What a user gets

Refs #331. A claimed item whose owner reports an outstanding human prompt now reads needs-input, with the reason visible in queue reads, the pickup lens and the execution view. The sweep retires an existing false stall, can detect a later real stall after input clears, and retains explicit closure deadlines and human attention.

How you verified it

Tested e96b60c8, including upstream 63f7b4ca and its Codex prompt-confirmation change.

  • npm ci and the post-merge workspace build passed on WSL with Node 22. Final npm run lint (including the daemon build) and the UI build passed.
  • Final focused run: 91 tests passed across the input-wait, execution-view and pickup suites, including 20 new regressions for hook/self-report waits, long unanswered prompts, clear/resume, recurring stalls, archival, manual dispositions, occupant replacement and deadlines. A Codex integration case verifies confirmed input followed by a fresh pane clear. The broader post-merge run passed 243 tests across 12 suites before the one-line Q1 reason follow-up; these runs overlap.
  • Initial red run: eight failures in the new input-wait cases; after the derivation fix, the recurrence test independently exposed the closed-finding suppression bug.
  • Review regression: adding a real slice tag exposed the missing reason in Q1 execution lanes (one failure, 19 passes). The same row now carries equal input-wait evidence in queue, pickup, Q1 and Q5 reads.
  • Full local npm test: repository checks passed (293 passed, one opt-in skip); TUI passed (981 tests). Daemon had 16,346 passes/eight failures and CLI had 4,470 passes/12 failures. The missing claim column in the retirement fixture was corrected and its native tests pass in the final focused run. Reruns with the seven production files restored to aa95c233 reproduced the file-mode, tmux/input, restart-timeout and CLI path/connection failures; two intermittent timing failures did not reproduce. These results do not establish a clean full local suite.
  • Local UI suite: 199 files passed, 1,739 tests passed and one skipped.
  • Upstream CI on the final commit passed all eight jobs: build/package, typecheck, repository checks, the installed scenario and all four package suites. Daemon: 16,438 passed, 11 skipped, five todo; CLI: 4,485 passed, two skipped; TUI: 981 passed; UI: 1,739 passed, one skipped. The logs confirm all 20 input-wait cases, execution-view cases and the corrected retirement fixture passed. The portability report also passed.

The stub's current say/emit repertoire cannot produce a permission or elicitation prompt. Instead, the regression exercises production hook normalization, Claude self-report mapping, activity arbitration, SQLite queue projections, attention and the standing sweep with a controlled clock. No real provider calls are needed.

Anything you were unsure about

needs-input is only a derived pickup receipt; stored queue/activity state and the original work item's transition history do not change. The recovery helper recognizes the latest machine-authored input-wait retirement receipt, including in the archive, and uses it in deterministic finding IDs; manual dispositions retain ownership. The historical copy-mode and active-work telemetry incidents in #331 are outside this change.

If this is security-related

Not security-related.

  • One concern per PR; no version bump; no CHANGELOG.md edit

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Claimed work awaiting input now shows a “Needs input” status with the reason for the wait.
    • Waiting views pause the usual pickup-age stall check while preserving explicit closure deadlines; attention prompts remain visible.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Input waits no longer appear as stalls. After input is provided, later genuine stalls can still be detected, and manual recovery decisions remain in effect.

📝 Walkthrough

Owner-reported input needs now appear in eligible queue pickup receipts and affect waiting backstops. The stuck-finding sweep records input-wait closures and can detect later stalls. Tests cover pickup projections, deadlines, finding recurrence, and manual dispositions.

🟡 Minor · Pass needsInputReason in the Q1 lane pickup derivation too. · execution-view.ts:833-841

packages/daemon/src/domain/execution-view.ts:833-841
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Pass needsInputReason in the Q1 lane pickup derivation too.

This change adds needsInputReason to the Q5 call at Line 1170. The Q1 lanes call at Lines 833-841 still sends only needsInput. A claimed in-progress lane with a pending prompt therefore shows pickup.evidence = "owner needs input". The same row in q5_park shows "owner needs input: <reason>". One execution document then gives two different evidence strings for the same receipt. The PR states that the reason appears in the execution view.

Thanks, @Aschenbath, for #1313. It makes a claimed queue item whose owner reports an unanswered prompt read as needs-input, with the reason shown, instead of as a stalled claim. We've received it and will follow up here.

Thanks again, @Aschenbath. The needs-input state with its reason is useful. From reading the code and in our checks, it shows in queue reads, the pickup lens and the execution view, and every consumer we checked handles the new value. Retiring and re-detecting the stall, closure deadlines and manual dispositions also behave as you designed them, with tests for each, and the as-built note matches the code, with one gap below.

One change, please: keep the needs-input display and its reason, but keep main's stall recovery for the same items. The input count shouldn't retire or suppress the existing stall finding, its backstop or a manual disposition, even when the prompt is confirmed as showing.

The reason is that the input signal isn't always current. From reading the code:

  • Codex: when the pane can't be captured, a permission request still counts, with the reason permission_request_unverified.
  • Claude: OpenRig doesn't record the answer to a permission or elicitation prompt, so the Notification stays set until the next Stop, UserPromptSubmit or idle notification.

In our checks, with constructed signals rather than a live prompt, the Claude signal stayed set after work resumed. For both the Codex and the Claude signal, this branch then closed the open stall finding ("stuck-sweep resolved: owner needs input") and still showed no backstop after 24 hours, where main kept the finding open.

So:

  • the display stays, with its reason, including the claimed and pending cases it already covers;
  • stall detection, the finding, backstops and manual dispositions stay as on main, and so do closure deadlines and attention;
  • for permission_request_unverified, the evidence today reads owner needs input: permission_request_unverified, which states the input as a fact. Please word that case so it reads as unverified; reusing the existing reason is enough, with no new state;
  • the retirement and re-detection code can go if nothing else needs it.

The mechanism is yours.

To be plain about the cost: this keeps main's stall alerts for real input waits too, so the noise reduction you aimed for isn't part of this PR. The needs-input reason on the item still helps whoever gets the alert see why.

One doc point: the as-built note says this applies to a claimed item in progress, but a pending item that keeps its claim (after an update back to pending, or a reopen) also reads needs-input. Please name that case.

After your push, we'll review that change.

@Aschenbath @mvschwarz — scope coordination before a possible contribution, not a review finding against this PR and not a competing implementation claim.

We read the current CONTRIBUTING.md and want to avoid overlapping #1313 and #1177. We observed a continuation gap on a Pi seat with daemon 0.6.10 advertising commit 3001cc436656c435e54425443e708e3e2d8c7d68. Current upstream main at this read is e0c65c41e429678272522eb5f9875583a69b48a5; we have not executed a reproduction on that newer main or on your PR head e96b60c8.

Sanitized observed sequence (relative times; not a synthetic test result):

  1. A queue item entered in-progress through update, with claimedAt: null and no closure deadline.
  2. A parked-owner wake was successfully delivered and consumed. Tools and meaningful work followed, then the turn ended with work outstanding and no new park. That roughly 77-second burst occurred entirely between two evaluations of a 120-second policy interval.
  3. Subsequent evaluations retained the prior episode and reported already-woken-this-episode. The waiting projection displayed a pickup deadline, while the inspected stuck-sweep predicate required a nonnull claim for in-progress pickup detection.

This was not a lost transport message. Historical activity-hook/oracle inputs are incomplete, so we do not claim to have proved every historical detector decision. The proposed regression would deterministically distinguish successful delivery with no consumption from a consumed wake followed by a later stop, including consumption between policy samples.

The actual existing unclaimed ladder arm is present: pending, null-claim, handed-off batons. It must remain; it is not the same state as the observed in-progress/null-claim item. The separate claimed in-progress failed-delivery arm also does not describe a successful delivery in this case.

Requested boundary:

  • Should the in-progress/null-claim projection and sweep-eligibility regression join fix(queue): distinguish input waits from stalled claims #1313 (with fix(daemon): route human custody findings to the closing agent #1177's sweep changes preserved), or be a coordinated follow-up after it?
  • Is a narrowly scoped contribution in packages/daemon/src/domain/policies/parked-owner-consumer.ts and packages/daemon/test/parked-owner-consumer.test.ts appropriate for episode closure based on existing authoritative consumption/turn evidence, with connected pickup/waiting/ladder regression coverage coordinated with you? We would not assume a policy-only edit alone fixes both invariants.

Any candidate must preserve active tools/children, intentional human pauses and interactive prompts, generation identity, at-most-once delivery, and crash/restart continuity. Missing producer evidence must not become a fabricated consumption receipt. No additional controller or parallel wake mechanism is proposed.

No patch, first-red run, fork, daemon/database modification or runtime restart has been made for this contribution. We will not code over your active scope before an accepted disposition. Private transcripts, instance paths and raw operational logs are intentionally omitted. This comment requests scope coordination only; it is not upstream acceptance or merge authority.

Thanks, @rareba, for asking before writing anything, and for the careful account of the in-progress task with no claim whose consumed wake isn't followed up. We'll keep it separate from #1313, which stays as its author has it. We're checking the case against current main, and we'll reply here about whether and how a contribution would fit.

Thanks again, @rareba. We checked both conditions against current main (e0c65c41), separately from #1313, which keeps its scope.

How: the real daemon queue, watchdog and activity code over a migrated SQLite database, with the transport outcomes and the wake's consumption supplied as controlled test inputs. So this is a controlled reproduction on main, not a native Pi run and not a reconstruction of your 0.6.10 run. Both reproduced:

  1. A queue item moved to in-progress through update, with no claim: the waiting view advertises a stuck-sweep pickup check, but pickup derivation reads the item as unclaimed and the sweep selects only claimed in-progress items, so nothing picks it up.
  2. A consumed wake followed by work and a stop, all between two policy evaluations: the episode stays already-woken-this-episode, with or without an update to the owner's item. Separately, after a close, an unchanged item still suppresses a later wake.

Pickup consistency: a focused PR is welcome if you'd like to take it. We're after genuine recovery for that item, not only removing the misleading deadline. Please keep update and claim distinct (no claim or closure time stamped as a side effect, and the owner not shown as having claimed), anchor on the item's real state entry and meaningful activity with the existing in-progress grace and activity handling (not an invented claim time or creation age alone), say plainly in the finding that there was no claim, and reuse the existing recovery ownership. The pending, null-claim, handed-off failed-delivery recovery, the claimed path and active-work handling stay as they are, with a regression from an HTTP update through the waiting view and the sweep alongside those cases. No new timer, controller or refusal at queue update.

Episode closure: we'd welcome a short outline before any code. The result we want: once positive evidence shows that the same agent, in the same generation, consumed the earlier wake and resumed work, a later parked diagnosis can start a new episode, even when the obligation set and the item are unchanged. Delivery success, a passing activity notification, an unrelated turn, a note, elapsed time or missing evidence isn't that evidence. Checking the current parked state can't recover an interval that fell between samples, so the open question is the producer: which existing evidence shows consumption (per runtime where they differ), how it's tied to the wake and the agent's generation, how it survives a daemon restart and telemetry pruning, and what happens when it's missing. One send per real episode stays. We're looking at the same seams and will read your outline alongside that.

Neither change joins #1313, and none of this promises a merge, release or date. Thanks for the careful report and for asking first.

An update for @rareba on the episode side. We've finished looking at whether OpenRig can tell, from what it records today, that a seat took up a specific wake and finished that work, not only that the wake was delivered.

For Claude seats there isn't enough to go on yet: the wake text carries no reference to that particular wake, and Claude's hooks don't say which turn ended, so a later stop can't be credited to one wake. Claude seats keep today's behaviour when that evidence is missing.

A small route that tags each wake and matches the tag when the work it started ends looks possible, but it isn't chosen or built. It would have to follow each wake from delivery to the end of that work, check that the session reporting it is the seat's current one, and stay unknown when it's ambiguous, rather than counting whatever event comes next.

So our last reply stands: a focused PR for pickup consistency is welcome, and for the episode side we'd like an outline before code. If your outline takes the tagged route, we'd judge it on its own, with those limits in mind.

A reminder, @Aschenbath, on the change in our last comment to you: keep the needs-input display and its reason, including the claimed and pending cases it already covers, but keep main's stall recovery for the same items. The input count shouldn't retire or suppress the existing stall finding, its backstop or a manual disposition, and closure deadlines and attention stay as on main. Please word the permission_request_unverified case so it reads as unverified, and, in the as-built note, name the pending item that keeps its claim. The retirement and re-detection code can go if nothing else needs it.

Main has moved since this branch's base, with newer changes to queue-repository.ts, queue-stuck-sweep.ts, execution-view.ts and the as-built note, so please update onto current main and keep them. If we haven't heard from you or seen a push by the end of Thursday, 22 October (UTC), we'll decide then whether to finish it ourselves, with credit to you, or close it with thanks, and we'll say which here.
