Stacked on #1017 (mike/client-state-store). Review and merge that first. Rebased onto the updated #1017 (f548c98), which is itself rebased on main (7044e69, with #1020, #1025, #1049, #1051 and the explicit-API, ABI-dump and detekt 2 gates). #1028's two ExternalAccountServiceTest cases (600 status, 503 mapping) are kept.

Merge blocker (still open): one manual production check is still needed that FAPI echoes clerk_redirect_state back on the callback, including on the transfer (__clerk_status=failed) and error redirects. Everything below relies on it and it has only been checked against clerk_go source.

Why

Architecture review finding #8: there are four redirect flows and each keeps its pending state its own way. SSO used four plain vars (SSOService). External accounts, hosted auth and magic links each used a different design. SSO and external-account flows did not cancel each other. Auth.handle and SSOManagerActivity routed callbacks differently. Three of the last five fixes in sso/ and externalaccount/ were the same bug: a pending result that never completed. Hosted auth, the one flow that hasn't produced bugs, locks its state, completes in a process-wide scope and always cleans up. This PR applies that pattern to every flow.

This PR also covers the related ticket: OAuth callbacks were not checked against a state, so another app could send ?error=x to the exported SSOReceiverActivity and cancel an in-flight sign-in. That attack was inferred, not reproduced.

Scope

  • New com.clerk.api.redirect.RedirectCoordinator holds one sealed PendingRedirect slot (Sso, ExternalAccountConnection, HostedAuth) behind one lock, with these rules:
    • Starting any flow completes the previous one with its own cancellation result (SSOCancellationException or HostedAuthCancellationException, same messages as before), so a waiting caller never hangs. SSO, external account and hosted auth now cancel each other in every direction.
    • When the caller is cancelled, the slot is freed. Every other exit also completes the caller's result and frees the slot: callback, user cancel, newer flow, launch failure, a completion that throws, or one that returns without a result.
    • Completion runs once per flow in a process-wide scope (the hosted-auth pattern). A duplicate callback joins the running completion. So does a re-attach after the completion has finished.
    • dispatch(uri) is the single router. SSOManagerActivity and Auth.handle both call it.
    • hasPendingRedirect: StateFlow<Boolean>.
    • Error reporting. Completion work runs detached from the caller's coroutine, so it would not see the caller's Clerk.auth.reportingFailures scope; failures from reload, SignUp.get, Clerk.auth.createSignUp / createSignIn would emit AuthEvent.Error once from the completion and again from the awaiting caller. complete() now runs the work inside withoutAuthErrorReporting { } (main's mechanism from fix(api): stop the two auth API layers drifting on enterprise sign-up, sendCode and error events #1026), so only the awaiting caller reports.
    • Recent flow. A finished flow is remembered so a repeat of its callback (duplicate delivery, activity recreation) joins its result, but only for 60 seconds and only if it had a state. Otherwise a stateless flow kept matching any callback-shaped URI, so Auth.handle swallowed the app's own deep links indefinitely.
  • SSOManagerActivity: recreation no longer interrupts SSO completion. The recreated activity dispatches the saved callback again and joins the completion, as hosted auth already did. The Completion kind enum is gone. Coming back without a callback cancels the pending flow, unless a callback is already completing it. Finishing after a callback that did not complete the flow it hosted (ignored, or for no flow) also fails that flow, since delivering the callback cleared its Custom Tab; a newer flow started meanwhile is left alone.
  • SSOReceiverActivity: asks RedirectCoordinator.receiverDelivery(uri). SSOManagerActivity is singleTask, so starting it clears the Custom Tab above it. While a flow is pending, only a callback that passes that flow's state check is forwarded. A native magic link is completed in the coordinator's scope without starting the manager, and any other callback (wrong state, or one that matches no flow) is dropped. With nothing pending, callbacks are forwarded as before.
  • State check (ticket). SDK-started OAuth, enterprise SSO, sign-up and external-account flows add clerk_redirect_state=<random> to the redirect_url they send. A callback with a missing or wrong state is dropped by SSOReceiverActivity and ignored by Auth.handle, and the pending flow keeps waiting. Details per flow:
    • SSO sign-in. SignIn.prepareFirstFactor with OAuth/EnterpriseSSO params adds the state and remembers it for the returned externalVerificationRedirectUrl. authenticateWithPreparedRedirect picks it up from there, so SSOService.authenticateWithRedirect and the UI's prepareFirstFactor → authenticateWithPreparedRedirect path are both covered.
    • SSO sign-up and external account. The SDK builds the redirect_url itself and adds the state.
    • Hosted auth. Unchanged: it already validates its own state.
    • Magic link. The callback carries flow_id and approval_token. They are checked against the persisted pending flow, and the server checks the PKCE verifier. That is already the state check. The pending flow stays in persistent storage, not the in-memory slot, because the email link can be opened after process death. The dispatcher routes it and dedupes concurrent deliveries of the same link.
    • No-state fallback. A redirect prepared outside SignIn.prepareFirstFactor has no SDK state in it, for example by a raw API call. It still accepts any clerk-scheme callback, as before, and logs a warning.
    • Which callbacks an SSO or external-account flow claims. Only a URI with a clerk scheme, or one that carries clerk_redirect_state, is matched against the pending flow. Any other URI is NotHandled, so Auth.handle returns false and the app routes it. Previously any URI with error, error_description, __clerk_status, __clerk_error_code or rotating_token_nonce was claimed while a flow was pending: the app's own myapp://payment?error=declined was swallowed (stateful flow) or completed the flow as cancelled (no-state flow). Hosted auth already matched on its stored redirect URL and is unchanged. The exported receiver only receives clerk-scheme URIs, so the receiver path is unaffected.
    • Dropped callbacks are logged at warn with the reason: missing clerk_redirect_state, clerk_redirect_state does not match the pending flow, no pending redirect flow matches it, or the hosted-auth validation message. A server that doesn't echo the state will show up as missing clerk_redirect_state in the field.
  • Server behavior this relies on, checked in clerk_go source, not against a live instance:
    • oauth.go and saml/http.go build the callback with urlUtils.AddQueryParameters(redirectURL, …), which keeps the existing query. Error redirects use the stored ost.RedirectURL, which already includes the state.
    • RedirectUrls.ExistsByURLAndInstance also matches the redirect URL with its query removed (exactURLCompatibilityCandidates, since MOBILE-441, Mar 2026), so the production redirect-URL allowlist still matches.
    • FAPI's own OAuth state sits between FAPI and the provider and never reaches the app. That is why the SDK adds its own.
  • ConfigurationManager: the 100 ms polling loop over three services is now a single withTimeoutOrNull(MAX) { hasPendingRedirect.first { !it } }, and hasPendingAuthFlow() reads hasPendingRedirect.value. Nothing else in ConfigurationManager changed. The now-unused LIFECYCLE_REFRESH_DEFER_STEP_MS is removed.
  • Background magic links: a failure while completing a magic link in the coordinator's scope is logged at warn and reported as unsuccessful. A CancellationException is rethrown instead of being swallowed by runCatching.
  • Deleted production code that only tests used: HostedAuthService.canHandle / isForgedCallback / cancelPendingAuthentication / hasPendingAuthentication, HostedAuthService.complete's unreachable invalid-callback branch (the coordinator now passes the callback it already validated), ExternalAccountService.cancelPendingExternalAccountConnection / hasPendingExternalAccountConnection, SSOService.cancelPendingAuthentication / hasPendingAuthentication / hasPendingExternalAccountConnection, and RedirectCoordinator.isRejected. Tests now go through RedirectCoordinator (dispatch, receiverDelivery, current(), cancelPending()).
  • HostedAuthService: its private pending store is replaced by the coordinator. createHostedAuth, requestHostedAuth and everything below them are untouched; fix(hosted-auth): refresh the client before retrying a signed_out create #1011 (signed-out retry refresh) is now on the base and carried through. The slot is taken before the creation request, so start frees it in a finally if the caller is cancelled or the request throws before the browser launches. Otherwise hasPendingRedirect stayed true and delayed foreground refreshes by up to 5 s.
  • Ported from main on rebase: SSOService uses SignIn.reload(rotatingTokenNonce), Clerk.auth.createSignUp(Transfer), prepareFirstFactorImpl and SafeUriLog. The state injection lives inside prepareFirstFactorImpl's reportingFailures block, so main's SSOService and SignIn.authenticateWithOAuth / authenticateWithEnterpriseSso (which call prepareFirstFactorImpl directly) all get it. Main's redirectUrl / transferable options on the Clerk.auth OAuth and enterprise-SSO entry points and sendEmailLink(redirectUri) are unchanged.
  • Clerk.reset() cancels through the coordinator.

Blast Radius

  • Public API: no signature changes. Everything touched is internal.
  • Behavior changes:
    • Redirect URLs (changelog item). SignIn.prepareFirstFactor with OAuth / EnterpriseSSO params now appends clerk_redirect_state=<random> to the redirect_url it sends, so the returned externalVerificationRedirectUrl and the callback carry it. This is a public behaviour change and needs a changelog entry. Redirect URLs sent for SDK-started OAuth, enterprise SSO, sign-up and external-account flows carry it too. Apps that compare the incoming callback URL string exactly would see the extra query param. Deep-link intent filters match on scheme, host and path, so they are unaffected.
    • Forged callbacks. A callback with a wrong or missing state no longer cancels or fails the flow. Auth.handle still returns true for it, so the app doesn't route a Clerk callback elsewhere.
    • Callbacks while a flow is pending. The exported receiver no longer starts the manager for a magic link or an unrelated Clerk callback while a redirect flow is pending (the magic link still completes, in the background).
    • Second hosted-auth start. A second startHostedAuth while one is pending now replaces the first; the first gets HostedAuthCancellationException. It used to fail with "already in progress". This matches how SSO already behaved.
    • SSO completion and recreation. SSO completion is no longer cut short when SSOManagerActivity is recreated. The flow completes with its real result instead of the "interrupted" failure (fix(sso): finish the bridge activity when it's recreated mid-completion #1008's case).
    • Custom redirect URLs. Auth.handle now also completes SSO callbacks on a custom (non-clerk) redirect URL when a flow is pending and the callback carries clerk_redirect_state (every SDK-prepared flow's does). It used to ignore them. A custom-scheme URI without the state is left to the app.
    • Leaving the browser mid-completion. Coming back from the browser no longer cancels a flow whose callback is already completing, for example one delivered through Auth.handle.
  • Expected conflicts:
    • test(api): make api and telemetry tests fail when the behaviour they cover breaks #1049 (test-audit-api) has landed on main. Its tests that called the methods this PR deletes are ported to RedirectCoordinator.dispatch / current() / cancelPending() rather than dropped (see Testing).
    • Item 9 (auth API) and item 12 (ClerkResult throws) if they touch SSOService, Auth.handle or HostedAuthService.
    • Item 13 (dead code): SSOService.completeAuthenticateWithRedirect and completeExternalConnection are already removed here.

Testing

  • Failing test first: RedirectCallbackStateTest. Callbacks with a missing, forged or empty state go through Auth.handle and the receiver. Both tests failed on the base branch, because the forged ?error= cancelled the sign-in and the receiver forwarded it. Both pass now.
  • New RedirectCoordinatorTest covers:
    • start A then B
    • mixed kinds replacing each other
    • cancelling the caller
    • a callback after cancellation
    • a wrong-state callback
    • a duplicate callback during completion
    • a duplicate callback after completion
    • completion surviving cancellation of the dispatching caller (Activity recreation)
    • a completion that throws
    • the StateFlow clearing
    • the no-state fallback
    • withState keeping the existing query and fragment
    • receiver delivery while an SSO or hosted-auth flow is pending, and with nothing pending
    • a finished stateless flow not claiming the app's own deep links
  • Added in this round (each fails with its fix reverted):
    • RedirectCoordinatorTest: the app's own myapp://payment?error=declined is NotHandled and leaves a stateful flow pending; it doesn't complete a no-state flow either; a custom-scheme callback carrying the flow state still completes it; every dropped callback is logged with its reason; a background magic-link failure is logged and reported as unsuccessful; a CancellationException from it is rethrown; cancelling the awaiting caller mid-completion cancels the completion job.
    • New RedirectFlowErrorReportingTest: a failed flow started through Clerk.auth.signInWithOAuth emits exactly one AuthEvent.Error. It reports twice without withoutAuthErrorReporting. The hosted-auth case is named for what it pins: a failed redemption is reported once, by startHostedAuth. redeemHostedAuth calls the API directly rather than through reportingFailures, so that test doesn't depend on withoutAuthErrorReporting.
  • Updated:
    • SSOManagerActivityTest: dispatch routing, re-attach after recreation, a real SSO transfer surviving a configuration change and finishing the recreated activity (gated on Clerk.auth.createSignUp via AuthFlowsKt, waiting in real time), dismiss not cancelling an in-flight completion, an ignored callback failing the flow it hosted, and not failing a newer flow.
    • ExternalAccountServiceTest: state check, completion surviving caller cancel, SSO superseding a connection.
    • AuthHandleTest: now uses real Uris, plus the wrong-state and custom-redirect cases.
    • SSOServiceCancellationTest: interruption now fails the flow instead of throwing to the dispatcher. Main's "a failing callback leaves error reporting to the awaiting caller" now goes through RedirectCoordinator.dispatch (fails without the withoutAuthErrorReporting wrap). Main's "cancelling the completing job mid-request" test is dropped: completion intentionally survives the dispatching caller now.
    • HostedAuthServiceTest: a second flow supersedes the first; a caller cancelled during the create request frees the slot.
    • SSOReceiverActivityTest: drop, background magic link and forward deliveries.
    • AuthFacadeUiGapsTest (from main): prepared OAuth / enterprise-SSO redirect URLs carry clerk_redirect_state.
    • ConfigurationManagerAuthRaceTest, SignInPrepareFirstFactorTest, SSOServiceAuthenticateWithRedirectTest, SSOReceiverActivityTest.
  • Ported from test(api): make api and telemetry tests fail when the behaviour they cover breaks #1049 on this rebase (each drives callbacks through the coordinator):
    • SSOServiceTest: takes main's rewritten suite (null strategy, create and prepare failures, nonce completion, callback with nothing pending, sign-up nonce completion, sign-up to sign-in transfer). The sign-up callbacks carry the clerk_redirect_state the flow added to its redirect_url.
    • ExternalAccountServiceTest: missing account, unverified account, a CancellationException from the completion fails the flow as interrupted, and a stale completion doesn't clear a newer connection.
    • SSOServiceCancellationTest: "stale completion that succeeds does not resolve or clear a newer redirect flow" now dispatches through the coordinator. Its transfer returns success after a newer flow has started. It fails if RedirectCoordinator.finish stops checking that the flow is still current. The ExternalAccountServiceTest stale case fails the same way.
    • AuthHandleTest: a hosted-auth callback on a clerk scheme completes hosted auth and doesn't fall back to SSO.
    • SSOManagerActivityTest: a dispatch failure finishes with RESULT_CANCELED and never escapes as an uncaught exception.
    • Not ported, because the coordinator deliberately changes the behavior they pinned: test(api): make api and telemetry tests fail when the behaviour they cover breaks #1049's "cancelling external connection completion propagates and fails pending connection". Completion now keeps running when the dispatching caller is cancelled, which "completion keeps running when the dispatching caller is cancelled" covers.
  • detekt-baseline.xml: the InjectDispatcher entry for HostedAuthService moves to RedirectCoordinator, which now owns the process-wide completion scope.
  • Commands:
    • ./gradlew spotlessApply spotlessCheck detekt :source:api:detektDebug :source:ui:detektDebug :source:telemetry:detektDebug :source:api:lint :source:ui:lint apiCheck: pass, with no ABI dump change
    • :source:api:testDebugUnitTest and :source:ui:testDebugUnitTest: pass. No UI source changes, so Paparazzi was not re-recorded.
  • Not done: no end-to-end run against a live instance that confirms FAPI echoes clerk_redirect_state, including on transfer and error redirects. The claim rests on the clerk_go source above. Needs one manual Google sign-in (plus a transfer and a cancelled/error case) on a production instance before merge.

📝 Walkthrough

The SDK adds shared redirect state and flow coordination for OAuth, SSO, hosted-auth, external-account, and magic-link callbacks. Authentication services, callback activities, reset handling, and configuration refresh now use the coordinator.

Clerk.updateClient wrote non-volatile fields with no lock from OkHttp, IO and
main threads, the last write won regardless of fetch order, and every write
synchronously re-encrypted the whole offline cache on the calling thread.

ClientStateStore is now the only writer of client, session, user and
environment state. Writes are serialized under one lock and every commit bumps
a revision. Responses the network layer applies are ordered by their Date
header and then by arrival, so two responses from the same server second that
are applied out of order cannot overwrite each other. A client fetched and
applied by its caller (refresh, Clerk.refreshClient, session mutations,
sign-out cleanup, hosted-auth signed-out retry, magic link, Organization.reload)
captures the revision before the request and is applied through
updateClientIfUnchangedSince, so it is dropped if anything was committed while
it was in flight, including local mutations such as sign-out or removing a
session. This is the same guard as #1020, implemented inside the store.

Local read-modify-write (session removal, setActive, credential cleanup) goes
through an atomic mutateClient. The offline cache is persisted off the hot
path, coalesced, flushed synchronously when a commit ends the session (judged
from the previously committed client, not the session flow) and cleared on
reset. Clerk keeps every public member as a read-only view.
… restore-if-unset

- User.reload applies through the revision guard and still returns the fetched user
- Organization.reload returns the organization from the fetched client
- refreshClient returns the client Clerk holds when a newer update kept the fetch from applying
- caller-applied GET /client bodies advance the response-order watermark, so an older
piggybacked response arriving afterwards is dropped
- add replaceClientIfUnset / applyEnvironmentIfUnset for cache restore
- remove comments that explain our own code
…server date for awaited fetches

- replaceClientIfUnset no longer bumps the revision, so a fetch that started before an async
cache restore still applies its fresher network client
- applyClientIfUnchangedSince records the response's server Date as serverFetchAtMillis when the
caller passes its ResponseOrder, instead of the device clock
- NativeMagicLinkServiceTest and RestoreCredentialsTest assert on the committed Clerk.client
instead of verifying updateClient, and the failing-cleanup test now makes mutateClient throw
and checks the cleanup failure is attached to the rethrown cancellation

SSO, external-account and hosted-auth flows now share one pending slot behind
one lock, one completion scope and one callback dispatcher. Starting a flow
cancels the previous one, caller cancellation frees the slot, completion runs
once in a process-wide scope, and SSOManagerActivity and Auth.handle route
callbacks the same way.

OAuth and external-account redirect URLs now carry a per-flow state that the
callback must echo back, so another app can no longer end an in-flight sign-in
by firing a forged callback at the exported SSOReceiverActivity.

ConfigurationManager waits on the coordinator's StateFlow instead of polling
three services every 100 ms.
…ect flows

- SSOReceiverActivity asks RedirectCoordinator.receiverDelivery how to deliver
a callback. While a flow is pending only that flow's accepted callback starts
the singleTask SSOManagerActivity (which clears the Custom Tab above it); a
magic link completes in the coordinator's scope without UI, and anything else
  is dropped.
- SSOManagerActivity fails the flow it hosted when it finishes after a callback
that did not complete it, instead of leaving the caller waiting on a flow
whose browser session is gone. A newer flow is left alone.
- HostedAuthService frees the slot if the caller is cancelled (or the create
request throws) before the browser launches, so hasPendingRedirect does not
stay true and delay foreground refreshes.
- A finished flow only joins repeat callbacks for 60 seconds and only when it
had a state, so Auth.handle stops claiming the app's own deep links after a
  stateless flow.
- AuthFacadeUiGapsTest expects the per-flow state on prepared redirect URLs.
- Sso and external-account flows only match clerk-scheme callbacks or ones carrying
clerk_redirect_state, so myapp://payment?error=declined is NotHandled while a flow is pending
- log every dropped callback at warn with its reason
- background magic-link completion logs failures and rethrows CancellationException
- hosted auth completion takes the callback the coordinator already validated
- delete production helpers only tests used; tests go through RedirectCoordinator
- tests: one AuthEvent.Error per failed OAuth / hosted-auth flow, caller cancellation
  cancels the running completion
- remove comments that explain our own code
- SSOServiceTest takes main's rewritten tests and drives callbacks through
RedirectCoordinator.dispatch, with the redirect state the flow added to its redirect_url
- ExternalAccountServiceTest gains main's missing-account, unverified-account, interrupted
  completion and stale-completion cases
- SSOServiceCancellationTest's stale-success case dispatches through the coordinator and fails
if finish stops checking the flow is still current
- AuthHandleTest covers a hosted auth callback on a Clerk scheme not falling back to SSO
- SSOManagerActivityTest checks a dispatch failure never escapes as an uncaught exception
- rename the hosted-auth error reporting test to what it pins
- move the InjectDispatcher baseline entry from HostedAuthService to RedirectCoordinator

Review notes:

  1. Rebase can undo fix(api): stop ClerkResult functions from throwing #1031. Conflicts with main in Clerk.kt, ConfigurationManager.kt, ExternalAccountService.kt, SSOService.kt, PasskeyAuthenticationServiceTest.kt, ClientStateStore.kt. Main now returns a ClerkResult failure when the external URL is missing; this branch still throws via requireNotNull at SSOService.kt:99, :156 and ExternalAccountService.kt:36. Keep main's side there.
  2. Retrying a prepared redirect drops the state check. RedirectState.take() (RedirectState.kt:47, from SSOService.kt:186) removes the state on first use. A second authenticateWithPreparedRedirect() on the same SignIn gets expectedState = null and falls back to accepting any clerk-scheme callback (RedirectCoordinator.kt:231), so a forged ?error=x from another app can cancel the flow again. MAX_PREPARED = 4 eviction degrades the same way. Look it up without removing it and clear when the flow finishes; add tests for both.
  3. Overlap with fix(sso): transfer to sign-up on a bare OAuth callback #1078, which rewrites completeAuthenticateWithRedirect (replaced here by completeRedirect). fix(sso): transfer to sign-up on a bare OAuth callback #1078's bare callback had no query params; if FAPI's transfer redirect drops the redirect_url query, the STATE_MISSING path here rejects it and new-user OAuth breaks. Needs the production check of clerk_redirect_state on transfer/error redirects, plus a device test with a fresh Google account for whichever lands second.
  4. Nit: the // comment at SSOManagerActivity.kt:111-112 explains our own code (AGENTS.md); a helper like failHostedFlowIfUnfinished would do.
  5. Nit: state compared with == (RedirectCoordinator.kt:231); MessageDigest.isEqual is cheap for consistency.

RedirectState.take so it fails closed when expectedState is null: return an
unknown failure before creating PendingRedirect.Sso, rather than allowing an
unverifiable callback. Keep the existing warning and avoid changing retry or
eviction behavior.

Comment thread source/api/src/main/kotlin/com/clerk/api/sso/SSOService.kt Outdated
Look up a prepared redirect's state without removing it, so retrying
SignIn.authenticateWithPreparedRedirect on the same prepared sign-in still
checks the callback's state. The state is forgotten once the flow succeeds.

A prepared redirect with no remembered state (evicted, or prepared before
the process restarted) now fails with redirect_not_prepared before launching
the browser, instead of starting a flow that accepts any clerk-scheme
callback. Callback state is compared with MessageDigest.isEqual.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Do not cancel a redirect for an unrelated magic-link callback.

If the receiver forwards a magic link with no pending redirect and a redirect starts before this activity dispatches the link, flowThisActivityHosted captures the new redirect. Magic-link completion does not complete that redirect, so this cleanup cancels a valid sign-in. Skip pending-flow cleanup when the dispatched callback is a native magic link.
