Usage normalization and streaming integration src/api/providers/openai.ts, src/eslint-suppressions.json |
OpenAiUsage supports optional and nullable usage fields. processUsageMetrics selects cache_read_input_tokens before prompt_tokens_details.cached_tokens, validates the value, and reports cache writes. O3-family streaming responses use the normalized metrics. |
Usage tracking validation src/api/providers/__tests__/openai-usage-tracking.spec.ts |
Tests cover streaming and non-streaming cache reads, precedence and fallback rules, invalid values, cache writes, and zero defaults for missing usage data. |

Explanation
Issue
#1591requires OpenAI-compatible cache hits to populate cache reads and use the existing cache-read pricing path.processUsageMetricsreadsprompt_tokens_details.cached_tokenswhencache_read_input_tokensis null or absent, while preserving the latter as authoritative. The normalized usage reaches both non-streaming responses and streaming O3 responses. Tests cover both modes, field precedence, valid counts, and invalid counts.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
-
Explanation
The changes stay within issue
#1591. The source change updates OpenAI-compatible usage normalization and routes O3 streaming usage through that normalizer so the fix applies to both request modes. The added tests cover the reported cache-read behavior and its input validation. The ESLint suppression count supports the typing change. No unrelated product behavior is demonstrated.

Explanation
PASS — Focused provider-level tests cover the changed usage behavior.
openai-usage-tracking.spec.tsexercises OpenAI-compatible nested cache reads in streaming and non-streaming requests,gpt-4ando3-mini, precedence and null/absent fallback, invalid values, integer bounds, proxy counts above prompt tokens, cache-write preservation, and missing counters. The O3 streaming path now usesprocessUsageMetrics, and its cache-read behavior is directly tested. No UI change requires a Playwright snapshot.
Full details: Security Boundaries
-
Explanation
No concrete security-boundary violation is introduced. The changed path only normalizes provider-reported usage counters. The new nested cache-read value requires a finite, non-negative integer and cannot exceed prompt_tokens; invalid values are ignored. The code does not expose secrets or PII, execute response data, or alter tool, network, allowlist, or approval gates.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
-
Explanation
No changed persistence path exists. The PR changes OpenAI usage normalization and stream emission in
src/api/providers/openai.ts(includingprocessUsageMetricsand O3 streaming), plus tests and an ESLint count. It does not add or modify persistence writes, atomicity, rollback, await handling, or persisted defaults. The unchanged task consumer only aggregates the emitted usage fields and awaits its existing save/update calls.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
-
Explanation
No changed lifecycle path exists. The PR changes only usage normalization and routes O3 streaming usage through
processUsageMetrics; it adds no listener, watcher, timer, task, provider handle, or cancellation/disposal logic. The changed stream loop still processes each existing usage chunk and introduces no resource allocation or restart work.

This bound now applies to cache_read_input_tokens as well as cached_tokens. Could an Anthropic-style proxy send a cache_read_input_tokens value larger than prompt_tokens? That value was reported before this change and is now dropped silently. Should the <= inputTokens check apply only to the cached_tokens fallback, or should a comment explain the drop?
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Good point. Addressed in f6eb03b: the <= prompt_tokens bound now applies only to the OpenAI prompt_tokens_details.cached_tokens fallback. When a provider sends Anthropic-style cache_read_input_tokens, it is taken as reported (still required to be a finite, nonnegative integer), since proxies may exclude cache reads from prompt_tokens. There is a comment at the check explaining this, and the precedence table now asserts a proxy cache_read_input_tokens of 101 against prompt_tokens of 100 is preserved rather than dropped.

This non-streaming test uses the default model, so it never reaches the O3-family non-streaming branch (openai.ts:473). Could we add a case with openAiModelId: "o3-mini" and openAiStreamingEnabled: false? Without it, a change to that branch would not fail any test.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Added in f6eb03b: the non-streaming test now runs for both gpt-4 and o3-mini with openAiStreamingEnabled: false, so the O3-family non-streaming branch is covered. I confirmed it guards that branch: replacing its processUsageMetrics(response.usage) call with a usage chunk that omits cache reads fails only the o3-mini case.

Do we have a test where the nested prompt_tokens_details.cached_tokens equals prompt_tokens with no cache_read_input_tokens? The "fully cached prompt" row sets cache_read_input_tokens, so it skips this check, and changing <= to < would pass every test. A case like {prompt_tokens: 100, prompt_tokens_details: {cached_tokens: 100}} expecting cacheReadTokens: 100 would pin it.

Closes: #1591
Description
OpenAI-compatible endpoints report prompt cache hits as
usage.prompt_tokens_details.cached_tokens, butOpenAiHandleronly read the Anthropic-stylecache_read_input_tokensfield. As a result, cached prompt tokens were recorded as ordinary input tokens and cost calculations used the full input rate. This change adds the OpenAI-compatible field as a fallback while preserving
cache_read_input_tokensas the authoritative value when a provider supplies it. Both streaming and non-streaming responses already use the same usage normalizer, so the fix remains localized there.Regression tests use the response shapes and asymmetric token counts from the issue to verify both request modes report
cacheReadTokenscorrectly.Test Procedure
All commands pass. The new regression assertions were also run before the implementation and failed with
cacheReadTokens: undefinedin both streaming and non-streaming modes.Pre-Submission Checklist

Additional Notes
The fallback does not perform global usage deduplication or alter token totals. It only exposes the cache-read count already returned by the endpoint so the existing OpenAI cost calculation can subtract cached tokens from full-price input.
