Follow-up to #811. Its independent review (comment) reported five non-blocking findings. This PR fixes all five.

1. Gateway: only a later Authorization value carries a token

Before. Take a request with an empty or blank first Authorization value, Authorization: Bearer A as a later value, and x-api-key: B. The gateway authenticated it as B and logged no warning. authorization_values_disagree returned false for it, so it was also outside the refusal planned for 0.13.0.

Now. authorization_values_disagree is also true when the first value carries no token and a later value carries one.

  • Such a request logs the repeated-Authorization warning once. The existing text, "The gateway ignored the later Authorization values", is accurate for it.
  • Which header authenticates is unchanged. x-api-key still decides, and nothing new is refused in this release.
  • The 0.13.0 refusal does not exist in code yet, so no gate is added here. That refusal is documented for the requests this predicate selects, and this shape is now one of them.
  • Without x-api-key, the shape is still refused with 401 and logs nothing.

2. Docs: which Authorization value the gateway reads

Several documents said a repeated Authorization header "uses its first value", or that Authorization is used whenever both headers are sent. They now all say the same thing:

  • The first Authorization value decides when it carries a token, and x-api-key is then ignored. When that value is empty or blank, x-api-key decides. An unreadable first value is refused, and Bearer alone counts as the token Bearer.
  • Later Authorization values are ignored.
  • A repeated header whose values carry different tokens, include one the gateway cannot read, or carry a token only after the first value logs a warning until 0.13.0. From 0.13.0 it is refused.

Updated: COMPATIBILITY.md (server item, gateway items and the 0.13.0 table row), SECURITY.md, packages/sie_gateway/README.md, packages/sie_gateway/docs/architecture-guide.md, and deploy/helm/sie-cluster/README.md.

The sweep also found these, now updated:

  • packages/sie_server/README.md and the server_auth.py docstrings, which compare the server with the gateway.
  • The apiKeyAuth description in the gateway OpenAPI spec (openapi.rs, its test, and openapi.json regenerated with mise run openapi -- --gateway-only).
  • examples/coding-agent-claude-code/README.md.

3. Server: the token's hard-link check

Before. Removing duplicate names (#811) did not cover every case. A scan could still see more temporary links than ever existed at the same time:

  • a temporary link renamed during the scan, or
  • a temporary link added before the listing and removed after it.

Either one balanced the count, so a token with a foreign hard link was accepted. The cleanup could also unlink whatever had replaced an entry after its lstat.

Now (_drop_temporary_links):

  • After the temporary links are removed, fstat runs again, and the token is accepted only with one link left.
  • The balanced count still decides when a read-only directory kept every temporary link in place, meaning every removal failed with EACCES or EROFS and the count did not change. This keeps the existing support for a read-only data directory. In such a directory nobody can rename or add entries, so the listing is accurate.
  • Each temporary name is checked with lstat right before it is unlinked, and is unlinked only if it still names the token's inode.
  • A concurrent first start is unaffected. Once auth-token exists, a start links only its own new inode, so after the cleanup a legitimate token always has one link left. test_concurrent_first_starts_agree_on_one_token still passes.

What remains. POSIX has no "unlink if it is still this inode" call, so a short window remains between that lstat and the unlink. Exploiting it requires write access to the token directory. That means the owner or root, now that the directory must have mode 0700 and, on macOS, no access control list. Either can already replace the token itself. The only names exposed are temporary-file names, which only sie-server creates.

4. Server: a macOS access control list on the token directory or the token file

Before. The privacy checks read only the mode bits. On macOS a 0700 directory with an ACL entry such as everyone allow add_file,add_subdirectory,delete_child passed, and so did a token file with everyone allow read.

Now. One helper reads the ACL of an open descriptor with acl_get_fd_np from libSystem, through the standard-library ctypes, so no new dependency is added.

  • Where it runs. The helper runs on the token directory, which check_private_directory now opens and checks with fstat, and on the open token file.
  • What it refuses. It walks the entries and refuses any entry that is not a deny entry. Deny entries, such as the group:everyone deny delete that macOS puts on a home folder, only take access away, so they are accepted.
  • It fails closed.
    • An entry whose kind cannot be read is refused.
    • An ACL that cannot be read is refused.
    • Only ENOENT and ENOTSUP mean there is no ACL.
  • Messages name the path to fix.
    • For the file: delete it to have a new token generated, or run chmod -N on the file.
    • For the directory: remove the allow entries with chmod -a#, or use a directory of its own. The message does not suggest chmod -N there, because that also removes deny entries.
  • Linux. POSIX ACLs show up in the group mode bits, so the existing mode checks cover them.
  • Docs. The server README documents the rule.

5. Tests that show which header authenticated

  • repeated_authorization_after_an_empty_one no longer repeats the x-api-key token in a later Authorization value. Its passing cases now pass only if x-api-key decided.
  • New: middleware_lets_x_api_key_decide_after_an_empty_authorization_and_warns. It uses distinct tokens and asserts, for each case, the status, the warning count and request_token_id:
    • the shape from finding 1 on a regular route, with a later token that is valid and one that is unknown (200, one warning, token id of x-api-key)
    • the admin route with the admin token in x-api-key (200, one warning)
    • the admin token only in a later Authorization value (403, no warning)
    • no x-api-key (401, no warning)

Tests added (server)

All drive the real read_stored_token with real hard links. owned_files is wrapped only to inject the concurrent change at a fixed point.

  • test_a_temporary_link_renamed_during_the_scan_does_not_hide_a_foreign_link
  • test_a_temporary_link_added_before_and_removed_after_the_listing_does_not_hide_a_foreign_link
  • test_a_temporary_name_that_no_longer_holds_the_token_is_not_removed: the replacement file survives, and the token is refused.
  • test_a_temporary_link_listed_twice_in_a_directory_without_write_permission_counts_once: pins the name de-duplication in the read-only case.
  • The read-only exception (EACCES/EROFS from every removal, and an unchanged count):
    • test_a_temporary_link_that_a_writable_directory_cannot_remove_is_refused: EPERM
    • test_a_read_only_directory_does_not_excuse_a_link_kept_by_another_error
    • test_a_link_added_elsewhere_while_a_read_only_directory_is_cleaned_is_refused
  • ACL tests, macOS only, using real chmod +a:
    • an allow entry on the directory
    • deny entries accepted
    • an allow entry on the token file
    • an entry the file inherited before the directory was cleared
    • an ACL that cannot be read
    • an entry of unknown kind

The macOS ACL path is verified locally only. CI has no macOS job, so these tests are skipped on the Linux runners.

Sibling sweep

tools/sibling_sweep.py is not in this repository, so the sweep used rg:

  • rg -n -i "first value|first .?authorization|authorization.? is used|uses .?authorization|authorization.? (takes|taking) precedence|carries both|sends both|both are sent", excluding lockfiles and CHANGELOG.md. It found every document listed in section 2, plus unrelated "first value" uses in the telemetry collector tests, which were left as they are.
  • rg -n -i "x-api-key" over Markdown, Python, TypeScript, YAML, JSON and Rust. It found the OpenAPI description and the example README. The CLI help text in cli.py and the server's refusal message name both headers without claiming precedence, so they are unchanged.
  • rg -n "S_IMODE|0o077|0o022|0o700|st_nlink" --type py packages integrations tools found the mode-bit privacy checks:
    • the token directory, fixed here
    • the token file, now also checked for an ACL (section 4)
    • remove_stale_files, which does not count links
    • the build-time staging directory in packages/sie_audio_prep/build_wheel.py. That build tool runs on Linux CI and is not the token directory, so it is unchanged.
  • Gateway credential readers: the audit middleware, the proxy token id and the OpenAI-compatible inner requests all read credentials through extract_request_credential. The authorization_values_disagree predicate has one caller, the warning.

This changes authentication behaviour (which requests warn) and the token-file checks. An independent adversarial review will follow on this PR.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Authentication
    • The server uses Authorization over x-api-key when both contain credentials. It skips empty repeated Authorization values and rejects requests with different credentials.
    • The gateway uses the first Authorization value if it contains a token; otherwise, it falls back to x-api-key. An unreadable first value is refused, and Bearer alone is treated as the token Bearer.
    • Starting with version 0.13.0, the gateway returns 401 for conflicting, unreadable, or later-only repeated Authorization tokens, and for differing repeated x-api-key tokens. Earlier versions warn about repeated Authorization cases on authenticated requests that pass.
  • Security
    • The server refuses token directories and files with macOS access-control entries that may grant access; deny-only entries are accepted.
    • Token-file cleanup now checks that temporary links are safe to remove and refuses cleanup when unsafe links remain.

A request whose first Authorization value is empty or blank, whose later value carries a token, and that also sends x-api-key authenticated with x-api-key without the repeated-Authorization warning, and so fell outside the refusal planned for 0.13.0. Count that shape as a repeat the gateway ignores, so it logs the warning once. Which header authenticates is unchanged.

The middleware tests now send an x-api-key that differs from every Authorization value and check the masked token id, so a passing request shows which header decided.
A temporary link renamed during the directory scan, or added before and removed after the listing, could balance the link count and let a token with another hard link be accepted. After removing the temporary links the token must now have one link; the balanced count decides only when a read-only directory keeps every temporary link in place. Each temporary name is removed only if it still holds the token.

On macOS a token directory with mode 0700 and an access control list passed the mode check, although the list can let other accounts change the directory. Such a directory is now refused with a chmod -N hint.
The first Authorization value decides when it carries a token; otherwise x-api-key decides, and later Authorization values are ignored. The documents said a repeated Authorization header uses its first value, or that Authorization is used whenever both headers are sent.

📝 Walkthrough

The gateway now selects credentials based on the first Authorization value and handles additional repeated-header cases. The server adds macOS ACL checks for token directories and files, and changes temporary hard-link cleanup to verify link identity and counts.

Changes: Gateway credential selection

Layer / File(s) Summary
Credential selection and policy

The first Authorization value takes precedence when it carries a token. An empty or blank first value allows x-api-key to determine the credential. Middleware detects repeated values when a later value supplies a token after an empty first value. Tests cover fallback credentials, audit-token selection, and warning behavior. Documentation describes these rules and the 0.13.0 refusal cases.

Independent adversarial review, run 1 (agent-generated)

This change touches token authentication in the server and the gateway, so it follows the authentication and authorization review gate.

Review record

Reviewer prompt, verbatim

The agent was started with this prompt:

Your complete brief is the file /private/tmp/claude-501/-Users-krisztiangajdar-Documents-projects-sie--claude-worktrees-sie-coding-capability-demo-146ebd/8340c74b-6a69-47aa-9745-d26f702c0537/scratchpad/review-818/prompt.md. Read it first and follow it exactly; it is your whole task. Return your report in the format it specifies.

The brief file, verbatim:

You are an independent adversarial security reviewer for a pull request in the public repository superlinked/sie, titled "fix: address the follow-up findings from the #811 auth review". You start with no context from the session that wrote it. Review the change as an attacker would and report what you find. Make no write action of any kind: do not use gh, do not push, do not comment, do not post to any service, do not edit files outside a scratch copy. You have no premise from the author beyond the title and the earlier review below, and no scope limit. You may report on anything in the diff and on any code it changes the behaviour of.

Inputs:
- The whole PR diff, origin/main...head: /private/tmp/claude-501/-Users-krisztiangajdar-Documents-projects-sie--claude-worktrees-sie-coding-capability-demo-146ebd/8340c74b-6a69-47aa-9745-d26f702c0537/scratchpad/review-818/pr818.diff

- The earlier independent review of the parent pull request (#811), whose five non-blocking findings this PR says it addresses, verbatim: /private/tmp/claude-501/-Users-krisztiangajdar-Documents-projects-sie--claude-worktrees-sie-coding-capability-demo-146ebd/8340c74b-6a69-47aa-9745-d26f702c0537/scratchpad/review-818/review-811-report.md . Judge each of its findings against this head (resolved, partly resolved, not resolved), and look for anything new the fixes introduce.
- A detached, read-only checkout of the head: /private/tmp/claude-501/-Users-krisztiangajdar-Documents-projects-sie--claude-worktrees-sie-coding-capability-demo-146ebd/8340c74b-6a69-47aa-9745-d26f702c0537/scratchpad/review-818/tree . Read any file there. You may run its tests locally (for example `cd <tree> && mise trust && mise run test -- packages/sie_server/tests/core/test_server_auth.py`, and `mise run gateway-test` for the gateway; a gateway build is large, so set `CARGO_PROFILE_DEV_DEBUG=0`, use a target directory inside the scratch directory, check free disk with `df -h /` first and stop if under 15 GB, and delete that target directory when you finish). You may write throwaway scripts under /private/tmp/claude-501/-Users-krisztiangajdar-Documents-projects-sie--claude-worktrees-sie-coding-capability-demo-146ebd/8340c74b-6a69-47aa-9745-d26f702c0537/scratchpad/review-818/scratch only. No network calls beyond what the test suite itself does locally, and no calls to any hosted SIE endpoint.

What the change touches: the single server's checks on its persisted auth token (`packages/sie_server/src/sie_server/core/server_auth.py`: the token directory's privacy check, now including access control lists on macOS, and the hard-link check and cleanup of temporary links); the Rust gateway's handling of a repeated `Authorization` header and `x-api-key` (`packages/sie_gateway/src/middleware/auth.rs`); the OpenAPI description of the API key; and the documents that describe which credential is used.

Probe at least:
1. The token link check and cleanup: can a foreign hard link to the token still be accepted, by any sequence of concurrent link, unlink and rename during the scan, the cleanup and the recount; can the cleanup unlink something that is not a temporary link to the token; does the read-only-directory exception (unlinks failing with EACCES or EROFS) open a path where an attacker who can make unlink fail keeps a foreign link and gets the token accepted; does a legitimate concurrent first start still succeed.
2. The macOS access-control-list check: is it reliable (a directory with an ACL that grants another account access must be refused; one without must pass), can it be bypassed (inherited entries, deny-only entries, ACL added after the check, a symbolic link for the directory), does it fail closed when the ACL cannot be read, and is the `ctypes` use memory-safe (the ACL handle freed, correct signatures, no crash on an unexpected platform).
3. The repeated-Authorization handling: for every shape of repeated `Authorization` with and without `x-api-key` (empty, blank, unreadable, non-Bearer or `Bearer ` with no token as the first value; differing case of header names; comma-joined values), which credential authenticates, whether the warning fires exactly when the documents say, and whether the documents, the OpenAPI description and the code now agree.
4. Fail-open paths and logging: refusals on each path, whether any refusal still emits the warning or reveals which value was used, and log injection or flooding.
5. Test quality: do the new tests drive the real code paths or stub the logic under test; are there untested branches that matter.

Checklist from docs/security-review-workflow.md (Authentication and authorization): probe missing, malformed, expired, revoked, replayed and foreign credentials; cross-tenant access; privilege escalation; and fail-open paths as applicable. Security fixes also require a sibling sweep: say whether the change leaves any sibling of the same shape unfixed that you can find.

Reviewed head and range

  • Head: ac304b8
  • Range: b80a029...ac304b8 (91702c0, 5118e62, d47d609, merge f5dec4e, ac304b8). 12 files, +319/-62.
  • Code read beyond the diff:
    • core/data_dir.py (owned_files, remove_stale_files) and every caller of load_or_create_token, read_stored_token and server_tokens.
    • In the gateway, the callers of request_token_id (audit, proxy) and the OpenAI-compatible inner-request header copy.
    • .github/workflows, to see which platforms CI runs on.

Abuse cases considered

  1. Token link check.
    • A foreign link kept while the token is accepted: a temporary link renamed during the scan, added before and removed after the listing, or listed twice.
    • The cleanup unlinking an entry that was replaced after the scan.
    • The read-only exception (EACCES/EROFS) used to keep a foreign link.
    • A foreign-link holder outside the directory (on macOS) raising or lowering the link count from their own directory.
    • Immutable files (uchg).
    • Concurrent legitimate first starts.
  2. macOS ACL check.
    • Allow entries, inherited entries, deny-only entries, and the default home-folder entry.
    • A symbolic link as the directory, a missing path, and an ACL added after the check.
    • An ACL on the token file itself.
    • Fail-closed on an unreadable ACL.
    • ctypes signatures, freeing of the handle, and behaviour on other platforms.
  3. Repeated Authorization. 26 header shapes, on a regular route and an admin route:
    • first value empty, blank, tab, Bearer , Bearer, Basic, or unreadable
    • later values unreadable, equal, or different
    • comma-joined values
    • mixed-case header names
    • one, several, equal or conflicting x-api-key values
    • The same shapes against sie-server's request_credentials, and a comparison with every document and with the OpenAPI text.
  4. Refusals and logging. Whether any refusal spends the warning, whether a log or response reveals which value was compared, log injection, and flooding.
  5. Test quality. Mutation of each new guard, and which branches CI actually executes.

Test evidence

  • Server suite. packages/sie_server/tests/core/test_server_auth.py at head: 158 passed. This ran on macOS 15.7.7 with Python 3.12.12 and the head's packages/sie_server/src first on the path, so the darwin-only ACL test ran.

  • Mutation of server_auth.py (scratch copy, TestPersistedToken):

    Mutation Result
Accept after cleanup without the recount 3 tests fail
Cleanup without the samestat recheck 1 fails
    No ACL check 1 fails
Count every listing occurrence 3 fail
Drop the read-only exception 1 fails
    Drop remaining == after survives
any() in place of all() survives
Treat any unlink errno as read-only survives
Treat an unreadable ACL as "no ACL" survives
  • Concurrent first starts.

    • Setup: 150 rounds of 8 spawned processes calling load_or_create_token on one fresh directory. In half the rounds the creator's link-to-unlink window was widened by up to 4 ms.
    • Result: 0 failures, exactly one creator per round, one token, nlink 1, and no leftover files.
    • The link-scan path ran 340 times and accepted every time.
  • ACL probes (real chmod +a):

    Probe Result
No-ACL directory (acl_get_file returns NULL with ENOENT) accepted
    Allow entry refused
Entry inherited by a newly created data directory refused
    Deny-only entry refused
Home directory (macOS default group:everyone deny delete) refused, and told to chmod -N ~
Symlink to an ACL directory refused
Symlink to a clean directory accepted
Missing path reported as "no ACL"
Token file with everyone allow read (directory 0700 or 0755) accepted
  • ACL memory.

    • 400k calls of _has_access_control_list on an ACL directory: RSS settles at about 26.8 MB.
    • Control without acl_free: RSS grows about 450 MB per 100k calls.
    • So the handle is freed.
  • Link probes:

    Probe Result
Read-only directory, stale temporary link accepted, link kept
Same plus a foreign link refused
Writable directory, stale link plus foreign link refused
Writable directory, stale link only accepted, link removed
Immutable (uchg) token with a stale temporary link refused at head (the base accepted it)
  • Gateway suite. cargo +1.98.1 test --offline --locked -p sie-gateway --lib middleware::auth, run in a scratch copy of the head with two probe tests appended: 54 passed (52 head tests plus the 2 probes). Tokens were tok-AAAA and tok-BBBB, unknown tok-CCCC, and admin admin-ZZZZ.

    • Warns and passes:
      • two different tokens → 200 as AAAA
      • a token, then an unreadable value → 200 as AAAA
      • empty or blank or tab first, a later token, and x-api-key → 200 as the key
      • a later unknown token, or an unreadable later value, with x-api-key → 200 as the key
      • mixed-case header names → 200 as the key
      • admin key after a blank first value, with a user token later → /v1/pools 200
      • a later token equal to the key → 200
      • admin first, user later → 200
    • Refused, no warning:
      • empty first and a later token, without x-api-key → 401
      • unreadable first → 401, with or without a key
      • Bearer or Bearer first with a key → 401
      • Basic first → 401
      • comma-joined values → 401
      • two conflicting keys → 401
      • admin token later with a user key → 403
      • an unknown key → 401
    • Silent passes:
      • empty then blank, with a key
      • the same token twice, or in another form
      • a token then an empty value
    • Six requests on one router (refusals first): one warning in total.
    • No captured log line contained a token.
  • Over the wire. axum::serve with raw HTTP/1.1:

    • AUTHORIZATION: / Authorization: Bearer tok-AAAA / X-Api-Key: tok-BBBB → 200.
    • An obs-text first value with a key → 401.
    • A token followed by an obs-text value → 200.
    • One warning over the run.
  • sie-server comparison, same shapes.

    • Empty first, then a token, with a key: authenticates as the later Authorization token (AAAA).
    • Blank first, then an unknown token, with a key: 401.
    • Empty first, then an unreadable value, with a key: 401.
    • Bearer first with a key: 401 (it presents the token Bearer).
    • Each of these matches the documented divergence until 0.13.0.
  • Scratch target and probe directories deleted afterwards. The checkout was left unchanged.

Earlier review (#811) findings

  1. Resolved.
    • authorization_values_disagree (packages/sie_gateway/src/middleware/auth.rs:352-360) is now true when every value that carries a token agrees but the first value carries none. So the blank-first, later-token, x-api-key shape warns: 200 as the key, one warning, on regular and admin routes.
    • Which header authenticates is unchanged.
    • Refusals of that shape do not warn.
    • The new test middleware_lets_x_api_key_decide_after_an_empty_authorization_and_warns covers it.
  2. Resolved.
    • All six cited documents, plus sie_server/README.md, the server_auth.py docstrings, the coding-agent example and the OpenAPI apiKeyAuth description, now say that the first Authorization value decides when it carries a token and that later values are ignored.
    • A repository-wide grep finds no remaining "when both are sent" or "uses its first value" claim.
    • See new finding 3 for two edge cases the new wording gets wrong.
  3. Resolved.
    • After removing the temporary links, the code recounts and accepts only st_nlink == 1 (server_auth.py:322-323). Probes A (rename) and B (add then remove) are refused.
    • The cleanup unlinks only names that still samestat the token (server_auth.py:330-339), which closes probe E.
    • New tests cover each case, and mutation shows they detect removal of either guard.
    • Residuals:
      • In a read-only directory the balanced count still decides, by design.
      • A small window remains between lstat and unlink.
      • Both can be used only by an actor with write access to the private token directory (the owner or root), who can read the token anyway.
      • A holder of a foreign link outside the directory cannot balance the count: it would need zero links at open time.
  4. Resolved for the directory.
    • On macOS, a directory with an extended ACL is refused (server_auth.py:234). This covers allow and inherited entries and symlinked directories, and the README documents it.
    • The token file itself is not covered (new finding 1). The check also over-reaches on deny-only entries (new finding 2).
  5. Resolved.
    • The new test uses an x-api-key that differs from every Authorization value and asserts request_token_id.
    • Its status codes (an unknown later token gets 200; admin and user roles get 200 or 403) pin which header authenticated.

New findings

  1. Non-blocking (sibling of finding 4, not a regression). packages/sie_server/src/sie_server/core/server_auth.py:276. The token file's privacy check reads only mode bits, so a macOS ACL on auth-token that grants read is accepted.

    • Sequence:
      1. A data directory has the inheritable entry everyone allow read,file_inherit.
      2. The base code creates the token. It inherits group:everyone inherited allow read.
      3. The head refuses the directory and says chmod -N <dir>.
      4. After that command, the head accepts the token. The file still carries the read entry, because chmod -N on the directory does not touch the files inside it.
      5. With the directory at 0755, which check_private_directory allows because it checks only the write bits, every local account can read the token.
    • Direct case: chmod +a "everyone allow read" auth-token is also accepted.
    • Not verified from a second account.
    • Suggested fix:
      • Apply the ACL check to the opened token file: acl_get_fd_np(fd, ACL_TYPE_EXTENDED), or acl_get_file on the path. Refuse with chmod -N <path>.
      • Make the directory message name both paths, or use chmod -RN.
    • The repository's "fix the class" rule argues for doing this in this PR.
  2. Non-blocking (usability, remediation text). server_auth.py:234-252 refuses any ACL, including deny-only entries, which cannot grant access.

    • Input: SIE_DATA_DIR=~, or ~/Documents, ~/Library or ~/Desktop. Each carries macOS's default group:everyone deny delete.
    • Result: refused with "chmod -N /Users/". Following that advice strips the system's default protection from the home folder.
    • Suggested fix: refuse only allow entries, by walking entries with acl_get_entry and acl_get_tag_type == ACL_EXTENDED_ALLOW. Or, for deny-only ACLs, suggest a dedicated subdirectory rather than chmod -N.
  3. Non-blocking (documentation precision, fail-closed).

    • Where: COMPATIBILITY.md:251-255, SECURITY.md:67-69, deploy/helm/sie-cluster/README.md:1566-1568, packages/sie_gateway/README.md:96, packages/sie_gateway/docs/architecture-guide.md:519, and the doc comment at auth.rs:304-309.
    • The claim: "otherwise x-api-key decides".
    • Where it does not hold:
      • An unreadable first Authorization value with a valid x-api-key gets 401.
      • Authorization: Bearer (scheme, no token) with a valid key gets 401. Both the gateway and the server read it as the token Bearer.
    • The OpenAPI text is accurate.
    • Suggested fix: "when the first Authorization value is empty or blank, x-api-key decides. An unreadable first value, or Bearer without a token, is refused."
  4. Non-blocking (test quality).

    • CI never runs the ACL code. .github/workflows has no macOS job and the test is darwin-only. Neither the ctypes binding nor the "no ACL passes" path runs in CI.
    • Surviving mutations:
      • Treating any unlink errno as read-only. With EPERM from an immutable file, the directory stays writable, so a balanced count is not trustworthy. The head correctly refuses (probe B5), but no test pins it.
      • Treating an unreadable ACL as "no ACL" (fail-open).
      • Dropping remaining == after.
    • Suggested fix:
      • Add a test where unlink raises EPERM with a stale temporary link (expect refusal).
      • Add a test where acl_get_file fails with an unexpected errno (expect TokenFileError).
      • Run test_server_auth.py on a macOS runner, or at least note that the ACL path is verified only locally.

Probe areas that held

  • Link check under concurrency: no findings.
    • No foreign link is accepted through rename, add-then-remove, duplicate listing or a replaced name.
    • A replaced name is never unlinked.
    • The read-only exception requires every unlink to fail with EACCES/EROFS and an unchanged count.
    • Concurrent first starts all succeed.
  • ACL check reliability:
    • Allow and inherited entries are refused, a clean directory passes, symlinks resolve consistently with stat, and the handle is freed.
    • The signatures are correct: c_void_p return, (c_char_p, c_int) arguments, ACL_TYPE_EXTENDED = 0x100.
    • Other platforms are skipped through sys.platform.
    • An ACL added after the check needs the owner.
    • Residual: the check is path-based and maps ENOENT to "no ACL", so a directory swapped between stat and acl_get_file is not caught. This is the same path-based class as the existing checks. An fd-based acl_get_fd_np would close it, and could be folded into the fix for finding 1.
  • Repeated Authorization:
    • The warning fires exactly for the three documented shapes, and only after authentication passes.
    • The code, the OpenAPI text and the documents agree, apart from finding 3.
    • authorization_values_disagree is a pub function of the library target and its meaning widened. The only caller in this repository is the warning.
  • Fail-open and logging: no findings.
    • Every refusal returns before warn_on_repeated_authorization.
    • Response bodies are static.
    • The message carries no request data.
    • It is logged once per AuthLayer.
  • Sibling sweep:
    • serving_artifacts.py mode checks guard immutability, not secrecy.
    • sie_audio_prep/build_wheel.py is a build tool.
    • The token file (finding 1) is the one unfixed sibling of the same shape.

Blocking findings: 0

…ly allow entries

The macOS access control list check now runs on the open directory and on the open token file, through acl_get_fd_np, so a token file that carries an allow entry (inherited from its directory, or added to it) is refused even after the directory is cleared. Only entries that are not deny entries are refused: deny entries, such as the one macOS puts on the home folder, take access away. An entry whose kind cannot be read, and a list that cannot be read, are still refused. The refusal names the path to fix, and for the directory it suggests removing the allow entries or using a directory of its own instead of clearing every entry.

New tests pin the read-only exception of the link check: a temporary link that a writable directory cannot remove (EPERM), a read-only directory where one link fails with another error, and a link added elsewhere while a read-only directory is cleaned up.
… are refused

x-api-key decides only when the first Authorization value is empty or blank. An unreadable first value, or Bearer without a token, is refused even with a valid x-api-key.

Author response to the independent review of ac304b83

This responds to the review. The new head is b6b3ae01. All four findings are fixed.

Commits since ac304b83:

  • 266a13be merges origin/main. It brings no auth changes.
  • f90a1883 contains the server code, the tests and the server README.
  • f8d917fb contains the documents and the auth.rs doc comment.
  • 997f0d27 makes the bare-Bearer wording exact after a CodeRabbit comment, and adds gateway assertions.
  • b6b3ae01 changes documents only, after a second CodeRabbit comment. SECURITY.md, the Helm README, the gateway README, architecture-guide.md and the 0.13.0 table now say that only a request that passes authentication logs the repeated-Authorization warning, once per process. COMPATIBILITY.md already said so.

Finding 1: the token file's own ACL was not checked

Fixed in f90a1883.

One helper for both checks. _acl_allows_access(fd, target) reads the ACL with acl_get_fd_np(fd, ACL_TYPE_EXTENDED). It runs on two open file descriptors:

  • The directory. check_private_directory now opens the directory with O_RDONLY | O_DIRECTORY and runs fstat on that descriptor. The owner and mode checks and the ACL check now all read the same open directory. That closes the path swap between stat and acl_get_file that the review noted.
    • A path that is not a directory still gets "must be a directory".
    • New behaviour: a directory its owner cannot read, for example mode 0300, is now refused with "Cannot read". Before, the check passed it, although the link scan needs to list the directory anyway.
  • The token file. read_stored_token runs the same check on the token file it already holds open, after the mode check.

Messages now name the path to fix.

  • File: <path> has an access control list entry that allows access, so others may have read the token. Delete <path> to have sie-server generate a new one, or remove the entries with chmod -N <path>.
  • Directory: list the entries with ls -led <dir>, then remove each allow entry with chmod -a# <number> <dir>, or set SIE_DATA_DIR to a directory of its own.
    • I did not use chmod -N <dir> or chmod -RN <dir>. Both also remove deny entries.
    • On a home folder, -RN would recurse through the whole tree.
    • Files the directory gave an inherited entry are refused by the file check, with their own path.

Tests (real chmod +a):

  • test_a_token_file_with_an_access_control_list_entry_that_allows_access_is_refused: everyone allow read on auth-token is refused.
  • test_a_token_file_that_inherited_an_entry_is_refused_after_the_directory_is_cleared: the review's exact sequence. The directory gets everyone allow read,file_inherit, the token file inherits it, then chmod -N <dir> runs. The token is still refused, and the message names the file.

Finding 2: deny-only ACLs were refused, and the advice stripped the home folder's protection

Fixed in f90a1883.

The rule. The helper walks the entries with acl_get_entry (ACL_FIRST_ENTRY, then ACL_NEXT_ENTRY) and acl_get_tag_type.

  • It refuses when an entry is not ACL_EXTENDED_DENY. That covers allow entries and any unknown kind.
  • An entry whose kind cannot be read counts as allowing access.
  • If acl_get_fd_np fails with any errno other than ENOENT, ENOTSUP or EOPNOTSUPP, the result is TokenFileError, so an unreadable ACL still fails closed.
  • The rule was applied to real paths:
    • ~, ~/Documents, ~/Library and ~/Desktop, each carrying group:everyone deny delete, now pass check_private_directory.
    • A directory with a deny entry and an allow entry is refused.

Signatures, checked against the macOS SDK's sys/acl.h:

Item Signature or value
acl_get_fd_np (c_int, c_int) -> c_void_p
acl_get_entry (c_void_p, c_int, POINTER(c_void_p)) -> c_int
acl_get_tag_type (c_void_p, POINTER(c_int)) -> c_int
acl_free (c_void_p) -> c_int
ACL_TYPE_EXTENDED 0x100
ACL_EXTENDED_DENY 2

acl_get_entry returns -1 with EINVAL at the end of the list, which I confirmed on real files. The bound library is created once, with functools.cache.

Freeing. After a successful acl_get_fd_np, the handle is freed in a finally. That covers an early return on an allow entry, the end of the loop, and any exception. A local probe made 440k calls on an allow directory and a deny-only directory:

  • With this code: maximum RSS 23.4 MB after warm-up, 23.9 MB at the end.
  • A control copy without acl_free: 199.8 MB, then 1964.9 MB.

Tests:

  • test_deny_entries_like_the_home_folder_default_are_accepted: a deny entry on the directory and on the token file is accepted.
  • test_a_directory_with_an_access_control_list_entry_that_allows_access_is_refused: deny plus allow entries are refused, on an existing directory and on an empty one. Nothing is created in the empty one.
  • test_an_access_control_list_that_cannot_be_read_is_refused: acl_get_fd_np fails with EIO. The result is TokenFileError, and no token is created.
  • test_an_access_control_list_entry_of_unknown_kind_counts_as_allowing_access: acl_get_tag_type fails on a deny-only directory, and the directory is refused.

Finding 3: "otherwise x-api-key decides" was wrong for two first values

Fixed in f8d917fb, and made exact in 997f0d27. The server README sentence and the server_auth.py docstring were fixed in f90a1883.

New wording. "The first Authorization value decides when it carries a token, and x-api-key is then ignored. When that value is empty or blank, x-api-key decides. An unreadable first value is refused, and Bearer alone counts as the token Bearer."

Why "counts as the token" and not "is refused". f8d917fb said "Bearer without a token is refused". CodeRabbit pointed out that this is not exact: the gateway, like sie-server, reads a bare Bearer as the raw token Bearer. A test, test_extract_bearer_token_bearer_only, already pins that behaviour. So the request is refused unless an operator configured the literal token Bearer. Either way, x-api-key never decides.

I kept the parser unchanged, because refusing a configured token is an authentication change outside this non-breaking PR. The documents now say exactly what the parser does. The reply to CodeRabbit is in the thread on COMPATIBILITY.md.

Where it applies:

  • COMPATIBILITY.md, SECURITY.md, deploy/helm/sie-cluster/README.md, packages/sie_gateway/README.md and architecture-guide.md.
  • The auth.rs doc comment of extract_request_credential. It also says that Bearer alone is read as the raw token Bearer.
  • The server README and module docstring now say the gateway uses x-api-key "when that value is empty or blank".

OpenAPI. The apiKeyAuth text is unchanged, because the review found it accurate.

Tests (997f0d27). request_credential_uses_the_first_authorization_value now asserts:

  • An unreadable first value with x-api-key: tok gives Unreadable.
  • Authorization: Bearer with x-api-key: tok gives Token("Bearer").

Each mutation below, applied alone, makes that test fail:

  • An unreadable first value falls back to x-api-key: it fails together with request_credential_lets_authorization_decide.
  • A bare Bearer counts as carrying no token: it fails together with test_extract_bearer_token_bearer_only.

Evidence. rg -n "otherwise .x-api-key. decides|Otherwise .x-api-key. decides|carries no token" now finds no claim about which header decides. Its three matches are unrelated: a docs-route comment in auth.rs, an example script and a tokenizer test.

Finding 4: test gaps

Fixed in f90a1883.

New tests that run on Linux CI. They use real hard links; only unlink is made to fail.

  • test_a_temporary_link_that_a_writable_directory_cannot_remove_is_refused: unlink fails with EPERM, as for an immutable file. The token is refused and the link is kept.
  • test_a_read_only_directory_does_not_excuse_a_link_kept_by_another_error: a 0500 directory with two temporary links. One link fails with EPERM and the other with the real EACCES. The token is refused.
  • test_a_link_added_elsewhere_while_a_read_only_directory_is_cleaned_is_refused: pins remaining == after.

macOS. The ACL tests listed under findings 1 and 2 are macOS-only. CI has no macOS job, so the macOS path is verified locally only. The PR body says so, and no macOS job was added.

Mutation run. Each guard was reverted alone in server_auth.py, and test_server_auth.py was run on macOS. 166 tests pass at the head.

Guard reverted Failing tests
Token-file ACL check 2 (both token-file tests)
Allow-only rule (refuse every entry) 1 (deny entries accepted)
Unreadable ACL treated as no ACL 1
Unknown entry kind treated as deny 1
Directory ACL check 3
remaining == after 1 (link added elsewhere)
any() instead of all() 1 (read-only directory with EPERM)
Any unlink errno counts as read-only 2 (both EPERM tests)
Recount after cleanup 6
samestat re-check 1
Read-only exception 1
Counting each name once 3

The four mutations that survived the review now fail: dropping remaining == after, any() in place of all(), any errno counting as read-only, and an unreadable ACL treated as no ACL.

Validation

Command Result
mise run lint passed
mise run typecheck passed
mise run test -- packages/sie_server/tests/core/test_server_auth.py 166 passed (macOS)
mise run gateway-fmt -- --check, gateway-check, gateway-clippy passed
mise run gateway-test 1832 lib tests passed, and 1843 with cloud-storage; the JetStream integration tests passed (at f8d917fb)
At 997f0d27, which only adds test assertions and changes documents: gateway-fmt -- --check, gateway-clippy, and cargo test --lib middleware::auth passed; the auth tests: 52 passed

test_a_concurrent_start_that_removes_its_temporary_link_mid_read_is_accepted patches os.fstat. It now acts only on the token file's fstat, because the directory check calls fstat first.

The gateway reads Authorization: Bearer with no token as the raw token Bearer, as it always has, so x-api-key does not decide for it and the request is refused unless Bearer itself is a configured token. The documents said such a value is refused, which is not exact. A test now pins that neither an unreadable first value nor a bare Bearer lets x-api-key decide.

The gateway logs the warning, once per process, only for a request that passes authentication; a refused request gets 401 without it. SECURITY.md, the Helm README, the gateway README, the architecture guide and the 0.13.0 table now say so, as the COMPATIBILITY.md item already did.

- `run1-report.md`: the first independent review of this PR, at an earlier head (ac304b83), verbatim. Its new findings 1 to 4 are what the later commits say they fix.
- `author-response.md`: the author's response to that review, verbatim, as posted on the PR.
- `review-811-report.md`: the independent review of the parent pull request (#811), whose findings this PR first set out to fix, verbatim.
- `tree/`: a detached, read-only checkout of the head. Read any file there. You may run its tests locally (for example `cd tree && mise trust && mise run test -- packages/sie_server/tests/core/test_server_auth.py`, and `mise run gateway-test` for the gateway; a gateway build is large, so set `CARGO_PROFILE_DEV_DEBUG=0`, use a target directory inside `scratch/`, check free disk with `df -h /` first and stop if under 15 GB, and delete that target directory when you finish). The macOS-only tests run on this machine (macOS); CI has no macOS job.
- `scratch/`: the only place you may write throwaway scripts and files. No network calls beyond what the test suite itself does locally, and no calls to any hosted SIE endpoint.

What the change touches: the single server's checks on its persisted auth token (`packages/sie_server/src/sie_server/core/server_auth.py`: the token directory's and token file's privacy checks, including macOS access control lists read through `ctypes`, and the hard-link check and cleanup of temporary links); the Rust gateway's handling of a repeated `Authorization` header and `x-api-key` (`packages/sie_gateway/src/middleware/auth.rs`); the OpenAPI description of the API key; and the documents that describe which credential is used.

Probe at least:
1. Run 1's findings 1 to 4: judge each resolved, partly resolved or not resolved at this head, with evidence of your own (not the author's).
2. The macOS ACL code: is reading every entry correct and memory-safe (signatures against the SDK headers, the entry iteration protocol and its return values, the handle freed on every path including errors, no use after free); does the allow-only rule refuse every ACL that can grant another account any access (consider every entry tag type, inherited entries, entries for the owner, and qualifiers), while accepting deny-only ACLs; does it fail closed on every error; is the descriptor-based check free of the path-swap gap; do the new refusals (for example an unreadable directory) break a legitimate setup; are the remediation messages safe to follow.
3. The token link check and cleanup after these commits: can a foreign hard link still be accepted by any sequence of concurrent link, unlink and rename; can an attacker who can make unlink fail with a chosen errno get a balanced count accepted; can the cleanup unlink something that is not a temporary link to the token; do legitimate concurrent first starts and read-only data directories still work.
4. The repeated-Authorization handling and the documents: for every shape of repeated `Authorization` with and without `x-api-key` (empty, blank, unreadable, `Bearer` with and without a trailing space, non-Bearer first values; differing case of header names; comma-joined values), which credential authenticates, whether the warning fires exactly when the documents say, and whether the code, the OpenAPI text and every document now agree, including the author's statement that `Bearer` alone counts as the token `Bearer`.
5. Fail-open paths, logging and test quality, as in run 1: refusals that still warn or reveal which value was used, log injection or flooding, and whether the new tests drive the real code; mutate the new guards yourself.

Report format (it is posted on the PR unedited, labelled agent-generated):

Agent-generated adversarial review

Reviewed head and range

  • Head: b6b3ae0
  • Range: fabf094...b6b3ae0. 12 files, +525/-78. A local git diff of the range matches the supplied diff.
  • Since run 1 (ac304b8), the range adds 266a13b (merge), f90a188, f8d917f, 997f0d2 and b6b3ae0.
  • Code read beyond the diff:
    • core/data_dir.py
    • cli.py:207-226 and app/app_factory.py:100-101, the two places that load the token
    • ipc_server.py, sie_server_sidecar/src/local_ingest.rs
    • In the gateway: middleware/audit.rs and every caller of the auth helpers (one AuthLayer::new, at server.rs:665)
    • .github/workflows (20 workflows, none on macOS)

Abuse cases considered

  1. macOS ACL code
    • The ctypes signatures against the SDK's sys/acl.h.
    • How acl_get_entry iterates and what it returns.
    • Freeing the handle on the early-return, end-of-list and error paths, and any use after free.
    • Which entries the rule refuses:
      • allow entries at any position, including after up to five deny entries and out of canonical order
      • inherited and inherit-only allow entries
      • allow entries that name only the owner
      • deny entries with inheritance flags
      • an ACL that was added and then removed
    • Fail-closed behaviour on an unreadable ACL and on an unreadable entry kind.
    • Swapping the directory after the check, on the descriptor-based path.
    • A FIFO, a regular file and directories with mode 0300, 0100 and 0500.
    • The macOS home-folder deny entry.
    • Whether the remediation messages are safe to follow.
  2. Token link check and cleanup
    • Renaming a temporary link during the scan, renaming it and linking it again, and adding a link before the scan and removing it after, each with a foreign link present.
    • Every temporary-link unlink failing with a chosen EACCES.
    • Real deny entries that make unlink fail in a writable directory.
    • A name replaced between lstat and unlink.
    • Concurrent first starts.
    • Read-only directories.
  3. Repeated Authorization (29 shapes through the real AuthLayer, 4 over raw HTTP/1.1)
    • First values: empty, blank, tab, unreadable, Bearer and Bearer (with and without Bearer configured as a token), Basic.
    • Comma-joined values.
    • Later values that differ, are unreadable, are empty, or are equal in another form.
    • x-api-key that is repeated, empty, unreadable or in conflict.
    • Admin routes.
    • Mixed-case header names on the wire.
    • Comparison with every document and with the OpenAPI text.
  4. Fail-open, logging and tests
    • Refusals that spend the warning or reveal a value.
    • Log injection and flooding.
    • Mutating each new guard, and which tests run in CI.

Test evidence

  • Server suite at head. packages/sie_server/tests/core/test_server_auth.py: 166 passed. This ran on macOS 15.7.7 with Python 3.12.12 and the head's packages/sie_server/src first on the path, so the darwin-only tests ran.

    • A second run with the same --basetemp gave 110 passed and 56 errors (new finding 1).
  • Mutation of server_auth.py (scratch copy, whole test file, macOS):

    Mutation Result
No token-file ACL check 2 fail
Refuse deny entries too 1 fails
Unreadable ACL treated as no ACL 1 fails
Unknown entry kind treated as deny 1 fails
No directory ACL check 3 fail
Read only the first ACL entry 1 fails
Drop remaining == after 1 fails
any() in place of all() 1 fails
Any unlink errno counts as read-only 2 fail
No recount after cleanup 6 fail
No samestat re-check before unlink 1 fails
A vanished link counts as EACCES 1 fails
A replaced name counts as EACCES 1 fails
Refuse only tag 1 (accept tag 0) survives (equivalent: macOS defines no other tag value for a real entry)
errno not reset before acl_get_fd_np survives (harmless)
    • The first six rows survive on Linux CI, because those tests are skipped there.
  • ACL iteration.

    • An independent ctypes walk matched ls -le entry for entry, and ended with -1 and EINVAL. The man page says the same.
    • Signatures match the SDK:
      • acl_get_fd_np(int, acl_type_t) -> acl_t
      • acl_get_entry(acl_t, int, acl_entry_t *) -> int
      • acl_get_tag_type(acl_entry_t, acl_tag_t *) -> int
      • acl_free(void *) -> int
      • ACL_TYPE_EXTENDED = 0x100, ACL_EXTENDED_DENY = 2, ACL_FIRST_ENTRY = 0, ACL_NEXT_ENTRY = -1
  • ACL probes (real chmod +a, through check_private_directory):

    Probe Result
Three deny entries, then an allow refused
Five deny entries with inheritance flags, then an allow at index 5 refused
Allow inserted before a deny refused
    user:<owner> allow list,search refused
    everyone allow read,file_inherit,only_inherit refused
Inherited user:nobody allow under an explicit deny refused
    everyone deny delete,file_inherit,directory_inherit accepted
ACL added and then removed (ENOENT) accepted
    Clean directory accepted
    ~, ~/Library, ~/Documents, ~/Desktop (each group:everyone deny delete) accepted
Token file with deny, deny, then allow readattr, directory 0500 refused
  • ACL memory. 300k calls each on an allow directory (early return) and a deny-only directory (end of list).

    • Head: maximum RSS 24.2, 24.7 and 24.7 MB at 20k, 150k and 300k calls.
    • Control copy without acl_free: 208, 1412 and 2800 MB.
  • Directory open.

    Probe Result
FIFO path refused (ENOTDIR), no hang
Regular file "must be a directory"
Directory 0300 or 0100 "Cannot read" (the base accepted them when nlink was 1)
    Directory 0500 accepted
  • Link probes.

    • Every temporary-link unlink forced to EACCES, with a foreign link present:
      • rename during the scan: refused
      • rename, then link the old name again: refused
      • add before the listing and remove after: refused
    • Real deny entries: everyone deny delete on the token, or everyone deny delete_child on a writable 0700 directory, make unlink fail with EACCES.
      • A stale temporary link is kept and the token accepted on the balanced count.
      • Run 1's rename probe in the same setup is refused.
  • Concurrent first starts.

    • Setup: 120 rounds of 8 spawned processes. In half the rounds, os.link was followed by a random delay of up to 4 ms.
    • Result: 0 failures, one creator per round, nlink 1, no leftover files.
    • 286 link scans, all accepted.
  • Gateway suite. cargo +1.98.1 test --offline --locked -p sie-gateway --lib, run in a scratch copy of the workspace:

    • middleware::auth: 52 passed
    • full lib: 1832 passed, 8 ignored
  • Gateway probe matrix. Valid tokens tok-AAAA and tok-BBBB, admin admin-ZZZZ.

    • Warns once:
      • empty or tab first, a later token, and a key: 200 as BBBB
      • two different tokens: 200 as AAAA
      • a token, then an unreadable value: 200 as AAAA
      • empty first, then an unreadable value, and a key: 200 as BBBB
      • empty first, then Bearer, and a key: 200 as BBBB
      • empty first, then a token equal to the key: 200
      • admin route, empty first, then a user token, with the admin key: 200
      • admin route, admin token first, then a user token: 200
    • Refused, no warning:
      • blank first and a later token, without a key: 401
      • unreadable first with a key: 401
      • Bearer or Bearer first with a key: 401, read as the token Bearer
      • Basic first with a key: 401
      • comma-joined values: 401
      • unknown first value, then a valid token: 401
      • two keys that differ: 401
      • an unreadable key: 401
      • admin route, empty first, then the admin token, with a user key: 403
    • Silent passes:
      • a token, then an empty value
      • the same token twice, in another form
      • empty first, then blank, with a key
      • an empty repeated key
      • a token with an unreadable key
    • Bearer configured as a token: Authorization: Bearer with x-api-key: tok-BBBB gives 200 as Bearer, so x-api-key is ignored, as documented.
    • One router: three refusals, then two passing repeats: one warning in total.
    • No captured log line contained a token.
  • Over the wire (axum::serve, raw HTTP/1.1):

    • AUTHORIZATION: / Authorization: Bearer tok-AAAA / X-Api-Key: tok-BBBB: 200
    • Authorization: Bearer with a key: 401
    • obs-text first value with a key: 401
    • comma list: 401
  • Gateway mutations. Each was applied alone and fails the auth tests:

    Mutation Result
A token only in a later value does not warn 2 fail
Every repeated token warns 1 fails
Unreadable first value falls back to x-api-key 2 fail
A bare Bearer carries no token 2 fail
Warn before the refusals 2 fail
  • sie-server comparison.

    • Bearer or Bearer with a valid key: 401 (the token Bearer).
    • Blank first with a key: 200.
    • Two different tokens: 401.
    • These match the server README.
  • The scratch target, workspace copy and probe directories were deleted. The checkout was left unchanged at the head.

Run 1's findings

  1. Resolved.
    • read_stored_token checks the ACL of the token file it already holds open, after the mode check (server_auth.py:320-324).
    • Refused: everyone allow read, an inherited entry that remains after chmod -N <dir>, and an allow entry placed after two deny entries.
    • Removing the check fails both token-file tests.
    • A newly created token is not checked when it is created, but serve reads it again through server_tokens (app_factory.py:101). That second read covers the file. It also refuses the directory, as described under "Probe areas that held".
  2. Resolved.
    • Deny-only ACLs, including the home-folder default on ~, ~/Library, ~/Documents and ~/Desktop on this machine, are accepted.
    • Allow, inherited and inherit-only entries are refused.
    • The directory message no longer suggests chmod -N.
    • The replacement text has its own problem (new finding 2).
  3. Resolved.
    • Probes 04 to 07 and the wire probes match the new text in all six documents, the auth.rs doc comment, the server README and the module docstring.
    • Unreadable first value: refused. Bearer alone: the token Bearer, and x-api-key never decides.
    • The OpenAPI apiKeyAuth text in openapi.rs and openapi.json is accurate.
    • A grep finds no remaining "when both are sent", "uses its first value" or "otherwise x-api-key decides".
  4. Partly resolved.
    • The link-check tests that run on Linux kill the three surviving link mutants: remaining == after, any() and any errno.
    • The unreadable-ACL test kills the fail-open mutant, but only on macOS.
    • Every ACL test is darwin-only and no workflow runs on macOS, so in CI the six ACL mutants above survive. The author states this.
    • The new macOS tests also leave directories that cannot be deleted (new finding 1).

New findings

  1. Non-blocking (test hygiene). packages/sie_server/tests/core/test_server_auth.py:562, :575 and :622 add everyone deny delete to tmp_path directories and never remove it.
    • Sequence: run the file twice with the same --basetemp.
      • First run: 166 passed.
      • Second run: 110 passed, 56 errors. Setup cannot clear the base temp: Permission denied.
    • With the default base temp: pytest cannot prune old runs. This machine has 15 garbage-* directories under the per-user pytest root, each holding group:everyone deny delete, and every run logs a PytestWarning for them.
    • Suggested fix: a finalizer that runs /bin/chmod -RN <tmp_path> after each ACL test.
  2. Non-blocking (remediation text).
    • Where: server_auth.py:247-251 (directory message), server_auth.py:321-324 (file message), packages/sie_server/README.md:1110.
    • a. Directory message. "remove each allow entry with chmod -a# " is unsafe to follow as written, because each removal renumbers the entries after it.
      • Sequence (run locally):
        1. The parent carries everyone deny delete,directory_inherit.
        2. The data directory has two allow entries. ls -led lists 0: user:daemon allow search, 1: user:nobody allow list, 2: group:everyone inherited deny delete,directory_inherit.
        3. Running chmod -a# 0 and then chmod -a# 1 removes one allow entry and the inherited deny entry. It leaves 0: user:nobody allow list.
      • The server keeps refusing, so this fails closed, but the user loses the deny entry that the message was rewritten to protect.
      • Fix: tell the user to remove the entries from the highest number down, or by text: chmod -a "<entry as listed>" <dir>.
    • b. File message. It says "others may have read the token", then offers chmod -N <path> as an equal alternative to deletion. That branch keeps a token that may already have been copied.
      • Fix: lead with deleting the file to rotate the token, and say that chmod -N keeps the current token.
    • c. README. It says ls -le lists the entries, but a directory's own entries need ls -led. The code's message already uses ls -led.
    • d. Quoting. The paths are interpolated into the commands without quoting, as in the existing chmod 700/chmod 600 hints.
      • Example: SIE_DATA_DIR="~/Library/Application Support/sie" produces commands that split at the space.
      • Fix: shlex.quote.
  3. Non-blocking (sibling of the same shape, outside the diff).
    • Where: packages/sie_server/src/sie_server/ipc_server.py:291-300 (and packages/sie_server_sidecar/src/local_ingest.rs:404-425).
    • What: both protect the queued-mode Unix socket only with mode 0600.
    • Run on macOS:
      1. A socket is bound in a directory that carries everyone allow read,write,file_inherit, then set to 0600.
      2. The socket shows srw------- plus 0: group:everyone inherited allow read, write.
      3. connect needs only write permission, so any local account can connect. Not verified from a second account.
    • Scope:
      • Only when SIE_IPC_SOCKET_PATH is set on macOS and its directory carries an inheritable allow entry.
      • The default /tmp/sie-ipc.sock is in /private/tmp, which has no ACL by default.
    • Suggested fix: create the socket in a private directory, checked with the same _acl_allows_access rule on macOS. Alternatively, document the requirement.

Probe areas that held

  • macOS ACL code: no findings.
    • Signatures match the SDK.
    • The iteration protocol is right, and every entry is read.
    • The handle is freed on every path, and entry is never used after acl_free.
    • Fail-closed behaviour:
      • Any errno from acl_get_fd_np other than ENOENT, ENOTSUP or EOPNOTSUPP raises TokenFileError.
      • An entry whose kind cannot be read counts as allowing access.
      • When acl_get_entry returns -1, the loop ends. macOS returns EINVAL both at the end of the list and for an invalid handle, and the handle was just returned by acl_get_fd_np, so no fail-open path is reachable.
    • macOS has only allow and deny tags, so refusing every entry that is not a deny entry covers every entry that can grant another account access.
    • Allow entries that name only the owner are also refused. This over-refuses, but it fails closed. It may affect managed home folders that give the user an inheritable allow entry; not verified on such a machine.
    • Descriptors:
      • The directory's owner, mode and ACL are now read from one open directory, and the token file's checks use its open descriptor.
      • The directory descriptor is closed before the later path-based scan, create and link.
      • Swap probe:
        1. The data directory is renamed right after its check.
        2. A directory with everyone allow read,file_inherit takes its place.
        3. The new token gets group:everyone inherited allow read and is returned with created=True.
      • The re-read in serve (read_stored_token through server_tokens) refuses that directory, so the server does not start with the token. Swapping the directory back leaves no token to read.
      • The precondition is write access to the data directory's parent.
      • So this is not a finding. Using dir_fd= for the later operations would remove the window.
    • New refusals: only directories that their owner cannot list (0300, 0100) are newly refused. A FIFO does not hang.
  • Link check: no findings.
    • No foreign link was accepted through rename, rename and relink, add and remove, a chosen EACCES, or a replaced name.
    • The cleanup unlinks only names that still match the token by lstat. The window between lstat and unlink needs write access to the private directory.
    • Concurrent first starts and 0500 directories work.
    • One imprecision: the docstring says only a read-only directory lets the balanced count decide. EACCES from accepted deny entries also does that in a writable directory. No race exploits it, because every kept name must still exist and match the token.
  • Repeated Authorization and documents: no findings.
    • The warning fires exactly for the three documented shapes, only after authentication passes, and once per AuthLayer. There is one AuthLayer.
    • The code, the OpenAPI text and every document agree, including the author's statement that Bearer alone counts as the token Bearer.
  • Fail-open and logging: no findings in the diff.
    • Every refusal returns before the warning, response bodies are static, and the message carries no request data.
    • Unchanged by this PR: the audit middleware records the masked last four characters of the deciding credential even for refused requests. For example, Basic dG9rLUFBQUE= is recorded as **************QUE=.
  • Sibling sweep:
    • The token directory and file are now covered.
    • The IPC sockets are new finding 3.
    • The telemetry worker id is not secret.
    • sie_audio_prep/build_wheel.py is a build tool.
    • serving_artifacts.py uses modes for immutability.
    • The gateway persists no secret files.

The non-blocking findings 1 to 3 from run 2 above are fixed in #821, which gets its own independent adversarial review before it merges.

* fix(server): make the token remediation hints safe to follow

The macOS access control list hints from #818 could mislead:

- Removing allow entries one by one with `chmod -a# <number>` renumbers
the entries after each removal, so following the hint as written can
remove an inherited deny entry. The directory hint now says to remove
each allow entry by its text with `chmod -a "<entry>"`, without its
  number or the word inherited.
- The token file hint offered `chmod -N` as an equal alternative to
deleting a token that others may have read. It now leads with deleting
the file to get a new token and says that `chmod -N` keeps the current
  one.
- Paths in every suggested command, including the existing `chmod 700`
and `chmod 600` hints, are quoted with `shlex.quote`, so a path with a
  space does not split.
- The README pointed at `ls -le`, which lists the entries of a
  directory's contents; `ls -led` lists a directory's own.

The macOS tests added `everyone deny delete` entries to their temporary
directories and never removed them, so a second run with the same
`--basetemp` failed in setup and pytest could not prune old base temps.
A fixture now adds the entries and removes every entry under the test's
temporary directory afterwards.

* fix(server): refuse a macOS IPC socket directory whose ACL allows access

The IPC socket is protected only by its mode, 0600. On macOS a socket
inherits the inheritable entries of its directory's access control list,
and connect needs only write permission, so with SIE_IPC_SOCKET_PATH in
a directory that carries an inheritable allow entry, other local
accounts could connect to the socket that the mode is meant to keep
private. The server starts this socket on every `sie-server serve`.

On macOS the server now refuses to create the socket in a directory
whose access control list has an entry that allows access, using the
same rule as the token directory: any entry other than a deny entry is
refused, and a list that cannot be read is refused. The default
directory, /tmp, carries no access control list.

The ACL reader is split so that it raises OSError and the token checks
keep their TokenFileError message.

The sidecar's local-ingest socket has the same shape on macOS. Its
README now states the requirement for SIE_SIDECAR_LOCAL_SOCKET; the
sidecar ships as a Linux image, where the 0600 mode also limits inherited
POSIX ACL entries through the ACL mask.

* fix(server): check the IPC socket directory before removing a stale socket

start() removed an existing socket at the path before the new access
control list check ran. When the check then refused to start, another
server still running on that path lost its socket name. The check now
runs first, so a refused start leaves the directory untouched.
