What / Why

Second round of dependency swaps in the webview. Two rows shipped, two rows were falsified during premise re-verification and are recorded rather than forced.

Row Verdict Result
date-fns → Intl premise held, named replacement was wrong shipped
react-icons 3 brand icons → inline SVG premise held shipped
debounce vs react-use unification falsified not shipped
zod / lucide-react range drift falsified report-only

Net: −107 MB installed (date-fns 20,621 KB + react-icons 86,487 KB), −21,425 B entry bundle (−0.346%), 2 dependencies removed with zero remaining importers.

Premise audit (re-verified at 159c42e15 before any edit)

Row Check Verdict
date-fns in McpErrorRow 1 file, 1 line, repo-wide. Declared only in webview-ui/package.json holds
react-icons 3 brand icons 1 file, 1 line, exactly SiDiscord, SiReddit, SiX. Zero importers in src/, packages/, apps/, playwright/ holds
debounce vs react-use debounce 1 importer / 20 KB, leading-edge; react-use 20 importers / 1,405 KB, trailing-only hook falsified
zod / lucide-react drift root override pins zod@4.6.7 globally; lucide-react has a single declaration falsified

The named date-fns replacement could not be used

formatRelative is a calendar formatter, not a duration formatter. Intl.RelativeTimeFormat answers a different question:

Input (vs base) formatRelative (current UI) Intl.RelativeTimeFormat
same day today at 9:00 PM now
5 min ago today at 8:55 PM 5 minutes ago
23 h ago yesterday at 10:00 PM 23 hours ago
2 days ago last Thursday at 9:00 PM 2 days ago
8 days ago 10/23/2026 8 days ago
45 days ago 09/16/2026 last month

Using it would have been a user-visible behaviour change, not a dependency swap. Intl.DateTimeFormat reproduces the calendar phrasing exactly, which is what shipped.

Honest micro-difference disclosures

Row 1 — none. The replacement is output-identical to date-fns for en-US:

  • 19,201 hourly samples spanning ±400 days, in 5 timezones (Asia/Seoul, America/New_York, Europe/London, Australia/Sydney, UTC) → mismatches=0 in every run.
  • ICU narrow-space checked: no U+202F/U+00A0 divergence before AM/PM; both emit U+0020.
  • A 13-case table was run against date-fns first (13 passed), then against the new implementation (19 passed, same 13 expectations unchanged).
  • Locale is fixed to en-US because that is what the old code produced: formatRelative was called without a locale option, so it used date-fns' enUS default regardless of UI language.

Row 2 — none. The serialized SVG is byte-identical to react-icons@5.7.0 output with the same props. Path data copied verbatim from react-icons/si; attribute order mirrors IconBase so the assertion can be exact string equality rather than a subset check. aria-hidden and the sr-only labels are unchanged, and no <title> is emitted, so the icons stay out of the accessibility tree.

Bundle measurement correction. A du -sb comparison of the whole assets/ dir suggested −5.4 MB. That is not a bundle win: a per-file diff shows only index.js and index.js.map differ (771 files both sides), and du block accounting inflates the gap. The honest number is the entry delta, −21,425 B. The source-map drop (19.6 MB → 14.2 MB) is real but is developer-only payload: date-fns' 116 source entries no longer ship in the map.

Why rows 3 and 4 were not shipped

Row 3. The two APIs are not interchangeable, and the "smaller footprint" is the one already in use:

Package Installed Importers Shape
debounce 20 KB 1 plain fn, {immediate:true} leading edge, .clear()
react-use 1,405 KB 20 (12 useEvent) React hook, trailing edge only

A fake-timer probe confirmed the edge difference in both directions. useScrollLifecycle depends on the leading edge (start a smooth scroll immediately, collapse the burst in a 10 ms window), and it calls .clear() from an effect cleanup, so a hook is the wrong shape. react-use cannot be the unified target either (20 importers). Replacing debounce with a local helper is possible but would rewrite a scroll-critical primitive that has no existing test coverage, for 20 KB. Recorded, not taken.

Row 4. Neither drift is real. zod exact (src, packages/types) vs caret (webview-ui, 3 packages) both resolve to 4.6.7 because the root pnpm.overrides pins it globally, so re-spelling produces a lockfile diff with zero resolution change. lucide-react has a single declaration, so there is no second range to align. There is also no documented caret convention: webview-ui has 63 deps and 0 exact pins, src has 4 exact pins that look deliberate (AI SDK/provider coupling), and renovate.json states no range policy.

Test results

Suite Result
Targeted (Announcement + BrandIcons + McpErrorRow) 3 files / 30 tests passed
Full webview 174 files / 2,247 tests passed
Typecheck (tsc --noEmit) exit 0
Lint (eslint --max-warnings=0) exit 0
Prettier clean

Base webview was 2,240 tests; +7 net from the two new spec files.

Pre-existing failure, not from this PR: src/api/providers/__tests__/mistral.spec.ts:932 fails on base 159c42e15 (1 failed / 49 passed), measured in a separate base worktree before these changes. The TimeoutError fix is on #2257 and not yet on main. Excluded from pass criteria on that basis.

Hygiene

  • Lockfile diff is removals only: 20 deleted lines, 0 added, no version resolution changed.
  • Both removed deps verified at zero importers after the source edits and before the manifest edits.
  • No as any, no floating promises, no new suppressions (src/eslint-suppressions.json untouched), LF in all committed blobs, no changeset, no CHANGELOG.
  • @radix-ui/react-icons is a different package with 5 remaining importers and is untouched.

Follow-up (out of scope)

  • debounce → local helper: needs a useScrollLifecycle characterization suite first.
  • zod range normalisation: zero resolution change, and src's exact pins look deliberate. Maintainer call.
  • react-use: bundle already tree-shakes per-symbol, so any win is install-size only.

Full monorepo run

pnpm test at repo root: 551 passed / 1 failed / 3 skipped files; 11,934 passed / 1 failed / 37 skipped tests.

The single failure is the pre-existing mistral.spec.ts TimeoutError case documented above, reproduced identically on base 159c42e15 in a separate worktree (1 failed / 49 passed).

What: McpErrorRow now formats its timestamp with Intl.DateTimeFormat instead
of date-fns formatRelative, and webview-ui no longer depends on date-fns.

Why: date-fns was a 20 MB installed dependency reached by exactly one import
in the webview. The single call did not need the library.

Impact: no user-visible change. formatRelative is a calendar formatter, not an
elapsed-duration one, so Intl.RelativeTimeFormat was NOT a drop-in (it yields
"5 minutes ago" where the UI showed "today at 9:00 PM"). The replacement
reproduces date-fns' en-US calendar phrasing exactly, pinned by a 13-case
characterization table that was run against date-fns first and against the new
implementation second. 19 new tests.
What: Announcement's X, Discord and Reddit marks now come from a local
BrandIcons module. webview-ui no longer depends on react-icons.

Why: react-icons installs 86 MB to serve three icons in one component, and
those three were its only importers in the repo.

Impact: no visual change. The path data is copied verbatim from
react-icons 5.7.0 react-icons/si, and the spec asserts the serialized SVG is
byte-identical to the library's output with the same props, so this is an
equality check rather than a resemblance check. aria-hidden and the
screen-reader-only labels are unchanged. @radix-ui/react-icons is a separate
package with 5 remaining importers and is untouched.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements

    • Relative timestamps use local calendar days: entries show “today,” “yesterday,” or “tomorrow” when applicable; nearby dates use weekday names, and older or farther-future dates use short dates. Relative labels include the time.
    • Announcement social links retain their existing labels, destinations, and appearance.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Error rows display their message, timestamp, and severity-specific colors.

The webview replaces react-icons with shared SVG brand icons and replaces date-fns relative formatting with a local timestamp formatter. Tests cover icon markup, timestamp formatting, and MCP error row rendering.

Changes: Webview dependency replacements

Layer / File(s) Summary
Add and use shared brand icons
webview-ui/package.json, webview-ui/src/components/common/BrandIcons.tsx, webview-ui/src/components/chat/Announcement.tsx, webview-ui/src/components/common/__tests__/BrandIcons.spec.tsx
Adds shared X, Discord, and Reddit SVG components and uses them in the announcement. Tests check serialized markup and selected accessibility and color attributes. The manifest removes react-icons.
Format MCP error timestamps
webview-ui/package.json, webview-ui/src/components/mcp/McpErrorRow.tsx, webview-ui/src/components/mcp/__tests__/McpErrorRow.spec.tsx
Adds formatRelativeTimestamp using local calendar-day comparisons and fixed en-US formatters. McpErrorRow uses the helper. Tests cover past and future date formats, midnight boundaries, invalid dates, and row rendering. The manifest removes date-fns.

Priority: Low

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: removing date-fns and react-icons from the webview bundle. The changeset removes both dependencies from webview-ui/package.json, replaces date-fns formatRelative with an Intl-based helper in McpErrorRow.tsx, and replaces three react-icons brand icons with inline SVG in BrandIcons.tsx. The perf(webview) prefix follows a conventional-commit style. The title is short, specific, and free of file lists or emojis.

Full details: Security Boundaries

Explanation

No changed path meets the security failure condition. Announcement.tsx replaces icon components only; its hardcoded social URLs and openExternal behavior are unchanged. BrandIcons.tsx contains static SVG path data and renders caller-supplied SVG props; it does not execute input or handle secrets or PII. McpErrorRow.tsx converts the typed numeric timestamp to a Date for display and renders the existing error message as React text. The dependency and lockfile edits remove packages only. No changed path leaks secrets or PII, executes unvalidated input, or bypasses an approval or allowlist control.

Full details: Persistence Integrity

Explanation

No changed persistence path exists. The PR removes dependencies, replaces date formatting, adds inline SVG icons, and adds tests. The changed code contains no state persistence, file writes, storage updates, transactions, rollback logic, or persisted defaults. Therefore the stated persistence failure conditions are not introduced.

Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup

Explanation

No changed production path allocates or registers a listener, watcher, provider, timer, task, or subscription. Announcement only swaps rendered icon components, BrandIcons only renders static SVG, and McpErrorRow only creates immutable Intl.DateTimeFormat instances and formats dates. The only changed timer lifecycle is in McpErrorRow.spec.tsx; afterEach calls vi.useRealTimers(), so the test clock is restored.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the repository template and covers the required sections. It links the related work in its objectives and gives a detailed What/Why, premise audit, implementation details for the date and icon replacements, and test results. Gaps against the template: the 'Related GitHub Issue' section has no 'Closes: #' issue link (the PR objectives reference PR #2262 but no approved issue), the 'Test Procedure' is given as results rather than repeatable steps, the Pre-Submission Checklist is not marked, the Visual Snapshots section does not state whether a *.visual.tsx snapshot was added for the Announcement icon change, the Documentation Updates choice is not stated, and the 'Get in Touch' Discord username is missing. The description also uses dense tables and some phrasing that departs from the ASD-STE100 style the template requests.

Resolution

Add a 'Closes: #<issue number>' line under 'Related GitHub Issue' that links an approved issue. Mark the Pre-Submission Checklist items that apply. State whether a *.visual.tsx snapshot was added or why it is not needed for the Announcement icon change. Select one Documentation Updates option. Add the author's Discord username under 'Get in Touch'. Rewrite the Test Procedure as repeatable steps for reviewers. Shorten long tables and sentences to match the ASD-STE100 writing style the template requests.

Full details: Regression Evidence

Explanation

The PR changes durable visible UI: Announcement.tsx replaces the three rendered brand icons, and BrandIcons.tsx adds their SVG rendering. The unit tests verify serialized markup and accessibility properties, but the PR adds no Playwright screenshot test or snapshot. The existing Announcement.links.visual.tsx test checks link messages only and has no toHaveScreenshot assertion. This leaves visual regressions in the changed icon rendering and layout uncovered.

Resolution

Add a Playwright component visual test for the Announcement social-link row or BrandIcons in the rendered webview. Assert the relevant supported theme state with toHaveScreenshot and commit the baseline snapshot(s). Keep the existing unit and interaction tests.

Pad years below 1000 in the short date format.

SHORT_DATE_FORMAT uses year: "numeric", which renders year 99 as 99. The date-fns en-US short date pattern pads the year to four digits, so the former output was 0099. The doc comment says the output matches the former behavior, which is not true for these years.

Assert the X link's icon in the Announcement test.

The Announcement tests find links by accessible name and check only openExternal URLs. The X icon is aria-hidden, so it does not affect the name. A different brand icon in the X link, with the same label and href, would pass the tests. Add an assertion that the link named "X" contains the markup XIcon renders. BrandIcons.spec.tsx already uses renderToStaticMarkup for this, so the same approach can be reused in Announcement.spec.tsx.

## Visual Tests (Playwright Story Gallery)

### When a UI change needs a snapshot

If your PR changes anything a user would notice at a glance — layout, spacing, theme tokens, brand elements, gradients, mask/blur effects, hover/empty/error states — **add a `*.visual.tsx` snapshot to the same PR**. Do not attach screenshots to the PR description as evidence; commit the baseline instead so future PRs get regression coverage automatically.

… clock

What: differenceInCalendarDays now copies each input and zeroes it with
setHours(0,0,0,0) instead of rebuilding it through new Date(year, month, day).
The McpErrorRow spec freezes the system clock and gains two cases: the
year-99/100 boundary and a just-after-midnight render.

Why: two review findings, both real and both reproduced before fixing.

1. new Date(year, month, day) maps years 0-99 onto 1900-1999. A date in year 99
was read as 1999, so the year-99/100 boundary produced a delta of 693,959
days instead of 1 and the output degraded to a short date. Verified: the
pre-fix helper returns "12/31/99" where "yesterday at 12:00 PM" is correct.

2. The component formats against the live new Date() while the fixture was
built from the live Date.now(). In the first five minutes after local
midnight the two land on different calendar days, so the /^today at/
assertion failed. Verified by freezing the clock at 00:02 local: the old
assertion fails, and it now passes deterministically.

Impact: no behaviour change outside those two cases. Re-ran the exhaustive
equivalence sweep against date-fns formatRelative: 19,201 hourly samples across
5 timezones, mismatches=0, same as before the fix. Full webview suite 174 files
/ 2,249 tests passed.

The merge base used date-fns@4.4.0 directly. Its calendar-day calculation normalizes timezone offsets, so Pacific/Apia December 29, 2011, versus December 31, 2011, is two calendar days apart. The replacement's direct local-midnight subtraction returns -1, which renders yesterday instead of the two-day phrase.

Use offset-normalized calendar arithmetic and add a regression test for this skipped local date.

Update the calendar-day calculation in McpErrorRow to use offset-normalized
calendar arithmetic so skipped local dates, such as Pacific/Apia’s December 29
and 31, 2011, are treated as two days apart rather than yesterday. Add a
regression test for this case.

## Unit & State Tests (Vitest + JSDOM)

- When a regression can be proven with a component or webview integration test, keep it in `webview-ui`. Do not promote it to e2e just because the UI is hosted inside VS Code.
