GitHub Actions documentation workflow_dispatch select branch run workflow checkout github.ref default event ref
💡 Result:
When you manually start a `workflow_dispatch` run, the **Branch** dropdown selects the branch to run on. That selected branch becomes the event ref: GitHub documents `GITHUB_REF` as the branch or tag that received the dispatch, and `GITHUB_SHA` as its latest commit. ([docs.github.com](https://docs.github.com/en/actions/how-tos/manage-workflow-runs/manually-run-a-workflow?utm_source=openai))
So the default checkout uses the selected ref:
```yaml
steps:
- uses: actions/checkout@v6
```
To check out a different ref explicitly, pass it to `actions/checkout`:
```yaml
- uses: actions/checkout@v6
with:
ref: ${{ github.ref }}
```
The workflow file must exist on the default branch for `workflow_dispatch` to be available. GitHub’s manual-run documentation also covers selecting a branch in the UI and using `--ref` with the CLI. ([docs.github.com](https://docs.github.com/en/actions/how-tos/manage-workflow-runs/manually-run-a-workflow?utm_source=openai))

Keep branch-selected code away from the Platform API key.
A manual dispatch can select another branch, and actions/checkout@v7 checks out that event ref by default. The up, run, and down steps then run that branch’s control-clerk-android with CLERK_PLATFORM_API_KEY. Unreviewed branch code can read or misuse the key. Put the secret in a protected GitHub environment restricted to trusted refs and requiring approval, or run the key-bearing work only from a trusted revision.

Not changing this in the PR.
Starting a workflow by hand needs write access to the repository, and anyone with write access can already push a branch whose workflow reads any repository secret. A gate on this one dispatch would not change who can reach the key.
Every other secret in this repo works the same way. manual-release.yml can be dispatched on any branch and reads the Maven Central credentials and the signing key as plain repository secrets, and no workflow here uses a protected environment.
Putting this key behind a protected environment means moving the secret in the repository settings, which this PR cannot do. It would also guard a test-only key more tightly than the publish credentials: this key can create and delete applications in one workspace that holds only throwaway test applications. If the repo moves its secrets into protected environments, this job should follow.
Leaving the thread open for a maintainer to decide.

@mikepitre Thanks for the guidance. Your write-access explanation changes the risk assessment: this dispatch does not give a new group access to the key. A gate on this workflow alone would not address repository-wide secret access.
I should have framed this as repository-wide hardening, not a required change for this PR. No change is requested here. The finding can stay open for the maintainer’s decision.
Would you like a follow-up issue for repository-wide protected environments?

Learning: In clerk/clerk-android, MOBILE_VERIFICATION_PLATFORM_API_KEY is scoped to one workspace containing only throwaway test applications and permits application creation and deletion. The repository's existing secret-access model trusts users with write access, including branch-selected manual workflows. Treat protected environments as repository-wide hardening rather than a requirement unique to .github/workflows/verify-e2e.yml. If the repository adopts protected environments for secrets, this workflow should follow that policy.

…and their release job The release workflow runs the verify end-to-end tests, so the Trailblaze trails, the screens they drove, and the jobs that ran them go together. That includes everything #1057 added for them. - trails/, scripts/run-trailblaze-tests.sh, scripts/run-e2e-shard.sh, scripts/e2e/, and .github/workflows/trailblaze-e2e.yml are deleted. That includes the Quickstart trail, which no workflow ran. - .github/workflows/e2e-checks.yml is deleted. Its contract check read the trails, and android-test.yml already runs :e2e:testDebugUnitTest on every pull request that is not a draft. - The e2e host loses TrailApp.kt, E2EViewModel.kt, the status panel, the account cleanup and its broadcast receiver, the TOTP typer, the fixtures, the unit tests of those, and the flat tags in E2ETags.kt. Every launch now shows the one home, with or without verify extras, so VerifyLaunchConfig no longer records whether a launch had any. - manual-release.yml gates create-release and publish on the checks job and the verify end-to-end job, and no longer passes CLERK_TEST_KEYS_JSON. - e2e/build.gradle.kts drops the E2E_CLERK_KEY_NAME lookup in .keys.json, the two view-model dependencies that only E2EViewModel used, and the JUnit dependency that only the removed tests used. .gitignore drops the Trailblaze paths. A run's addresses were 60 characters, such as verify_r20261013_141954_62f0_ab12cd34+clerk_test@example.com, and the tests type every one of them into the app. An address is now the time of day and the four characters of the run id, then four random characters: 14195462f0ab12+clerk_test@example.com. That is three typing commands where there were four. The first ten characters still say which run made the address, so the stand-in still limits a run to its own users and run still finds the users a form signed up. The prefix comes from a parse of the run id that fails on an id of another shape. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…an app of your own AGENTS.md named the verification skill as the way to prove a change. The proof is what matters: run the change on an emulator and put the screenshots or video on the pull request. Four hex characters gave a run 65,536 addresses, so a run that makes about 25 of them made the same one twice about once in 200 runs, and the second createUser then failed its test. The four characters now come from 36 symbols, which is 1,679,616 addresses for a run. The address stays 37 characters and its first ten still name the run. What & why
This PR makes a release run the 19 end-to-end tests in
e2e-tests/on an emulator and wait for them, and it removes the Trailblaze suite that gated a release until now. That includes everything #1057 added for it. After this PR, theverify-e2ejob is the only device gate on a publish, and that job has never run inside a real release. The tests and their CLI come from #1046, where theverify-clerk-androidskill is the instructions that point an agent at them. Until now they ran only on the machine of whoever was working on a change. They cover every scenario the trails did, including the three #1057 added: sign-up with a phone code, finishing MFA setup with an authenticator code, and deleting the account from Security..github/workflows/verify-e2e.yml(Verify end-to-end tests) runs every test on an emulator on the runner itself, withe2e-tests/bin/control-clerk-android up,run --all --backend local --retries 1 --github-report, anddown.manual-release.ymlcalls it as theverify-e2ejob.create-releaseneedsverifyandverify-e2e, andpublishruns only when both succeeded. Nothing runs it for a pull request.trails/,scripts/run-trailblaze-tests.sh,scripts/run-e2e-shard.sh,scripts/e2e/,trailblaze-e2e.yml, and its job in the release workflow with theCLERK_TEST_KEYS_JSONsecret it passed.TrailApp.kt,E2EViewModel.kt, the status panel, the account cleanup and its exported broadcast receiver, the TOTP typer, the fixtures, their unit tests, the flat tags inE2ETags.kt, and theE2E_CLERK_KEY_NAMElookup in.keys.json. Every launch now shows the same home.e2e-checks.ymlis deleted. Its contract check read the trails, and its other step ran:e2e:testDebugUnitTest, whichandroid-test.ymlhas run on every pull request that is not a draft since feat(verify): add the end-to-end test package and the verify-clerk-android skill #1046.down. That needs the repository secretMOBILE_VERIFICATION_PLATFORM_API_KEY. Without it the job fails in its first step and says why.verify-e2e-androidand kept for three days, unless the CLI's search finds a secret value in the run's files.To try it, start the workflow by hand on a branch:
