What a user gets

When an agent closes a human decision with an unverified successor, new custody findings go to the closing agent. If that closer is human, system machinery, missing or not admitted by this host's queue, the asking agent is used when its address is admitted; otherwise the original destination is retained. Refs #514 (the remaining custody-routing case).

Ownership comes from the actual closing transition, including archived history; later notes and Slack receipts do not transfer it. Human identity is independent of terminal bindings, and address admission does not require a live seat. If the human registry is missing or unreadable, only that candidate keeps its original destination and logs the error. The sweep continues to create unrelated findings and close repaired ones, including on an install with no human registry yet. External aliases are validated again at persistence: a dedicated custody-finding repository entry point permits only a human_registry_unavailable refusal for an existing, closed custody source with the same source and destination addresses. It re-reads that source inside the create transaction and retains ordinary validation, transaction, event, retry-warning and wake behavior; normal creation and other invalid destinations remain refused.

How you verified it

Tested revision: 47da65a3d23a8a9bf126eaf8d44e0c464bbdbb92, based on 3001cc436656c435e54425443e708e3e2d8c7d68.

  • 414 tests passed across 17 related daemon files, including all 44 custody regressions. They cover aliases, archived closures, later annotations, reopen/cancel cycles, unadmitted addresses, fallback ownership, registry failures/recovery, deduplication, and automatic closure after a linked successor repairs custody.
  • With an unavailable registry, an agent custody item plus unrelated unclaimed and overdue work produces 3 findings and 3 wakes; repeating the sweep adds no wake. The corresponding external-human case produces 3 persisted findings and 2 terminal wakes, retaining the human finding's gateway route. Both variants also allow a repaired finding to close during the outage. Admission guards reject ordinary creates, unknown or reopened sources, source/destination mismatches, non-custody closures, removed external identities and unknown rigs; human-gate validation and idempotent retry warnings remain intact.
  • On the original base, 17 of 19 selected routing regressions failed and 2 controls passed. Against the previous PR head 45ac2d9a, 7 of 8 selected registry cases failed because the whole sweep aborted; all now pass. Real external admission against a25ed03a reproduced 3 failures out of 30 cases at persistence; all 3 now pass.
  • npm run build and npm run lint passed locally.
  • The complete local npm run test:repo passed on this revision: 288 passed / 1 opt-in skipped, 367 first-run references checked with no failures, and 57 context packs validated. The first attempt stalled during npm metadata revalidation; the unchanged suite passed using the already populated cache with npm_config_offline=true.
  • Full fork Tests passed all 8 jobs, including the four complete package suites and installed scenarios. Daemon: 14,444 passed / 8 skipped / 5 todo; CLI: 4,070 passed / 1 skipped; TUI: 919 passed; UI: 1,729 passed / 1 skipped.
  • The first fork daemon attempt had one failure in the unchanged Slack pagination test's 250 ms timeout assertion. Its isolated 2-case recheck and the full daemon-only retry both passed at the same SHA; no test assertion or Slack implementation was changed.
  • Upstream Tests: build, typecheck, repo checks and installed scenario passed; the complete package suites are still running or queued. Portability passed.
  • CodeRabbit completed its review on this revision; both original finding threads are resolved with no new actionable comments.

The YAML scenario runner has queue preconditions/read assertions but no queue-update or sweep-tick action. These regressions exercise the production queue repository, migrated SQLite, archiver and sweep directly, with terminal transport simulated. Live Slack delivery and agent consumption were not exercised; @external delivery keeps the gateway path.

Anything you were unsure about

This changes recipients for newly created dangling-closure and successor-verification-required findings. Existing findings retain their routes and deduplication, including findings created on the original destination during a registry outage. Registry recovery enables owner refinement for subsequent new findings; it does not migrate existing ones. The other finding classes, reminder text and quiet-hours requests in #514 remain separate work.

  • One concern per PR; no version bump; no CHANGELOG.md edit
  • Tests added or updated where the change is testable
  • I listed the checks I ran, their results, and any checks I could not run

The queue repository now exposes destination-admission and human-destination checks. The stuck sweep uses closure history to route custody findings for human destinations to an admitted closing agent or source session. If registry classification fails, the sweep logs the error and retains the original destination.

The repository exposes destination-admission and human-destination checks. It also supports custody finding creation during a registry outage only when the source meets the required closure and session conditions.

For human destinations, the sweep uses closure history to select an admitted closing agent or source session. On registry lookup failure, it logs the error and retains the existing destination. Tests cover routing, admission, registry outages, repeated findings, and repaired findings. The architecture document describes these behaviors, and existing test fixtures provide a human-registry loader.

Thanks, @Aschenbath. The routing rule is right and small: a custody finding for a human decision goes to the agent that closed it, then to the asking agent if its address is admitted, then to the original destination. We measured it against main: ordinary agent destinations keep main's route, there's one wake-up across repeated sweeps, and the finding closes when a linked successor appears. Taking the owner from the closing transition (with archived history, and without later notes or receipts) holds too.

One required change: an unreadable human registry shouldn't stop the whole sweep. custodyFindingRoute calls isHumanDestination for every dangling-closure candidate, and when the registry can't be read that throws human_registry_unavailable into the sweep's outer catch, so the pass fails with no findings of any kind. Measured: with an unreadable registry, one agent custody item and some unrelated unclaimed and overdue work, main creates 3 findings and sends 3 wake-ups; this head creates and sends nothing. A broken registry also stops an already-repaired finding from closing. And the registry projection (gateway/humans.generated.yaml) doesn't exist until a human is registered, so an install without one hits this whenever a custody candidate exists.

Please keep main's route for that candidate (row.destinationSession) when the registry can't be read, log one line, and let the pass continue, including closing repaired findings. That's your own fallback in the code ("retain the established durable destination"), and it builds no route from an unknown identity.

Then update the two registry-unavailable tests and the last paragraph of the as-built doc to the new behaviour, and add a case with an unreadable registry plus unrelated work that still gets its findings.

Thanks, @Aschenbath. The custody routing stays as it is: a finding for a human-closed handoff goes to the agent that closed it, then the asking agent, then the original destination. 47da65a was a thoughtful attempt to keep findings alive through a registry outage, but we'd like to take it back out, for a reason we measured. Two changes, both in your next push:

  1. Drop the outage exception. Please remove createCustodyFinding, its admission exception inside the create transaction, and its as-built paragraph, and call the ordinary create again, as a25ed03 did for the dangling-closure path. The reason: a finding saved during the outage has no owner-notification classification, because it can't be classified while the registry is unreadable. After the registry was repaired, that finding was never selected or sent, through repeated sweeps and a restart of the outbound driver. We measured this with the real repository, sweep, registry, queue ports and outbound driver, though not with live Slack. Without the exception, the create is refused during the outage, as it is on main, and after the repair the next pass creates the finding normally and routes it to the closer. Control runs with a readable registry behaved the same on every version we tested.
  2. Make the PR description and the as-built doc exact about outages. Both should describe this behaviour: when the registry can't classify a custody candidate's owner, that candidate keeps its original destination, one log line names it, and work bound for agents keeps routing. But a finding whose destination is a <name>@external person still needs the registry to admit it, so during an outage that case fails the pass, as it does on main, and the finding is created after the repair. The current wording is broader than that: "the pass continues to route unrelated findings and close repaired ones" in the doc, and "the sweep continues to create unrelated findings" in the description. Also remove the description's paragraph on the custody-finding entry point, as part of item 1.

Optional, not needed for the merge: while the registry stays unreadable, the registry read and the log line repeat on every pass for each candidate in the window, up to about 288 lines a day per candidate at the default 300-second interval. Routing only when the finding is created, or logging one line per pass instead of one per candidate, would quiet it.

After your push, we'll review the change, and then there's a final maintainer check before merge.

Thanks again, @Aschenbath. A friendly check-in on our last comment: its two changes still stand. They were (1) drop the outage exception (createCustodyFinding and its admission exception) and call the ordinary create again, and (2) make the PR description and the as-built doc exact about registry outages. The repeated-log-line suggestion there is still optional.

In the same push, please bring the branch up to date with main (a merge or a rebase is fine). It now conflicts in one place, the import line from ./queue-repository.js at the top of packages/daemon/src/domain/queue-stuck-sweep.ts, where main added matchesRecordedHandoffTarget. Please keep that import, plus whatever your version still needs after change 1. Every other file merges cleanly.

Are you still working on it? If we haven't heard from you by Sunday, 18 October, we'll make those changes on our own branch, keeping your commits, with credit to you, and link it here.
