perf(webview): replace the debounce package with a local leading-edge helper - #2268
Replaces the debounce npm package with a local leading-edge helper in webview-ui, dropping the dependency.
debounce@2.2.0 was declared in webview-ui/package.json and imported by exactly one file: useScrollLifecycle.ts, as debounce(fn, 10, { immediate: true }). That is a 10 ms leading-edge window plus a .clear() in effect cleanup. Nothing else used the package.
Why not unify with react-use
The original diet-wave row asked to unify debounce with react-use. That direction is impossible: react-use's useDebounce is a trailing-only hook, and useScrollLifecycle needs the leading edge so a smooth scroll starts immediately when a row grows. It also cannot be called where it is needed, because scrollToBottomSmooth is created in useMemo and .clear()ed in an effect cleanup. So the dependency is dropped rather than unified.
Behaviour preservation
The swap is backed by a characterization suite that was written against the real package first:
Phase 1 - leadingEdgeDebounce.ts was a one-line seam delegating to debounce(fn, wait, { immediate: true }). Both spec files ran against it: 17 tests passed.
Phase 2 - the seam was replaced with the local implementation. The same two spec files, byte-identical (sha256 unchanged, mtimes predate the implementation swap), ran again: 17 tests passed.
What is pinned, via fake timers:
the call fires on the leading edge, synchronously
a burst inside the window collapses to one invocation
nothing ever fires on the trailing edge
a call inside the window suppresses and extends the window
the window reopens once wait ms have elapsed since the last call (observable behaviour of the re-armed timer; both the package and the helper re-arm on each call)
.clear() cancels the pending timer and reopens the window
.clear() is a no-op when nothing is pending
arguments and the return value come from the leading call
at the hook level: a taller row scrolls smoothly once, a burst collapses, a shorter row uses behavior: "auto" and bypasses the debounce, unmount clears the pending window (timer count 0), and no smooth scroll is issued while browsing history
One assertion I got wrong initially was corrected against the package, not against my helper: with immediate: true, a call inside the window does not fire, and the window keeps extending while calls arrive faster than wait. The test now encodes the package's real behaviour.
pnpm-lock.yaml: 9 deletions, 0 additions - the importer entry, the packages: resolution, and the snapshots: entry. No other resolution changed.
After pnpm install, node_modules/.pnpm/debounce@2.2.0 is gone and pnpm why debounce resolves nothing.
grep for from "debounce" across webview-ui/src, src, packages, apps returns 0 importers.
src/ uses lodash.debounce (4 importers, extension host, needs maxWait/flush). That is a different package and is out of scope.

This is a dependency-count and supply-chain win more than a size win, and the PR says so rather than dressing up the number.

… helper
What: add `webview-ui/src/utils/leadingEdgeDebounce.ts`, a 200-byte helper that
runs its callback on the leading edge and ignores calls until `wait` ms have
passed since the most recent one, plus a `.clear()` that cancels the pending
window. `useScrollLifecycle`'s `scrollToBottomSmooth` now uses it instead of
`debounce(fn, 10, { immediate: true })`. The `debounce` dependency is removed
from `webview-ui/package.json` and the lockfile.
Why: `debounce@2.2.0` was a 7 KB package pulled in for a single 10 ms
leading-edge window. `react-use`'s `useDebounce` is trailing-only and cannot
express it, so the dependency could not be unified away in that direction. A
local helper carries the whole used surface (leading call + `.clear()`) in 200
bytes of output.
Impact: entry bundle 6,187,772 B -> 6,187,049 B (-723 B). The bundled
`debounce` module (900 B) is replaced by the helper (200 B); the rest of the
delta is module-wrapper overhead. Behaviour is pinned by a characterization
suite that passed unchanged against both implementations.
The characterization suite was written and run against the real package first
(17 tests green through a seam delegating to `debounce`), then the seam was
replaced by the local helper and the same 17 tests passed without edits.

📝 Summary
Summary by CodeRabbit
Maintenance
Removed a dependency while preserving the existing scroll behavior.
Tests
Added coverage for scroll timing, including repeated updates, shorter rows, history browsing, and cleanup when the view is closed. These checks help ensure smooth scrolling remains predictable.
The webview replaces the debounce package with a local leadingEdgeDebounce utility. The utility invokes on the leading edge, resets a 10 ms suppression window, and exposes clear(). Tests cover utility timing and scroll lifecycle behavior.
Changes: Leading-edge scroll debounce
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Define and test leading-edge debounce webview-ui/src/utils/leadingEdgeDebounce.ts, webview-ui/src/utils/__tests__/leadingEdgeDebounce.spec.ts
Adds the leadingEdgeDebounce utility and its callable type. Tests cover invocation timing, window resets, clear(), argument forwarding, and return values.
Use the utility for smooth scrolling webview-ui/src/hooks/useScrollLifecycle.ts, webview-ui/src/hooks/__tests__/useScrollLifecycle.debounce.spec.ts, webview-ui/package.json
useScrollLifecycle uses the utility with the existing 10 ms interval and scroll command. Tests cover scroll timing, row-size behavior, history browsing, and unmount cleanup. The manifest removes debounce.
The debounce replacement has no established merge-blocking regression in the supplied evidence and is mergeable subject to normal checks.

Explanation
The title states the main change: the debounce npm package is replaced by a local leading-edge helper. The changeset matches this. It removes the dependency from package.json, adds leadingEdgeDebounce.ts, and switches useScrollLifecycle.ts to the helper. The title uses the conventional perf(webview) prefix and stays under 80 characters.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template and covers the required parts. It links the work to the issue context and explains the implementation, the reasons for the change, and the verification steps. It also covers the test procedure, the dependency removal, the bundle impact, and the out-of-scope items. The Closes line is missing its issue number. The description also omits the template's Visual Snapshots, Videos, Documentation Updates, and Get in Touch sections, and does not mark the Pre-Submission Checklist. The description is mostly complete, so this check passes. The missing items are listed below for the author to fix.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
No changed path meets the security failure conditions. webview-ui/src/utils/leadingEdgeDebounce.ts invokes only the callback supplied by the local hook and schedules a fixed timer; it does not evaluate external code or process unvalidated input. useScrollLifecycle.ts supplies a fixed scrollToIndex callback and receives only the existing boolean row-height signal. The dependency and lockfile changes remove debounce; the added tests contain no secrets, PII handling, approval bypass, or allowlist bypass.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
No changed persistence path exists. The PR removes the debounce dependency, adds an in-memory leadingEdgeDebounce timer, and updates useScrollLifecycle to clear that timer on unmount. The diff contains no persistence writes, storage/database operations, rollback paths, or persisted defaults. Therefore, the stated persistence failure conditions are not introduced.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
No changed lifecycle resource leak or duplicate work is present. leadingEdgeDebounce creates one timeout per active window, clears the previous timeout before rearming, and exposes clear() that cancels the pending timeout. useScrollLifecycle calls scrollToBottomSmooth.clear() in its cleanup effect at useScrollLifecycle.ts:220-228. The changed tests also verify zero timers immediately after unmount and no later smooth scroll. Suppressed calls do not invoke the scroll function, and no trailing callback exists.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
The helper changes an observable return behavior without focused coverage. The previous debounce(..., { immediate: true }) returns the leading result again for suppressed calls (node_modules/.pnpm/debounce@2.2.0/node_modules/debounce/index.js:55-66), while leadingEdgeDebounce returns undefined on suppressed calls (webview-ui/src/utils/leadingEdgeDebounce.ts:26-35). The new unit tests cover only the leading return value (leadingEdgeDebounce.spec.ts:133-137) and do not assert a suppressed call's return value. The PR claims behavior characterization, so this changed contract needs an explicit test or an intentional compatibility decision.
Resolution
Add a focused unit test that uses a non-void function, makes a leading call, then makes a call inside the active window and asserts the suppressed return value. If undefined is intentional, document and approve that contract change; otherwise preserve the prior result semantics.

Assert the suppressed-call return value.
The return-value test checks only the leading call. leadingEdgeDebounce returns undefined for suppressed calls, but no test asserts that. A change to that return path would leave the suite passing. Add an assertion for a suppressed call.

leadingEdgeDebounce returns undefined for calls inside the wait window. The exported type LeadingEdgeDebounced<F> still gives those calls F's return type. Callers that assume a non-undefined return type can receive undefined at runtime.

What: move the vi.getTimerCount() check to directly after unmount() in the
debounce unmount test, and document on LeadingEdgeDebounced<F> that suppressed
trailing calls return undefined.
Why: expired timers stop counting, so the old trailing assertion passed even
with scrollToBottomSmooth.clear() removed from the unmount cleanup; the type
also swallowed ReturnType<F> to undefined without saying so.
Impact: the unmount cleanup is now pinned, and the helper's return contract is
stated where callers read it.
Independent perf measurement (wave-4 verification build): rebuilt the webview at the debounce-removal commit's parent and at this PR head. The entry-chunk delta reproduces byte-exactly: -723 B (-0.0117%), with the baseline entry size (6,187,772 B) also matching exactly, so the dependency-drop value is confirmed with measurement. One honest correction for the record: the PR body's .map delta claim (-2,754 B) does not reproduce - measured -1,686 B, an unexplained 1,068 B residual isolated to the removal commit itself under deterministic (sha256-repeated) builds. .map files are dev-time artifacts and not part of the shipped runtime payload, so this does not affect the entry-size conclusion.
