Summary

Chromium can leave a traced background tab uninitialized after a modified quote-link click even though the destination returned HTTP 200. Open the native new tab in the foreground with Control/Command+Shift-click, keeping the destination, original search page, normal navigation, tracing, and video assertions intact. Independent Control and Meta event checks ensure Shift cannot hide a regression in the application’s modifier passthrough guards.

Impact

Browser regression tests only. Public UI, admin UI, storage/schema, media, moderation, backup/restore, TLS/proxy, Tor, deployment, and application behavior are unchanged.

Validation

  • cargo fmt --all --check — passed.
  • cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets --all-features -- -D warnings -D clippy::all -D clippy::pedantic -D clippy::nursery -D clippy::cargo — passed.
  • cargo test --workspace --all-features — passed, 2,509 cases including doctests.
  • python3 -m unittest discover -s tools -p test_update_package.py — passed, seven cases.
  • npx playwright test tests/e2e/public-reading-polish.spec.ts --workers=2 --grep 'search post numbers and quotes' --repeat-each=3 — passed, 21 cases across seven local browser profiles, including no-JavaScript profiles.
  • npx playwright test tests/e2e/public-reading-polish.spec.ts --project=chromium --workers=2 --grep 'search post numbers and quotes' --repeat-each=20 --max-failures=3 — passed, 20 cases with a Linux Chromium engine in the official Playwright container connected to disposable local fixtures. This supplemental run does not replace the native GitHub browser suite.
  • git diff --check — passed.

Checklist

  • This change is narrowly scoped and preserves unrelated behavior.
  • No credentials, private keys, databases, backups, logs, media, runtime data, or generated artifacts are included.
  • Tests cover changed behavior and modifier interception.
  • Formatting, Clippy, Rust tests, and focused Playwright checks passed.
  • No user behavior, configuration, deployment, or operator expectations changed; documentation and changelog changes are unnecessary.
  • No schema changes.
  • Route names, IDs, fields, hooks, and no-JS fallbacks are preserved.
  • No new security-sensitive application changes.
