Worker pods had no way to run a step before the worker starts or to mount extra volumes without patching the rendered StatefulSet. Both lists are rendered on every worker lane except remote lanes, and extra volume names cannot reuse a chart worker volume name.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added options to configure extra init containers and volumes for worker pods on regular lanes; these are not rendered on remote lanes.
    • Added validation to prevent extra volumes from using names reserved by the chart.
  • Documentation
    • Documented the worker pod options and volume naming restrictions.

📝 Walkthrough

The Helm chart now supports additional init containers and volumes for worker pods. These additions render on non-remote lanes, while remote lanes omit them. Rendering fails if an extra volume uses a chart-owned worker volume name.

Changes: Worker Pod Customization

Layer / File(s) Summary
Worker customization values and rendering
deploy/helm/sie-cluster/values.yaml, deploy/helm/sie-cluster/templates/worker-statefulset.yaml, deploy/helm/sie-cluster/README.md
Adds values for extra init containers and volumes. The template renders them on non-remote lanes and rejects extra volumes that use chart-owned names. The README documents the settings and constraints.
Worker customization render tests
tools/ci/tests/test_helm_render.py
Tests the defaults, rendering on worker lanes, omission on remote lanes, and render failures for chart-owned volume names.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to edb9a

The lane-aware mount guidance no longer directs users to remote-only volumes. No actionable merge risk remains from this change.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to edb9a

The customization is opt-in, preserves existing pod identity defaults, excludes remote lanes, and protects chart-owned volume names. No introduced security defect was established. Configured containers can nevertheless access shared worker storage or request additional privileges, so safe use depends on deployment permissions, cluster policy, and initialization behavior.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A principal controlling these common values can affect every non-remote worker pod receiving the configuration. Depending on cluster admission and selected volume sources, requested access could extend to namespace secrets, shared PVC contents, or node resources through privileged containers or hostPath mounts. Such access is configuration-dependent, not enabled by the empty defaults.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The relevant conditional attack path is control of deployment values followed by insertion of a malicious init container or sensitive volume reference. The inspected change does not establish a path from ordinary service requests to those values. Existing values already permitted worker-image selection, while this PR broadens the expressible pod configuration; that distinction does not by itself establish a security defect.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — Remote-lane exclusion prevents these common lists from being inserted into remote pods, and reserved-name rejection prevents replacement of chart-owned volumes. Neither control is a general sandbox for supplied Kubernetes objects: explicit secret references, token projections, or privilege requests still require deployment authorization and cluster admission controls.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Initialization can modify worker-visible cache data before startup. Reserved names preserve storage identity, but do not make writes atomic or idempotent. Operators supplying mutating initialization must account for interruption, repetition, concurrent access to shared volumes, and recovery without relying on Helm rollback to restore data.

Thanks, this is a clean addition. Defaults render nothing, remote lanes are skipped, and the reserved-name guard plus the render tests cover the edge cases well. CI is green. Approving.

One optional follow-up: extraVolumes are only reachable from the init containers today. If you also need the worker container itself to mount them, an extraVolumeMounts list would be a good next PR.
