This PR requires redhat-developer/vscode-xml#1179

Move variable resolution from vscode-xml client to lemminx server so all LSP clients benefit. Variables are resolved per-document at match time instead of once globally from the active editor, fixing the issue where variables only worked for the currently focused file.

Supported variables:

  • ${workspaceFolder}, ${workspaceFolderBasename}, ${fileWorkspaceFolder}
  • ${file}, ${fileDirname}, ${fileBasename}, ${fileBasenameNoExtension}
  • ${fileExtname}, ${relativeFile}, ${relativeFileDirname}
  • ${env:Name}

Resolved PathMatcher is cached per association so repeated matches for the same document (e.g. on each keystroke) only pay a string comparison.

Fixes vscode-xml#629, vscode-xml#1047, vscode-xml#745, vscode-xml#1056

📝 Walkthrough

XML file-association patterns and schema system IDs now support file, workspace, and environment variables. The content model plugin supplies workspace-folder URIs at startup and updates them when folders change. Tests cover variable resolution, association matching, and system-ID resolution.

Changes: XML file-association variable support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Resolve file-association variables

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 0670a

Some schema associations can fail for non-file documents, workspace folders with glob characters, or Windows patterns using ${pathSeparator}. These cases should be addressed before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 0670a

Document-derived text can be reinterpreted as requests for the language server's environment variables and then included in schema requests. Exposure depends on configured associations, available secrets and permitted network access.

Retained concerns

  • High · security · inferred: Substitution promotes document-controlled path text into server environment lookup instructions. For example, a POSIX file named ${env:API_TOKEN}.xml under an association using ${fileBasenameNoExtension} introduces an environment reference even when the configured template contains no explicit environment reference. If the template selects a remote schema and the value is URL-compatible, that value can be included in an outbound schema request. Configuration authors can also reference server environment variables directly. The disclosure outcome is conditional, but the new server-side authority and reinterpretation are supported by source.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The independently exposed authority is the environment of the server process, not only the current document or workspace. An attacker needs accepted association configuration, or control of path text consumed by an existing variable-bearing association. Disclosure also requires a defined value and an observable loading or output path. Resource access remains bounded by the server's existing filesystem and network permissions; deployment and tenant isolation were not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A configured schema template such as https://schemas.example/${fileBasenameNoExtension}.xsd processes a POSIX document named ${env:API_TOKEN}.xml into a URI containing the server's API_TOKEN value, if defined and URL-compatible. The environment scan does not distinguish the introduced token from one written in configuration. A subsequent remote load can disclose the value to that schema endpoint; attacker receipt depends on control or observability of the endpoint. This is a source-derived conditional attack path, not an executed disclosure test.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Existing controls include configurable external-resource downloading, cache-path traversal checks, protocol checks and rejection of insecure redirects from secure requests. The direct association resolver declines requests with an explicit non-null system ID. These controls do not restrict which environment names substitution reads. External-entity resolution defaults false, but XSD model creation still loads the supplied grammar URI.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The immutable matcher cache limits cross-document state confusion, but it does not make workspace refresh atomic across associations and documents. Validation can execute asynchronously while workspace notifications dispatch directly. A coherent refresh generation across interruption and overlap remains unproven; no separate material security consequence from that uncertainty was established.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Parse variable tokens only from the original configured template and treat replacement values as literal data. This would prevent filenames and workspace paths from introducing additional environment lookups while preserving explicitly configured substitutions.
  • proposed — Define an explicit trust policy for server environment access, such as trusted configuration opt-in or a permitted-name set, especially when the server runs remotely or with credentials unavailable to the workspace author. Treat outbound URI policy as complementary protection rather than assuming external-entity settings cover initial schema requests.

Re-validate open documents after workspace folders change.

The handler updates the URIs, but it does not reset grammars or trigger validation for open documents. Documents whose associations use ${workspaceFolder} keep stale diagnostics until the next edit or save. In addition, the plugin mutates workspaceFolderUris in place while resolver threads can read the same list. Pass a copy instead: new ArrayList<>(workspaceFolderUris).

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Use forward slashes in resolved values that feed globs and URIs.

resolve puts Path.toString() values into patterns and system IDs. On Windows these values contain backslashes. FileSystems.getDefault().getPathMatcher("glob:...") treats a backslash as an escape character. A pattern such as ${workspaceFolder}/data/*.xml becomes C:\ws\data/*.xml, and that glob does not match the intended files. The same backslash paths go into system IDs that XMLEntityManager.expandSystemId treats as URIs. As a result, variable-based associations can fail on Windows.

Normalize path separators to / for glob and URI use. Do not apply that change to ${pathSeparator}.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Make the shared matcher cache thread-safe.

lastResolvedPattern and lastResolvedPathMatcher are written as two separate fields. Concurrent validation of different documents can interleave between those two writes. One thread can then pair a stale pattern with another document's matcher, which can return a wrong match for per-document variables such as ${fileDirname}.

Store the pattern and matcher together in one immutable holder in a volatile field. Alternatively, keep the matcher in a local variable.

Fix the Windows separator normalization. Backslash is the glob escape character.

On Windows, Path.toString() returns C:\...\data. Line 121 then also turns every / into \. In Java glob syntax, \ escapes the next character, so \*.xml matches a literal * and the path segments do not match. As a result, matches returns false for every variable pattern on Windows. The four failing windows-latest tests show this failure: matchesWithFileDirnameVariable, matchesWithWorkspaceFolderVariable, matchesCachesResolvedPathMatcher and matchesWithFileDirnameVariablePerDocument.

The Windows glob matcher accepts / as a separator. Normalize in the other direction: convert \ to /. A remaining risk is that resolved path values with glob metacharacters ([, {, *, ?) are not escaped. Consider escaping the resolved variable values before substitution.

Escape metacharacters in substituted path values before compiling the glob.

When ${fileDirname} resolves to a directory such as a[b], the matcher compiles .../a[b]/*.xml as a Java glob. [b] is treated as a character class, so the document in the literal a[b] directory does not match its own association. The resolver reaches this path through XMLFileAssociationResolverExtension.resolve() and getExternalGrammarLocation().

The current backslash normalization does not escape [ or other metacharacters. Escape only substituted path values after separator normalization, and preserve glob operators written in the configured pattern. Escaping only the configured pattern would not fix characters introduced by ${fileDirname}.

Preserve glob escapes in the configured pattern.

When a pattern contains ${fileDirname}/report\[draft\].xml, this replacement also converts its intentional glob escapes to /. The resulting glob cannot match report[draft].xml, so the association does not apply. Normalize separators in substituted path values without changing escapes in the configured pattern. On POSIX, the substituted paths need no backslash conversion. Java glob syntax defines backslash as an escape character. (docs.oracle.com)

🌐 Web query:

official VS Code documentation or source for fileWorkspaceFolder and workspaceFolder behavior when workspace folders are nested

💡 Result:

**Short answer:** nested workspace folders are not explicitly covered in the official documentation I found.

- The official [VS Code 1.52 release notes](https://code.visualstudio.com/updates/v1_52) introduce `${fileWorkspaceFolder}` as the workspace-folder path for the file in the active editor. They don’t say which folder wins when workspace roots are nested. ([code.visualstudio.com](https://code.visualstudio.com/updates/v1_52?utm_source=openai))
- The [variables reference](https://github.com/microsoft/vscode-docs/blob/main/docs/reference/variables-reference.md) says `${workspaceFolder}` is scoped to the folder where the configuration is used; `${workspaceFolder:name}` selects a named root in a multi-root workspace. It likewise doesn’t specify nested-root precedence. ([github.com](https://github.com/microsoft/vscode-docs/blob/main/docs/reference/variables-reference.md?utm_source=openai))
- The [extension API](https://code.visualstudio.com/api/references/vscode-api) defines `workspace.getWorkspaceFolder(uri)` as returning the workspace folder containing a URI, but doesn’t document nested-folder tie-breaking. The VS Code team’s [multi-root API guidance](https://github.com/microsoft/vscode/wiki/Adopting-Multi-Root-Workspace-APIs) gives the same general description, not a nesting rule. ([code.visualstudio.com](https://code.visualstudio.com/api/references/vscode-api?WT.mc_id=javascript-0000-jopapa&utm_source=openai))

So the docs establish the variables’ general purpose, but **not whether a nested file resolves to the inner or outer root**. I also haven’t found a source establishing that `${fileWorkspaceFolder}` and `getWorkspaceFolder(uri)` necessarily use identical precedence for nested roots.

🌐 Web query:

GitHub microsoft vscode source workspace.getWorkspaceFolder nested folders isEqualOrParent workspace.ts folder ordering

💡 Result:

In the current `main` source, `Workspace.getFolder(resource)` returns `this.foldersMap.findSubstr(resource)`, or `null` if no folder matches. `updateFoldersMap()` inserts folders in array order, but lookup uses the ternary search tree—not an explicit “first folder wins” loop or sort. ([github.com](https://github.com/microsoft/vscode/blob/main/src/vs/platform/workspace/common/workspace.ts))

**For nested workspace roots:** the lookup selects the deepest matching folder path (the longest matching URI prefix). So if both `/repo` and `/repo/packages/app` are workspace folders, a resource inside `app` resolves to the nested folder. That deepest-match explanation is an inference from `findSubstr`’s use on the URI-keyed tree; this file itself doesn’t spell out the behavior. ([github.com](https://github.com/microsoft/vscode/blob/main/src/vs/platform/workspace/common/workspace.ts))

`WorkspaceFolder.index` is documented as the folder’s ordinal number, but `getFolder` does not consult it to resolve overlaps. The cited source is the moving `main` branch; no version or commit was specified. ([github.com](https://github.com/microsoft/vscode/blob/main/src/vs/platform/workspace/common/workspace.ts))

🌐 Web query:

site:github.com/microsoft/vscode TernarySearchTree findSubstr longest prefix implementation

💡 Result:

In VS Code’s current `main`, `findSubstr(key)` returns the value for the **longest stored key that is a prefix of `key`**, or `undefined` if none matches. It walks matching segments, remembers each encountered node value as a candidate, and returns the final node’s value if the whole query matches; otherwise it returns the last saved candidate. ([github.com](https://github.com/microsoft/vscode/blob/main/src/vs/base/common/ternarySearchTree.ts))

That’s an interpretation of the implementation in the linked source; the inspected page is for `main`, not a specified release or commit. ([github.com](https://github.com/microsoft/vscode/blob/main/src/vs/base/common/ternarySearchTree.ts))

Citations:

- 1: https://github.com/microsoft/vscode/blob/main/src/vs/base/common/ternarySearchTree.ts
- 2: https://github.com/microsoft/vscode/blob/main/src/vs/base/common/ternarySearchTree.ts

Select the deepest matching workspace folder.

When a parent folder precedes a nested folder, findWorkspaceFolder returns the parent immediately. VS Code’s workspace lookup selects the longest matching URI prefix. This makes ${relativeFile} include the nested folder path and can prevent file associations from matching the nested workspace.

Replace only the current environment-variable occurrence.

The self-reference does not hang. For A=${env:A}x, startIndex advances past the inserted value, so the inserted token is skipped.

However, String.replace replaces every occurrence. With multiple occurrences, a later scan can process text inserted for an earlier occurrence and expand it again. Replace only the current occurrence:

🐛 Suggested fix

-				value = value.replace(variable, envValue);
+				value = value.substring(0, envStart) + envValue + value.substring(envEnd + 1);
				startIndex = envStart + envValue.length();

Java NIO PathMatcher glob syntax Windows backslash path separator official documentation

💡 Result:

Oracle’s `FileSystem.getPathMatcher` documentation establishes that `glob:` patterns match a `Path`’s string representation and gives a Windows-specific example: `C:\\*` matches `C:\foo` and `C:\bar`. The doubled backslash in the glob escapes a literal backslash; in Java source, write that pattern as `"glob:C:\\\\*"` because Java string literals also escape backslashes. ([docs.oracle.com](https://docs.oracle.com/en/java/javase/25/docs/api/java.base/java/nio/file/FileSystem.html?utm_source=openai))

So, on Windows, backslash can be the **path separator** in a glob, but it also has a **glob-escape** role: escape it in the pattern to match a literal separator. The default file system’s separator is platform-dependent. ([docs.oracle.com](https://docs.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/essential/io/misc.html?utm_source=openai))

site:docs.oracle.com Java PathMatcher glob syntax backslash Windows separator

💡 Result:

Oracle’s Java `PathMatcher` glob rules treat **backslash as an escape character**. So to match a literal Windows path separator, escape it in the glob: Oracle’s example `C:\\*` matches `C:\foo` and `C:\bar` on Windows. In a Java string literal, write that pattern as `"glob:C:\\\\*"`—Java string escaping adds another layer. ([docs.oracle.com](https://docs.oracle.com/en/java/javase/25/docs/api/java.base/java/nio/file/FileSystem.html?utm_source=openai))

The pattern is matched against the `Path`’s string representation, and the filesystem’s platform determines the path representation. ([docs.oracle.com](https://docs.oracle.com/en/java/javase/25/docs/api/java.base/java/nio/file/FileSystem.html?utm_source=openai))

Escape ${pathSeparator} for the Windows glob parser.

XMLFileAssociationResolverExtension passes configured associations to XMLFileAssociation.matches(URI). On Windows, ${pathSeparator} resolves to one backslash, but Java requires two runtime backslashes to represent one Windows separator in a glob. Therefore ${fileDirname}${pathSeparator}*.xml can escape * and fail to match.

Escape only ${pathSeparator} while preparing a glob. Keep the general resolver unchanged so non-glob uses retain the advertised separator and configured glob escapes remain intact.

Resolve environment variables before converting the document URI to a path.

For a non-file document URI, Paths.get(documentUri) can throw before ${env:Name} is resolved. XMLFileAssociationResolverExtension passes such document URIs to XMLFileAssociation.getResolvedSystemId, so the environment-based system ID can remain unresolved. Resolve ${env:Name} and other path-independent variables before the path conversion, while leaving path-dependent variables unchanged when no Path is available.

Escape substituted paths before glob matching.

If a workspace folder contains a Java glob metacharacter, ${workspaceFolder} inserts that character into the pattern passed to FileSystems.getDefault().getPathMatcher("glob:" + glob). Java can interpret the substituted path as glob syntax, so the association may not match the document in that folder.

Escape only substituted literal path components. Preserve configured glob syntax such as *.xml, and do not escape system IDs.

Move variable resolution from vscode-xml client to lemminx server so
all LSP clients benefit. Variables are resolved per-document at match
time instead of once globally from the active editor, fixing the issue
where variables only worked for the currently focused file.

Supported variables:
- ${workspaceFolder}, ${workspaceFolderBasename}, ${fileWorkspaceFolder}
- ${file}, ${fileDirname}, ${fileBasename}, ${fileBasenameNoExtension}
- ${fileExtname}, ${relativeFile}, ${relativeFileDirname}
- ${pathSeparator}, ${env:Name}

Resolved PathMatcher is cached per association so repeated matches for
the same document (e.g. on each keystroke) only pay a string comparison.
Backslashes are normalized to forward slashes before glob matching to
avoid the Windows glob escape issue where \* means literal asterisk.

Fixes vscode-xml#629, vscode-xml#1047, vscode-xml#745, vscode-xml#1056

Hi Angelo, I tested this PR with redhat-developer/vscode-xml#1179.

  • Each file now uses its own XSD
  • ${workspaceFolder} in pattern works
  • ${env:...} works
  • Full path in pattern works
  • I tested all the variables in the description and they all work, except ${pathSeparator}. It is in the PR description, but it is not supported. For example, ${fileDirname}${pathSeparator}data1.xsd gives:
Failed to read schema document '...${pathSeparator}data1.xsd'

Could you please check?

@MeherSru sorry I have forgotten to remove ${pathSeparator} from issue description.

I decided to not support ${pathSeparator}
