What a user gets

rig seat launch <seat> --fresh --plan [--stop] [--json] inspects one seat without changing it. The narrowed preview reports the target, current occupant, stop effects, blockers, unchanged siblings, startup counts, and complete/launchable outcomes, addressing #889 and the review in #1156 (comment).

  • Help/docs explain that sibling seats stay attached and untouched, runtime adapters compose a new command from current settings, and the seat's launch environment and managed executable selection still apply
  • Per-adapter command previews, command-builder extractions, preview interfaces, and their tests have been removed; runtime adapter files match the PR base
  • A successful preview exits 0 even when blocked or incomplete. Scripts must inspect launchable === true; request/lookup/context failures still exit nonzero
  • --fresh remains required; --reason is optional for preview and required for execution
  • Shared read-only resolution and ownership/history validation remain. Live historical occupants are refused before stopping the current occupant; execution resolves and validates again
  • Adopted-occupant refusals again identify the seat and explain manual stop followed by rig seat clean
  • A distinct preview endpoint fails closed against older daemons and never falls back to execution

How you verified it

Base: bed4d4580f615825042e1aa6aef7010c10979bae. Revised head: c88f11db12a3e8a0a501f3e6371bef3815dc724d. Tree: 4af6aa3a85cd818d75dc74735333fa2bc299bc97. Each appended commit changes at most 200 added/deleted lines, including removals.

  • Latest message-only follow-up preserves the live historical session name in both preview and execution, and replaces the misleading stop instruction with an explicit warning: rig seat stop targets the seat's latest session, not a selected historical session, and may stop the current occupant instead. No new stop command or API is added. Full npm run lint (including daemon build) and 69 focused lifecycle/route tests passed on c88f11db; independent review found no issues
  • The following broader checks were run on the preceding narrowed revision 9f51a3d3, before that message-only change
  • npm run build and npm run lint: passed
  • Focused daemon lifecycle/route/model-guard suites: 78 passed; focused CLI launch/lifecycle suites: 65 passed
  • Initial npm test stopped in repository checks because native prerequisites/default cache paths were unavailable. With official task-local rsync/tmux/netcat and a writable cache, npm run test:repo passed: 286 passed, 1 skipped, with first-run/docs/context-pack checks
  • After a serial rebuild, the bounded daemon/CLI/TUI sweep ran to completion: daemon 14,288 passed / 101 failed / 10 skipped / 5 todo; CLI 4,037 passed / 12 failed / 7 skipped; TUI 892 passed / 21 failed. These are not green full-suite results. Private tmux/Unix sockets and network-interface access are restricted in this cloud; process-count assumptions and unchanged shell-helper timeouts also fail. Remaining CLI timeout causes are not all established. All revised fresh-launch, route, and CLI lifecycle tests passed within that sweep
  • npm run test:ui: 1,728 passed, 1 skipped, 1 failed. The existing Markdown child-render test failed at tsx IPC listen EPERM
  • The narrowed revision 9f51a3d3 subsequently passed all GitHub Tests and Portability jobs. These do not validate the latest message-only follow-up. On c88f11db, Tests and Portability currently report action_required, awaiting maintainer approval

Independent review found no remaining code findings. No test was weakened to bypass the environment limits.

Tests retain SQLite-byte equality and no tmux start/create/kill/send, startup projection/delivery/launch, lifecycle lock, invalidation or activity-swap assertions. They cover unchanged sibling occupants, live/adopted/collision/typing-guard/historical blockers, unknown tmux/pane identity, safe parser/probe failures, and state changes between preview and execution. CLI tests cover JSON/human output, all three eligibility outcomes with successful preview exit status, request failures, and older-daemon fail-closed behavior.

This touches the launch artery. The existing scenario DSL does not bind seat launch --plan; deterministic CLI, HTTP route and SQLite lifecycle tests cover the contract. No real provider or user agent was launched. A plan does not reserve the seat or establish native-client readiness.

Anything you were unsure about

There is still no supported selector for stopping one historical session without targeting the seat's latest session. This change removes the misleading instruction and states that limitation; adding historical-session targeting is outside this preview PR. CodeRabbit's latest review raised no new actionable comments but retains this broader workflow concern.

Unreadable tmux remains complete: false with launchable: null, unless a known blocker already establishes false. A successful preview process exit therefore means observation returned successfully, not that a later launch will succeed. Execution preserves the lifecycle lock, stop/clean sequence, and final positive-absence check. The intentional execution change is refusing unsafe historical state before stopping the current managed occupant.

If this is security-related

This is a launch-preview feature within the existing trusted-environment model. It does not change authentication or permission configuration. Preview does not create startup material or write lifecycle/queue state; errors do not expose startup text or raw process output.

  • One concern per PR; no version bump; no CHANGELOG.md edit
  • Tests added or updated where the change is testable
  • I listed the checks I ran, their results, and any checks I could not run

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added seat launch --plan to preview a fresh launch without starting or stopping processes or changing lifecycle records.
    • Preview results show launch eligibility, blockers, startup counts, occupant and stop requirements, and sibling-seat impact. Scripts should check launchable === true before proceeding.
    • Previews require --fresh; --reason remains required when executing a launch. Blocked or incomplete previews can still exit successfully.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Previews report incomplete status when process information cannot be verified. Older daemons refuse preview requests rather than starting a launch as a fallback. Plan timeouts now clarify that no launch was requested and recommend retrying the preview.

Walkthrough

The change adds a read-only fresh-launch plan in the daemon, exposes it through a separate endpoint, and adds CLI preview output. Fresh-launch execution shares context resolution and occupant validation with planning. Tests and the guide cover preview behavior and outcomes.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to c88f1

A live older session can prevent a fresh launch, with no supported command to stop that session specifically. The warning now avoids directing operators to stop the current occupant, but the blocked workflow still needs a safe resolution before merge.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Build the preview binding the same way startNode builds it.

planFresh builds the preview binding with store.apply(...) and adds nonInterruptive. Execution goes through StartupOrchestrator.startNode, which also applies claudeManagedBlockFile. The Claude preview does not read that field today, so the command output is currently correct. However, the binding construction now exists twice, and the two copies can drift apart. If they diverge, the preview can show a command that execution does not run. Consider extracting one shared binding builder.

Welcome, @XTLine, and thanks for your first PR here. As you describe it, rig seat launch <seat> --fresh --plan previews one seat's fresh launch without changing anything, which is the preview proposed in #889, and you've included the output contract. We'll review it and comment here.

@mvschwarz

Thanks, @XTLine, for a careful PR and for answering #889 so directly. We've reviewed it, and we'd like to narrow it to the parts that help most.

  1. Keep the help text and docs. "Sibling seats stay attached and untouched. The runtime adapter composes a new command from current settings; launch does not replay a stored wrapper command" answers rig seat launch: add --plan, and document its effect on live siblings and which launch path it uses #889's two questions on its own. Please add one clause: the seat's launch environment and managed executable selection still apply. Someone asking whether their launcher wrapper applies needs that too.
  2. Keep the validation refactor (resolveFreshLaunch, validateFreshHistory, validateFreshCollision). It fixes a real ordering problem: on main, a fresh launch with --stop stops the current occupant before it refuses a live historical one. Refusing first is better. It could also stand as its own small PR; either way is fine.
  3. Make --plan smaller, built on that same validation: the target, the current occupant, whether a stop is required and would happen, the blockers (claimed, collision, typing guard, a live historical occupant), sibling seats and startup counts. Please drop the per-adapter previewLaunch methods, RuntimeLaunchPreview, the redaction and their tests. The command templates are mostly placeholders, and partial for Codex and for permission-managed Claude seats, so they don't show the real command, and each would have to keep tracking its adapter's command builder.
  4. For the smaller --plan, separate the exit codes: exit 0 when the preview itself succeeds, and report launchable in the output (distinct exit codes would also work). Today it exits 1 whenever the preview is partial, which is many Claude seats and every Codex seat, so a script can't tell "couldn't see everything" from "would be refused".
  5. Restore the adopted-occupant refusal's seat name and guidance from main: "Stop the adopted process yourself, then run rig seat clean before launching fresh."

After your push, we'll review the updated change. Thanks again.

Thanks for the review. @mvschwarz I’ve pushed a narrower version addressing your feedback:

  • Removed the per-adapter command previews and their API/tests
  • Kept the shared validation and the historical-occupant check before stopping the current occupant
  • Limited the plan to the target, occupant, stop requirements, blockers, sibling seats, and startup counts
  • Made successful previews exit 0, with launchable reporting eligibility separately
  • Clarified that launch environment and managed executable selection still apply, and restored the adopted-seat name and manual stop/rig seat clean guidance

Build, lint, repository checks, and focused tests passed locally. The PR description documents the remaining full-suite failures and environment limits; CI for the new head is awaiting approval.
Please take another look when convenient. Thanks!

Thanks, @XTLine, the narrowed version does what we asked. The per-adapter previews are gone and the launch commands are unchanged from main. The checks now run before the current agent is stopped, with the same refusals main gives, so a failed fresh launch no longer leaves the seat stopped. And --plan only reads, and exits 0 when it succeeds.

One small change, in one message: when a historical occupant is still live, the refusal now reads "A historical occupant is still live; fresh launch refuses to change this seat." Main's refusal for the same case named the live session and said how to stop it ("Stop a live seat first with: rig seat stop"). Could you keep both in the new message, so the person knows which session it is and what to run?

Optionally, the session_live refusal for the canonical session now names that session rather than the seat reference as typed. Either is fine as long as the message makes clear which seat it means.

After that it's ready from the review side, with a final maintainer check before merge.

Add a supported target for historical sessions.

rig seat stop <seat> stops the latest session for the resolved seat. If an older historical session is live, the command can stop the current occupant while leaving the named blocker live. rig seat clean also refuses while any non-terminal session remains live.

The current CLI, route, and stopSeat API provide no historical-session selector. Add a supported command that targets the exact historical session, and use it in this refusal guidance. The command must stop only that session and preserve the current occupant. Then retry the fresh launch; do not direct users to the current seat-level stop command.

Thanks, @XTLine, 3682dcc2 is what we asked for: when an earlier session is still live, the refusal names that session and says how to stop it, in both the plan and the launch. With that, it's ready from the review side. A final maintainer check remains before merge, and we'll update here.

@mvschwarz

Thanks for catching that, @XTLine. You're right: rig seat stop acts on the seat's latest session, which at that point is the current agent, so the guidance we asked you to keep would have pointed at the wrong session. That was our mistake in the last two comments. The new text is accurate, and it's ready from the review side as it stands. A final maintainer check remains before merge, and we'll update here.

Optional, only if you agree: the refusal now names the live session but doesn't say what to do with it, and no command stops one named historical session. A single string like this would give the route, the same shape as the adopted-occupant refusal:

Check that session (rig capture ) and end it yourself if it is no longer needed, then retry; rig seat stop targets this seat's latest session, not that one.

If you'd rather leave it as is, that's fine.

Approved at c88f11d. rig seat launch --fresh --plan previews a fresh seat launch without changing anything: it reads only and exits 0. Every refusal keeps main's error code, and when an earlier occupant is still live the message names its session and warns that the stop command acts on the seat's latest session. Required CI passed at this head, on current main for its files.
