feat(sdk): let a v2 session carry its own environment - #2268
Add SDKSessionOptions.env to persistent v2 sessions. Nonempty overrides apply after process initialization, serialize under the existing environment mutex for each turn, and restore when iteration completes, throws, returns, or unwinds after close.
Restore explicit overrides and provider-construction outputs, including original own-entry absence, native/OpenAI normalization, Gemini access-token hydration, GitHub token/Copilot-key hydration and its marker.
Invalidate OAuth, API-key-helper and AWS credential-export caches at both scope boundaries. A prewarmed ambient helper result must not supply a scoped turn, and a scoped result must not supply later ambient or scoped requests.
Return active scoped iterators on close, wait for pending engine work to unwind before restoration, and release engine/store references immediately.
Preserve @serafkul's original commits and the existing API, provider helpers, cache implementations/TTLs, mutex scheduling and transcript behavior.
The helper-cache repair is local to the new v2 boundaries. It reuses the existing epoch/promise-identity-safe invalidation functions; it adds no credential subsystem or public API.
Impact
User-facing impact: embedders can select a provider environment per persistent session without retaining its temporary environment or helper-derived authentication across completed turns.
Developer/maintainer impact: one shared scope covers create/resume/prompt. Nonempty environments serialize; env-less turns retain their existing concurrency and can observe temporary process environment values. Paused iterators and permission callbacks retain the documented nested-turn deadlock constraints. close() remains synchronous and initiates cleanup; restoration follows active-work unwinding.
Testing
Reviewed AGENTS.md and CONTRIBUTING.md; followed scoped follow-up validation.

Repair reference: ff3d5acee839d27ebcb1c18725f1bd7015895d81; original feature/fix coverage retained. Unchanged manifest/lock and the successfully frozen-installed dependency tree from that review were reused.
bun run check:static — passed (four existing ESLint warnings); includes lint, any budget, smoke/build and deadcode.

Direct same-process bun test ./src/entrypoints/sdk/v2.sessionEnvTurn.test.ts ./tests/sdk/query-concurrency.test.ts — 38 passed, 0 failed (26 turn cases overlap the SDK group).
node bin/openclaude --version and NODE_DISABLE_COMPILE_CACHE=1 node bin/openclaude --version — passed.
Fresh upstream fetch and post-commit bun run security:pr-scan -- --base 072a921dba12fa3ac0cea07376c234a6970bb61f --head 19cb4b83a91edc6ba033fd975118cbc0ff359ca3 — passed.
git diff --check — passed. A merge-tree check against fetched current main completed without conflicts.
Six new parameterized cases fail at the expected credential-identity assertions on the starting production code and pass with the repair. They use real cross-platform helper subprocesses and prewarm ambient identity, then observe ambient → A → ambient → B → ambient through completion, consumer break and engine throw. No cache clearing occurs between the observed transitions.
A focused independent review of the frozen repair traced entry/exit, late-cache-write guards, provider consumption, close/error behavior and test isolation; it found no repair-owned defect.
Validation boundaries: initialization/engine scheduling are doubles; native/shim/OAuth/API-helper request construction is real with intercepted fetch and synthetic credentials. The AWS helper really executes and parses credentials; STS/INI operations are substituted, and the returned object is source-traced into Bedrock's constructor. No live-provider/AWS calls or production credential-store writes.
Real-helper/package tests ran outside the restricted process sandbox because it discards captured child stdout. Workloads used exclusive supervised process groups; config, fixtures and caches remained in the task-owned run, with no surviving workload.
Local toolchain: Bun 1.4.4; Node 22.23.1 is below the supported >=24.22.1 floor. Current-revision CI supplies supported-Node/clean-runner proof. The full repository suite and website checks were not rerun locally for this two-file v2 repair.
Screenshots: not applicable; no UI change.
Unchanged limitations: queued environment-mutex acquisition is not cancellable; persistent MCP connection/tool caches do not provide session-environment credential isolation; clients finishing MCP setup after close retain the existing ownership limitation. Older query(), startup-injected file descriptors, detached-agent lifetimes and separate transcript isolation remain outside this repair.

Walkthrough
SDK sessions now accept per-turn environment overrides. Turns apply overrides under a shared environment mutex and restore prior values after iteration, including early exits. Closing a session requests cleanup of active environment-bearing generators but does not wait for that cleanup to finish.
Changes: Session environment overrides
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Environment contract and snapshot handling src/entrypoints/sdk.d.ts, src/entrypoints/sdk/v2.ts, src/entrypoints/sdk/v2.sessionEnv.test.ts, tests/sdk/package-consumer-types.test.ts
SDKSessionOptions adds an optional env map. The implementation snapshots and applies overrides under the shared mutex, then restores prior values. Tests cover undefined removals, absent variables, sessions without overrides, mutex serialization, and environment property names such as __proto__.
Turns apply overrides after initialization and keep them active through agent loading, MCP setup, and message submission. Tests cover completed turns, early iteration exit, provider credentials, credential hydration, and concurrent turns.
Session close and turn cleanup src/entrypoints/sdk/v2.ts, src/entrypoints/sdk/v2.sessionEnvTurn.test.ts
close() marks the session closed and requests return on active environment-bearing generators. It clears engine and store references without waiting for generator cleanup. Tests cover paused turns, pending work, and turns queued for the environment mutex.
Sessions sharing an MCP server can run tools using another session’s credentials. A closed turn can also remain blocked behind a paused turn. These risks should be addressed or explicitly accepted before merge.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to cb6e3
Environment overrides are isolated between participating turns, but concurrent sessions without overrides can still use another session's provider configuration. Closing a paused turn also does not guarantee restoration or release of the shared lock. These risks are limited to hosts using overrides in a shared process; ordinary completion and explicit iterator cleanup restore the previous values.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · inferred: New session overrides mutate process.env while sessions without nonempty overrides bypass the mutex. A concurrent env-less session can therefore construct requests using another session's endpoint and credential configuration, potentially sending its conversation to the wrong provider or billing identity. This writer-only isolation pattern already existed in query(); the PR extends it to persistent v2 session turns. The public warning and serialization of participating turns constrain, but do not eliminate, this exposure.
Medium · security · inferred: After sendMessage yields, calling session.close() without returning or draining that iterator does not execute its environment-restoration finally. close() aborts the engine and clears references, while the context wrapper only advances or returns the generator when explicitly invoked. The suspended turn can consequently retain temporary provider configuration and the process-wide mutex indefinitely: env-less work can continue using those values, while subsequent env-carrying sessions and queries wait. Before this PR, a suspended v2 turn held neither this environment snapshot nor this lock. Explicit for-await break correctly restores both, but is not equivalent to close-only cleanup.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated blast radius is cohosted sessions and SDK queries sharing process.env and the mutex. Exposure depends on enabling nonempty overrides and overlapping work or leaving an iterator suspended. Whether an untrusted tenant can supply these options is not established; cross-process or deployment-wide exposure is not demonstrated.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — If one session installs a provider endpoint and another env-less session constructs its client concurrently, the second session can select that endpoint and ambient credential configuration. If the first iterator remains suspended after close(), the same configuration can remain visible beyond the intended active turn. These are source-supported paths, not demonstrated live-provider exploits.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The mutex protects participating override scopes, not all environment readers. Existing provider controls distinguish first-party authentication and strip authentication headers for explicit per-agent provider overrides; those controls do not provide session-local storage for environment-selected endpoints and credentials.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Explicit iterator return propagates through the SDK context wrapper, and the break test verifies restoration and lock reuse. Session close instead requests interruption without returning that iterator, leaving cleanup ownership split between session lifecycle and consumer iteration.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Prefer request-local provider configuration over temporary process-global mutation. If the global mechanism remains, coordinate environment readers as well as writers so a default session cannot inherit another session's temporary provider identity.
proposed — Give shutdown explicit ownership of active iterators and an awaitable completion boundary that terminates suspended iteration and waits for restoration and lock release. Avoid restoring independently while turn work could still consume the temporary environment.

Explanation
The title "feat(sdk): let a v2 session carry its own environment" matches the main change: adding SDKSessionOptions.env to persistent v2 sessions, with scoped environment application and restoration. It follows a conventional-commit style with a scope that matches the changed SDK surface. The title does not mention the credential-cache invalidation or close() behavior changes, but those are secondary aspects of the main feature.

Full details: Risk Surface Disclosed
Explanation
The PR touches provider routing, authentication caches and hydration, initialization, network request tests, and MCP/session cleanup. The description explicitly identifies these risk surfaces, documents concurrency and cleanup limits, lists provider and credential validation, and marks shared MCP credential isolation as out of scope. It also reports no repair-owned defect. The current review reports zero actionable findings, so no blocker is identified.
Full details: No Hidden Policy Change
Explanation
No hidden policy change found. The PR makes the environment behavior an explicit public SDKSessionOptions.env feature in src/entrypoints/sdk.d.ts and src/entrypoints/sdk/v2.ts. Its documentation states the routing, authentication, serialization, env-less concurrency, and deadlock behavior. The implementation opts in only when a caller supplies a nonempty environment and otherwise preserves existing session behavior. Existing permission wiring remains unchanged, including permissionMode, allowDangerouslySkipPermissions, disallowedTools, canUseTool, and onPermissionRequest. The diff adds no telemetry or analytics behavior. Provider endpoint and credential handling are intentional parts of the stated feature and are covered by explicit tests for routing and authentication restoration.

[error] 298-300: Recursive/iterative merge copies attacker-controllable keys from a source object into a target via a computed property assignment without rejecting dangerous keys, allowing prototype pollution. Skip or block "proto", "constructor", and "prototype" keys (e.g. if (key === "__proto__" || key === "constructor" || key === "prototype") continue;), use a null-prototype object (Object.create(null)), or use a safe merge utility instead.
Context: for (const key of Object.keys(overrides)) {

Note: [CWE-1321] Improperly Controlled Modification of Object Prototype Attributes ('Prototype Pollution').
When one configured turn holds the environment mutex, an env-less turn skips the mutex and can execute while the other turn’s variables remain in process.env. Ensure the env-less provider request uses the same isolation scheme before it reads provider endpoints or credentials.
Review follow-up: three findings fixed in bddb9b5, one declined with a reason. Full local preflight re-run, all green except the documented check stall.
Fixed — the mutex could be held by a turn that never started.Object.entries(overrides) invokes getters, so an env built out of accessors could throw after acquireEnvMutex() and before sendMessage entered its try. Application is wrapped now: what was already applied goes back and the lock is released before the error leaves.
Fixed — the snapshot has a null prototype.__proto__ is a variable name like any other, and on a plain object snapshot['__proto__'] = value is swallowed by the prototype setter instead of being stored, so the one key that must be restored would be the one key missing from Object.keys(snapshot). Object.create(null) is both the safe and the correct answer. (The ast-grep hit was about pollution; the real defect was a lost variable.)
Fixed, and not what was reported — the apply was on the wrong side of init(). Writing the turn-level test made it visible. query() applies its overrides afterinit() deliberately (SEC-1): init is memoized and configures the global agents, the proxies and mTLS once for the process, so applying before it meant whichever session ran first set all of that up out of its own variables. The apply moved inside the generator, right after init, with the restore in a finally around the rest of the turn — the shape query() already has. The earlier justification for wrapping yield* inner instead ("so an abandoned iterator restores") was simply wrong: breaking out of the loop calls the generator's return, which runs the generator's own finally, and there is now a test that breaks on the first message and checks both the variable and the lock.
Declined — isolating env-less turns. The finding is accurate: a turn belonging to a session with no env takes no mutex, so it can run while another session's variables are in place. It is also exactly how query() has always behaved — if (hasEnvOverrides) guards the same lock there — so this is a property of SEC-1's design, not something this PR introduces for v2 alone. Closing it means every turn in the process takes the environment lock whether or not it cares, i.e. all SDK turns serialise, for both query() and v2. That is a behaviour change across the whole SDK and a maintainer's call, not a detail of adding env to a type.
What this PR does instead is say so in the type rather than leave it to be discovered:
*WhatitdoesNOTdo,exactlyasin `query()`: a turn belonging to a * session without `env` takes no mutex, so it can run while another * session's variables are in place. In one process there is one * environment; isolating readers as well as writers would mean serialising * every turn in the process. So set `env` oneverysessionthatcareswhich*provideritreaches, notonlyontheoddoneout.
Happy to open a separate issue for the reader-side gap if you want it tracked — it belongs to query() as much as to v2, which is why it is not being fixed here.
Tests.v2.sessionEnvTurn.test.ts iterates sendMessage() with a stand-in engine that reports what it sees in process.env, so the assertions are on the turn rather than on the private hooks. With v2.ts reverted to main and both test files kept: 0 pass / 8 fail. With the change: 8 pass. bun run build, smoke, lint:any-budget, deadcode, typecheck, typecheck:type-tests all pass; bun run check still stalls in test:full as documented on #2253 and in the PR body.
git diff -w is the readable form of the v2.ts diff — most of it is the re-indent of the turn body under the new try.

Thanks @kevincodex1 — all three of CodeRabbit's findings are addressed, and the last one is in since its comment:
Mutex held by a turn that never started (Object.entries on a throwing getter) — fixed in bddb9b5: application is wrapped, what was applied goes back and the lock is released before the error leaves.
Turn-level coverage — bddb9b5 adds v2.sessionEnvTurn.test.ts, which iterates sendMessage() with a stand-in engine reporting what it sees in process.env: variables in place when the engine asks, an abandoned iterator restoring and freeing the lock, two different environments never interleaving. Red-first against main: 0 pass / 8 fail across both files.
Document the lock constraint — 55c53cb, on the option itself: a paused iterator holds the mutex, and a canUseTool callback must not await another env-carrying turn.
One finding I declined with a reason, in the thread and in the type: isolating turns of sessions that set noenv. That is how query() has always behaved (if (hasEnvOverrides) guards the same lock), so it is a property of SEC-1 rather than something this PR introduces; closing it would mean every turn in the process taking the environment lock — all SDK turns serialising, for query() too. Happy to open a separate issue if you want it tracked.
Local preflight is green except bun run check, whose test:full step stops making progress and spins one core with no output — documented on #2253 and reproduced here (2057s CPU, 35 min silent, clean tree). Every other step was run individually and passes.

[error] 330-332: Recursive/iterative merge copies attacker-controllable keys from a source object into a target via a computed property assignment without rejecting dangerous keys, allowing prototype pollution. Skip or block "proto", "constructor", and "prototype" keys (e.g. if (key === "__proto__" || key === "constructor" || key === "prototype") continue;), use a null-prototype object (Object.create(null)), or use a safe merge utility instead.

Note: [CWE-1321] Improperly Controlled Modification of Object Prototype Attributes ('Prototype Pollution').
Rebased on main (8c46032) and addressed the three open review findings in cb6e3089.
1. Object.keys vs Object.entries (v2.ts:345). Taken. Both loops now read one Object.entries(overrides), and it is read beforeacquireEnvMutex() — a throwing getter on a host's env can no longer leave the mutex held either, which strengthens the earlier fix in 06e3b4a8 rather than overlapping it.
2. mock.module('../init.js') not restored (sessionEnvTurn.test.ts:51). Taken. The real module is imported and held in beforeAll before the stub is registered, and re-registered in afterAll.
3. Concurrent env-less turn (sessionEnv.test.ts:40). Written, and it found the opposite of what the suggestion expected — so the test now asserts the real behaviour instead:
A turn that sets no environment takes no mutex (nothing to take, nothing to put back), so it runs alongside an env-scoped turn; process.env is one object per process, so it reads that turn's variables while they are in place. The suggested assertion (seen split between the two sessions) fails for that reason.
The alternative — making every turn take the mutex — would serialise an embedder's entire process the moment one session used env, which is a worse trade for the host this feature exists for. So the limitation is now stated in three places: the test name (AN ENV-LESS TURN RUNNING ALONGSIDE ONE CAN SEE ITS VARIABLES, BUT NOT OUTLIVE THEM), its docblock, and the SDKSessionOptions.env doc comment. What is guaranteed — that nothing survives the turn — is asserted.
The rest of that finding (apply/restore across a real sendMessage, including an abandoned iterator) was already covered by v2.sessionEnvTurn.test.ts, added in bddb9b53.
Local validation (CONTRIBUTING § Validation, run on this head): bun install --frozen-lockfile, bun run check, bun run typecheck, bun run typecheck:type-tests, node bin/openclaude --version, the same with NODE_DISABLE_COMPILE_CACHE=1, bun run test:provider-recommendation (167 pass), and bun run security:pr-scan -- --base FETCH_HEAD --head HEAD ("no suspicious additions found") — all clean.
One pre-existing failure in bun run test:provider, not from this PR: src/services/api/claude.streamWatchdog.test.ts › "falls back when the top-level stream iterator never settles" fails with ENOENT … interruption-trace.jsonl. Verified against the PR base: the same test fails on a clean origin/main (8c46032) worktree with the same error, and CI is green on both, so it looks Windows-local.
Correction to my previous comment: I misread the exit status of the backgrounded bun run check and reported it as clean. It was not. The accurate picture:
lint:any-budget, smoke and deadcode passed — they precede test:full in the && chain, so reaching test:full means they were clean.
test:full did not complete. Shard 4/8 hit the 600 s timeout (exit 124) after one failing test, src/components/agents/AgentRouteSelector.test.tsx › "typing a custom model id persists the full id on submit". 3/8 shards finished clean; the rest did not run.
Not from this PR: running that file alone on a clean origin/main (8c46032) worktree reproduces the same failure (4 pass, 1 fail), and the shard timeout follows it. I saw the identical shard-4 timeout and identical single failure on the #2253 branch too, so it is independent of either change — it looks Windows-local, and CI here is green.
Everything else in that comment stands and was run on this head: typecheck, typecheck:type-tests, node bin/openclaude --version (also with NODE_DISABLE_COMPILE_CACHE=1), test:provider-recommendation (167 pass), security:pr-scan (no suspicious additions), and the two env test files (9 pass). test:provider has the one pre-existing claude.streamWatchdog failure described above, also reproduced on base.
Sorry for the noise — flagging it rather than leaving an inaccurate validation claim on the PR.

321-353: Non-blocking: the null-prototype snapshot and single enumeration address the earlier findings.
Object.entries(overrides) runs before acquireEnvMutex(), so a throwing getter cannot leave the mutex held. The null-prototype snapshot keeps __proto__ restorable. This matches the retrieved learning about Object.create(null).
If acquireEnvMutex() is the only await between the check and the apply, the ordering is correct. A cancelled turn cannot leak the lock, because restoreSessionEnv runs in the finally block.
One edge case remains. process.env[key] = value coerces non-string values to strings. This is acceptable because the type is string | undefined.
396-502: Verify the lock is released if the generator is closed before the first next() completes applySessionEnv.
applySessionEnv() is awaited at Line 396, before the try at Line 397. If it rejects, the error path already restores and releases inside applySessionEnv. If it resolves, the try/finally owns the restore. This is correct.
A generator that is never iterated never reaches this code, so it takes no lock. This is also correct.
No blocking issue. The documented deadlock constraints in sdk.d.ts and v2.ts match the behavior.

The concern is refuted. No other test mocks src/entrypoints/init.ts; the only other init-related mock targets src/commands/initMode.js. The import-before-mock ordering therefore captures the real module for the current test suite.
Rebased onto main5a1fbe03 and pushed as eb5daf41. Status of the open findings:
Enumerate the environment once (v2.ts). Done in cb6e3089 / now eb5daf41: Object.entries(overrides) is read once, before the mutex, and both the snapshot and the apply loop use those entries — a Proxy cannot hand the two loops different key sets. The snapshot is Object.create(null), so __proto__ is remembered as a key instead of being swallowed by the prototype setter. The ast-grep prototype-pollution flag is a heuristic on the previous Object.keys/Object.entries shape.
Turn-level lifecycle test (v2.sessionEnv.test.ts). Done: v2.sessionEnvTurn.test.ts iterates sendMessage() against a stand-in engine that records what the turn saw in process.env. It covers the abandoned iterator (break restores and frees the mutex, proven by a second turn getting straight in), two different environments not interleaving, and an env-less turn running alongside.
Provider-boundary assertion (v2.sessionEnvTurn.test.ts). Declined, with reason: this PR changes when the environment is applied around a session turn, not how a provider client reads it — that is existing behavior with its own tests. A test reaching the provider request would stub the provider client/network only to re-assert process.env; the turn-level test already asserts the environment the engine sees, which is the contract this PR adds.
Env-less turns are not isolated. Accepted and documented on the type, as raised: one process has one environment. Making env-less turns take the lock too would serialise every SDK turn, for query() as much as for v2 — a maintainer's call, not part of adding env.
The single red check on eb5daf41 is an unrelated flaky test, not this change.
smoke-and-tests (24.11.x) failed on:
(fail) BashTool error output (#1231) > user-cancel abort returns cancellation metadata without treating exit 1 as abort [5017.12ms]
^ this test timed out after 5000ms.
ShellError: Shell command failed
code: 144,
interrupted: false,
abortReason: "user-abort",
It is in BashTool, which this PR does not touch, and it passed:
in the same PR's smoke-and-tests (22) job, and
on the #2253 and #2295 runs on the same runner.
That reads as a timing flake in one BashTool test on the 24.11.x runner. A re-run should clear it; the src/entrypoints/sdk suite this PR does own is green (12 pass).
CI flake, not this PR — a re-run is needed, and only maintainers can start it.
smoke-and-tests (24.11.x) failed again on 4bd4817a, but on a different test than the run before:
run
failing test
eb5daf41
BashTool error output (#1231) > user-cancel abort returns cancellation metadata without treating exit 1 as abort — timed out after 5000ms
4bd4817a
settings change detector fanout batching > debounces accepted deletion fanout after the deletion grace period — 1 fail / 1140 pass
Neither file is touched by this PR, which changes only src/entrypoints/sdk/v2.ts and its tests. Both pass locally, under load and repeatedly:
bun test ./src/tools/BashTool — 252 pass / 0 fail
bun test ./src/utils/settings — 84 pass / 0 fail
the two files together, 2 runs — 30 pass / 0 fail
And main fails the same way, on different tests each run: (fail) .claude linked target edits refresh invoked content and obey source lifetime (2026-10-21) and (fail) plan mode mechanical read-only policy > denies mutating PowerShell (2026-10-19). So test:full on the runners is timing-flaky; this PR is not the cause.
Could someone with admin re-run the failed smoke-and-tests (24.11.x) job for 4bd4817a? We cannot — gh run rerun returns "Must have admin rights to Repository."
@jatmn — since you have been stabilizing these suites recently (settings, skills), this may be a known one. Also, for context: #2253 and #2295 are the same author's sibling PRs, both green and blocked only on review.
Rebased onto mainae9b3192 and pushed as fd9fc0f2 (the empty ci: re-run commit is dropped). CI is running again — thanks, and understood on the in-progress CI rebuild; I'll treat failures in the suite's known-flaky files as noise for the next day or so.

GitHub reports MERGEABLE, with no conflicts, but BLOCKED / CHANGES_REQUESTED. Both required checks, CodeQL (javascript-typescript) and CodeQL (actions), pass, as do all other captured checks. Branch rules require one approving review covering the latest push; no human approval is recorded.
Rebase onto current main and validate the resulting branch before merge. The target is 147 commits beyond the merge-base and has newer toolchains, dependencies, CI, and SDK hooks. Both branches report version 0.33.0; there is no demonstrated release-version rollback.
CodeRabbit's request for turn-level tests is addressed, and the getter/enumeration fixes are present. Its module-restoration request is not fulfilled by the current teardown (finding 3). Its provider-request test request is relevant to the demonstrated production failure in finding 1; the added engine-only tests do not exercise that boundary.
Scope and validation
This adds useful v2 parity with query({ options: { env } }). Related #2253 / #2267 address transcript routing/isolation, #2244 addresses SDK hooks, and #2295 addresses MCP authentication; none duplicates this environment option. This review does not make those separate changes prerequisites.
All four changed files/hunks and affected references were reviewed. The primary review, two waves of two blind full-diff searches, and a separate missing-contract search were completed.

Findings
🟠 P1 — Restore the complete environment state touched by a scoped provider turn
📍 Where:v2.ts:338–339, with restoration at lines 358–366; the source and published SDKSessionOptions.env contract.
💥 What fails: On the env-only xAI route, a session with env: { XAI_API_KEY: secret } and model: 'grok-4' reaches real getAnthropicClient(), which copies that credential into OPENAI_API_KEY and writes OPENAI_BASE_URL, OPENAI_MODEL, and CLAUDE_CODE_USE_OPENAI. After the turn is completely drained and closed, only XAI_API_KEY is removed. A subsequent session with its own unrelated nonempty env sends to https://api.x.ai/v1/chat/completions using the first session's Bearer credential.
The native MiniMax route also leaves its derived ANTHROPIC_API_KEY, endpoint, and model behind, overwriting ambient values. This happens after ordinary completion and does not depend on concurrent env-less readers.
The same snapshot has an original-presence error: in the built Node SDK, originally absent keys named __proto__, constructor, or toString are restored as new environment entries containing inherited object/function strings.
🔎 Root cause: The new snapshot is incomplete in both field coverage and original presence:
It records only the input keys, although provider construction legitimately writes/deletes additional keys. It also treats an inherited process.env[key] value as an original environment entry. A null-prototype destination does not fix that source lookup.
📜 Stated contract:
“Applied around each turn and restored afterwards, under the same process-wide env mutex query() uses.” — sdk.d.ts:413–414
“Nothing survives the turn either way.” — sdk.d.ts:419–421
The added absence test also requires that a variable the environment did not have is removed again; the source explicitly identifies __proto__ as a supported variable name to restore.
🏷️ Attribution:PR-activated for provider-derived state: the new v2 application feeds a temporary dedicated key into existing provider normalizers without restoring their outputs. PR-introduced for the new explicit-key presence snapshot. Identical v2 inputs at both the captured merge-base and live target leave ambient credentials/route unchanged because those implementations do not apply SDKSessionOptions.env. The quoted contract binds this new v2 scope.
📌 In this PR:
v2.ts apply/restore helpers — omit derived fields and original own-key presence.
sendMessage — uses that snapshot for all create/resume/prompt turns; normal completion does not prevent the leak.
v2.sessionEnv.test.ts — proves ordinary explicit-key restoration, but misses inherited-name absence.
v2.sessionEnvTurn.test.ts — substitutes the engine and misses real request-client normalization.
v2.ts option documentation and published sdk.d.ts — describe restoration; their promises need to hold across the implemented scope.
All ten relevant native/shim normalizers were inspected. Their affected fields include ANTHROPIC_API_KEY/BASE_URL/MODEL, CLAUDE_CODE_USE_OPENAI, OPENAI_BASE_URL/MODEL/API_KEY/API_KEYS, format/Azure/auth-header fields, and ANTHROPIC_CUSTOM_HEADERS, including fields they delete.
🔒 Unchanged on main: Provider normalization is established behavior; existing xAI tests explicitly require it. The older query() snapshot has analogous limitations, but its unchanged behavior is not a repair task for this PR.
🔧 Required correction: Make this PR's new scope restore original values and own-entry absence for its explicit overrides and the finite provider-normalization fields it activates, including deleted settings. Keep the mechanism local to the new scope. Add regression evidence through real native/shim client construction or intercepted requests, plus originally absent inherited-name keys in Node; shared cases can cover equivalent routes.
For every captured key, absence must be based on an own environment entry, for example:
That presence check also needs the complete relevant key set; changing only this lookup does not close the provider leak.
🛠️ Author fix: Close the snapshot contract across every listed in-diff row in one pass. Cover both native and shim effects, overwritten/deleted fields, and original absence; retain the useful existing tests. Keep the source/public wording consistent with the resulting behavior.
🚫 Out of scope: Rewriting provider normalizers, fixing the unchanged query() implementation, serializing env-less readers, redesigning transcript storage, or introducing a new environment framework.
🟠 P1 — Release a paused turn's environment when its session closes
📍 Where:v2.ts:500–501, with acquisition at line 396 and the existing session-close lifecycle.
💥 What fails: A supported manual-iteration cleanup sequence leaves the closed session's environment and process-wide mutex installed:
After this sequence, a timed acquireEnvMutex() cannot acquire the lock. Subsequent env-carrying sessions and queries wait indefinitely, while env-less work can read the closed session's temporary values. Explicitly returning the discarded iterator releases them, but close() does not.
🔎 Root cause: The new resource is owned only by the generator's finally. Closing a session aborts/clears its engine and store without terminating a generator suspended at yield, so that cleanup never runs unless the consumer resumes or returns it. The passing for await … break test exercises iterator return, which is a different shutdown path.
📜 Stated contract:
“Close the session and release resources.” — existing SDKSession.close() documentation in v2.ts
“You MUST call close() when finished with a session to prevent memory leaks.” — existing session lifecycle documentation
🏷️ Attribution:PR-introduced. The new full-turn snapshot/mutex adds a resource that survives the existing close path. The same iterator/close sequence at both merge-base and live target leaves no temporary environment and no held env mutex. This is separate from the documented deadlock caused by awaiting a nested env-carrying turn.
📌 In this PR:
applySessionEnv and sendMessage — acquire the new resource and attach cleanup solely to iteration.
Normal completion, exception and explicit break/return — cleanup paths inspected.
Create/resume/prompt — share this scope; the drained prompt path cleans up, while a paused persistent-session turn exposes the hole.
v2.sessionEnvTurn.test.ts — covers break, but calls close() only after iteration has already ended.
Source/public per-turn restoration copy — must remain true when the session is closed.
🔒 Unchanged on main: The shared mutex and older query() lifecycle are outside this correction. The existing session-close API establishes the contract; this PR must integrate its new resource with it.
🔧 Required correction: Give session termination ownership of its new active environment scope so closing a paused session initiates safe iterator completion/restoration and releases the mutex without another consumer call. Coordinate with active work before restoring its environment; retain the existing normal/throw/break cleanup paths. Add a close-only regression that verifies restoration and admission of a subsequent scoped turn.
🛠️ Author fix: Close the new resource-lifecycle gap across the listed v2 scope and tests in one pass. Integrate the scope with session termination instead of adding another consumer instruction or fixing only the break test.
🚫 Out of scope: A new public async-close API, a reentrant/shared-mutex redesign, instantaneous cancellation of every queued acquisition, global serialization, or unrelated baseline lifecycle cleanup.
🟡 P2 — Restore the original init export after the turn tests
💥 What fails: On pinned Bun 1.3.13, the existing tests/sdk/query-concurrency.test.ts passes all 12 tests alone. Run it after the new turn suite:
bun test ./src/entrypoints/sdk/v2.sessionEnvTurn.test.ts \
./tests/sdk/query-concurrency.test.ts
The grouping produces 15 pass / 1 fail: queryAsync keeps eager process-global initialization detached observes undefined instead of the global session ID at its existing line-157 assertion. The real memoized init has been replaced by the test's no-op. Other same-process SDK tests can consequently skip real initialization.
🔎 Root cause:realInit retains a live imported module namespace. Bun's mock.module() replaces that namespace's init binding, so the teardown returns the already-mocked value:
🏷️ Attribution:PR-introduced. This test file and its module registration are absent at both merge-base and live target. The existing concurrency test passes without this suite and fails after it; an independent original-function witness confirms the replacement on both Bun 1.3.13 and 1.4.4.
📌 In this PR:
beforeAll — stores a live namespace rather than original export values.
afterAll — re-registers that mutated namespace.
The new turn tests pass in isolation; their teardown must also preserve later tests.
The other new env test has no module registration; its env/mutex cleanup was checked.
🔒 Unchanged on main:scripts/run-tests.ts uses --isolate; the canonical SDK/concurrency grouping passes 24 tests and contains cross-file propagation. This finding concerns the documented ordinary bun test workflow, not a claim that canonical CI fails.
🔧 Required correction: Capture the original export values before mocking and re-register those values afterward. A plain copy retains the original function:
realInit={ ...(awaitimport('../init.js'))}
Verify the exact same-process grouping above and original init identity after teardown.
🛠️ Author fix: Correct both capture and teardown ownership in this changed test file, preserving the useful turn assertions and the existing concurrency contract. Resolve CodeRabbit's module-restoration request against the real exported function.
🚫 Out of scope: Rewriting init, changing the existing concurrency test's expectation, removing isolation from CI, or redesigning the test framework.
`QueryOptions` accepts `env`; `SDKSessionOptions` did not, so a host that
keeps several sessions alive in one process had to share one environment
between them.
That matters when the variable selects the provider. `ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL`,
`OPENAI_BASE_URL` and the matching keys are read per request, so two sessions
aimed at different endpoints silently used whichever had been set last — and
the symptom is not an error but an answer from the wrong place, or billing
against the wrong account.
Applied around each turn and restored afterwards, reusing the process-wide env
mutex `query()` already takes (SEC-1), so one session's variables cannot leak
into another session's turn. The wrapping sits around the whole iteration
rather than inside the generator, so a consumer that breaks out of the loop
still restores: the generator's return runs the finally with it. A session
that sets no `env` takes no mutex and costs nothing.
The mutex means turns belonging to sessions with different environments
serialise rather than overlap. With one process environment there is no honest
alternative, and serialising is the behaviour that is correct rather than
merely concurrent; the type documents it.

…on failure
Review follow-up on the placement and on two ways the lock could be kept.
APPLIED AFTER init(), INSIDE THE GENERATOR. `query()` takes the mutex and
applies its overrides after `init()` for a reason: `init` is memoized, and it
configures the global agents, the proxies and mTLS once for the process. Doing
it before meant whichever session happened to run first configured all of that
out of its own variables. The apply now sits where query's does — right after
init, with the restore in a `finally` around the rest of the turn.
An early exit still restores. That was the stated reason for wrapping `yield*
inner` instead, and it was not a reason: a consumer that breaks out of the loop
calls the generator's `return`, which runs the generator's own `finally` — the
way the same pattern already works in `query()`.
THE MUTEX IS RELEASED IF APPLYING THROWS. `Object.entries(overrides)` invokes
getters, so an `env` whose properties are accessors could throw after the lock
was taken and before `sendMessage` entered its `try`. The lock stayed held and
every later env-setting turn in the process waited on it forever. Application
is now wrapped: what was already applied goes back and the lock is released
before the error leaves.
THE SNAPSHOT HAS A NULL PROTOTYPE. `__proto__` is a variable name like any
other, and on a plain object `snapshot['__proto__'] = value` is swallowed by
the prototype setter instead of being remembered — so the one key that must be
restored would be the one key missing from `Object.keys(snapshot)`.
The tests now drive `sendMessage()` itself, not only the private apply and
restore: the engine is a stand-in that reports what it sees in `process.env`,
and `init` is stubbed because the real one reaches the network. They prove the
variables are in place when the engine asks, that an abandoned iterator puts
them back and frees the lock, and that two turns with different environments
never interleave — three tests, all five of the earlier ones kept, red against
main (0 of 8).
Documented in the type what this does NOT do, since it would otherwise be
found out instead: a turn of a session without `env` takes no mutex, exactly as
in `query()`, so it can run while another session's variables are in place.
Isolating readers too would mean serialising every turn in the process.

…ld all turn
Review follow-up. Holding the environment mutex for the whole turn is what
makes the isolation real, and it has two consequences a host author would
otherwise meet as a hang:
A PAUSED ITERATOR STILL HOLDS IT. Stopping half way through `for await (… of
session.sendMessage(…))` to await another env-carrying turn waits forever: the
first turn cannot finish while the second waits for the lock it holds.
Finishing the turn, or leaving the loop with `break`/`return` — which calls the
generator's `return` and frees the lock — is the way out.
A `canUseTool` CALLBACK IS INSIDE THE TURN. Awaiting an env-carrying `query()`
from it is the same deadlock one level down.
Both are documented on the option rather than discovered. Neither applies to a
session without `env`, which takes no lock at all.

…rn sees
Three findings from review.
Object.keys fed the snapshot loop and Object.entries the apply loop. A plain
host object gives both the same keys; a Proxy need not. A key seen only by the
apply loop would be set and never restored. Enumerated once now, and before
the mutex is taken, so a throwing getter cannot leave it held either.
mock.module registrations are process-global and mock.restore does not remove
them, so the stubbed init() went on standing in for the real one in every test
file that ran afterwards in the same bun process. The real module is captured
first and re-registered in afterAll.
The review also asked for a concurrent env-less turn, expecting isolation.
There is none, and the test now says so: a turn that sets no environment takes
no mutex, so it runs alongside one that does and reads the same process.env
while the variables are in place. Serialising every turn instead would stall
an embedder's whole process the moment one session used env. What does hold —
that nothing survives the turn — is asserted, and the limit is documented on
SDKSessionOptions.env.

Cancel queued environment-mutex waiters during close().
close() aborts the session and calls return() on tracked turns, but applySessionEnv() awaits acquireEnvMutex() without a cancellation input. The no-timeout mutex path keeps that waiter in its queue. If another session holds the mutex in a paused turn, the closed session can remain pending indefinitely. Promise.allSettled() then cannot clear its engine and application-store references.
Add cancellation or queue removal for the mutex waiter, and invoke it from close().

@coderabbitai The follow-ups are addressed in the current revision, b31dfcb944920b4f0a206b928868c3416eb5c76a:
Published SDK types now include the paused-iterator and permission-callback deadlock warnings.
The built Node regression uses the existing package-consumer harness, which builds current source once per test process. It passes both missing-artifact and intentionally stale-artifact checks.
For review 5691608188, removed the newly introduced Promise.allSettled reference-disposal deferral. close() now clears the session engine/store immediately while returning the captured iterators independently; their environment restoration still occurs after engine work unwinds. The queued-close test now proves the disposed engine is inaccessible before the other holder releases its lock. This assertion fails before the correction and passes afterward.
The broader suggestion to cancel/remove waiters in the shared environment mutex is outside this repair's scope. The starting PR already had noncancellable acquisition; the newly introduced engine/store retention has been removed without changing that shared contract. Queued iteration can remain pending until the current holder releases the mutex, and the PR description explicitly records that limitation.
Final-tree validation: static checks, both type gates, 326 SDK tests, 134 provider-focused tests (11 overlap), both Node launcher modes, and the intent scan pass. A focused independent lifecycle review approved the narrowed close correction. Current-revision CI and automated review are running.

Before this approval, GitHub reported MERGEABLE / BLOCKED / CHANGES_REQUESTED. All 28 checks have completed: 25 succeeded and three were expected path-based skips. Both enforced CodeQL checks and all three documented aggregate checks pass. CodeRabbit approved this head.
This approval covers the reviewed latest push. No merge is performed.
The target is two commits beyond the merge-base. Its changes concern VS Code chat/resume, session-storage comments and an AI/ML API web-search provider. A merge-tree check succeeds without conflicts. Candidate-specific SDK/authentication/configuration code, package/lock/toolchain inputs and version 0.33.0 have no target delta. There is no demonstrated rebase or release-metadata blocker.
Scope and review evidence
The change provides useful per-turn environment overrides for persistent v2 sessions. Create, resume and one-shot prompt share the implementation. Maintenance is concentrated in a finite provider-output snapshot and the existing authentication-cache invalidators; no dependency or shared-mutex policy change is introduced.
All five changed files and every hunk were inspected with affected references. The primary review, two waves of two blind full-diff searches in fresh contexts, and the separate missing-contract search completed. The four full-diff searchers received raw evidence without the controller's or other searchers' candidates. Candidate reconciliation and the intent/base/head/target audit found no actionable PR-owned defect.

Original init exports, spies, fetch, environment, globals and temporary fixtures restored; neighboring concurrency oracle passes
sdk.d.ts / package consumer
Published type parity; build current sources once per test process; built Node own-entry absence
Both declarations document restoration, env-less readers and paused-iterator/permission-callback deadlocks
The environment record was checked across its actual boundaries:
Field/rule
Producer/loader

Persistence/renderer
Optional/empty map
Host options; absent/empty skips lock
Ambient environment
No-env concurrency test; API caveat
Not serialized; no renderer
Own key identity/absence
One enumerable-key read; null-prototype snapshot and own-entry check
Assign/delete/restore
Direct scope tests and built Node inherited-name regression
Per-turn snapshot only

Typed host record; native environment assignment
Undefined deletes for turn
Direct/turn tests; both declarations
Original value restored
Derived route/auth fields
Existing provider normalizers/hydrators within scope
Native/shim client requests and auth readers
Endpoint/header/identity assertions; both declarations promise restoration
Snapshot restored; auth caches invalidated
No HTTP/CLI admission parser is added. No additional trim, uniqueness or length contract is inferred for this JavaScript environment map.
Earlier review requests were verified from current code and runtime evidence: derived-output/own-absence restoration, paused-close cleanup, original init export restoration, single enumeration, public deadlock warnings, real provider-request assertions and fresh package artifacts.
Related work was compared by scope, implementation, checks and review state. #2253 is closed without merge and concerns transcript pointers; #2464 supplies the current session-metadata work. #2244 is merged and concerns query hooks. #2295 is open with changes requested and concerns MCP authentication tooling. None duplicates this environment option or supplies a dependency required for this diff.
Validation
Frozen dependency install and bun run check:static passed, including lint, budget, build/smoke, SDK export checks and deadcode.
Direct same-process turn/concurrency grouping: 38 passed, including the existing real-init oracle.
Removing the three scope-boundary invalidators in a disposable copy made all nine credential-identity cases fail at their intended assertions; the unmodified sources pass.
Normal and compile-cache-disabled Node launcher checks, explicit-base security intent scan and git diff --check passed.
The restricted sandbox discarded helper subprocess output; the same unmodified tests passed with normal subprocess access. Local Bun is the pinned 1.4.4. Local Node 22.23.1 is below the supported floor; current-head CI supplies supported-Node evidence. The complete repository suite and website checks were not rerun locally. Provider fetches used synthetic responses; no live-provider behavior is claimed.

Summary
Add
SDKSessionOptions.envto persistent v2 sessions. Nonempty overrides apply after process initialization, serialize under the existing environment mutex for each turn, and restore when iteration completes, throws, returns, or unwinds after close. The helper-cache repair is local to the new v2 boundaries. It reuses the existing epoch/promise-identity-safe invalidation functions; it adds no credential subsystem or public API.
Impact
close()remains synchronous and initiates cleanup; restoration follows active-work unwinding.Testing

A merge-tree check against fetched current main completed without conflicts.Six new parameterized cases fail at the expected credential-identity assertions on the starting production code and pass with the repair.
Notes
grok-4, native MiniMaxMiniMax-M2.5, API Routeclaude-sonnet-4-6, first-party OAuth/API-key-helper request serialization, Gemini/GitHub hydration and AWS credential export.query(), startup-injected file descriptors, detached-agent lifetimes and separate transcript isolation remain outside this repair.Current review status
