache-2.0, ungated, 744,371,512 parameters, released 2026-09-14). The catalog entry is pinned to revision f9972ac22e696a105c482202646979e33e4b5a1e. The checkpoint uses the native EmbeddingGemma2Model (model_type: embedding_gemma2) and ships no custom modeling code, so nothing is loaded with trust_remote_code.

Transformers version and bundle

EmbeddingGemma2Model / embedding_gemma2 first shipped in transformers 5.19.0 (2026-10-06). Tags v5.18.0 and v5.18.1 do not contain the module; v5.19.0 does. Later 5.x releases (through 5.22.1 as of this PR) also contain it.

The model is routed only to the transformers5 bundle. The default bundle stays on transformers==4.57.6, which cannot import the class. This PR builds on #878, which raised the transformers5 floor to >=5.19,<6 and pins 5.19.0 in the saved transformers5 locks. Global pins are unchanged: root uv.lock / default bundle stay at transformers 4.57.6, and sentence-transformers stays ==5.7.0.

Upstream recommends Sentence Transformers >=6.1.0 for prompts, pooling, and normalization. This bundle cannot use that wrapper, so the adapter applies the text recipe itself.

Modalities

Text only in this PR.

  • Mean pooling over non-padding tokens of last_hidden_state, with the task prompt included in the pool (include_prompt: true on the published pooling module).
  • L2 normalization in float32. Float16 is not used (the card reports NaN activations); CUDA uses bfloat16 and other devices use float32.
  • Query prompt: task: search result | query:
  • Document prompt: title: none | text:
  • Matryoshka prefixes 128, 256, 512, and native 768. options.truncate_dim slices and re-normalizes. The catalog width stays 768.
  • Text-only load sets vision_config=None and audio_config=None (the card's ~270M deployment of the 744M checkpoint).

Image, audio, and video are refused rather than approximated:

  • Images: SIE can decode bytes to PIL, but EmbeddingGemma 2 images go through EmbeddingGemma2Processor soft-tokens (max_soft_tokens), image_position_ids, and <|image|> expansion. The shared image preprocessor does not build those.
  • Audio: SIE's audio preprocessor emits 16 kHz speech PCM. This model wants Gemma4AudioFeatureExtractor features and audio placeholder tokens.
  • Video: SIE samples frames as images. This model uses a separate video token, pixel_values_videos, fps sampling, and optional timestamps. Feeding frames as images would not match the card.

Testing

Unit and config tests cover bundle routing, the 5.19 gate, mean pooling, query/document prompts, Matryoshka slice-then-renormalize, and the refusal of non-text inputs. They do not load weights.

ruff format --check and ruff check passed on the new adapter and tests. Pytest: test_embedding_gemma2 (adapter + config), test_bundle_coverage, test_transformers_dependency_policy, test_adapter_revision_contract, and test_model_yaml_filenames passed.

GPU check (L4). The image follows Dockerfile.cuda12 for BUNDLE=transformers5 and is built from the saved 5.19.0 lock. Through a real sie-server, the model loads text-only and returns 768-d (and truncate_dim=256) unit-norm vectors. Against the upstream Sentence Transformers 6.2.0 wrapper on the same transformers 5.19.0, with the card's query/document prompts, on 4 queries and 5 documents:

reference min cosine, queries min cosine, documents min cosine, queries at 256
bfloat16 1.00000 1.00000 1.00000
float32 0.99994 0.99964 0.99995

Top-1 retrieval matches the reference for every query. A full MTEB-scale quality run is not part of this PR.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added support for Google EmbeddingGemma 2 to generate dense text embeddings, with query and document templates and configurable output dimensions.
    • The model is available through the Transformers 5 bundle and requires Transformers 5.19.0 or newer.
    • Text is the supported input type, and dense embeddings are the supported output mode. Other input types and output modes are unavailable for this model.

Walkthrough

Adds a Transformers 5 profile for google/embeddinggemma-2 and a text-only adapter that produces dense embeddings. The profile specifies a pinned model revision and runtime settings. Tests cover configuration, model loading, precision selection, and encoding.

packages/sie_server/models/google__embeddinggemma-2.yaml, packages/sie_server/bundles/transformers5.yaml, packages/sie_server/README.md, packages/sie_server/tests/config/test_embedding_gemma2.py
Adds the model profile and registers the adapter in the Transformers 5 bundle. Documents the Transformers 5.19.0 minimum. The configured bundle range remains >=5.19,<6. Configuration tests check the profile and bundle routing.
Adapter configuration and model loading
packages/sie_server/src/sie_server/adapters/embedding_gemma2/adapter.py, packages/sie_server/tests/adapters/test_embedding_gemma2.py
Adds adapter initialization and model loading. Loading requires Transformers 5.19.0 or newer, disables remote code, clears vision and audio configs, validates the embedding dimension, and selects precision based on the device.
Text encoding and output validation
packages/sie_server/src/sie_server/adapters/embedding_gemma2/adapter.py, packages/sie_server/tests/adapters/test_embedding_gemma2.py
Adds prompt handling, text-only input checks, masked mean pooling, optional Matryoshka truncation, and optional normalization. Tests cover encoding options and validation errors.

google/embeddinggemma-2 uses native EmbeddingGemma2Model, which first
shipped in transformers 5.19.0. Serve the text profile from the
transformers5 bundle without moving the locked 5.17.0 pin.
