feat(read-file): record read scope and report clipping separately (U4, #1375) - #1913
This PR makes the read side honest about what it saw. Each read brackets itself with a bigint fs.stat pair and records an observation of the target only when both tokens match - so a file that changed underneath the read is never recorded as fully seen - and the record says whether the view was complete. "Lines clipped in this view" and "lines omitted from this view" become two separate notices instead of one conflated message.
Why it matters: a slice, a truncated read, or a lossy indentation view must never authorize a full-file replacement later. This unit is what makes the guard's "was this write earned by a read?" question answerable. It is the fourth of nine PRs for epic #1375 (chain tracked on #1991).

Tracking: issue 2019 (this unit's tracking issue; closed by the maintainer when the chain lands).
Refs: #1991 (chain tracking), #1375 (epic).
Description
What this PR changes:
ReadFileTool brackets each read with a bigint fs.stat pair and observes the target only when both tokens match, recording complete so a slice, truncated, or lossy view never authorizes a full-file replacement. A stat failure leaves the target unobserved and never fails the read.
indentation-reader separates "lines clipped in this view" from "lines omitted from this view"; the native and legacy read paths report the two notices independently.
Task owns a per-instance ObservationRegistry; Task.disposeOnce() retires it so a read that resumes after disposal cannot repopulate it, and both read paths skip the post-read stat and observation work once task.abort is set.
Consistency port: project-scoped MCP settings writes pass confineTo (the provider cwd, falling back to getWorkspacePath()); global writes stay unconstrained by design. The unit branches are not cumulative, so each branch carrying the writer needs its own copy of this port.
Why the diff looks bigger than the change: the chain is non-cumulative - this branch is based on main and carries its own copy of the earlier units' content, which the GitHub diff shows as context.
Review focus:src/core/tools/ReadFileTool.ts, src/integrations/misc/indentation-reader, src/core/task/Task.ts (dispose path), and the specs named in the Test Procedure.
Test Procedure
From the repository root, with dependencies installed:
pnpm --dir src test -- core/tools/__tests__/readFileTool.spec.ts integrations/misc/__tests__/indentation-reader.spec.ts services/mcp/__tests__/McpHub.spec.ts core/task/__tests__/Task.dispose.test.ts core/task/__tests__/observationRegistry.spec.ts
Expected: 203 passed across the suites this unit touches (readFileTool 97, plus indentation-reader, McpHub, Task.dispose and observationRegistry). Then pnpm --dir src exec tsc --noEmit - clean.
Manual check: point a workspace at a repo that ships .roo/mcp.json as a symlink to a file outside the workspace and confirm a project MCP setting write is refused.
Environment: Windows 11, Node 20, unit layer only.
Pre-Submission Checklist
Scope is one gate scope and matches the unit.
No .changeset or CHANGELOG changes (AGENTS.md).
src/eslint-suppressions.json unchanged - no suppression count increased.
New code lints clean (--max-warnings=0) rather than relying on suppressions.
Tests added at the lowest layer that would have caught each finding.
Visual Snapshot item considered: not applicable (no rendered surface).
Visual Snapshots
Not applicable - the two read notices are model-facing text, not a rendered surface.
Videos (interaction / animation only)
Not applicable.
Documentation Updates
No user-facing documentation change: no new setting, no new surface. No .changeset and no CHANGELOG edit (AGENTS.md).
Reviewer and maintainer questions are welcome as comments on this PR or on #1991.
Linked Issues check response
The check evaluated this pull against issue 2019 because the description used a
closing keyword for it; the reference is now a non-closing tracking line, the
shape the whole chain uses. Independently of the check, the flagged gap was
real and is fixed: the indentation reader now sets the clipping flag for every
result that contains a clipped returned line - the single-line limit case and
the expanded-block case both report it, at exactly the same cap semantics as
the slice path - and the read tool emits the clipping notice for indentation
reads separately from the omitted-lines notice, so a block that shows every
line it includes yet truncates one still tells the model the view is partial.
Native indentation tests cover the flag in both cases (with the exactly-at-cap
boundary as the positive control), and the tool-layer tests pin the two
notices independently.
File reads distinguish clipped lines from omitted lines and indicate when returned content is incomplete.
Bug Fixes
File updates use consistent locking for symlink paths and their targets.
File reads remain successful when file-version checks fail.
Clipping and truncation notices accurately reflect returned content, including when both occur together.
Failed writes leave the original file unchanged when failure occurs before publishing.
The pull request adds per-task file observations and read-completeness metadata. It also adds atomic text publication, canonical lock keys, and confined JSON writes. Project-scoped MCP settings writes pass the workspace root as the confinement scope.

Summary
Stage and publish text writes src/services/file-safety/safeWriteText.ts, src/services/file-safety/__tests__/safeWriteText*, src/utils/fileLock.ts, src/utils/__tests__/fileLock.canonicalKey.spec.ts
Text-write support resolves publish targets and canonical lock keys, validates staging paths, syncs staged content, preserves target modes, supports copy-based backups, and handles durability and Windows DACL errors with cleanup.
Confine and publish JSON writes src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts, src/utils/__tests__/safeWriteJson*
JSON writes validate scope before and under the lock, stage beside the resolved target, and publish to that target. They recheck scope after publication and attempt to remove an escaped publication only when its bytes and identity match.
Apply workspace confinement to MCP settings src/services/mcp/McpHub.ts, src/services/mcp/__tests__/McpHub.spec.ts
Project-scoped settings writes pass the workspace root as confineTo. Global settings writes leave it undefined.

Security Architecture Review
Security architecture risk:🟡 Moderate · up to a1b98
Read authorization remains intact, but JSON writes now follow file symlinks. A project configuration update can therefore modify configuration outside that project, including global tool-approval settings, when a workspace-controlled link points there.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · inferred: Project MCP updates inherit newly expanded write scope. If workspace .roo/mcp.json is a symlink to global MCP settings, a project-scoped tool-approval or server-setting action now changes the global referent rather than replacing the project link as the base did. The inspected caller authorizes the logical project source but does not check or obtain approval for the resolved destination. This creates a conditional cross-project configuration-integrity and approval-policy concern.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The new write exposure is local to destinations writable by the extension process, but is not limited to the logical project configuration path. A controlled file symlink can redirect a compatible configuration update to global MCP settings, making its effects persist across projects. Workspace-link control and an update action are required; automatic remote exploitation was not established.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A project mcp.json link to an existing global MCP configuration is read as project configuration. A project-scoped always-allow toggle then passes that same logical path to safeWriteJson, which now publishes onto the global referent. Reading through links predates the PR; mutation of the referent through this JSON publication path is the introduced change.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Read-file access retains RooIgnore filtering and approval before processing approved files. Publication rejects dangling terminal symlinks and non-regular caller staging files. These controls do not authorize an existing resolved destination against a project boundary.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Canonical advisory locks coordinate JSON writers using symlink aliases and referents. The general withFileLock helper still uses lexical path identity; equivalent coordination for every maintenance caller was not established, although the inspected task-history deletion caller uses its normal task-file path.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Keep intentional symlink support in the general writer, but require project configuration callers to authorize the resolved destination: reject destinations outside the project policy boundary or obtain explicit destination-specific consent before publication.

Explanation
The title "feat(read-file): record read scope and report clipping separately (U4, #1375)" matches the main changes: ReadFileTool records file observations scoped by completeness, and clipped-line notices are reported separately from omitted-line notices in the indentation reader and read tool. It names a real, central part of the changeset. The chain label (U4) and issue number add some noise but do not make the title misleading.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template sections: it has a Related GitHub Issue section, Description, Test Procedure, Pre-Submission Checklist, Visual Snapshots, Videos, Documentation Updates, Additional Notes, and Get in Touch. It explains what changes, why, the test commands and expected results, and review focus. The Related GitHub Issue section links tracking issue 2019 and the epic with non-closing references, which the author says is intentional for this chain. The description also includes a 'Linked Issues check response' section that is not part of the template. Some sections contain chain-process details (merge order, budget, superseded PR) that are not needed for a reviewer of this change. Overall the description is mostly complete and meets the pass threshold.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
Two credential exposure paths remain in src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts: - Lines 298, 371 and 407 resolve and write through a final-component symlink. If a user selects a planted symlink for settings export, src/core/config/importExport.ts:333-349 writes provider profiles, including API keys, at the attacker-readable referent. The base revision renamed onto the selected path instead. - Lines 335-379 check confinement before staging by path. If .roo/mcp.json points to an in-workspace file and an attacker swaps that referent's parent directory after the check, a project MCP settings write can stage credentials outside the workspace. The later cleanup cannot prevent a transient read. The base revision staged beside .roo/mcp.json rather than the referent.
Resolution
Reject unapproved symlink destinations for credential-bearing exports. For confined MCP writes, use handle-relative, no-follow staging and publication, or fail closed when those guarantees are unavailable. Add regression tests for both paths, including transient exposure during an ancestor swap.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
The prior rollback failure remains. In src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts:188-206, the new escape rollback checks identity and then unlinks by path. If another writer replaces the escaped file after the final stat, the unlink deletes that writer’s persisted state. Project MCP writes can reach this rollback after an ancestor swap (safeWriteJson.ts:443-452, McpHub.ts:2137-2143). The test at safeWriteJson.test.ts:1274-1294 checks sequential byte mismatches, not this race.
Resolution
Make escape rollback safe against concurrent replacement, or leave the file intact and report ConfinedPathEscapeError when safe removal cannot be guaranteed. Add a regression test that replaces the file between the final stat and unlink.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
Project-write fallback coverage remains missing. The PR uses getWorkspacePath() as the confinement root when provider cwd is unavailable in McpHub.ts:2080,2188,2391. The project confinement tests in McpHub.spec.ts:1236-1321 all set cwd and do not assert the fallback root. A regression could leave fallback writes unconstrained or reject valid writes.
Resolution
Add an MCP call-site test with provider cwd unavailable. Mock getWorkspacePath() to return a distinct path and assert that the project write passes that path as confineTo. Retain the explicit-cwd and global-write tests.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
Cleanup can still be skipped. In src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts:481-490, a confinement recheck can throw before staged-file cleanup or backup rollback. For example, if a rename fails after staging and the subsequent realpath check also fails, the .new file remains. Project MCP writes enable confinement. In src/services/file-safety/safeWriteText.ts:535-540,591-597,632-639, a failed backup deletion is ignored and the path is not retained for cleanup. This write entry point has no production caller in the current tree.
Resolution
Ensure confinement recheck errors cannot bypass staged-file cleanup or safe backup recovery. Add regression tests for failures after staging and backup creation. Track failed safeWriteText backup deletions for later cleanup and test that cleanup.

Require regression coverage at the lowest valid harness with behavior-focused assertions, including relevant negative, error, false/unset, and boundary cases.
Seam ruling (recorded on Zoo-Code-Org#1991, ids 6716644819 / 6716641767): the write path is
main's replacement protocol plus our path-safety graft, on one resolved string -
staging, the commit rename, the EPERM fallback's two renames and the rollback all
take resolvedTargetPath. No half-graft: a protocol that stages beside the referent
cannot rename onto the caller's spelling.
Conflicts and how each was resolved (three files, everything else merged clean):
- src/utils/fileLock.ts: main's file verbatim (options-driven stale-lock retry,
grace, trace line) plus our canonical lock-key derivation, so an alias and its
referent share one lock. No protocol change.
- src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts: main's 286-line protocol kept as the base (recovery
pass, EPERM two-step fallback, backup rollback, trace stages, merge). Our side
contributes only path safety: confineTo + ConfinedPathEscapeError, the scope-root
helpers, undoEscapedPublish, the pre-lock confinement check, the in-lock
resolvePublishTarget/resolveLockKey re-derivation loop with the
"refusing to publish ... kept changing" refusal, the final in-lock confinement
decision, and the post-commit escape re-check that undoes an escaped publish
before rethrowing (review row 4445714699). Delegation to safeWriteText was
dropped from our side, so the primitive's errors are no longer imported here.
- src/utils/__tests__/safeWriteJson.test.ts: main's 822-line blob is the base, with
our 10 confinement/identity tests appended inside the describe, adapted to the
replacement protocol's temp naming. Nothing was dropped to make a conflict
disappear; what was not carried, and why:
* u4 diff hunks 1-17 rewrite main's shared tests to observe the delegation
(temp names under safeWriteText, backup lifecycle living in the primitive,
doUnmock comments). Under the chosen protocol there is no delegation, so those
rewrites do not apply and main's tests stand unchanged.
* "fails the publish instead of following a swapped ancestor onto an existing
target": it asserts the primitive's staging identity guard, which main's
protocol does not have; under this protocol the same fixture fails during
staging because the ancestor it resolved through was moved aside. Rewriting it
into an escape-path test would duplicate the two escape tests that are carried.
* a detached comment block above the confined-write test that described mode
parity through tempPath: main's protocol does not copy the target's mode onto
the staged temp, so the claim is not true of this file and was not carried.
Mode parity for the JSON path is a chain-level question, not something this
merge should silently assert or silently lose.
Two rename sites had to move onto the resolved string to close the seam: the
commit rename (was absoluteFilePath) and the rollback rename. The rollback carries
a type-level fallback because the backup can only exist after the target is fixed.
Verification, pinned node v22.23.4 (box node is 25.9.0): tsc -p src/tsconfig.json
exit 0; prettier --check clean on all three files; vitest misc shard filtered to
safeWriteJson.test: 51 passed, 4 skipped (main's 33 declarations plus our 10,
some it.each-expanded). Skips are the platform-gated symlink rows.
Disclosed, not resolved here: mutation-diff remains advisory-red at the extension
cap (recorded verbatim on Zoo-Code-Org#1991); no local Stryker preflight was run for this
merge; the core shard's unhandled EnvironmentTeardownError is still unexplained.
Refs: Zoo-Code-Org#1375, Zoo-Code-Org#1991, Zoo-Code-Org#2019.
The merge left two rows in src/utils/__tests__/safeWriteJson.lockKey.spec.ts red,
both because they described the delegation flow rather than the write protocol
this branch now uses. Each was resolved by keeping the stronger claim, not by
loosening a test to fit the merged file:
- safeWriteJson no longer logs a cleanup failure when the staged temp file is
already gone. The commit rename consumes it, or an earlier teardown removed
it, so ENOENT there is the expected outcome of a failed publish rather than a
second failure. This is our side's behaviour and it is restored into main's
catch block; any other cleanup error is still logged with the same message.
- the lock-key order row asserted the resolution passes as the delegation flow
made them, including two lstat calls that belonged to the primitive's
staging-path checks. Under the replacement protocol those checks do not exist
and one re-derivation pass is shorter, so the expected sequence drops one
realpath and the two lstat calls. The invariant the row exists for - every
resolution pass runs after the lock was taken, so the caller queued behind the
peer is unaffected - is asserted unchanged.
Verification, pinned node v22.23.4 (box node is 25.9.0): vitest misc shard exit 0
with 2116 passed and 17 skipped; tsc -p src/tsconfig.json exit 0; prettier
--check clean on both files. Suppression entries for these paths are absent in
both this branch and main, so no count moved.
Refs: Zoo-Code-Org#1375, Zoo-Code-Org#1991, Zoo-Code-Org#2019.
With safeWriteJson on main's replacement protocol, the only production
consumers of src/services/file-safety/safeWriteText.ts are
resolvePublishTarget and resolveLockKey; the write entry point itself is
exercised only by its own specs. knip --production - the step CI runs -
reported it as an unused export, so it is tagged @internal rather than adding
an ignore entry or editing knip.json: one mechanism, with the reason written
next to the tag.
Whether main should carry two publish primitives at all is Zoo-Code-Org#2350's question,
not this branch's. The tag states today's fact without deciding it, and the

… read
Row 4202836427 asked for a test of the clipped-but-not-truncated branch at
offset 1. That branch joins two sentences and then the read, and only the
second sentence tells the model that every line was returned. The neighbouring
rows assert substrings, so both surviving mutants sat inside the join.
The new row pins what the old rows left free:
- the header line and the notice are adjacent, and the character cap the notice
names is MAX_LINE_LENGTH imported by the test rather than a literal;
- the exact separator between the two sentences, quoted verbatim;
- the join between the notice and the read, and that nothing follows the read.
It also asserts the observation stays incomplete and that the notice does not
advertise a next offset, since no later offset exists to read.
Written against the tool's real output rather than an expectation: for this
fixture the pushed result is 182 characters - the File: header, the notice, then
the two returned lines - and MAX_LINE_LENGTH is 2000.
Measured on this content with pinned node v22.23.4 (box node is 25.9.0), and the

knip --production exit 0; eslint --max-warnings=0 clean on the three files this
branch touches under src.

Seam resolution for the merge of main (73931fe8) - branch head e3d632799
Main landed as one merge commit (4391a8b07) so the resolution is auditable in one place. Per the
ruling recorded on #1991 (id 6716644819): main's write protocol plus this branch's path-safety
graft, with the staging path and every rename site on the same resolved string. Three files
conflicted; the rest of the merge took cleanly.
src/utils/fileLock.ts - main's file verbatim (options-driven stale-lock retry, grace, trace
line), plus the canonical lock-key derivation, so an alias and its referent take one lock.
src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts - main's replacement protocol kept as the base: recovery pass, EPERM
two-step fallback, backup rollback, trace stages, merge. This branch contributes only path safety: confineTo + ConfinedPathEscapeError, the scope-root helpers, undoEscapedPublish, the pre-lock
confinement check, the in-lock re-derivation of the publish target and lock key with the "refusing
to publish ... kept changing" refusal, the final in-lock confinement decision, and the post-commit
escape re-check that undoes an escaped publish before rethrowing. Two rename sites had to move
onto the resolved string for the seam to be whole: the commit rename, which was naming absoluteFilePath, and the rollback rename.
src/utils/__tests__/safeWriteJson.test.ts - main's blob as the base, with this branch's
confinement and identity rows inside the describe and adapted to the protocol's temp naming. Not
carried, with reasons: the 17 hunks that rewrote main's shared tests to observe the delegation
(this protocol does not delegate); the swapped-ancestor row, which asserts the primitive's staging
identity guard that main's protocol does not have; and a detached comment that described mode
parity through the staging path, which is not a property of this file under this protocol.
src/utils/__tests__/safeWriteJson.lockKey.spec.ts - the lock-order row asserted the resolution
passes as the delegation flow made them, including two lstat calls that belonged to the
primitive's staging-path checks. Those checks do not exist here, so the sequence is one realpath
and two lstat calls shorter; the invariant the row exists for - every resolution pass runs after
the lock was taken, so a caller queued behind the peer is unaffected - is asserted unchanged. The
cleanup row asserted that a staged temp already gone is not a second failure: that behaviour was
restored in main's catch block rather than the test being loosened to fit it.
Three things this unit does not decide, named rather than answered:
Mode parity for the JSON path. Main's blob at 73931fe8 (286 lines) has no mode-preservation
helper - it stages, streams and flushes, and never copies the target's mode onto the staged temp -
while the feat(task): observation registry with read completeness (U3, #1375) #1912 resolution of this same file carries _copyTargetMode. Two clean resolutions of
two branches differ on a CWE-732-adjacent property. Which one main keeps is a chain decision, not
something to paper over on one branch.
Gates at e3d632799, pinned node v22.23.4 (box node is 25.9.0): tsc -p src/tsconfig.json exit 0; prettier --check clean; knip --production exit 0; eslint --max-warnings=0 clean on the src files
this branch touches. Vitest: misc 2116 passed / 17 skipped, api 4070 passed / 2 skipped, tree-sitter
337 passed / 12 skipped, core 4280 passed / 9 skipped - all exit 0. Services locally: 6 failed / 1676
passed. Five are EPERM: operation not permitted, symlink in services/rules/__tests__/rules.spec.ts
(this box cannot create symlinks) and one is a DaclRestoreError in safeWriteText.integration.spec.ts; neither is caused by this merge - the merge's diff under src/services/file-safety is empty and that spec imports only fs/promises, os, path and ../safeWriteText - and both were green on CI's windows runner at the pre-merge head. CI is the
arbiter; quoting the local numbers and saying what they are.
Also disclosed, not resolved here: no local Stryker preflight was run for this push and no Stryker disable directive exists anywhere on the branch; mutation-diff stays advisory-red at the extension
cap for the reason quoted verbatim on #1991 (id 6716644819).
Follow-up: the ubuntu leg forced the mode-parity point I had left open
Head 8fa7d858c is pushed. At e3d632799 the required leg platform-unit-test (ubuntu-latest)
was red and platform-unit-test (windows-latest) was cancelled by it - "The strategy
configuration was canceled because unit-test.ubuntu-latest_ubuntu-late failed" - so the windows
result at that head measures nothing.
Three rows failed, all in src/utils/__tests__/safeWriteJson.test.ts, all test.skipIf(process.platform === "win32"), all introduced by this merge:
confines a write whose symlink referent stays inside the confined directory - ENOENT ... open '.../project-in/.real-mcp.json.new_<ts>_<rand>.tmp';
confines a scope path that itself runs through a symlink and does not exist yet - same shape
on .../alias-project/nested/.mcp.json.new_<ts>_<rand>.tmp;
preserves a restrictive 0o600 target mode through the atomic publish - expected 420 to be 384 at statSync(currentTestFilePath).mode & 0o777.
1 and 2 were mine: the escape-undo capture read the staged temp before _streamDataToFile had
written it, so every confined write that reached the publish read a file that did not exist yet.
Windows cannot show this: those rows skip windows and fs.symlinkSync of a file fails EPERM on
this box (measured, pinned node v22.23.4), so no local misc-shard run executes them - the local
tally read 2116 passed / 17 skipped before and after the fix, which is exactly why a green local
misc shard was not evidence about them.
3 is the leftover named above. Rather than hold a required context red to make the point, I took
the convergence option: _copyTargetMode grafted verbatim from the #1912 head 085fbf85e (stat
the target, chmod the staged file, log and continue on a stat or chmod failure, nothing to copy
for a target that is not there yet), called on the same resolved string between the staging write
and the flush, where 085fbf85e calls it. git merge-base --is-ancestor 085fbf85e 73931fe8
exits 1, so this is not a claim that main accepted the step and dropped it - only that the two
resolutions of this function differ on a permission property. It is reversible in review: delete
the call and the helper and the file returns to main's behaviour, with the row windows-only again.
Audit of what else this could move: safeWriteJson.test.ts holds exactly one mode assertion
(line 1047, the row above) and exactly four platform-conditional rows, all skipIf(win32). The
other 41 chmod / mode & 0o777 matches under those two test directories belong to safeWriteText.spec.ts, which exercises the primitive rather than this path. For a target created
by writeFile the copy is chmod(0o644), a no-op, so the interruption and lock-order rows keep
their behaviour and their local tallies.
CI at 8fa7d858c when this was written: check-translations completed/success; platform-unit-test (ubuntu-latest) in_progress/null; platform-unit-test (windows-latest) in_progress/null; compile in_progress/null; knip completed/success; e2e-mock in_progress/null; mutation-diff completed/failure.
Disclosures standing: no local Stryker preflight for either push and no Stryker disable
directive anywhere on the branch; mutation-diff came back success at e3d632799 where it had
been red at e62f198ce, and I did not establish why (the scope step recomputes changed
executable lines against the merge base, and the merge moved that base to 73931fe8 - plausible,
not measured). The core shard's EnvironmentTeardownError is still unexplained: it fired on two
runs before e3d632799 and not once at that head, which is not the same as a fix.
Two _copyTargetMode variants now exist on this series (recorded per the Lead)
All three copies live in the same file, src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts (not in src/services/file-safety/safeWriteText.ts), measured with git grep -l _copyTargetMode <sha>
and git rev-parse <sha>:<file>:
log-and-continue: 085fbf85e blob eebd1ffdd7c2c5e6733ecf11d8058fa2b430d2bf, and this PR's
head 8fa7d858c blob 1e4031a7ef6e3e8d999792f6547955ebca26c9f5. Stat the target, chmod the
staged file, log and continue on a stat or chmod failure, nothing to copy for an absent target.
Whichever merge lands first supplies the canonical text. That is merge order, not merit, and
nobody on this series should read the difference as a judgement about which shape is better. #2350 plus merge order is the arbiter; I am not converging my copy onto the fail-closed text.
Measured: merging main moved the mutation gate, and it moved back
mutation-diff at e62f198ce (before this PR merged main): failure - check-run 125486348227,
workflow run 41506292261 - gate line as recorded there: "Mutation gate failed: extension has
589 changed executable lines (limit 500). Split the PR or obtain a maintainer-reviewed narrow
exclusion." mutation-diff at e3d632799 (four commits after the merge of main 73931fe8): success -
check-run 128619142516, workflow run 42444051212. mutation-diff at 8fa7d858c (this commit, ~14 new executable lines): failure again - check-run
128620716380, workflow run 42444581569.
So: merging main took the changed-executable-line delta under the cap and it is the cheapest
lever on that cap - the PR's own delta reads +5153/-39 against 73931fe8 where it read +5188/-161
before the merge. It is not durable: the next commit went back over. What I have not established
is the failure class at 8fa7d858c: the job log 403s for this token and the annotations only say
"Process completed with exit code 1", so I cannot say from evidence whether it is the line cap
again or surviving mutants in the grafted helper's two error branches, which no test exercises.
Both are consistent with what I can see; neither is measured. I will not call it one or the other.
The escape-undo capture read the staged temp before _streamDataToFile had written it, so every
confined write that reached the publish failed with
`ENOENT: no such file or directory, open '<dir>/.<name>.new_<ts>_<rand>.tmp'`. CI's ubuntu leg
name is visible in the misc block of platform-unit-test (ubuntu-latest) at e3d6327 on
"confines a write whose symlink referent stays inside the confined directory" and "confines a
scope path that itself runs through a symlink and does not exist yet". Windows never showed it:
both rows are test.skipIf(process.platform === "win32"), and fs.symlinkSync of a file fails
EPERM on this box (measured, pinned node v22.23.4), so no local run of the misc shard executes
them - local tallies read 2116 passed / 17 skipped before and after.
The read now sits after the staging write and before any mode handling, so the bytes compared by
a post-commit escape undo are the bytes that were staged and a restrictive target mode cannot
turn the capture into a failure. A read failure still aborts the write, which is what the
surrounding comment already required.
At this commit the third ubuntu failure - "preserves a restrictive 0o600 target mode through the
atomic publish", expected 420 to be 384 - is still red by design: it is a separate mechanism and
the next commit is the one that answers it.
Gates on this commit's tree, pinned node v22.23.4 (box node 25.9.0): misc exit 0 with 2116
passed / 17 skipped (unchanged tallies, and it cannot prove the two rows above); tsc
-p src/tsconfig.json exit 0; prettier --check clean; eslint --max-warnings=0 exit 0.

…en it
CWE-732: the commit rename lands the staged file onto the target, so the file that survives carries
the staged file's mode. A 0o600 target was being published 0o644 from the umask-derived default,
which is the third ubuntu failure at e3d6327 - "preserves a restrictive 0o600 target mode through
the atomic publish", AssertionError: expected 420 to be 384 at safeWriteJson.test.ts:1047.
The helper is grafted verbatim from the Zoo-Code-Org#1912 head 085fbf8: stat the target, chmod the staged
file, log and continue on a stat or chmod failure, nothing to copy for a target that is not there
yet. Call site and ordering match 085fbf8 - after the staging write, before the flush - and the
call names the same resolved string the staging, the commit rename, the escape re-checks and the
rollback rename name, which is the seam rule for this file.
That head is not an ancestor of 73931fe (git merge-base --is-ancestor, exit 1), so this does not
claim main accepted and dropped it - only that the two resolutions differ on a permission property,
which is the leftover recorded on the PR rather than a thing to resolve silently inside one unit.
Two variants of this helper now exist on the series, both in src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts and nowhere
in src/services/file-safety/safeWriteText.ts: log-and-continue here (impl blob 1e4031a
92f6547955ebca26c9f5, same as 8fa7d85) and at 085fbf8 (blob eebd1ff
30d2bf), and fail-closed at the Zoo-Code-Org#1917 head c4bd9a2 (blob
fbe8b07). Whichever merge lands first supplies the canonical text:
merge order, not merit. Zoo-Code-Org#2350 plus merge order is the arbiter, and this copy is not being converged
onto the fail-closed text.
Both failure branches carry rows, because a helper grafted for a permission property with two
unexercised error paths is a changed-line coverage hole whatever the mutation gate decides:
"logs and still publishes when the target's mode cannot be read" and "logs and still publishes when
the staged file's mode cannot be set". They drive fs.stat and fs.chmod through the file's existing
fs/promises mock factory (chmod is newly a vi.fn() delegating to the real implementation) rather
than a real EACCES/EPERM, which needs privileges neither this box nor a CI runner has, so - unlike
the symlink and mode rows above - these two run on every platform. A name-filtered run of this spec
selects exactly those two rows and both pass.
Gates on this commit's tree, pinned node v22.23.4 (box node 25.9.0): misc exit 0 at 2118 passed / 17
skipped (2135 total, +2 rows); tsc -p src/tsconfig.json exit 0; prettier --check clean; eslint
--max-warnings=0 exit 0 on both touched files, run without --prune-suppressions so
src/eslint-suppressions.json is untouched; knip --production exit 0 run from the repo root, where
knip.json lives. git diff --name-only 8fa7d85 HEAD lists only this spec file, so the implementation
is byte-identical to the head whose CI is running and only test rows were added on top of it. The
three ubuntu rows themselves remain answered by CI's ubuntu leg, not by this box.

…re on an aliased temp
The file this repairs is main's: src/utils/__tests__/safeWriteJson.interruption.test.ts, blob
c9c5993 at 73931fe, and it was absent from this branch before the
merge (git cat-file -e e62f198:src/utils/__tests__/safeWriteJson.interruption.test.ts exits 128).
This is a prerequisite for a test main carries, not unit content: no production file is touched here.
Main's kill point is whole-path equality - child line 40, `if (path.resolve(String(newPath)) ===
targetPath)`, with targetPath = path.resolve(process.env.INTERRUPTION_TARGET_PATH). This PR publishes
through a realpath-resolved string, node's async fs.realpath expands an NTFS 8.3 alias, and
path.resolve preserves the spelling it is handed. On a runner whose temp path is reported as an alias
- the normal windows-latest condition, where the profile is RUNNER~1 - the writer's rename
destination and the parent's authorized spelling are two strings naming one file, the injection never
matches, the child prints WRITE_COMPLETED, and every row in the file fails. That is exactly what
platform-unit-test (windows-latest) reported at 8fa7d85: 12 failures, all of them
`expected 'WRITE_COMPLETED\n' to contain 'EXIT_AT_REPLACEMENT_RENAME'` at that file's line 187, with
the leg failing on its own merit (03:53:47 -> 04:00:01) rather than as a cancellation.
Measured on this box (pinned node v22.23.4; box node 25.9.0), in both directions: TEMP/TMP at
C:\work\Zoo-Code-fork\.tmp-alias-vps2f\long-directory-name-under-alias -> 12 passed; TEMP/TMP at its
8.3 form C:\work\ZOO-CO~1\TMP-AL~2\LONG-D~1 with main's copy -> 12 failed carrying CI's assertion
verbatim; the same aliased TEMP with the predicate below -> 12 passed; long spelling with the
predicate -> 12 passed, so nothing here is pinned to the alias.
This lands the basename plus the containing directory's dev+ino predicate, cited from 1fb5fcc,
which is where the fix exists today (Zoo-Code-Org#1912). Measured against that copy, this file differs by 13
insertions and 13 deletions, and every one of those lines is either the local variable name (this
file keeps main's `targetPath`, that copy renamed it `targetSpec`) or the re-wrapping of the
explanatory comment - so Zoo-Code-Org#1912's fix touched nothing else in the file, and the predicate here is the
same mechanism written into the copy main carries. That is not a convergence onto Zoo-Code-Org#1912's text: it is
a second lane grafting the same thing, and the two copies will conflict. Whichever merge lands first
supplies the canonical text - merge order, not merit - and the conflict is expected rather than
surprising.
One disclosure about the previous commit that its own message did not carry: 7bf2654 added
`chmod: vi.fn(actual.chmod)` to the fs/promises mock factory in safeWriteJson.test.ts. That spec's
beforeEach pre-creates the target (line 90), so every row in that file that reaches the publish now
calls chmod through the delegating spy where it previously reached the real function through
`...actual`; behaviour is unchanged because the spy calls through, and no row before that commit
asserted on chmod (`git grep -nE "vi\\.mocked\\(fs\\.chmod\\)" 8fa7d85` returns nothing).
Gates on this commit's tree, pinned 22.23.4: interruption spec 12 passed under both temp spellings;
prettier --check clean; eslint --max-warnings=0 exit 0 on the touched file, run without
--prune-suppressions so src/eslint-suppressions.json is untouched; tsc -p src/tsconfig.json exit 0.
The misc shard was measured on the identical tree at 7bf2654 (2118 passed / 17 skipped) and this
commit touches only this spec file.

Series note: why this PR carries a test-only fix to a file main owns
Commit f739a5fa3 (this branch's head) changes one file, src/utils/__tests__/safeWriteJson.interruption.test.ts,
which is main's (c9c5993f847b0a6166de801b0da4c37e730423b4 at 73931fe8) and was absent from this branch
before the merge (git cat-file -e e62f198ce:<that path> exits 128). It is a prerequisite, not unit
content.
Measured chain, on pinned node v22.23.4:
CI at 8fa7d858c: platform-unit-test (windows-latest) failed on its own merit - 12 failures, every one expected 'WRITE_COMPLETED\n' to contain 'EXIT_AT_REPLACEMENT_RENAME' at that file's line 187. The
ubuntu leg was green at the same head.
Cause: main's kill point is whole-path equality (child line 40, if (path.resolve(String(newPath)) === targetPath)). This PR publishes on a realpath-resolved string; async fs.realpath expands an NTFS 8.3
alias and path.resolve preserves the spelling it was handed. Under an aliased TEMP the writer's rename
destination and the harness's authorized spelling are two strings for one file, the injection never
matches, the child prints WRITE_COMPLETED, and all 12 rows fail.
Reproduced here: TEMP/TMP at C:\work\Zoo-Code-fork\.tmp-alias-vps2f\long-directory-name-under-alias ->
12 passed; at its 8.3 form C:\work\ZOO-CO~1\TMP-AL~2\LONG-D~1 -> 12 failed with CI's assertion
verbatim; with the basename + containing-directory dev+ino predicate -> 12 passed under both spellings.
The general shape, which is the part that matters beyond this PR: main is green only because main's
writer does not canonicalize. The moment a lane grafts path safety onto the seam, the writer publishes
to a realpath-resolved target while main's interruption spec compares whole paths, and every row in that
file reddens on a runner whose TEMP is reported as an 8.3 alias - which is the ordinary
windows-latest condition (the profile is RUNNER~1 there). #1914 and #1917 carry the same seam and will
meet the same leg.
The canonical home of this fix is main-side. It currently exists in two lane copies - 1fb5fcc47 on #1912
and f739a5fa3 here - and lanes will keep grafting identical content in separate commits until main
carries it. Merge order decides which text survives; the conflict is expected rather than surprising.
One disclosure about the preceding commit 7bf2654b3, which its own message did not carry: it added chmod: vi.fn(actual.chmod) to the fs/promises mock factory in safeWriteJson.test.ts. That spec's beforeEach pre-creates the target (line 90), so every row in that file that reaches the publish now
calls fs.chmod through the delegating spy where it previously reached the real function through ...actual. Behaviour is unchanged because the spy calls through, and no row before that commit asserted
on chmod (git grep -nE "vi\\.mocked\\(fs\\.chmod\\)" 8fa7d858c returns nothing). The two new mode rows do
assert on it, by design.
The row "logs and still publishes when the target's mode cannot be read", added
in 7bf2654, asserted that the error log contains the path the test handed
safeWriteJson. The helper logs the target it resolved, and on Windows those two
spellings differ whenever a component of the path carries an 8.3 name, so this
row went red on the windows leg of f739a5f - misc reported 1 failed | 118
passed | 1 skipped with "AssertionError: expected \"error\" to be called with
arguments: [ StringContaining{...}, Anything ]" - while the ubuntu leg of the
same head passed.
Reproduced here on the pinned node v22.23.4 by pointing TEMP at a directory that
has an 8.3 name (TEMP=C:\work\ZOO-CO~1\TMP-AL~2): the same row failed with the
same assertion, and the printed diff named the mechanism. The test's path was
C:\work\ZOO-CO~1\TMP-AL~2\safeWriteJson-test-E6lc0Q\test-file.json and the log
named C:\work\Zoo-Code-fork\.tmp-alias-vps2f\safeWriteJson-test-E6lc0Q\
test-file.json: same directory, same file, different spelling. The CI log elides
both strings, so what is being named is the class - an assertion that pins the
caller's spelling against a writer-resolved spelling - not the runner's
direction, which its log does not show.
The fix pins what resolution preserves instead: the mkdtemp directory's own name
and the file's name, with the original two-argument matcher kept, the target
identified by its name. The claim is unchanged - the failure must still be
logged, and the log must still name the target - but it is no longer stated as a
spelling. Before the change this file's other 52 rows already passed under that
aliased TEMP, and this was the only assertion in the file that compared a
stringContaining against a path variable, measured from the file itself.
Gates below were run after committing, against this tree, on pinned node
v22.23.4: the file runs 53 passed / 4 skipped under TEMP=C:\work\ZOO-CO~1\
TMP-AL~2, under TEMP=C:\work\Zoo-Code-fork\.tmp-alias-vps2f and under the
default temp; eslint --max-warnings=0 exits 0 with src/eslint-suppressions.json
untouched; prettier --check exits 0. Test-only: no implementation line moves.
… wrapper
Two module-private helpers on this branch reimplemented `src/utils/errorCode.ts`,
which main already ships and which `safeWriteJson.ts` already imports:
- `safeWriteJson._scopeErrorCode` (2 call sites) -> `getErrorCode`
- `safeWriteText.errorCode` (8 call sites) -> `getErrorCode`
- `safeWriteText._fsyncFile(fd)` wrapped a single `fsSync.fsyncSync(fd)` call; the 4
call sites now call it directly.
Equivalence was checked at the call sites rather than assumed. All 10 uses compare
the result against a string code literal (`=== "ENOENT"`, `!== "ENOENT"`, and the
ENOTDIR variants), so the one real difference between the bodies - main's helper
additionally guards `typeof error.code === "string"`, `_scopeErrorCode` casts, and
`errorCode` stringifies - cannot change a decision: an absent or non-string code
yields `undefined` from `getErrorCode` and either a coerced string or `undefined`
from the private helpers, and both take the same branch against a string literal.
This is line-count work for the mutation gate, not a behaviour change: no assertion
moved, no expectation weakened, nothing dropped to make a number fit. The gate
counts changed executable lines per package against main and fails above 500. With
the repository's own counting rules applied locally (scripts/stryker-diff.mjs) at
b86511f the `extension` package measured 509, which is the number CI reported
for that head; after this commit the same selector reports 499 (safeWriteText
+272 -> +266, safeWriteJson +135 -> +131). The removals are the duplicate helper
bodies and the wrapper only.

(5 exist in this lane) 81 passed / 4 skipped; knip and knip --production, both with
--treat-config-hints-as-errors, exit 0; knip-policy test 8 pass / 0 fail.
The services shard is unchanged from the pre-commit baseline: the same 6 failures
with and without this commit, classed from the messages themselves - 5 `EPERM:
operation not permitted, symlink ...` fixture-creation failures in services/rules
(unprivileged symlink creation in %TEMP% on this box) and 1 `DaclRestoreError` in
safeWriteText.integration.spec.ts (the saved access rights could not be restored
here). The hosted windows leg passes both files at b86511f. Local results
describe this tree only: pnpm 10.8.1 ignores the `pnpm` field in package.json
(onlyBuiltDependencies, overrides), so a resolution difference is the first
candidate if a local shard disagrees with a hosted leg.
PR head moved to 416179d (tree 0a46a4b6dc) to answer the mutation-diff cap, plus review-state facts that belong in-thread.
Cap. CI reported, verbatim: Mutation gate failed: extension has 509 changed executable lines (limit 500). Split the PR or obtain a maintainer-reviewed narrow exclusion. The redundancy pointed at - hoisting a re-derived resolved target above the rename sites - is not available in this file: resolvedTargetPath is derived once under the lock (src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts:304, re-checked for convergence inside the loop at :323) and the sites at :377, :413, :427, :429 and :507 already reference that one variable instead of each re-deriving it, so there was nothing to hoist there.
What was duplicated is helper code. safeWriteJson._scopeErrorCode and safeWriteText.errorCode each re-implemented src/utils/errorCode.ts, which main ships and which safeWriteJson.ts already imports, and safeWriteText._fsyncFile(fd) wrapped a single fsSync.fsyncSync(fd) call. Those three definitions are now gone and their 14 call sites use the shared helper or the sync call directly. Equivalence is stated as a measured claim, not an assumed one: all 10 error-code uses compare the result against a string code literal, so an absent or non-string code yields undefined from getErrorCode where the private helpers returned undefined or a coerced string, and both take the same branch at every one of those sites. No test moved, no assertion weakened, no claim trimmed to fit the number.
Selector = the repository's own counting rules from scripts/stryker-diff.mjs, replayed locally against the committed tree at pinned node v22.23.4. extension changed executable lines: 509 -> 499 (limit 500, over=false). Per file: safeWriteText +272 -> +266, safeWriteJson +135 -> +131; the other six files are untouched by this commit. The file-level deltas are the two duplicate helper bodies and the one-line wrapper, which is where the 10 lines came from.
Review-state fact for census row 23. Its premise is gone at this head: git grep over src at 416179d returns 0 matching lines for statForObservation, 0 for recordObservation and 0 for decodeReadText, so the ask behind that row no longer describes code in this diff. Row 6 likewise points at text this branch carried whole.
Fact that belongs to PR #1914 rather than here, recorded on that PR as well: src/core/tools/guardedWrite.ts has no production consumer at the #1914 head. It is not part of this PR at all - git grep for guardedWrite at 416179d returns 0 lines in this tree - and it enters the #1914 diff at +394 counted executable lines, so the split plan on #1991 treats it as severable rather than load-bearing.
Census rows 4 and 19 stay answered-and-open for the reviewer; nothing is being closed on this push.
Gates at 416179d, run on the tree this commit carries, pinned node v22.23.4: prettier --check on both changed files exit 0; eslint --max-warnings=0 on both files exit 0 with src/eslint-suppressions.json unmodified; tsc -p src/tsconfig.json --noEmit exit 0; misc shard 119 passed / 1 skipped files (2118 passed / 17 skipped tests); core shard 197 files (4280 passed / 9 skipped tests); misc restricted to the write-protocol proof files, of which 5 exist in this lane, 81 passed / 4 skipped; knip and knip --production, both with --treat-config-hints-as-errors, exit 0; knip-policy test 8 pass / 0 fail.
The services shard is unchanged from the pre-commit baseline: the same 6 failures with and without this commit, classed from the messages themselves - 5 x EPERM: operation not permitted, symlink ... fixture-creation failures in services/rules (unprivileged symlink creation in %TEMP% on this box) and 1 x DaclRestoreError in safeWriteText.integration.spec.ts (the saved access rights could not be restored here). The hosted windows leg passes both files at b86511f. Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
The retained Windows backup is created under the parent directory and populated with fs.copyFile, without an explicit original-DACL application. It may not carry the original access rights promised by the DACL-restore error handler, which also deletes the saved descriptor dump.
The retained backup may expose old content under inherited permissions and may not provide the advertised recovery copy of the original access rights.
This can occur when: Use backup: true on a Windows file with a custom DACL, then make restoration of the committed file's DACL fail.

Review comments at @src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts:
- Line 403: Update the safe-write flow around _copyTargetMode to retain a

create the temporary JSON file with restrictive permissions from the outset,
then apply the intended final mode through _copyTargetMode before publication.
Preserve the existing resolvedTargetPath staging and publication flow.
- Line 413: Update the staging flow in safeWriteJson around fs.rename so the
temporary file receives restrictions equivalent to the resolved target
referent’s DACL before any JSON bytes are written, including when the target is
a symlink. Reuse an established ACL-preservation mechanism; if the referent’s
restrictions cannot be preserved, abort the write rather than staging or
publishing the file.
- Around line 311-314: In the safeWriteJson flow, verify that the canonical key
for the captured resolvedTargetPath matches the held lockKey before recovery and
merge; if it does not, retry resolution instead of proceeding with a target that
may no longer be bound to the lock.
- Around line 208-212: Make escape cleanup safe against replacement: the
separate stat and unlink of publishedPath can race, allowing cleanup to delete a
peer’s file. Update the cleanup path around the after identity check so removal
is bound to the same file identity as before, or avoid unlinking when that
cannot be guaranteed; preserve the existing safeguard against deleting a changed
file.
- Line 349: Update the recovery flow around recoverInterruptedReplacement to
resolve the target alias to its referent before scanning for recovery artifacts,
and use that same referent for both the scan and locked recovery. Preserve the
existing read behavior after recovery.
- Around line 202-204: Update the cleanup check around actualBytes so
unreadable, write-only published files can still be verified and removed. Track
or establish the published file’s identity using a safe mechanism, and remove it
only if the path still refers to that file; preserve peer replacements and avoid
treating a failed read as proof that cleanup is safe.
- Around line 588-604: Update _copyTargetMode to propagate stat and chmod
failures so the write is rejected rather than proceeding with the staged file’s
mode; allow a genuinely absent target to proceed without copying a mode. Update
the failure tests to expect rejection and verify the existing file remains
unchanged.

Failed pre-merge checks:
- Regression Evidence:
Add an MCP call-site test with provider `cwd` unavailable. Mock
`getWorkspacePath()` to return a distinct path and assert that the project write
passes it as `confineTo`. Retain the explicit-`cwd` and global-write tests.
- Security Boundaries:
Reject unapproved symlink destinations for credential-bearing exports. For
confined MCP writes, use handle-relative, no-follow staging and publication, or
fail closed when those guarantees are unavailable. Add regression tests for both
paths, including transient exposure during an ancestor swap.
- Persistence Integrity:
Make escape rollback identity-safe, or leave the file intact when safe removal
cannot be guaranteed and report `ConfinedPathEscapeError`. Add a regression test
that changes the file between the final validation and unlink.
- Lifecycle Resource Cleanup:
Ensure confinement recheck errors cannot bypass safe staged-file cleanup and
backup recovery. Add regression tests for recheck failures after staging and
after backup creation. Track failed `safeWriteText` backup deletions for later
cleanup, and test that cleanup.

Restrict Windows staging access before writing content.
When this internal helper replaces a file with a restrictive DACL under a broader directory, another principal can read the staged content before restoration, even if the write succeeds. Restrict staging access before writing and retain that protection through publication.

Keep a writable handle for the flush.
For a read-only target, copying its mode makes the subsequent "r+" open fail on POSIX. The write then succeeds without flushing the staged content, increasing data-loss risk after a system crash. Open a writable handle before copying the mode and sync through it before rename.

Update the safe-write flow around _copyTargetMode to retain a writable handle
for the staged file before applying the target’s mode, since the copied
read-only permissions can prevent a later "r+" open. Use that handle to sync the
staged content before rename, preserving the existing rename flow.

On Windows, a settings symlink can point to a file with a more restrictive DACL than its parent directory. The staged file inherits the broader access, and the rename publishes it over the referent. MCP settings can contain credentials. Apply equivalent restrictions before writing staged bytes, and refuse the write if preservation fails.

Failed pre-merge checks:
- Regression Evidence:
Add an MCP call-site test with provider `cwd` unavailable. Mock
`getWorkspacePath()` to return a distinct path and assert that the project write
passes that path as `confineTo`. Retain the explicit-`cwd` and global-write
tests.
Make escape rollback safe against concurrent replacement, or leave the file
intact and report `ConfinedPathEscapeError` when safe removal cannot be
guaranteed. Add a regression test that replaces the file between the final stat
and unlink.
- Lifecycle Resource Cleanup:
Ensure confinement recheck errors cannot bypass staged-file cleanup or safe
backup recovery. Add regression tests for failures after staging and backup
creation. Track failed `safeWriteText` backup deletions for later cleanup and
test that cleanup.

Learning: In src/services/file-safety/safeWriteText.ts, safeWriteText intentionally retains the backup when backup:true and the commit rename succeeds but parent-directory fsync fails with PostCommitDurabilityError. The backup remains available for recovery; it must not be deleted on this error path or renamed over the committed target. Staging-file and staging-directory cleanup still applies. Retention does not itself guarantee crash durability.

Propagate unexpected lock-key resolution errors.
If access to a symlink’s parent changes during lock acquisition, resolveLockKey can return the link path instead of its referent. The repeated checks can accept that same wrong key, allowing concurrent safeWriteJson merges to lose an update. Propagate unexpected resolution and readlink errors while preserving dangling-link handling.

Update resolveLockKey so unexpected resolution and readlink errors propagate
instead of falling back to the link path and allowing repeated checks to accept
an incorrect lock key. Preserve the existing handling that permits a genuinely
absent path and rejects dangling symlinks.

This PR makes the read side honest about what it saw. Each read brackets itself with a bigint
fs.statpair and records an observation of the target only when both tokens match - so a file that changed underneath the read is never recorded as fully seen - and the record says whether the view was complete.

Description
What this PR changes:
ReadFileToolbrackets each read with a bigintfs.statpair and observes the target only when both tokens match, recordingcompleteso a slice, truncated, or lossy view never authorizes a full-file replacement. A stat failure leaves the target unobserved and never fails the read.indentation-readerseparates "lines clipped in this view" from "lines omitted from this view"; the native and legacy read paths report the two notices independently.Taskowns a per-instanceObservationRegistry;Task.disposeOnce()retires it so a read that resumes after disposal cannot repopulate it, and both read paths skip the post-read stat and observation work oncetask.abortis set.confineTo(the provider cwd, falling back togetWorkspacePath()); global writes stay unconstrained by design. The unit branches are not cumulative, so each branch carrying the writer needs its own copy of this port. Why the diff looks bigger than the change: the chain is non-cumulative - this branch is based on
mainand carries its own copy of the earlier units' content, which the GitHub diff shows as context.Review focus:
