fix(sdk): surface the authenticate tool for a needs-auth MCP server - #2295
SDK MCP servers that need OAuth now expose mcp__<server>__authenticate, allowing the model to give the user an authorization URL. Completing sign-in stores credentials; a new SDK session then connects with them and receives the server's tools.
This implements proposal 1 of #2294, reusing the existing OAuth and XAA flows:
Initial credential reads and background completion use the originating credential environment. An open streaming query() lends its existing environment to its own auth work and drains admitted work before restoring it.
Pending attempts coordinate by native credential identity and the shared plaintext fallback entry. Cancelled or replaced attempts cannot overwrite or delete newer credentials.
A completed authenticate tool follows the SDK session root and survives an unrelated tool failure. Session close/interrupt and intentional output discard still cancel it. A small internal result-discard signal carries the executor's existing discard decision separately from sibling cancellation; existing executor cancellation policy is unchanged.
New SDK sessions retry disconnected memo entries when the existing provider finds usable saved credentials, including reordered configurations and the tested OAuth variants sharing that credential entry. Connected clients and memo promise identity remain protected.
Reviewed AGENTS.md and CONTRIBUTING.md. The follow-up from b7d7fe271c7cccc1bbe74c8f7b1271225358b5e1 addresses the four verified startup-cache, disconnected-cache, session-ownership and test-isolation findings. It preserves the existing credential layout, query mutex, SDK scheduling and CLI reconnect behavior.
Impact
SDK users: a needs-auth server has a model-driven sign-in path. Guidance explicitly requires a new session for its real tools. No new public SDK method or host-facing status/reconnect API is introduced.
Shared authentication behavior: the complete PR also makes OAuth/XAA cancellation cover discovery, token-exchange response bodies and late writes. Interactive CLI MCP sign-ins use the existing 30-second per-request timeout and OAuth error normalization.
Maintainers: existing discovery, PKCE, loopback listeners and credential backends are reused. The internal executor adapter distinguishes discarded results from sibling failures without changing either policy. The refresh-test fixture snapshots real cache exports so it restores them correctly in shared-process runs.
Testing
Followed Validation, including applicable lint/static/type checks and regressions.
Validation scope: full local preflight selected for the executor/context integration. The unchanged frozen-lock dependency installation is reused from the prior validated revision b7d7fe271c7cccc1bbe74c8f7b1271225358b5e1; no dependency or build configuration changed.
Before/after evidence: new tests fail on the starting head for native-cache startup, both stale-config variants and sibling cancellation. A compound sibling-error → discard regression also exposed and closed an intermediate repair defect. Existing close, replacement, credential-write and connected-client controls remain intact.

Focused independent concurrency review identified the compound discard issue; controller source review and the actual-executor regression verified its correction. All four admitted findings and the repair-caused regression are resolved in this candidate.
Test boundaries: real local OAuth/MCP exchanges and actual executor orchestration, with provider engine work and native vault I/O simulated. Native cache reads and plaintext fallback regressions use their real implementations. No live browser, external IdP, native OS vault or local Windows execution. Node 26 and platform validation remain with current-head CI.
CI follow-up:unit shard 2, attempt 1 failed in the unchanged aimlapiScrape.test.ts queued-poll assertion: expected https://tools.aimlapi.com/v1/tools/runs/run%207, received https://ads.gitlawb.com/api/ads/confirm. The earlier gitlawbEarn.test.ts success case leaves a four-second confirmation timer alive after restoring global fetch/environment. Confirmed on current target d0b464eb5f7385df9c238b8ad3808f84722443ab: a source snapshot running those two existing files, with only a probe-time 3.8-second inter-file delay to align the timer, produces the identical assertion failure (24 pass / 1 fail). The ads implementation, ads test and WebFetch implementation/test are unchanged by this PR. This is a verified pre-existing shared-process test-isolation failure under CONTRIBUTING's exception; the unrelated test fix is excluded from this MCP PR. The failed job passed on retry on unchanged head 34169c11; the aggregate PR check also passed.
Reviewed and locally validated repair: 34169c11c83278ccbef2a744e8adede84f725673. All applicable CI checks passed on this revision, including all eight unit shards and the aggregate PR check. CodeRabbit approved this exact revision on 2026-10-30 at 18:30 UTC with no actionable findings; all review threads are resolved. Ready for final maintainer review. The earlier maintainer changes-requested review and approval requirements still need resolution before merge.

New Features
MCP servers that require authentication now provide a sign-in tool.
Sign-in guidance clarifies whether tools are available in the current session or require a new one.
When a new session is required, sign-in saves credentials without reconnecting the server or changing the current session.
Bug Fixes
Cancelled or superseded sign-in attempts no longer save credentials, even when responses are still being received.
Credentials are saved to the configuration associated with the original sign-in attempt.
Re-authentication preserves connected clients, and stale, unavailable server results no longer expose unusable tools.

The unbounded-wait claim is refuted.
captureCredentialScope uses runInOriginEnv while the query still owns its environment. After that owner declines, it acquires the mutex and runs under the captured environment instead. Tracked work therefore cannot keep using a restored environment.
The OAuth and XAA requests also have 30-second timeouts and caller abort signals. Cleanup may wait for an active request, but the supplied code does not establish an indefinite wait. The proposed race could restore the environment while borrowed work still runs.
Walkthrough
When an MCP server needs authentication, the SDK returns an authentication tool. Sign-in attempts support session cancellation and can complete without reconnecting the server or updating app state. OAuth flows keep cancellation active through response-body reads and scope credential operations to the originating configuration.
The SDK captures the turn environment for credential operations. Scoped work uses the originating query environment when available, or applies and restores the captured environment under the environment mutex.

OAuth and IdP requests remain cancellable while response bodies are read. Credential operations check cancellation and can use the captured scope. Tests cover cancellation, queued writes, and storage isolation.
Return a session-bound authentication tool src/tools/McpAuthTool/McpAuthTool.ts, src/entrypoints/sdk/permissions.ts, src/Tool.ts, src/services/tools/StreamingToolExecutor.ts
The SDK returns an authentication tool for needs-auth clients. Sign-in attempts are session-bound when current-context tools are unavailable. Completion clears relevant caches without reconnecting in that context. Tool-result cancellation is tracked separately from sibling-tool cancellation.

The previously reported risk of an older sign-in overwriting newer credentials is addressed at the reviewed head. No actionable merge-blocking risk remains in the supplied evidence.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 1ce88
Sign-in becomes available to embedded sessions, but pending authorization is not cancelled when a session closes, and overlapping sign-ins can modify shared credentials. Existing callback protections limit exposure, but authorization lifecycle and ownership remain material concerns.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · inferred: The newly exposed authenticate tool creates a private abort controller that is not connected to SDK interruption or close. After returning the authorization URL, its background flow can still accept a valid callback, persist credentials, and reconnect after the originating session closes. SDK close aborts session work and cleans registered connected clients, but does not own this pending flow or the client subsequently returned by its continuation. The standard callback wait is bounded by five minutes and protected by OAuth state validation; those controls do not provide session-scoped cancellation.
Medium · security · inferred: Repeated tool calls or independent SDK sessions can start overlapping authorization flows for the same shared credential key. Standard OAuth clears that entry before authorization and later writes the resulting tokens without an attempt-generation ownership check in the inspected path. One attempt can therefore erase another attempt's credentials or overwrite its selected account on late completion. The key separates differently configured servers, but not sessions using identical configurations. Declaring the tool non-concurrency-safe does not serialize background flows after the tool has returned its URL. This mechanism predates the PR; the SDK entry path newly exposes it.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The evidenced shared-state exposure concerns sessions using the same credential store and identical server identity/configuration. Differently named or differently configured servers receive different credential keys; broader tenant or deployment isolation was not established.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — Once execution is permitted, a model can initiate or repeat sign-in for a configured needs-auth server. Closing the session does not cancel the captured background flow, and overlapping standard flows can clear or replace the shared credential entry. These are lifecycle and identity-ownership risks, not an established arbitrary-target or OAuth-state bypass.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The tool ignores model input and uses its captured server configuration. SDK construction supplies a host permission wrapper with a deny-default fallback. Standard OAuth generates random state, validates callback state, and binds its callback listener to loopback. These controls constrain target selection and callback acceptance, but do not establish ownership of background authorization across session termination.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The existing CLI control-request authentication handler tracks active flows, aborts a previous same-server attempt, and removes tracking only when completion still belongs to that controller. The newly reused pseudo-tool instead creates an untracked controller per invocation. The CLI handler provides useful ownership counterevidence, but its coordination is not inherited merely by reusing the OAuth function.

Explanation
No hidden policy change found. The product decision is explicit in the PR: SDK needs-auth MCP servers expose mcp__<server>__authenticate, and the tool directs users to start a new session. The diff implements this in connectSdkMcpServers and McpAuthTool with realToolsInCurrentContext: false. Credential-scope, cancellation, and storage changes are also described in the PR. The existing auth tool's automatic checkPermissions allow behavior is unchanged from the base revision. The diff adds no new telemetry event, permission mode, routing default, or unrelated network destination; OAuth network changes preserve the existing flow and add cancellation/body buffering.

Address review on Twigpine#2295. createMcpAuthTool's text promised that a
needs-auth server's real tools "become available automatically" once
the user authorizes. That is true on the CLI path, where the background
continuation swaps them into appState.mcp.tools, but not on the SDK
path: a v2 session connects its MCP servers once (v2.ts, self.mcpConnected)
and never re-reads the tool pool, so the model would look for tools the
session cannot offer.
Add an optional realToolsInCurrentContext to createMcpAuthTool (default
true, CLI unchanged) and pass false from connectSdkMcpServers, so the SDK
tool tells the model to start a new session. The test asserts the wording.
Refs Twigpine#2294
Review follow-up — pushed as ff765c37, rebased onto main5a1fbe03.
Wording (major): fixed. Agreed — the text promised that a needs-auth server's real tools "become available automatically", which is only true where appState feeds the tool pool (the CLI). A v2 session connects its MCP servers once (v2.ts, self.mcpConnected) and never re-reads the pool, so the model could look for tools the session cannot offer. createMcpAuthTool now takes an optional realToolsInCurrentContext (default true, CLI unchanged) and connectSdkMcpServers passes false, so the SDK tool tells the model to start a new session. The test asserts that wording.
Invoke the tool and assert auth_url (trivial): declined, with reason. Calling the tool starts performMCPOAuthFlow for real: it opens the loopback listener and races the authorization URL against the flow's completion. The stand-in server in this test never issues a token, so the flow cannot complete, and call() owns its AbortController internally — there is no handle from which the test could abort it. A test that called the tool would assert the URL and then leave a pending flow and an open listener behind. What this branch changes is that the tool is created at all for a needs-auth client; the assertions on its name and description cover exactly that. Exercising the full flow needs a stand-in that completes the callback and belongs with a flow test, not here.

I found two issues that need to be addressed before this is ready.
Merge readiness
Rebase onto current main and validate the resolved branch. The merge base is ae9b3192; captured main is 94ebcff6, 130 commits newer. A read-only merge comparison found no textual conflicts, but SDK hooks, the MCP SDK, toolchain and CI have advanced.
GitHub reports MERGEABLE / BLOCKED with CHANGES_REQUESTED. All captured checks pass, including required CodeQL checks. The active rules require an approving review and last-push approval.
The previous automatic-availability wording request is addressed across description/prompt, URL result and silent result. The CodeRabbit request to exercise the tool is unaddressed; the execution cases below explain why that coverage matters. The validation-exception request now has reproduction details in the PR body and green CI.
💥 What fails: Start the returned authenticate tool, receive its URL, then close the SDK session. The actual OAuth callback listener continues accepting callbacks after close; a local probe confirmed this using real SDKSession.close and a state-matching callback. Successful authorization also unconditionally reconnects, whether completion happens before or after close. That replacement client is outside the engine's cleanup list, so close never cleans it. Controlled completion probes confirmed one reconnect and zero cleanup in both orderings.
🔎 Root cause: The new SDK route reuses CLI-owned background work without adapting ownership. The tool creates a private AbortController instead of observing the SDK context controller, and its continuation updates appState rather than the SDK engine's client registry. The new option changes only guidance:
“Close the session and release resources.” — SDKSession.close, v2.ts:156.
The existing SDK session documentation also requires close to prevent memory leaks. This contract concerns cleanup, independently of proposal 2's live tool refresh.
🏷️ Attribution: PR-activated at the new needs-auth SDK branch. At both merge base ae9b3192 and captured target 94ebcff6, this same SDK path returns no tool and cannot start this detached lifecycle. The problematic CLI continuation predates the PR; this branch introduces its reachability under SDK cleanup.
📌 In this PR:
Changed surface / affected consumer
Pending auth on close
Auth completion / cleanup
New common connector branch, consumed by query() and v2
Private OAuth signal is not aborted by SDK close
Opens a client absent from engine cleanup
Factory's new SDK option
Changes copy only
Does not prevent unused CLI reconnect
New real-server regression test
Never calls the tool
Does not exercise completion or close
Description/prompt, URL result and silent-result copy
Correctly require a new session
No live refresh implementation is required
🔒 Unchanged on main: CLI cached/fresh needs-auth callers use the factory's default behavior. SDK close cleans engine-registered connected clients; OAuth already supports callback cleanup through its abort signal. Do not rebuild those contracts.
🔧 Required correction: Make SDK-mode auth follow its owning cancellation signal and ensure completion cannot leave an unowned connected client. Because this mode explicitly requires a new session, suppressing its unused CLI reconnect is one bounded option. Cover pending close and successful completion before/after close; shared cases can cover both SDK callers.
🛠️ Author fix: Close the ownership gap across the common SDK branch, factory's SDK mode and regression evidence in one pass. Changing only the option's wording or only the first cited line will not close the pending/completed resource lifecycle. Preserve CLI behavior.
🚫 Out of scope: A new public authentication API, proposal 2's in-session tool refresh, per-session account partitioning, or an OAuth/storage/framework redesign.
🟡 P2 — Isolate credential storage in the new real-server test
💥 What fails: The first test performs real discovery and dynamic client registration, which writes client information and discovery state through getSecureStorage before returning needs-auth. On macOS Keychain or Linux Secret Service, those records are outside the temporary directory and survive its deletion. With OPENCLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR set, native service naming prioritizes that environment variable over the test override, so the test can write the operator's normal credential namespace.
The new test, executed without modifications, passed against a contained fake secret-tool while recording two native store writes, no clear, and a retained gated client registration after teardown. A separate real-helper probe confirmed the native service name was identical before and after applying the temporary config override.
🔎 Root cause: Setup isolates the file-based config path, while teardown assumes all registration effects are files under that path. It neither selects an isolated credential backend nor restores/removes its native-store effects.
📜 Stated contract:
“Somewhere disposable, so this touches neither the developer's own store nor the next test.” — new test comment, lines 119–120.
🏷️ Attribution: PR-introduced. This real-registration test does not exist at merge base ae9b3192 or target 94ebcff6. The backend selection and environment precedence are existing behavior newly exercised by this test.
📌 In this PR:
Changed test surface
Result
beforeEach config-home override
Isolates files; does not override ambient native credential service
First test's discovery/registration
Persists client ID/secret and discovery data without issuing a token
afterEach restore and directory removal
Leaves native credential records behind
Second test's HTTP 500 control
Does not require credential persistence; preserve this negative control
🔒 Unchanged on main: Native storage intentionally uses OS vaults and config-scoped service names. Ordinary Windows DPAPI writes and plaintext fallback are inside the temporary config directory; they are not evidence of this native-vault leak.
🔧 Required correction: Select isolated credential storage for this test's real discovery/registration path and ensure teardown removes/restores its effects even when OPENCLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR is present. A contained storage double is sufficient; the real local MCP/OAuth discovery boundary can remain exercised.
🛠️ Author fix: Correct setup, registration storage and teardown together, with evidence that the operator namespace is untouched and no native record survives. Do not patch only the directory-removal line or remove the meaningful real-server assertions.
🚫 Out of scope: Redesigning getSecureStorage, native service naming, credential precedence, or unrelated tests.
Validation and value
Reviewer validation: frozen-lockfile install; SDK + MCP grouping, 213 passed / 0 failed across 20 files; focused contained-native-store test, 2 passed; real local OAuth/SDK-close probes; controlled completion/cleanup probes; static changed-type/consumer inspection; intent scan with no suspicious additions. Sandbox-only registry/listen failures were resolved by escalation. Root typecheck/build and CI's bun run check are green in captured checks; those commands were not rerun locally. Local tests used Bun 1.4.4.
The feature has concrete value for model-driven SDK sign-in and reuses existing protocol code. No duplicate implementation was found: merged #2093 handles token refresh, merged #2250 handles request timeout cancellation, and open #2268 concerns v2 environment options. Keep the repair scoped to SDK auth ownership and test isolation.
An embedder hands mcpServers to a v2 session, a server answers 401, and
system:init reports needs-auth. That is where it ended: connectSdkMcpServers
kept tools only for a connected client, so the host was told the server needs
authentication and given nothing that could act on it. The interactive CLI's
/mcp is not available to an embedder.
The CLI path already attaches the authenticate pseudo-tool for exactly this
case (getMcpToolsCommandsAndResources). This adds the same branch to the SDK
path, with the same expression: the model is told the server exists, calls
mcp__<server>__authenticate, and receives a URL to hand the user.
Nothing about discovery, PKCE, the loopback listener or token storage changes.
The test uses a real local server rather than a stub of connectToServer,
because needs-auth is not decided by the 401 alone: the MCP SDK walks RFC 9728
resource metadata, RFC 8414 authorization-server metadata and dynamic client
registration first, and only then reports that a redirect is needed. A stub
would assert our guess about that chain instead of the behaviour.

The authenticate tool returned to an SDK session reused the CLI's
background flow as-is: a private AbortController nothing aborted, and a
reconnect on completion that updates appState. Closing the session left
the OAuth callback listener running, and a completed sign-in opened a
client outside the engine's cleanup list.
With realToolsInCurrentContext: false the flow now listens to the
calling context's abort signal, which descends from the root the SDK's
close() and interrupt() abort, and completion only stores the tokens and
clears the needs-auth cache so a new session connects. CLI behavior is
unchanged.
The real-server test now keeps credentials in an in-memory store instead
of the OS vault, whose service name follows OPENCLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR ahead
of the test override, and calls the tool: it asserts the sign-in URL,
that closing stops the callback listener, and that a completed sign-in
stores tokens without reconnecting.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Each call of the SDK authenticate tool started an untracked OAuth flow.
Every flow clears the server's stored entry and registers its own client
there, so after a second call the first flow kept its callback listener
and, if the user opened the first link, exchanged that client's code
with the second client's credentials: the browser showed success, the
authorization server refused the exchange, and no tokens were stored.
The tool now keeps the session's pending attempt per server, as the CLI's
mcp_authenticate handler does: a newer call aborts the older attempt, the
attempt is still aborted by the session's controller, and tracking is
released only by its owner when it settles. The CLI path is unchanged.
The stand-in authorization server now registers a distinct client per
attempt and accepts a code only from the client it was issued to.

This covers the 2026-10-27 maintainer review and the retained concerns in CodeRabbit's Security Architecture Review, which is labelled "up to 1ce88" and therefore predates both fix commits.
1. Pending SDK sign-in outlived close(), and completion reconnected outside engine cleanup. Fixed in 0719eb9.
Root cause: the tool used a private AbortController that nothing aborted, and its CLI continuation (reconnectMcpServerImpl + setAppState) ran in SDK mode too.
Fix: in SDK mode the attempt now follows the calling context's controller. That controller descends from the root aborted by the SDK close()/interrupt() (v2.ts/query.ts → engine.interrupt → requestAbort(root)). Completion stores the tokens and clears the needs-auth cache without reconnecting.
Tests: close stops the callback listener, and completion makes no reconnect and no setAppState call. Each is mutation-checked.
2. Credential writes escaped the test's temporary config. Fixed in 0719eb9.
Root cause: getSecureStorage selects the OS vault, and its service name follows OPENCLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR ahead of the test override.
Fix: the test now uses an in-memory store, swapped in before the code under test is imported and restored in afterAll.
Evidence: with a contained fake secret-tool on PATH, the original test made 2 native store writes and left the record behind. It now makes 0 native calls.
3. Overlapping attempts for the same credential key (CodeRabbit, retained concern 2).
Repeated calls within one SDK session: fixed in de1bba0.
Trace: every attempt clears the server's stored entry and registers its own client there (clearServerTokensFromSecureStorage → DCR → saveClientInformation). After a second call, the first attempt kept its listener. If the user opened the first link, ClaudeAuthProvider.clientInformation() returned the second client for a code issued to the first.
Reproduced against a stand-in that binds codes to the issuing client: the browser got "Authentication Successful" (200), both exchange attempts were refused (invalid_grant), and no tokens were stored.
Fix: the tool keeps the session's pending attempt for its server, mirroring cli/print.tsmcp_authenticate. A newer call aborts the older attempt, the session's controller still aborts it, and only its owner clears the tracking when it settles. Mutation-checked.
Independent sessions with identical server config: declined as out of scope. They share one per-server credential key, which is the existing credential design. Separating them is per-session account partitioning, which the maintainer review explicitly listed as out of scope.
The CLI pseudo-tool's own repeated calls: left unchanged. This behavior predates the PR, and the review asked to preserve CLI behavior.
CodeRabbit thread r4312642226 (invoke the tool and assert auth_url): addressed and resolved.
Validation:
0719eb9: full bun run check, typecheck, type-tests, both launcher checks and the intent scan. The only failure was scripts/run-tests.test.ts, which also fails on clean mainf235c83 locally while CI is green for that SHA. Details are in the PR description.
de1bba0, run as a follow-up per CONTRIBUTING.md under Node 24.22.2: check:static, typecheck:fast, typecheck:type-tests, node bin/openclaude --version and the NODE_DISABLE_COMPILE_CACHE=1 variant, and security:pr-scan all passed. bun run test ./src/entrypoints/sdk ./src/services/mcp ./src/tools/McpAuthTool: 253 pass, 0 fail. The new test file passed 5 consecutive runs.

performMCPOAuthFlow's abort signal stopped governing the attempt once the
browser came back: the callback listener removes its abort handler when
the code arrives, and the code exchange that follows runs on the SDK's
own fetch. A flow aborted mid-exchange still reached the SDK's writes.
After de1bba0 replaced a pending SDK sign-in, a late grant for the old
attempt put its tokens and client registration over the new sign-in's
entry, and a late invalid_grant made the SDK invalidate the stored
tokens, which by then were the new sign-in's.
The flow now hands its signal to its ClaudeAuthProvider, whose storage
writes (client information, tokens, discovery state, invalidation)
throw AuthenticationCancelledError once it has aborted. Providers built
without a signal, such as connection and refresh, are unchanged. The
same holds for CLI callers that abort a flow (mcp_authenticate replacing
an older flow, the /mcp menus on cancel): a cancelled flow no longer
persists anything.
The SDK test harness now owns every session it opens and aborts them in
teardown, so a failing test cannot leave a callback listener open, and
covers a replaced attempt whose exchange answers late with a grant and
with a refusal.

mcpNeedsAuth.test.ts captured the live module namespace of secureStorage
before swapping in its memory store, and handed that namespace back to
mock.module in afterAll. Bun rewrites a namespace's bindings when the
module is mocked, so the "restore" re-registered the memory store, and
every test file after it in the shared process read and wrote the cleared
test backend instead of the real one.
Capture a copy of the exports, as the file already does for auth.js and
client.js, so teardown restores the module that existed before the mock.

… is cancelled
8737b71 put the consent flow's metadata, registration and code exchange
under the flow's signal, but three discovery requests of the same flow
still ran on their own 30-second timeout: the IdP's OIDC discovery before
the browser login, the IdP's discovery for the RFC 8693 exchange, and the
configured-metadata-URL fetch ClaudeAuthProvider.discoveryState makes
when the MCP SDK calls it without a signal. Closing or interrupting an
SDK session while one of those was still arriving left the request open
and the sign-in — and the authenticate tool call behind it — pending
until the server answered or the timeout fired.
discoverOidc already takes a signal; both interactive callers now pass
the flow's, and a cancel during the exchange's discovery surfaces as
AuthenticationCancelledError like its siblings. discoveryState falls back
to the provider's flow signal when the SDK supplies none; providers built
without one are unchanged.
Tests hold each of the three responses after its headers, cancel, and
assert the request's signal aborted and the sign-in settled.

…h result
The SDK path's success branch stored the tokens and told the model to
start a new session, but the next session connects through
connectToServer, which memoizes its result by server name and config.
The needs-auth result from the first session was handed back as-is, so
the new session got the authenticate tool again despite a valid stored
token. The CLI never hit this: its success path goes through
reconnectMcpServerImpl, which evicts the entry before reconnecting.
Evict the entry with the existing clearServerCache when the SDK sign-in
completes — only when it is cached, since clearing an absent key would
open a client first — and keep the no-reconnect behaviour otherwise.
The test's stand-in server now answers MCP with the token it issued, and
a test signs in, closes the session, connects again with the same config
and expects the server's real tool.

…arted in
An SDK session applies its `env` for the turn and restores the process's
own afterwards (v2.ts applySessionEnv, query.ts), while the credential
store — getSecureStorage and the mcp-needs-auth cache — is chosen from
OPENCLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR at each read and write. The authenticate tool
returns its URL inside the turn and the flow finishes when the user is
back from the browser, usually after that turn has ended or while another
session's turn has applied its own variables. The exchange then read its
client, stored its tokens and dropped its cache entry in whichever store
the process had at that moment: with dynamic registration the client was
missing there and the exchange failed; with a configured client the token
landed in the wrong store and the originating one stayed signed out.
The flow now carries a CredentialScope for the work that follows its
external waits: the consent flow's code exchange, the XAA token write,
the IdP id_token cache write and the tool's cache invalidation. The SDK
supplies a scope that re-applies the turn's OPENCLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR under
the env mutex the turns hold, so a sign-in finishing during another
session's turn waits for that turn rather than writing under its
variables, and the native stores' process-wide read cache is dropped on
the way in and out. A scope is never entered while the caller is still
awaiting the flow — the silent XAA path with a cached id_token — since a
turn holding the mutex would wait on itself. The CLI, whose environment
does not change, supplies none and behaves as before.
Tests keep one memory store per OPENCLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR, restore the
process's environment after handing out the URL, and expect the tokens
and the dropped cache entry in the originating store, with a registered
and with a configured client; one holds the env mutex as another turn
would and expects the exchange to wait for it; an XAA test shows the
id_token and token writes go through the scope. The file no longer holds
the shared mutation lock, which is that mutex.

The claim that CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR can select the credential namespace is contradicted by the resolver code. The scoped work reads only OPENCLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR, so the comment's premise and its conditional concern do not hold.
The comment's cross-store concern depends on CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR selecting the secure-storage or config-home namespace. Both the secure-storage service name and the MCP auth cache path resolve through getClaudeConfigHomeDir(), and that resolver reads only OPENCLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR. A session that sets only CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR therefore does not change the store that captureCredentialScope scopes. The comment's own condition ("if the resolver reads only OPENCLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR") is met, so no non-blocking note remains.
The credential scope put back only OPENCLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR, but the store a
sign-in reads and writes is chosen from more of the environment than that:
the native vault entry is named by getSecureStorageServiceName, whose
service name also carries the OAuth namespace (CLAUDE_CODE_CUSTOM_OAUTH_URL,
or USER_TYPE with USE_LOCAL_OAUTH / USE_STAGING_OAUTH), and its account is
getUsername (USER); the default config home follows the home directory. A
session whose env changed any of these finished its sign-in in the
process's own vault entry once the turn had restored the environment: with
a registered client the exchange could not find it, and with a configured
client the tokens landed in another account and the originating session
stayed signed out. The tool's replacement key already used service and
account; only the resumption did not.
The scope now captures the whole of the turn's environment when the tool
is called — what it had set and what it had removed — and re-applies it
for the resumed work, under the same env mutex, with the native read cache
dropped on the way in and out as before, then restores every variable it
changed, newest first, so a variable reached under two spellings (one
variable on Windows) ends as it began. Re-applying the environment the flow started in, as the
CredentialScope contract describes, rather than a hand-picked part of it,
keeps the resumption in step with whatever the store's helpers read.
The needs-auth test's memory store is now keyed as the real backends key
theirs, by service name and account, and the original-store regression
runs for the config home, the vault account and the OAuth namespace, each
with a registered and a configured client. Comments describing the scope
as a single variable now describe the environment.

…the browser
performMCPXaaAuth decided whether the writes after acquisition — the AS
tokens, or dropping an id_token the IdP rejected — needed the credential
scope from idTokenCacheHit, a peek at the id_token cache taken for
analytics before acquireIdpIdToken reads the cache again. A token that
crosses the 60-second expiry buffer between the two reads is a hit to the
peek and a miss to acquisition, which then sends the user to the IdP and
hands the SDK tool its URL; the turn ends while the user is away. The flow
then skipped the scope: the AS tokens were stored, or the cached id_token
cleared, in whichever store the process had by then, while the IdP login
itself cached its id_token in the originating one.
The decision now comes from what acquisition did: performMCPXaaAuth wraps
onAuthorizationUrl and enters the scope only when a login URL was handed
out, which is also exactly when the caller stops awaiting the flow. A
silent acquisition from the cache still writes as it is, so the SDK turn
that holds the env mutex never waits on itself. idTokenCacheHit stays for
analytics only; expiry rules and the CLI path are unchanged.
Tests cross the expiry buffer between the peek and acquisition and expect
the AS tokens stored, or the rejected id_token dropped, in the originating
store with no read or write of the ambient one. A silent sign-in must
never enter its scope, whether the id_token was cached before the peek or
by another sign-in between the peek and acquisition — the latter is the
case the cache-hit test sent into the scope, where an SDK turn holding the
env mutex would wait on itself.

The expiry-transition test freezes Date.now so the cached id_token crosses
its buffer between the flow's peek and acquisition. waitFor computed its
deadline from Date.now, and the flow's settlement was awaited unbounded,
so a regression — no login URL, or a credential scope that never settles
— hung the test until Bun's per-test timeout, and the finally that
restores Date.now never ran for the tests after it (CodeRabbit
r4424916524).
waitFor now measures its deadline with performance.now, which a mocked
Date.now does not stop, and the test awaits the flow through settlesSoon,
whose message no longer assumes a cancellation. Both stalls now fail in
about two seconds with their own message.

Abort and drain the OAuth flow when the wait fails.
waitFor can throw before settlesSoon, but this test passes no abort signal. The XAA flow can then install an unref'ed callback server and remain pending for up to five minutes after the test enters finally. Pass an abort signal and await the settled flow during cleanup.

The expiry-transition test started its flow without an abort signal, so
a failure before the callback (no login URL observed) left the IdP
callback listener bound and the flow pending until the login timeout
(CodeRabbit review on 4177b8b). It now gives the flow a session
controller, as the queued XAA test does, and in its cleanup restores the
clock, aborts the flow and waits for it to settle — bounded by
settlesSoon, so a flow that cannot settle keeps the failure that found
it.

Re CodeRabbit review on 4177b8b, outside-diff item "Abort and drain the OAuth flow when the wait fails" (auth.refreshLock.test.ts 2496-2547): fixed in d9ce0b3.
The expiry-transition test now gives its flow a session AbortController, as the queued XAA test already does. Its cleanup:
restores Date.now;
aborts the flow, which closes the IdP callback listener and clears its 5-minute timer;
drains the settled promise, bounded by settlesSoon, so a flow that cannot settle keeps the original failure.
Mutation checks:
A login URL that is never observed fails with "Timed out waiting for test state", and the flow is settled after cleanup.
A credential scope that never settles fails with "flow still pending after 2s" in about 4 s.
The inline settlesSoon fake-timer suggestion is declined with evidence in its thread.

Merge readiness
GitHub reports MERGEABLE / BLOCKED, with review decision CHANGES_REQUESTED. The earlier maintainer changes-requested review needs disposition, and the branch rules require one approving review plus last-push approval. CodeRabbit approved this exact revision; all 13 review threads are resolved.
All applicable current-head CI checks pass, including the eight unit shards, static/build/smoke, type checks, dedicated tests, Node 24.22.1/26 launcher checks, required aggregate checks, and CodeQL. Web/platform jobs skipped by their filters are not failures.
Captured and refreshed main is d0b464eb, six commits beyond merge base f235c835. A read-only merge comparison found no textual conflicts, direct changed-file overlap, or package/version drift. No routine rebase is requested solely because main advanced.
Findings
None verified after the primary full review, two waves of two independent blind searches, the separate coverage-map search, candidate reconciliation, and intent/base/target audit.
The previous session-cleanup, unused reconnect, credential-isolation, replacement, late-write, queued-cancellation, response-body cancellation and native-cache concerns are addressed on this head. I verified their current code paths and regressions, including the resolved automated-review requests. The declined host-permission-bypass concern does not match the actual SDK permission route: the external host callback remains in the execution path. The buffered-fetch extraction suggestion remains an optional refactor, as documented in the PR discussion.
Reviewed behavior
The change implements proposal 1 of issue #2294: model-driven SDK sign-in through the existing OAuth tool. Proposal 2's public authentication API, status events and live tool refresh remain separate work.
Changed lifecycle / mutation
Ordering and effect verified
Auth attempt creation/replacement
Session-local ownership plus native service/account/server and shared plaintext-home aliases; old attempt aborts, cleanup removes only aliases it owns
OAuth registration and token persistence
Flow cancellation checked before provider writes; callback exchange resumes in originating credential environment; direct invalid-client cleanup rechecks after scope acquisition
Initial cache invalidation and scoped reads/writes
Config-dir, USER, namespace, actual native-cache read simulations
Origin-store comments; no new identity rendering
Shared plaintext fallback home
Existing config-home/fallback backend
Overlapping attempts replace one another across native identity changes
Real fallback file with unavailable native backend
Internal options explain origin ownership
Root/result/tool signals and credential scope
Query/v2 and executor adapters
Background lifetime, scoped persistence and cleanup
Real query and executor orchestration
Consistent new-session guidance
Existing config validation, token schemas, backend layout and env-less SDK concurrency policy are preserved. Existing callback validators remain the malformed-input boundary; this PR does not introduce a new HTTP/CLI parser.
Validation
Frozen-lockfile dependency install succeeded; no tracked checkout changes.
Focused changed tests plus executor neighbor: 110 passed. Randomized SDK/MCP/executor group, seed 4242: 314 passed across 24 files. Independent searches additionally ran 123, 73, and 9 passing test groups, including a second randomized seed.
ESLint/static checks, any budget, CLI/SDK build, smoke, external/type-declaration guards, dead-code check, fast typecheck (3,324 files), focused type assertions (11 files), intent scan and git diff --check passed. Four existing explicit-any warnings and informational dead-code configuration hints remain.
The single bun run check invocation reached this review workflow's ten-minute limit during unit shard 6. Shards 1–5 completed first; shards 6–8 then passed separately under contained Node 24.22.1 (1,628 / 1,240 / 1,537 tests). The initial run used machine-default Node 22 and had one unchanged CLI initialization test fail explicitly on the runtime floor; its exact two-test regression group passed under Node 24. All eight unit reports are accounted for: 11,748 distinct passing cases after that runtime correction. The original full command is a timeout result, not a claimed pass.
Dedicated conversation-arc (1) and context-efficiency (4) passes succeeded. Normal and compile-cache-disabled launcher checks under Node 24.22.1 both report 0.33.0.
Tests exercise real local OAuth/MCP discovery, registration, callbacks, client-bound code exchange and next-session tools. Native vault I/O and provider work are explicit doubles. No live external IdP/browser, native OS vault or Windows run is claimed. Temporary files, caches and toolchain stayed in this review's runtime tree.
Value and scope
This gives SDK embedders a usable model-driven authentication path while reusing the existing protocol implementation. The maintenance cost is the environment/cancellation integration, now covered across query and executor boundaries. Related merged refresh-coordination, v2-env, MCP-provider and SDK-packaging changes address different problems; no duplicate or superseding implementation was found. No new dependency or public API was introduced.

Summary
SDK MCP servers that need OAuth now expose
mcp__<server>__authenticate, allowing the model to give the user an authorization URL. Completing sign-in stores credentials; a new SDK session then connects with them and receives the server's tools. This implements proposal 1 of #2294, reusing the existing OAuth and XAA flows:
query()lends its existing environment to its own auth work and drains admitted work before restoring it.Reviewed
