fix(ui): make UI language change consistent (#2185) - #2194
Before this PR, the webview had three ways to get translations: useAppTranslation, useTranslation, and a direct import of import {t} from "i18next". Some of them did not follow a language change, so text could keep the previous language. This PR fixes the UI language change problem and makes the webview use one approach with react-i18next. Then it removes the custom translation layer.
The PR makes four changes:
Load translations at startup.setup.ts calls loadTranslations() when the module loads. Before, a mount effect in TranslationProvider loaded them, so the first render could show raw keys.
Apply the language directly. The new helper applyLanguage() (webview-ui/src/i18n/language.ts) changes the i18next language. It does nothing if the language is already active. The "state" message handler in ExtensionStateContext calls it before the state is rendered. Thus components show the correct language from their first render.
Use common rules for react-i18next. These rules prevent stale cached output:
Get t and i18n from useTranslation. Do not import t from i18next and do not call i18next.t.
Pass t to each <Trans> (<Trans t={t} ... />).
Pass t as an argument to helpers. formatLargeNumber, formatTimeAgo, and validateApiConfiguration now take t.
New ESLint rules in webview-ui/eslint.config.mjs enforce these rules. The translation guides (.roo/rules-translate/001-general-rules.md and .roo/skills/roo-translation/SKILL.md) describe them.
Use one hook. All components use useTranslation from react-i18next. useAppTranslation is no longer used.
These changes make the translation harness simpler:
TranslationContext, its mock, and its test are deleted.
The Playwright TranslationContext stub and its Vite alias are deleted.
The visual fixtures use the new createFixtureI18n() helper with I18nextProvider.
Test mocks only mock react-i18next.
For reviewers, please check these items with care:
The applyLanguage() call in the "state" handler of ExtensionStateContext.tsx. This is now the only place where the language changes.
The new t argument in utils/format.ts and utils/validate.ts.
Most of the diff is a mechanical change from useAppTranslation to useTranslation, import { t } from "react-i18next" and direct usage of t to const { t } = useTranslation(), adding t property to every <Trans> component.
Test Procedure
New unit tests:
webview-ui/src/i18n/__tests__/languageSwitch.spec.tsx: It changes the language from en to es without a remount. Plain useTranslation, namespaced useTranslation, and Trans consumers all show the new language. The test consumers cache output on t, as React Compiler does. The test also checks that t is stable while the language does not change. It also checks that a namespaced t accepts fully qualified keys.
webview-ui/src/i18n/__tests__/hydrationLanguage.spec.tsx: Under StrictMode, components that hydration mounts show the hydrated language. It also tests applyLanguage(). The helper changes to a different language. It does not emit languageChanged again for the active language or for a missing language.
format.spec.ts and validate.spec.ts now pass t to the helpers.
To run the tests:
cd webview-ui
npx vitest run src/i18n src/utils
npx vitest run
pnpm lint
Manual test:
Build and start the extension. Open the Zoo Code panel.
If your language is not English by default, make sure that all visible text is language-consistent.
Open Settings and change the language (for example, from English to Español). Click Save.
Make sure that all visible text changes at the same time. Check the chat view, the task header, the Welcome page, and the Settings view. Do not reload the webview.
Close and open the extension again. Make sure that the first render shows the saved language and no raw translation keys.

## Unit & State Tests (Vitest + JSDOM)
- Use `@/utils/test-utils` `renderWithExtensionState` and `makeExtensionState` for common context/query setup. Keep component-specific mocks and state transitions local when they explain the scenario.
Language changes now update translated text throughout the interface, including open chat approval prompts.
Validation messages, large-number formatting, and time-ago labels use the active language.
Translated content is available from the initial render, helping prevent untranslated text during language changes.
Developer Experience
Added checks to catch common localization mistakes and updated translation guidance.
Localization tests now cover language switching and translation behavior across the interface.
The WebView now uses react-i18next instead of a custom translation context. It applies language changes from extension state, passes t to formatting and validation helpers, and updates components, tests, and visual fixtures to use the new translation setup.
Changes: WebView translation migration

The app initializes i18next at module load and applies the language from incoming extension state. The custom translation contexts and providers are removed. Guidance and ESLint rules describe and enforce react-i18next usage.
Formatting and validation functions now accept a translation function. Callers pass t; existing formatting thresholds and validation conditions remain unchanged.
Components replace useAppTranslation or global translation imports with useTranslation. Affected Trans elements receive t explicitly. Chat approval buttons store translation keys and derive labels from t.
Settings and provider translation access webview-ui/src/components/settings/*, webview-ui/src/components/settings/providers/*
Settings screens and provider forms use useTranslation. Validation calls pass t, and affected Trans elements receive it explicitly.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "fix(ui): make UI language change consistent (#2185)" matches the main change: the webview moves to a single react-i18next approach so UI text follows a language change. It follows the conventional-commit style and is short and specific. It is not vague and it does not describe unrelated work. The reference to #2185 is an issue number, not a description, so the title is still clear without it.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description links issue #2185 and follows the template sections (Related Issue, Description, Test Procedure, Pre-Submission Checklist, Videos, Documentation Updates, Additional Notes, Get in Touch). It explains the problem, the four changes, the new tests, and manual test steps. The Visual Snapshots section is absent, though the checklist marks the visual snapshot item as done and the author says screenshot tests were fixed. The test results for vitest and lint are not reported. The template's Simplified Technical English guidance is only partly followed, since several sentences are long and the description uses some contractions-free but complex sentences. These gaps are minor.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
For [#2185], the PR applies the hydrated language in the "state" handler before state rendering and loads locale resources during i18n setup. Webview consumers use useTranslation, pass t to Trans and translation helpers, and derive approval labels from keys. The language-switch, hydration, helper, and ChatView tests cover switching without remounting and first-render consistency.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
No changed path matches the security failure conditions. The PR changes translation hooks, i18next initialization, test providers, and translation helper parameters. ExtensionStateContext.tsx passes newState.language only to applyLanguage() and i18next.changeLanguage(); it does not execute input or authorize an operation. validate.ts still enforces provider and model organization allowlists, and ApiOptions.tsx passes organizationAllowList through the new t parameter position. ChatView.tsx changes approval labels from translated text to translation keys, while its existing askResponse approval actions remain intact. No changed code leaks secrets or PII.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
No changed persistence path meets the failure condition. The changed LanguageSettings path still sends updateSettings; the host handler persists each setting with awaited provider.contextProxy.setValue(...) and then awaits postStateToWebview() (webview-ui/src/components/settings/LanguageSettings.tsx; src/core/webview/webviewMessageHandler.ts:760-873). The added void instance.changeLanguage(...) only updates in-memory i18next state. It does not write persisted state. The unawaited language switch can affect rendering timing, but it is not a persistence-integrity failure.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
No changed lifecycle path introduces a resource leak or post-disposal duplicate work. applyLanguage() only calls changeLanguage() from the existing state-message handler. The existing window message listener still removes itself in the effect cleanup at ExtensionStateContext.tsx:517-522. Eager loadTranslations() only registers bundled resources. The added test listener also calls off() after use.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The translation-provider removal, i18next fixture and mock updates, ESLint rules, guides, helper changes, and tests support [#2185]. The pull request also retains the screenshot-baseline refresh identified in commit b1bf9878a52a1229d4140d4ef40522dec3096d74, titled test(webview): refresh baselines added before #2163 landed. That change is unrelated to language switching. The affected PNG files are excluded from review, so their exact contents are not independently verifiable.
Resolution
Remove the unrelated screenshot-baseline refresh from this pull request, or move it to a separate pull request focused on the baseline correction.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
The standing regression remains unresolved. CommandExecution.tsx:201 changed the exited-status tooltip from t("chat.commandExecution.exitStatus", { exitStatus: ... }) to t("chat:commandExecution.exitStatus", { exitCode: ... }); the English resource uses {{exitCode}} at webview-ui/src/i18n/locales/en/chat.json:285. This changed key and interpolation are not asserted by a focused test. CommandExecution.spec.tsx only adds TooltipProvider; its exited-status cases use exitCode: 0 and assert only the pulsing dot or cache behavior. No test asserts the tooltip text or a non-zero interpolation value.
Resolution
Add a focused test in webview-ui/src/components/chat/__tests__/CommandExecution.spec.tsx for an exited command with a non-zero code such as exitCode: 2. Trigger the status tooltip and assert the localized text is Exited with status 2 (or the equivalent English locale text).
