What and why

The browser agent tools (WebMCP and devtoolstooldiscovery, from #398) could only be turned on in the config file. This adds a "Browser agents" switch to the panel's Settings page. The default stays off (#396).

How the config and the switch work together:

  • agent.browserTools (still false by default) sets where the switch starts each time the dev server starts.
  • The switch overrides it until the server restarts, for every connected page and panel, in either direction. It applies right away with no reload: the server sends browser-tools-changed and pages register or unregister their tools.
  • It is kept on the dev server, not in localStorage, because it affects pages and the extension and hub panels live on different addresses.
  • Only the panel can change it. It is not an agent tool. Any connection to the server can already call the read functions directly, so letting the panel turn the page tools on gives a page script nothing new.

Changes:

  • Package: a set-browser-tools action (accepts only {enabled: boolean}), a browser-tools shared state, and the page listening for the change. list-browser-tools and call-browser-tool now read the switch instead of the startup config. Registered in SHARED_RPC and SHARED_STATE_KEYS.
  • Panel: a new browser-tools-setting section: a native checkbox with role="switch", a label and hints, states for connecting, a static report, an older server and errors, and a polite live region. It follows changes made in other panels.
  • test:axe now also checks the Settings view.
  • Docs: the Settings, Browser agents, Configuration and Resources pages.

How it was verified

  • pnpm commit:check
  • pnpm format:check
  • pnpm typecheck (includes the ngc template checks)
  • pnpm test:devtools (3053 tests) and pnpm test:panel (736 tests), with new tests for the switch, the broadcast, refusal when off and the panel section
  • pnpm skills:check
  • Docs in apps/docs updated and pnpm docs:build passes
  • pnpm extension:build and extension/ui committed
  • Checked in the browser with axe: Settings in dark and light, at 1280px and 360px, both switch states, keyboard toggling with Space. 0 violations.

Notes for reviewers

  • apps/docs/public/images/panel/settings.png was not regenerated. It still shows only the Theme and Tabs sections.
  • A real app page registering tools with WebMCP after a flip is covered by the package tests, not checked by hand.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a Settings switch to enable or disable browser agent tools across connected pages. Changes take effect immediately and remain until the dev server restarts.
    • The switch starts with the value configured by agent.browserTools, and displays guidance or a retry option when settings are unavailable or a change fails.
    • Browser agent tools now update as the switch changes without requiring a page reload.
  • Documentation
    • Updated setup and settings guides with switch behavior, persistence, and safety considerations.

The page tools from agent.browserTools could only be turned on in the
config file, which needs a server restart. Keep a switch on the server
that starts from agent.browserTools, add set-browser-tools for the
panel and a browser-tools shared state, and broadcast
browser-tools-changed so every connected page registers or unregisters
its tools without a reload. The overlay now always asks the server,
which lists no tools while the switch is off.

Refs #396
Settings gets an accessible switch for the browser agent tools. It
reads the server's browser-tools state, follows changes made in other
panels, says that the change lasts until the server restarts and what
the config starts it at, and shows loading, unsupported and error
states with Retry. The axe run now also checks the Settings page.

Refs #396
Explain how the Settings switch and agent.browserTools interact: the
config sets where the switch starts, and the switch applies to every
connected page until the dev server restarts.

Refs #396
The committed panel bundle has to match app/, or CI fails on a stale
extension/ui. Rebuild it with the Settings switch.

📝 Walkthrough

The dev server now provides a shared browser-tools switch that connected pages can change without reloading. The Settings panel reads and updates the switch, and browser-tool registration follows its current state.

Changes: Browser tools switch

Layer / File(s) Summary
Server switch and RPC
packages/devtools/src/rpc/browser-tools.ts, packages/devtools/src/devframe.ts, packages/devtools/src/config.ts, packages/devtools/src/rpc/__tests__/browser-tools.test.ts, packages/devtools/src/__tests__/browser-tools.test.ts, apps/docs/src/content/agents/*, apps/docs/src/content/getting-started/configuration.md
The RPC switch validates updates and tracks configured and current state. The dev server stores updates in shared state, broadcasts changes, and uses the current value for tool listing and calls. Tests and documentation cover the switch.
Page tool registration lifecycle
packages/devtools/src/browser-tools.ts, packages/devtools/src/overlay.ts, packages/devtools/src/__tests__/browser-tools.test.ts
Browser-tool handles refresh registration after change events while active. Leave, resume, and stop operations control whether a handle registers tools.
Settings control and documentation
app/src/pages/browser-tools-setting.ts, app/src/pages/settings.ts, app/src/app.ts, app/src/__tests__/*settings*.test.ts, scripts/panel-axe.mjs, apps/docs/src/content/getting-started/settings.md, extension/ui/*
The Settings panel shows the switch and handles loading, unsupported states, failures, and retries. Tests and accessibility checks cover the control. Documentation describes its behavior, and the extension references the updated bundle asset.

Rewrite the sentence to name its subject.

"It is off by default" has no clear antecedent. The text before it is the page title. Name the subject, for example "Browser agent tools are off by default, because any script on the page could then call them."

Update the screenshot or its alt text.

The PR notes that the Settings screenshot was not regenerated. The image at Line 14 does not show the Browser agents section. Regenerate it, or the page keeps a stale image. The alt text lists only Theme and Tabs.

264-269: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

Clear stale pending when a new attempt starts, and keep the error state consistent.

set() clears error on entry but keeps pending until success. If the first attempt fails with enabled=true, and the user then toggles to false and that also fails, pending is overwritten. That is correct. But if the user's second toggle is refused by the early return (!canChange()), pending and error stay unchanged, which is acceptable.

The remaining gap is load(). It clears error but keeps pending. After Retry triggers load() while status is not ready, a later retry() can re-apply an outdated pending value. Reset pending in load().

Proposed fix
   private async load(client: DevframeRpcClient) {
     this.attached = client;
+    this.pending = null;
     this.status.set('loading');

A reload reads the server's current value, so Retry must not reapply a change that failed before it. The docs sentence now names the browser agent tools as its subject.
Keeps the committed bundle in step with the panel change so CI's stale bundle check passes.

🟡 Minor · Ignore completions from replaced RPC clients. · browser-tools-setting.ts:286-302

app/src/pages/browser-tools-setting.ts:286-302
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Ignore completions from replaced RPC clients.

set() captures the client, but its success and failure paths do not verify that the client is still attached. If the old request fails after reconnection, its catch block restores the old value to pending after load() has read the replacement client’s shared state. retry() then sends that stale value through the replacement client.

Guard both settlement paths with the client or a load generation. Reset saving when load() starts so an ignored old request cannot leave the replacement client blocked. This preserves the intentional same-client retry path.
