Summary

  • getToken() on a non-active session was emitting TokenUpdate, so AuthCookieService wrote that user's JWT into __session while the tab still showed the active user.
  • #hydrateCache had the same gap (shouldDispatchTokenUpdate = true for every session).
  • Both paths now require this session to be clerk.session / client.lastActiveSessionId. Inactive sessions still return a token; they just do not touch the cookie.

Fixes #9972

Test plan

  • Added a Session test: getToken() on session_other while clerk.session is session_active does not emit token:update, and still returns the JWT.
  • Existing token:update cases now set clerk.session.id to the session under test.
  • CI clerk-js Session tests

getToken() and hydrateCache were emitting TokenUpdate for every session, so a multi-session tab could authenticate as the wrong user.

📝 Walkthrough

Token updates now dispatch only when the session matches the active client session. This check applies during cache hydration and token fetching. The session ID comparison uses clerk.session.id, falling back to clerk.client.lastActiveSessionId. Tests cover a non-active session returning its token without dispatching token:update.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to e4a7f

This change stops getToken() on an inactive session from overwriting the __session cookie. A narrow race remains: switching sessions while a token request is pending can still write the former session's token. Re-check the active session just before dispatching; the risk is low and bounded.

Explanation

Issue #9972 requires only the active session to update __session, while getToken() on another session still returns a token. Session.#isActiveClientSession() compares the session ID with clerk.session.id and falls back to client.lastActiveSessionId. Both #hydrateCache and getToken() use this check before dispatching token:update. The new Session test verifies that an inactive session returns mockJwt and emits no token:update event. The changes also update active-session test setup and add the required patch changeset.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within issue #9972. The source change limits token-update dispatch for cache hydration and token retrieval. The test changes cover the active-session condition and inactive-session behavior. The changeset documents the fix. No unrelated product behavior is changed.

Recheck the active session before dispatching TokenUpdate.

shouldDispatchTokenUpdate is captured before cached-token resolution and before #fetchToken completes. If the active session changes during either operation, the stale true value can emit TokenUpdate for the former active session. AuthCookieService handles that event through updateSessionCookie without another active-session check.

Re-evaluate #isActiveClientSession() immediately before each TokenUpdate emission, including the cached-token and background-refresh paths.

call #isActiveClientSession() immediately before each dispatch instead of
relying on the earlier shouldDispatchTokenUpdate snapshot. Apply this to both
cached-token and background-refresh emissions so a session switch during token
