fix(ci): the invisible-character gate never matched anything#70hyperpolymath wants to merge 1 commit into
Conversation
MEASURED 2026-08-27: this gate's pattern caught 0 OF 6 invisible-character test
cases. It has never detected an NBSP, zero-width space, BOM, soft hyphen, bidi
override or word joiner.
ROOT CAUSE: the pattern used UTF-8 BYTE sequences (\xc2\xa0) while grep -P
matches CHARACTERS. Bytes c2 a0 are ONE character U+00A0; \xc2\xa0 asks for TWO
characters, U+00C2 then U+00A0, which is never present.
grep -P '\xc2\xa0' -> miss
grep -P '\x{a0}' -> MATCH
Only \x00 worked, being single-byte in both readings.
FIXED: codepoint escapes; C0 control characters \x01-\x08,\x0B,\x0C,\x0E-\x1F
added (TAB/LF/CR excluded); and grep -a, without which grep skips any NUL-bearing
file as binary.
The C0 range matters: a stray BACKSPACE byte made a workflow unparseable in
developer-ecosystem, so it never ran, and this linter called it clean.
Canonical fix: hyperpolymath/empty-linter#70. 1 file(s) here.
VERIFIED: YAML re-parsed, and the corrected pattern was confirmed to catch a real
NBSP before the change was kept.
📝 WalkthroughSummary by CodeRabbit
WalkthroughThe workflow updates its invisible-character pattern to use Unicode code points, adds C0 control characters, and scans binary files as text. ChangesInvisible-character gate
Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to The workflow’s invisible-character check was corrected for several code points, but the BOM expression may still be invalid for the selected regex mode; because errors are tolerated, the check could silently pass files containing a BOM. Merge should wait for this pattern and exit-status issue to be fixed or explicitly accepted. Poem

Pull Request Overview
The proposed change to use Unicode codepoint escapes (\x{...}) for character detection is likely to cause runtime failures in the CI environment. GNU grep -P typically requires an explicit UTF mode to handle codepoints above \xFF, and using the -a (text) flag to treat files as byte streams often conflicts with this, leading to 'character value is too large' errors. While the goal of expanding the gate's coverage is valid, the implementation should be adjusted to use raw UTF-8 byte sequences for stability. Additionally, the file scanning logic should be optimized to reduce process overhead.
About this PR
- The transition to PCRE codepoint escapes for characters above \xFF is risky. In many CI environments, grep -P will error out when encountering these sequences if it is processing files as byte streams without an explicit UTF-8 locale or flag, especially when -a is used to force text processing of binary-looking files.
Test suggestions
- Verify detection of Non-Breaking Space (U+00A0) in a source file
- Verify detection of a C0 control character (e.g., Backspace \x08)
- Verify detection of Byte Order Mark (U+FEFF)
- Verify that files containing NUL bytes (\x00) are scanned and matched by other patterns due to the '-a' flag

🔴 HIGH RISK
Using \x{...} for Unicode codepoints above \xFF will cause grep -P to exit with an error ('character value in \x{...} sequence is too large') unless the PCRE engine is specifically in UTF mode. Since this check uses -a to scan files as byte streams, using raw UTF-8 byte sequences is more resilient.

🟡 MEDIUM RISK
Suggestion: The -r flag is redundant since find is already specifying the files to scan. Additionally, using {} + instead of {} ; improves performance by batching multiple files into fewer grep process invocations.

Measured 2026-08-27: this gate caught 0 of 6 invisible-character test cases. It has never detected an NBSP, zero-width space, BOM, soft hyphen, bidi override or word joiner.
Root cause
The pattern used UTF-8 byte sequences (
\xc2\xa0) whilegrep -Pmatches characters. Bytesc2 a0are one character U+00A0;\xc2\xa0asks for two, U+00C2 then U+00A0 — never present.Only
\x00worked, being single-byte in both readings. The gate ran, passed, and could not see what it exists to see.Fixed
\x01-\x08,\x0B,\x0C,\x0E-\x1Fadded (TAB/LF/CR excluded)grep -a— without it grep skips any NUL-bearing file as binaryThe C0 range matters: a stray backspace byte made a workflow unparseable in
developer-ecosystem, so it never ran — and this linter called it clean.Canonical fix: hyperpolymath/empty-linter#70. 1 file(s) here.
Verified: YAML re-parsed, and the corrected pattern was confirmed to catch a real NBSP before the change was kept.
