Using \x{...} for Unicode codepoints above \xFF will cause grep -P to exit with an error ('character value in \x{...} sequence is too large') unless the PCRE engine is specifically in UTF mode. Since this check uses -a to scan files as byte streams, using raw UTF-8 byte sequences is more resilient.
