Refs #343. This is the Agents section of phase 4.

Page tools for browser agents (WebMCP)

  • When agent.browserTools is on, the overlay registers the read agent tools on the page:
    • through WebMCP (document.modelContext.registerTool, or navigator.modelContext on earlier drafts);
    • and by answering the devtoolstooldiscovery event, under the group Pangular Inspector.
  • Each call goes back to the server, which runs the same handler, config checks and redaction an MCP call gets. Action and destructive tools never reach the page. The tools are unregistered on leave and stop.
  • Off by default. Any script on the development page could call these tools, and they read the server's view of the app. Turn them on with agent: { browserTools: true }. The default is open for discussion in agents: decide whether page tools (agent.browserTools) are on by default #396.
  • The Forms tab leaves these tools out of its WebMCP list.

Agent skills in the package

  • Four user-facing skills ship in packages/devtools/skills:
    • pangular-inspector: the inspect, fix, verify loop and a question-to-tool table;
    • pangular-forms;
    • pangular-errors;
    • pangular-performance.
  • pangular skills install copies them into .claude/skills by default.
    • --agent agents|github picks another agent folder; --dir and --global pick another location.
    • --skill installs only the named skills.
    • It never overwrites a changed skill without --force, and --dry-run writes nothing.
    • pangular skills lists them.
  • skills:check now validates them too.

More agent actions

Tool Tier What it does
inspect-transfer-state read Reads the TransferState entries of a page
list-ssr-overrides read Lists the SSR overrides
set-ssr-override action Adds or changes a render error, forced client render or state edit
remove-ssr-override action Removes one
screenshot-component read Returns one component as an image
list-console read Now takes since
  • Override tools: they use the same checks and save path as the panel, so the panel list updates live. agent.readOnly and actions.http: false drop them.
  • Screenshots:
    • How they're made: the page copies the component's subtree into an inert document with its computed styles and draws it on a detached canvas. The app's DOM is never written, and it also works for elements scrolled out of view.
    • Masking: password and secret-named fields are masked, along with data-private and .sentry-mask/.rr-mask elements and JWTs and bearer tokens in text.
    • Limits, documented: images from other origins without CORS, iframes and some web fonts don't draw.
    • Loading: the code loads on the first request.
  • Console: the Errors collector now pauses its pushes while nobody watches and keeps capturing into its buffer.
  • Image results over MCP: devframe's MCP adapter always sends one text block. The existing @devframes/agentic patch now also passes a tool's image block through. Like the existing patch, this only applies inside this repo. Apps that install the package get the markdown answer until devframe supports image content.

Docs

  • New agents/browser-agents.md and agents/skills.md.
  • getting-started/cli.md and getting-started/configuration.md.
  • agents/tools.md (Eighty tools) and agents/mcp-server.md (seventeen tools act on the app).
  • inspectors/components.md, inspectors/errors.md, inspectors/ssr-http.md and security.md.

Checks

Check Result
pnpm format:check Passes
pnpm typecheck Passes
pnpm test:devtools 2796 passed, 3 skipped
pnpm test:panel 671 passed, 1 skipped
pnpm docs:build Passes
pnpm skills:check Passes
pnpm commit:check Passes
pnpm extension:build Done, in its own commit

Browser checks:

  • Page tools: with a WebMCP-shaped document.modelContext, 60 read tools registered and returned real data. pagehide unregistered them and pageshow registered them again.
  • Screenshot: it matched a real element screenshot closely, with the masks applied.
  • Override tools: on the demo app, a state-edit and a render-error took effect, and removing them restored a 200.

Not covered

  • Native WebMCP in a shipping Chrome wasn't available to test against; this follows the W3C draft and chrome-devtools-mcp 1.10.1.
  • .agents/skills and .github/skills follow current conventions as far as known.
  • The panel's Settings view doesn't show agent.browserTools yet.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added opt-in browser-agent access to read-only inspection tools and component screenshots, with sensitive content masked in images.
    • Added four bundled agent skills, with CLI options to list, install, preview, and replace them.
    • Added tools to inspect TransferState data and manage SSR overrides, plus time-based filtering for console logs.
  • Documentation
    • Expanded guidance on browser agents, agent skills, tools, configuration, and data privacy.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved delivery of captured errors and console activity when a page becomes active, including activity captured while it was idle.

Browser agents can find the read-only tools on the page through WebMCP when agent.browserTools is on (off by default). The package ships agent skills with a pangular skills install command, and agents gain TransferState and SSR override tools, a component screenshot tool and a since filter on list-console.

📝 Walkthrough

This pull request adds browser-agent read tools, component screenshot capture, SSR override and TransferState tools, and bundled agent skills with a CLI installer. It also changes error delivery while pages are unwatched and adds a time filter to console queries.

Changes: Browser-agent tools and component screenshots

Layer / File(s) Summary
Browser-tool listing and invocation
packages/devtools/src/rpc/browser-tools.ts, packages/devtools/src/config.ts, packages/devtools/src/rpc/__tests__/browser-tools.test.ts, apps/docs/src/content/agents/browser-agents.md, apps/docs/src/content/agents/tools.md
The RPC layer exposes eligible read-tier tools to browser agents, scopes calls to owned pages, and redacts and limits answers. Configuration and documentation describe the opt-in setting and tool availability.
Page registration and lifecycle
packages/devtools/src/browser-tools.ts, packages/devtools/src/forms-webmcp.ts, packages/devtools/src/overlay.ts, packages/devtools/src/devframe.ts, packages/devtools/src/__tests__/browser-tools.test.ts
The overlay registers tools through WebMCP or Chrome DevTools discovery and manages registration during page lifecycle changes.
Component screenshot capture and MCP image output
packages/devtools/src/component-screenshot.ts, packages/devtools/src/rpc/component-screenshots.ts, packages/devtools/src/devframe.ts, packages/devtools/src/overlay.ts, packages/devtools/src/__tests__/component-screenshot*.test.ts, patches/@devframes__agentic@1.2.3.patch, apps/docs/src/content/security.md
The page creates masked component images, and the RPC tool returns validated screenshot results as MCP image content.

SSR overrides and TransferState tools

Layer / File(s) Summary
Override operations and TransferState inspection
packages/devtools/src/rpc/ssr-override-tools.ts, packages/devtools/src/devframe.ts, packages/devtools/src/config.ts, packages/devtools/src/__tests__/ssr-override-tools.test.ts
The tools validate and save SSR overrides and provide filtered TransferState reports. Override writes use the actions.http setting.
SSR tool documentation and output labels
apps/docs/src/content/agents/tools.md, apps/docs/src/content/agents/mcp-server.md, apps/docs/src/content/inspectors/ssr-http.md, packages/devtools/src/rpc/ssr-tools.ts, packages/devtools/src/__tests__/ssr-overrides.test.ts
The documentation lists the SSR override and TransferState tools. The SSR request explanation uses the “SSR overrides” heading.

Bundled skills and installer

Layer / File(s) Summary

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to ab7ed

Clarify which tools run on the page and which remain server-only. This documentation issue does not block merging.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to ab7ed

The optional browser integration treats some server-wide runtime diagnostics as source-only reads, allowing page scripts to receive information beyond their own page. Being disabled by default, read-only filtering and secret masking limit exposure, but do not enforce page isolation. Screenshot teardown and ownership-recovery behavior also remain incompletely established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The source-read exception admits Analog tools whose handlers consume shared runtime state without caller-page filtering. With browser tools and the relevant inspector enabled, a script on one connected page can receive server-function activity and last-request diagnostics beyond that page. Read-only classification and token masking do not enforce the stated page boundary. The aggregation predates the PR; publishing these handlers through the page-tool interface is new.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The aggregate-read concern is bounded to the shared development server and workspace where browser tools and Analog tools are enabled. A script executing on one connected page can use its legitimate connection; another page's ownership need not be forged. The inspected outputs expose runtime metadata, not demonstrated credentials, arbitrary filesystem access or production infrastructure authority.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A page script obtains an executable tool through discovery, calls an allowlisted Analog reader, and receives text derived from aggregate page or request state. Caller-page context is established, but these handlers do not use it. Secret masking does not remove ordinary call counts, rendering status or live-route presence.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The browser interface is disabled by default, admits only registered read tools, checks page ownership, replaces page arguments and redacts answers. Live ownership by another connection is rejected. Ownership also deliberately permits recovery after disconnection or expiry, so this policy is not an immutable page identity binding.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Prompt screenshot revocation on page teardown is not established. Leave sends forget operations, but pending requests survive until settlement or timeout, capture work is not cancelled, and result authorization calls owners.write, which can recreate ownership after release. Page matching and correlation prevent simple mismatched-page settlement, but do not establish lifecycle-generation isolation.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Separate source-only handlers from aggregate runtime readers in browser eligibility. Exclude aggregate variants or supply page-filtered state before rendering their answers.
  • proposed — Bind screenshot requests to an ownership generation, use a non-mutating result authorization check, and cancel pending requests and page work on teardown. Verify interruption and concurrent recovery without assuming that forgetting a page alone rejects late results.

…t fields

Page tools now always answer for the page that registered them, list only
page-scoped tools and source scans, and leave other tabs out of their
answers. Screenshots mask fields and custom controls by every name
attribute. Skills install refuses symbolic links, `since` rejects out of
range times, and the docs match the tool lists.
