feat(usage): add a Usage tab with provider limits and usage history - #2225
This PR adds a Usage tab to Settings. It shows live provider limits and a usage history.
Provider limits
Two host services supply the limits: copilotQuota and providerQuotas. They cover GitHub Copilot, OpenRouter, DeepSeek, Moonshot, Kimi Code, z.ai, MiniMax, NanoGPT, and OpenCode Go.
The payload parsers are pure functions with unit tests.
A key goes only to the default host of its own provider. A profile with a custom base URL shows "not checked". A profile on the default host is preferred over a gateway profile.
Only successful results are cached (60 seconds), per provider and per key. A failed refresh removes the old entry. Callers that ask for the same key share one request.
The webview sends a request id and cancels on unmount. The host aborts the fetches when the last waiting caller leaves, and the webview ignores an answer for an older request.
Copilot uses the GitHub session that VS Code already holds. It never prompts. Unknown usage shows "Usage not reported", not "0% used".
Keys stay in the extension host. The webview gets display-ready rows only.
Usage history
The history comes from local task history. The host records per-model usage (usageByModel) in task metadata, so a later change of the active profile does not relabel old requests.
Filters: Today, 7 days, 30 days, All time, and a workspace filter. A daily chart, breakdowns by provider, model, and mode, and CSV export.
Unpriced providers show tokens and "no price", not $0.00.
The chart steps by calendar day, so it is correct across a daylight-saving change. The view and the export share one "now" that rolls over at local midnight.
CSV cells that start with =, +, -, @, tab, or carriage return get a leading apostrophe.
Review notes
The Copilot quota endpoint (copilot_internal/user) is not a public API. A failure shows a quiet status row.
This PR adds no setting, so it does not touch updateSettings.
Mutation gate:mutation-diff reports 654 changed executable lines in the extension and 749 in the webview (limit 500). Most of it is providerQuotas.ts (467), UsageSettings.tsx (394), and usage.ts (181). The parsers and the view model are pure code with their own tests. I ask a maintainer for a one-time exclusion for this PR.
Test Procedure
pnpm check-types passes in webview-ui, src, and packages/types.
Webview tests pass (178 files, 2283 tests). Extension tests for the language models, the webview handler, and task persistence pass (53 files, 1097 tests).
Playwright snapshots cover the populated, degraded, and empty states in four themes.
The DST tests run in America/New_York and assert that the fixture crosses a clock change.
Manual: open Settings > Usage. Check each state. Click Refresh. Close the tab while a request runs. Export a CSV and open it in a spreadsheet.
Auto reviews are limited based on label configuration.

127-127: Cached Copilot quota is still served without checking the current GitHub session.
Line 127 returns the cached success before getGitHubToken runs. If the user signs out or switches GitHub accounts within CACHE_TTL_MS, a normal call returns the previous account's quota. The existing review thread on this topic has no reply on this path. It asked for either token-aware caching or session-change invalidation, plus a regression test.
Added a Usage section in Settings with cost and token summaries, daily charts, task and provider/model breakdowns, and date-range and workspace filters.
Export usage history to CSV using the selected filters.
View quota and balance information for supported providers, including usage windows and reset dates where available, and refresh it on demand.
Usage history shows request totals grouped by provider and model when available; token totals are shown when costs are unavailable.
Quota views show loading failures and allow you to retry.
Localization
Added Usage settings translations across supported languages.
This pull request adds per-provider/model usage tracking, provider quota retrieval, and a Usage section in Settings. The section combines quota status with local task history, filters, summaries, charts, and CSV export. It also adds translations and tests for quota handling, usage calculations, and display states.
Changes: Usage and Provider Quotas
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Record per-model task usage packages/types/src/history.ts, packages/types/src/vscode-extension-host.ts, src/core/task/Task.ts, src/core/task-persistence/*
Request metadata records provider and model identifiers. Task history stores aggregated request, token, cache, and cost values by provider and model.
Quota contracts and retrieval packages/types/src/providers/vscode-llm.ts, src/services/language-models/*
Quota types, parsing utilities, Copilot retrieval, and keyed-provider retrieval are added. Results support provider-specific parsing, host validation, caching, request sharing, and cancellation.
The webview can request or cancel quota retrieval. The extension host loads profiles, passes credentials only to the quota service, and returns active request results.
Usage aggregation and Settings UI webview-ui/src/utils/*, webview-ui/src/components/settings/*, webview-ui/src/i18n/locales/*, webview-ui/playwright/gallery/stories.tsx
Settings adds usage filters, cost/token summaries, provider/model/mode breakdowns, charts, provider limits, task details, and CSV export. Locale strings, stories, and tests cover populated, degraded, empty, and date-boundary states.
Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code#2216: It changes the same usage-history, quota-service, message, and Settings UI flow.
Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code#2223: UsageSettings uses the shared time and number formatting helpers changed by this PR.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review f19d0
After switching or signing out of GitHub, Usage may show the previous account’s quota for up to 60 seconds. A forced refresh bypasses the stale result, so this is a bounded merge risk.

Explanation
The description is complete and directly covers the linked issue, implementation details, testing, visual snapshots, documentation impact, and checklist status. It omits some optional template sections, but the required information is present.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #2215 is open and directly linked, so its coding requirements apply. Changes at the reviewed head implement them:
Usage settings tab: SettingsView.tsx adds the usage section, rendered by UsageSettings.tsx.
Provider limits: providerQuotas.ts covers OpenRouter, DeepSeek, Moonshot, Kimi Code, z.ai, MiniMax, NanoGPT, and OpenCode Go. Parser tests are in providerQuotas.spec.ts.
Copilot quota: copilotQuota.ts reads the existing VS Code GitHub session silently (getGitHubCopilotQuota). It returns signedOut or noCopilot without prompting. The parser tests are in copilotQuota.spec.ts.
Custom base URL: the host sends no request for custom-host profiles. The UI shows the "not checked" status (PR screenshot and ProviderLimits.tsx).
Key handling: webviewMessageHandler.providerQuotas.spec.ts checks that API keys stay out of webview messages. The webview receives display-ready rows only.
Cancellation and caching: the quota services cache successful results for 60 seconds. Failed refreshes clear older entries. Shared requests abort when the last waiter leaves. ProviderLimits.tsx cancels on refresh and unmount.
Usage history: summarizeUsageByModel and taskMetadata.ts record per-model usage in usageByModel. usage.ts aggregates it with range and workspace filters, charts, and provider, model, and mode breakdowns.
Unpriced usage: usage.ts and UsageSettings show tokens for unpriced buckets. Tests cover this.
CSV export: usageToCsv applies the same filters. Formula-leading cells are neutralized, and tests cover it.
Localization: all 15 locale settings.json files add the usage group.
No unmet coding requirement appears in the summary evidence. I did not read the raw locale text or the quota source directly, so exact string wording (for example, "Custom base URL, not checked") relies on the PR screenshot description and the summary.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
Each changed area supports the Usage tab or its history for #2215:
Types: history.ts, vscode-llm.ts, and vscode-extension-host.ts add the quota message types and the usageByModel and apiProvider/modelId fields that the feature reads.
Task persistence: Task.ts, taskMetadata.ts, usageByModel.ts, and TaskHistoryStore tests record and clear per-model usage. These keep history attribution correct after a profile change.
Quota services and handler: copilotQuota.ts, providerQuotas.ts, quotaUtils.ts, and webviewMessageHandler.ts provide the quota data and request lifecycle.
Webview: ProviderLimits.tsx, UsageSettings.tsx, usage.ts, and providerLabel.ts render the UI and history. providerLabel.ts maps provider IDs to display names used by the feature.
Tests and stories: the spec files and visual stories cover the feature.
Locales: all settings.json changes add the usage strings and the section label.
The PR asks for a mutation-gate exclusion. That request is administrative. It is not a code change and was not assessed here. No unrelated product behavior appears in the summary.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
Focused regression coverage is present for the changed behavior. The prior schema gap is fixed by packages/types/src/__tests__/history.test.ts, which verifies complete usageByModel parsing and the absent-field case. The new quota parsers, caching, retry, credential isolation, errors, and cancellation have dedicated service tests; webview request lifecycle has dedicated handler tests; usage aggregation, DST boundaries, CSV safety, and UI branches have focused tests. The durable Usage UI also has Playwright component screenshots for populated, degraded, empty, and four themes. Prior failure addressed: The changed history.test.ts now parses a complete usageByModel entry, preserves all fields, accepts optional fields, and verifies absence of the optional breakdown.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
No concrete security-boundary failure was introduced. Provider API keys remain host-side in loadProfiles and only formatted quota rows are posted by webviewMessageHandler. Keyed-provider requests use fixed provider-owned URLs, reject custom origins, and send keys only in Authorization headers. Copilot uses silent VS Code authentication and a fixed GitHub URL. Error messages are sanitized before UI/log output. User-controlled history fields are rendered as React text and CSV fields are escaped against formula execution.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
No changed persistence integrity failure found. Task.saveClineMessages awaits saveTaskMessages and updateTaskHistory (src/core/task/Task.ts:1776-1818). The task-history write uses safeWriteJson, which writes a temporary file, commits by rename, and restores the backup on failure (src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts:96-191). Metadata-stage failures have explicit handling and are retried on the next save. The new usageByModel: undefined value is passed through the history merge to clear stale data, and consumers fall back to unrecorded usage when the field is absent (webview-ui/src/utils/usage.ts:214-221).
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
Cancellation still has a concrete abandoned-authentication path. getGitHubToken iterates two scope sets at copilotQuota.ts:84-90, but raceAbort at copilotQuota.ts:72-78 does not reject when its signal is already aborted. If the first getSession resolves without a session and cancellation occurs before the second scope starts, the second getSession can never settle and the new raceAbort listener never fires. The caller leaves and clears inFlight at lines 177-185, so a later request starts duplicate authentication while the abandoned request remains pending. The current never-settling-session test covers cancellation during the first lookup, not this interleaving.
Resolution
Check signal.aborted synchronously in raceAbort before adding the listener, or call signal.throwIfAborted() before each scope lookup. Add a regression test where the first scope returns undefined, cancellation occurs before the second lookup, and the second lookup never settles; verify the cancelled call resolves promptly and a new request starts independently.

Why one PR. The Usage tab is one feature. The limits, the history, and the per-model usage record share types (ProviderQuota, usageByModel). A split leaves a half-working tab between merges. I already split the larger first PR (#2216) into three: time/date (#2223), fonts (#2224), and this one. The other two are under the limit.
Why the size is mostly parsers.providerQuotas.ts is the payload parsers for nine providers. They are pure functions of a JSON payload. usage.ts is a pure view model. Both have their own specs, including edge cases, DST, and CSV safety. The code that touches the network is small.
What I ask for. An exclusion for this PR only, or a one-time limit bump for the two packages.
If you prefer a split. I can cut it as: (1) the extension quota services and the message, (2) the history view model and the Usage tab. That makes the second PR depend on the first.

two provider instances with the same request ID to verify their requests remain
isolated.
Review comments at @src/services/language-models/copilotQuota.ts:
- Around line 114-117: Update the Copilot quota cache flow so failed refreshes
do not retain stale successes and cached results are reused only for the GitHub
token that produced them. In the cache and fetch logic around getGitHubToken and
parseCopilotQuota, clear the cache on missing tokens, failed responses, and
caught errors; store the token with successful results and check it before
reusing a cached result. Preserve the existing in-flight request behavior and
add a test in copilotQuota.spec.ts covering a forced refresh failure after a
cached success.
Review comments at @src/services/language-models/providerQuotas.ts:

OAuth profiles, even if a stale key remains saved.
Review comments at @webview-ui/src/components/settings/ProviderLimits.tsx:
- Line 70: Update the empty-quotas handling in ProviderLimits so an empty
response does not hide the Refresh action; retain a way to retry quota loading
while preserving the existing display for connected providers.
- Line 44: Update the request ID generation around counter.current so IDs remain
unique across ProviderLimits component mounts; use a stable shared counter or
another unique-ID source instead of a counter reset on each mount, while
preserving the provider-quotas prefix.
Review comments at @webview-ui/src/components/settings/UsageSettings.tsx:
- Line 312: Update the mode breakdown mapping to use the full label from
bucketRow(m) instead of splitting it at “ · ”, preserving the “no price”
distinction for unpriced usage.
Review comments at @webview-ui/src/utils/usage.ts:
- Around line 261-270: Update the cacheHitRate calculation in the usage result
to use tokensIn as the denominator, since it already includes cache reads, and
cap the ratio at 1 while retaining the zero-input fallback. Update the
usage.spec.ts fixture and expected hit rate to use a tokensIn/cacheReads pair
consistent with that definition.

## Visual Tests (Playwright Story Gallery)
### When a UI change needs a snapshot
Skip a visual test when the change is behavior-only (state transitions, handler wiring, validation) — those belong in Vitest. Visual tests are for what JSDOM cannot verify.
[warning] 61-61: This synchronous effect update causes an extra render: Calling setState synchronously within an effect can trigger cascading renders. Prefer deriving or initializing the value before render. If the effect must read a browser API after mount, treat this as advisory or suppress it with // react-doctor-disable-next-line react-hooks-js/set-state-in-effect.
Effects are intended to synchronize state between React and external systems such as manually updating the DOM, state management libraries, or other platform APIs. In general, the body of an effect should do one or both of the following:
Update external systems with the latest state from React.
Subscribe for updates from some external system, calling setState in a callback function when external state changes.
⚠️Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Move the request-ID increment out of the component body so React Compiler can optimize it.
React Doctor reports that ++quotaRequestCounter on Line 48 is an update expression on a module-level variable. The compiler does not support it and skips memoization for ProviderLimits. The behavior is correct, and the module-level counter must stay. Wrap the increment in a module-scope helper.

src/services/language-models/copilotQuota.ts: 1
121-130: Stale Copilot quota can be served after sign-out or account switch.
A previous review already raised this point, and the thread is still open. getGitHubCopilotQuota returns a cached success at Line 91, before getGitHubToken() runs at Line 96. After a sign-out or account switch, a normal call within 60 seconds returns the previous account's quota. The new failure-clearing code does not run on this path, because no fetch happens. Invalidate the cache on session change, or store the token with the cached entry and compare it before reuse. Add a regression test that caches a result, changes the session, and makes a normal call within the TTL.
No custom-base-URL fields exist for these providers.
The four provider schemas expose API keys and provider-specific settings, but no base-URL setting. The requested ownHost change and custom-gateway test do not apply.
Addressed the "Persistence Integrity" error and the Codecov partials in 9191d4a.
taskMetadata now always emits usageByModel, as undefined when nothing was recorded. The history store merges onto the stored item, so omitting the key kept a stale breakdown after the messages were replaced (for example by a rewind). undefined overrides the stored value and is dropped on write, so the stored shape of older and empty tasks is unchanged. A regression test uses the real store and disk merge: it saves a task with usageByModel, saves it again without one, and checks the field is gone, in memory and after re-reading the file. It fails if the key is omitted.
Codecov: removed an unreachable signal.aborted check in copilotQuota.ts. Added a test for a newer request that keeps its slot when an older request with the same id finishes first.
Addressed the remaining review-gate findings in 017237c.
Persistence Integrity: the fix (taskMetadata always emits usageByModel, as undefined when empty) is in 9191d4a. The regression test goes through the real store. This push adds a Task test: overwriteClineMessages first persists a task with usageByModel, then replaces the messages with ones that record no usage. It asserts the history update carries an explicit usageByModel: undefined. The test fails if the key is omitted. If the gate still reports the old text, it is from an earlier commit.
Regression Evidence:packages/types/src/__tests__/history.test.ts now parses a representative usageByModel (provider, model, requests, tokens, cache, cost) and checks every nested value is kept. It also covers an entry with only the required fields, an item with no breakdown, and three invalid entries.
Lifecycle:loadProfiles takes the request signal and stops waiting on listConfig and the profile reads when it aborts. No further profile is requested after a cancel. The handler therefore releases its state on cancel even if a read never settles. A test covers a listConfig that never resolves. The Copilot token stage is bounded by the request signal and a 15 second timeout, so a session request that never settles cannot hold the quota request open.
Codecov: removed a branch that became unreachable with the above.

Review comments at @src/core/task-persistence/taskMetadata.ts:
- Line 117: Update Task.saveClineMessages to pass the merged messages returned
by saveTaskMessages into taskMetadata, so usageByModel is summarized from the
persisted snapshot rather than the stale local snapshot.
Review comments at
@src/core/webview/__tests__/webviewMessageHandler.providerQuotas.spec.ts:
- Line 271: Update the test around `provider.postMessageToWebview` to assert
that the response payload after `await older` corresponds to the older request,
then verify cancellation produces no additional response; retain the call-count
assertion as a separate check.

This PR adds a Usage tab to Settings. It shows live provider limits and a usage history.
