Precedence: latest wins. A seat's latest explicit effort choice sticks until it is cleared, through reboots, team restarts, restores and spec refreshes. Clearing returns to the spec's authored effort or the runtime default, and says which. Only a restore that deliberately picks older settings would bring them back, and no restore option in this version does that: rig restore <snapshotId> --rig <rigId> takes no other option (rig restore status is a separate read-only command). So every restore keeps the choice, and no new flag is added. Both writers that hold older values ask one seam, effortPrecedence in domain/seat-effort.ts, which is now LATEST_WINS_EFFORT_PRECEDENCE.

What changes

Per-seat reasoning effort (release 0.7.0, slice 07):

  • rig seat set-effort <seat> --effort <level> | --clear --reason … saves one seat's effort choice in a new column, nodes.effort_choice (migration 104). The spec's value stays in nodes.effort. The command is audited (node.effort_changed), reports changed: false for a no-op, and never restarts anything. Its result says whether the seat is running, and that nothing has been sent at launch or seen in the session yet. --clear names what the seat falls back to.

  • One shared resolver (resolveSeatEffort: the seat's choice, else the authored effort, else no flag) feeds every managed continuation:

    • the fresh launch (rig seat launch --fresh, including its events);
    • the handover successor;
    • the in-place Codex restart (rig seat restart --keep-conversation). An effort difference there is now the change being applied, not settings_drift; --plan and the result say so. Every other setting must still match.
  • The restore/refresh seam, latest wins.

    • Restore, with a saved choice: a snapshot restore launches the seat's saved choice, and adds a restore note when the snapshot held another value. The live seat is found by its logical id in the rig, so a seat removed and grown back with rig grow (a new node id) keeps its latest choice too.
    • Restore, without one (never set, or cleared): it launches the snapshot's authored effort as before, so an older snapshot never brings a cleared choice back.
    • No live seat with that logical id: the rule itself falls back to the snapshot's recorded choice, else its authored effort. Today's restore doesn't launch a seat that no longer exists, so this case is rule-level only and isn't a restore path.
    • Spec refresh: rewrites only the authored value and keeps the choice.
    • Neither writes or deletes the saved choice.
  • rig seat effort <seat> (read-only, GET /api/seat/effort/:seat) keeps four values apart:

    • requested: the last set-effort;
    • saved: the resolution;
    • launch: the effort flag on the running process's own command line;
    • native: the level the session sent with its latest turn since that process started (Claude's transcript, Codex's rollout), paired with how that turn ended:
      • Codex: accepted, rejected (with the service's message) or pending;
      • Claude: recorded. The applied level stays NOT VERIFIED, because the transcript doesn't show whether it is the level after any model fallback.

    Until the seat takes a turn, the native value is NOT VERIFIED.

Arteries touched

Launch and resume, and restore (docs/as-built/arteries.md). Downstream effects:

  • A seat with no saved choice resolves exactly as before (authored or none), so launch commands are unchanged for every existing seat.
  • With a choice saved, fresh, successor and in-place launches send it.
  • Restore now launches the live seat's saved choice when one exists (found by logical id), with a note when the snapshot held another value; without a saved choice it launches the snapshot's authored effort, as before.
  • Spec refresh is unchanged for nodes.effort.

Proof

Tests:

  • New: seat-effort.test.ts covers the resolver, the argv parsers, the native reader (accepted, rejected, pending and recorded; a turn from before this launch is never counted), the latest-wins seam (saved choice, cleared choice, gone node, refresh) with the undecided placeholder kept only for comparison, and the report.
  • Extended:
    • effort-lifecycle-e2e:
      • for both Claude and Codex, the snapshot has authored medium, high is saved on the live seat, and an ordinary restore launches high, says the snapshot held medium, and keeps the choice;
      • the same, for both runtimes, when the seat was removed and grown back under a new node id before high was saved;
      • a choice cleared after the snapshot stays cleared: the restore launches the snapshot's medium, silently;
      • a refresh keeps the choice;
    • seat-fresh-launch (the choice is sent and recorded);
    • seat-handover-service (the choice reaches the successor);
    • seat-restart-in-place (the saved effort is applied and reported; a clear sends no flag);
    • the CLI verb tests.
  • model-fidelity-enumeration-guard now asserts the successor reads the resolver.
  • Full suite: the 8 known environmental failures (stub-cli-journeys ×2, /usr/bin node ×3, umask ×2, terminal-pipe-utf8 ×1). Two load-sensitive tests failed once in the full run and pass alone: codex-resume-final-native and slow-op-recorder.

Native run, 2026-10-13 (a separate daemon instance with disposable seats). Versions: Claude Code 2.1.296 on claude-opus-5-5; Codex 0.153.4 on gpt-6-astra.

  • Set while running: effort was saved while each seat's turn ran; that turn finished at the old level, uninterrupted. The peer seat's report was unchanged.
  • Two continuations each, saved high:
    • Claude, via fork handover: launch high, native high, and it recalled the earlier conversation both times.
    • Codex, via managed fresh launch: launch high, native high, accepted.
  • Clear: back to the spec's medium at launch and natively.
  • Edge levels:
    • Claude max: sent and recorded (no cap was seen on this model).
    • Codex turbo: the service rejected it with a 400, and the report says REJECTED. This case showed that Codex records the level it sent even when it is rejected, which is why the report pairs the level with the turn's outcome.
  • Composition verdict: pass on both runtimes. The conversation was kept for Claude.
  • Not shown for Codex: keeping the conversation. Both routes were blocked by existing defects at the time: the in-place restart refused the sh <send-script> pane shape that OpenRig's Codex launch creates (fixed in fix(seat): restart in place accepts a Codex that OpenRig launched through its staged script #1212), and the fork handover failed when the new thread id wasn't captured at launch (fix(handover): a Codex fork whose new id isn't captured yet commits with the id pending #1216).
  • Applied verdict:
    • Codex: the service accepted the level for that turn.
    • Claude: NOT VERIFIED; the transcript doesn't show whether the recorded level is the one after any model fallback.
  • Not run natively: restore and spec refresh against a saved choice. At the time of this run they waited on the precedence rule, which this PR has since settled (latest wins, above); they remain covered by the hermetic tests only.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Round 1 (57804cf..6e946e4)

  • First start reads the saved choice. A seat's first start went through the instantiator's existing-member launch (a retried first start, the materialized-seat launch the kernel first start uses, launchMaterialized). It sent the authored effort it had just resolved, ignoring a choice saved before the seat ever started. It now reads the resolver after the config is written: the saved choice, else exactly the authored value. The choice never enters the authored column.

  • REJECTED means the level was rejected. It now applies only to the service's request rejection that names the level ("Invalid value: ''. Supported values are …"). Other errored turns read "the turn failed (usage limit / unauthorized / other) before this level could be judged". A turn_aborted turn reads interrupted, not pending forever.

  • In-place restart. An effort difference is applied only for an explicit saved choice. With none (never set, or cleared), it refuses as settings_drift, as before this PR. --plan, the refusal, the help and set-effort --clear's message say which case applies. --clear no longer claims the authored or default effort was applied; the next ordinary managed launch or resume resolves it.

  • rig seat effort joins the right conversation. The native value is attributed only when the transcript belongs to the observed process's own conversation:

    • Codex: the argv resume id, or the process's own PID-keyed logs;
    • Claude: the argv session, or a recorded resume rotation from it, must match the status sidecar's session.

    Otherwise native stays NOT VERIFIED.

  • Unknown level: set-effort with a level the runtime isn't known to accept saves it with a warning, never a refusal.

  • Tests cover each item:

    • no choice, a cleared choice and an explicit choice against a running process at a different effort;
    • conversation B in the pane against A recorded;
    • the usage-limit, unauthorized and other error shapes;
    • aborted turns.

    The B-against-A case fails without the join.

  • Full suite: run with HOME, CODEX_HOME, CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR, the XDG dirs, OPENRIG_HOME and the tmux socket dir all in a scratch directory, and no real codex or claude on PATH. Only the 8 known environmental failures. Build and lint pass.

  • Main merged in. Its one conflict was a test-world option, also added by fix(seat): restart in place accepts a Codex that OpenRig launched through its staged script #1212. The affected and native tests pass after the merge.

  • Not run: any native step for this round. That stays NOT RUN.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Set or clear a seat’s reasoning-effort choice with an audit reason, without restarting its running process.
    • View requested, saved, launch-emitted, and runtime-observed effort separately, including when runtime results can’t be verified.
    • Saved choices apply to fresh launches, managed continuations, and handovers.
    • In-place restarts apply a changed effort only when an explicit choice is saved; otherwise, effort differences prevent restart.
    • Restores use the latest applicable saved choice and report precedence warnings. Specification updates retain saved choices when applicable.

…r and reporting)

OPR.0.7.0.7, first half. A seat's explicit effort choice is stored in its own
column (nodes.effort_choice, migration 104), so nodes.effort stays the authored
or default resolution that spec refresh writes, and --clear can name what the
seat goes back to: the authored level, or no flag (the runtime's default).

Like set-model, the verb validates, writes and persists a node.effort_changed
event in the same transaction, reports changed: false when nothing changes, and
never restarts the seat or touches its peers, model or account. A database
without the column refuses instead of reporting a change. The reply keeps
requested, saved, emitted (not yet) and observed (not observed) apart, and says
whether the seat is running now (unknown when the tmux probe can't tell).

Launches don't read the choice yet: that wiring waits on the precedence answer
and is sequenced with #1163, so this branch must not merge on its own.

…ffort reports it four ways

OPR.0.7.0.7. One shared resolver (domain/seat-effort.ts: saved seat choice, else
authored effort, else no flag) feeds the fresh launch, the handover successor and
the in-place Codex restart. An in-place restart applies the saved effort as the
one setting it changes, and its plan names that change.

Restore and spec refresh ask one precedence seam, with no rule picked: a restore
keeps launching the snapshot's effort and warns when the saved choice differs; a
refresh rewrites only the authored value; neither deletes the saved choice.

rig seat effort <seat> shows requested, saved, the flag on the running process's
command line, and the effort the native session recorded for a turn since that
process started (Claude transcript, Codex rollout); otherwise NOT VERIFIED.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…y the level it sent

Measured on Codex 0.153.4: the rollout's turn_context records the level the client
sent even when the service rejects it (an unknown level ends the turn in a 400). The
native reading now pairs the level with the turn's outcome: accepted (Codex turn
completed without an error), rejected (with the service's message), pending, or, for
Claude, recorded, whose applied level stays NOT VERIFIED because the transcript
doesn't show whether it is the level after any model fallback.

📝 Walkthrough

Adds per-seat effort choices for Claude Code and Codex, with CLI and HTTP operations to set, clear, and report them. Managed launches use the resolved choice. Restore and spec refresh apply precedence rules, while in-place restart reports effort differences and applies explicit saved choices.

The seat effort feature looks mergeable. A few minor edge cases remain: a bogus emitted effort level in the report, a possibly stale audit "from" value with multiple writers, missing JSON errors on invalid CLI options, and a misleading restore message. These are worth fixing or accepting before or soon after merge.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Fix the Claude --effort parse when the flag has no value.

If argv ends with --effort, found becomes null. That null also replaces any earlier --effort value, and the function then reports { flag: "none" }. This edge case is narrow. The bigger risk is with --effort followed by another flag: the parser takes the next flag (for example --resume) as the effort value, so the report shows a bogus emitted level. Only accept a value that does not start with -.

Make the effort update atomic across database connections.

setEffort cannot interleave between readEffort and the transaction within one Node daemon because both operations are synchronous. However, createDb opens the configured file path, and OPENRIG_DB can point multiple daemon processes at the same database. In that case, from.choice can be stale and the audit event can record the wrong from.

Moving the read inside the transaction only addresses in-process scheduling. Use an atomic compare-and-write, or enforce one writer per database, before emitting the audit event.

Update setEffort to use an atomic compare-and-write through setNodeEffortChoice,
matching the previously read choice as well as the requested choice; emit the
audit event only when that conditional update succeeds, using the choice
actually replaced as its from value.

#1209 round 1, P2-1. launchExistingAgentMember (the retried first start, the materialized-seat
launch the kernel's first start uses, and launchMaterialized) launched with the authored effort it
had just resolved, so a choice saved with rig seat set-effort before the seat ever started was
silently ignored. The binding now reads the shared resolver after updateNodeResolvedConfig: the
saved choice if there is one, else exactly the authored value just written. The choice is never
merged into the authored column.

…failed and interrupted turns say so

#1209 round 1, P2-2 and LOW-1. Any errored Codex turn read REJECTED, so a seat at a usage limit
reported its effort rejected. Now rejected means the service's request rejection that names this
level ("Invalid value: '<level>'. Supported values are ..."). Any other error (codex_error_info
usage_limit_exceeded, unauthorized, other) reads "the turn failed (<kind>) before this level could
be judged". A turn_aborted for the turn reads interrupted, not pending forever.

…wn to accept

#1209 round 1, LOW-2. A mistyped level (set-effort hihg) was saved silently and broke the next
Codex continuation. It is still saved (never refused: versions and models move), but the result
and the CLI now warn, naming the known levels.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ved choice

#1209 round 1, O1. With no saved choice (never set, or cleared) the account-only restart had
dropped main's effort settings_drift refusal and relaunched with the authored or no effort flag in
place of the running level. It refuses again in that case, naming why, and applies an effort
difference only when the resolver's source is the seat's explicit choice. --plan's note, the
refusal guidance, the restart help and set-effort --clear's message tell the paths apart; --clear
no longer claims the authored or default effort was applied.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…wn conversation

#1209 round 1, F2. rig seat effort read the transcript named by the registry and reported its
turn next to the pane process's flag, so a pane running conversation B could show B's launch
flag beside A's turn. The transcript is now joined to the process first: a Codex process's argv
resume id, or for one that names none its own PID-keyed logs, must be the recorded conversation;
a Claude process's argv session (or a registry-recorded resume rotation from it) must be the
status sidecar's session. When the join can't be made, native effort stays NOT VERIFIED.

# Conflicts:

The only conflict was the migration registry: this branch's 104 (node effort choice) beside main's 105, 107

Return JSON for invalid set-effort --json options.

If an operator supplies neither --effort nor --clear, or supplies both, this branch prints only to stderr. An agent reading --json output receives no JSON error. Emit an error object on stdout when opts.json is set, and keep exit code 1. Commander leaves omitted options undefined. (github.com)

… sticks until cleared

The founder's decision for slice 07: a seat's latest explicit effort choice sticks until cleared, through
reboots, team restarts, restores and spec refreshes; clearing returns to the spec's authored effort or the
runtime default and says which; only a restore that deliberately picks older settings brings them back.

- The precedence seam (seat-effort.ts) now uses LATEST_WINS_EFFORT_PRECEDENCE. Fresh launches, successors and
  in-place restarts already resolve the saved choice first; the rule covers the two writers holding older
  values:
  - a snapshot restore launches the seat's saved choice when it has one, and says so when the snapshot held
    another value. A seat without a choice (never set, or cleared) launches the snapshot's authored effort as
    before, so an older snapshot never brings a cleared choice back. With the seat's node row gone, the latest
    choice known is the one the snapshot recorded.
  - a spec refresh rewrites the authored value and keeps the choice (unchanged).
- No restore option in this version picks older settings deliberately (rig restore takes a snapshot id and
  --json only), so every restore keeps the choice; no new flag is added.
- Clearing says which value the seat goes back to: the spec's authored effort, or no effort flag (the
  runtime's own default).
- The saved choice is still never deleted by restore, refresh, reboot or restart. The undecided placeholder
  stays exported only for comparison.

Snapshot with authored medium, then high saved on the live node, then an ordinary restore: it launches high
(Claude's resume effort argument), says the snapshot held medium, and keeps the choice. Both this and the Codex
case fail with the undecided rule in force.

Correct the clear-choice restore message.

If the live authored effort is medium and the snapshot’s authored effort is low, restoreLaunchEffort launches with low. This assertion instead requires setEffort to promise medium on restore. Update the service message and this assertion to distinguish restore from other managed launches.

…grown seat keeps it

A seat removed and grown back (rig grow) gets a new node id under the same logical id. Restoring an older
snapshot read the live choice by the snapshot's node id, found no row, and launched the snapshot's recorded
choice or authored effort, so the seat's latest choice lost. The restore now finds the live seat by its logical
id in the rig (falling back to the node id), and latest wins there too. Claude and Codex regressions.

…s a seat by logical id

Comment only. With no live seat the precedence rule answers with the snapshot's recorded choice, else its authored
effort, but restore doesn't launch a seat that no longer exists, so that case isn't a restore path. A seat grown
back under a new node id is found by its logical id and keeps its latest choice.

Approved at 1dac3ad. A seat's reasoning effort can now be chosen with rig seat set-effort and cleared with --clear, and rig seat effort reports it. The latest explicit choice applies to the seat's launches until it is cleared; clearing returns to the spec or default. A restore reads the live seat's choice by logical id, so a seat removed and grown back keeps its saved choice over an older snapshot, and says when it did. An in-place Codex restart still refuses an effort change unless it comes from the saved choice. Required CI passed at this head, which merges current main without changing the reviewed change.
